The service here was terrible tonight. My husband had to wait for 25 minutes to get a bartenders assistance, only after saying "sorry I've been standing here for a second" to which the bartender said "don't act like a child". The bartender then made my husband's drinks and said "you can get your drinks if you apologize for them" and my husband did. He then proceeded to watch my husband throughout the night (a stretch of phrase, given we stayed no longer than an hour tops). When friends went to order he would say "absolutely but you cannot serve that man", referencing my husband. My husband never once after the first encounter approached the bar or made a stink, but the bartender went over and said my husband was being erratic and would be forcibly removed from the property if he did not choose to leave of his own volition. We left irritated and with a poor impression of Ego's. Your bartenders absolutely have the right to refuse service but the undue poor treatment of patrons was uncalled for. You can call it whatever you want - protecting of staff, policy, etc - but the reality is that we were otherwise harmless and unimposing and your staff was untoward. Hands down the best night of my birthday weekend. This is a true dive bar karaoke spot--in the best way. Fun, chaotic, high-energy, and absolutely packed with people ready to sing their hearts out. Pro tip: get on the list early. We arrived around 8:00 on a Thursday and didn't get called up until close to midnight. Also, heads up--people do tip the DJ to move up, which we didn't realize at first. If you really want to sing, tip accordingly! Drinks are very affordable (don't come expecting craft cocktails), but the ranch waters were hitting the spot and kept the night going. I got kicked out of egos last night because of a misogynistic bouncer. We get in line and a few minutes later this whole group cuts us in line, okay, whatever. An hour later, we are still in line, close to the front, and one of the dudes left the line to go pee and comes back. All his friends are inside and he's begging the girls at the front to let him cut. They looked really nervous and uncomfortable to tell the guy no, so I spoke up and said "no, you're not cutting. We saw you cut the line earlier, and you can't just cut again." He looks at me and goes "what's wrong with you?" I said "nothing is wrong with me. I get that you had to go pee, but no one wants to let you cut the line." So the bouncer lets him in the door and backed him up saying "I didn't see anything, you're good dude." I don't say anything else. Then at the front the bouncer looks at my ID, lets me in, I say thank you, and then as I'm walking in say under my breath "thanks for sticking up for women." He then proceeds to storm in behind me and kick me out saying "I'm not playing this game. You will not yell at me." I would like to clarify that I never yelled at the bouncer, but he proceeded to act as if I had committed a crime. The bouncer was extremely rude to me, and did not care for the women at the front who were extremely uncomfortable by the guy who was trying to cut. I have never been treated this way before at Egos, but the current staff member/bouncer was extremely condescending, rude, and quite frankly, a misogynist who would rather let a man in because he jumped out of line and begged a group of girls to cut, making them visibly uncomfortable. In the current state of the country, I challenge this bar to really think about if their staff is protecting patrons. This incident left an extremely sour taste in my mouth, and I will never step foot into a bar where the staff is so disgustingly awful for kicking out a woman who was sticking up for others. read more

Went here for the first time with a friend to celebrate the World Cup. We were there for about two hours, just hanging out. I went to the bathroom, and when I came back, they had already told someone we just met that they weren't serving us anymore. No warning. No reason. When I asked why, they couldn't give me an answer. They tried labeling us as too drunk -- but I wasn't, and no one even spoke to us about it first. Outside, someone I assume was the bouncer just said I looked "unwell." Pretty sure they wanted us out because we didn't tip. I guess we weren't "regulars." Just read other reviews -- apparently this happens a lot. Groups getting kicked out for no reason, rude staff, bartenders cutting people off without cause. It's not just me. Nothing like this has ever happened to me anywhere else in Austin. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. Plenty of better bars that don't treat customers like this. read more

Cheap cold beers, good vibes, and fun karaoke earns a 5 star rating from me. We came here on a Friday night around 7 so it wasn't busy at the time and were able to grab seating right by the stage. Yay! I made it to the legendary Ego's!! Most known for karaoke, this eclectic dive bar in Austin is what some might consider a hidden gem. I consider it a bar for locals (and tourists alike) where you can get an ice cold beer, yummy cocktail, or mocktail and just relax with friends and other patrons. The mocktail menu is really good! I was actually pretty surprised to see it. Not even sure why I was. Weird. But they are good!! The bartenders get insanely busy and are on it! We went as a group of 6 at 10. He let 4 people in and then as he is looking at the last 2 ids says your friends eyes are weird. He pulls out the first girl he let in and when we were like wait what. He starts getting an attitude and says she is too drunk and ran into the wall???? What wall? When? You saw her run into a wall as you're looking at ids and letting in 5 other people??? We were trying to ask questions very calmly and he was acting like we were being crazy. Very confusing and weird. Came back again recently and it's pretty much more of the same. It was a fun boozy Thursday night at Ego's. It's most definitely a hole in the wall and walking up to it felt like I was gonna get jumped and have my organs harvested. But it turned out to be a really fun night of karaoke. Service was pretty good despite it being packed. The bartenders actually served me rather than focusing on the women. The karaoke needs to be better organized. The line to sing was long. Picking a song either at the DJ booth or on the app was confusing. They do provide covers so you're not spitting all over it and germs aren't easily spread. read more

The guy in charge said 1 hour. I said well had a reservation and that I don't live here. I asked if there's anyway to get moved up as my song was short and he said no even though I was the bride. I also tipped him $10 and everyone I was with tipped him between $10-40 so he made $200 off of all of us and still nothing. Will not return. You only get married once. Me and my girlfriend love to do karaoke together as a hobby. We decided to check this place out while we were staying in Downtown Austin for vacation. And I must say, we made the right call going here. The environment was nice and staff was very friendly and professional. The drinks are also very reasonably priced. The DJ's they had were also very social and had good selections of songs. We loved it so much, we went back again before we returned home. If we make it back to Austin at a later date, we will definitely come back to Ego's. I highly recommend this bar for anyone else who visits Austin. read more

"Ego? More like No-go." This place is all flash and no substance. The bar seems more interested in its image than providing a good experience for its customers. The staff acted like they were too cool to be working there--ignoring us and rolling their eyes when we asked for help. The karaoke setup was a nightmare. The sound system had more feedback than a cheap mic at a middle school talent show, and the song selection was laughable--good luck finding anything newer than 2005. Plus, the vibe of the place was straight-up pretentious. Felt more like a popularity contest than a karaoke bar. To top it off, the drinks were overpriced, and the "signature cocktails" tasted like they came from a gas station slushie machine. I had come here and brought friends with me twice in the last week and spent a lot of money here and every thing was fine. Then tonight I came in and it was super slow so I went and checked to see if they were open and when I went in I said yellow to the manager the girl with the pink hair and tattoos and I said hey I was just checking if you all were open and am inviting some friends to play pool. She said okay and I said alright well I'm going to go smoke in my car until they get here thank you. Then when they arrived and we walked in she had a man block me physically from entering like I just had previously and tell me she didn't like our interaction so she was not allowing us to enter. My husband, mom, and I walked over to Egos on July 4th after we watched the fireworks on Congress bridge to have a couple beers and wait for the crowds/traffic to die down. Best decision ever! We walked into a karaoke party and while none of us got up on stage, we all 3 had a blast singing along. They have a large screen up on the wall for bar patrons to follow along with the lyrics. Three canned beers cost $14.50 including tip. Can't get much better price than that on a Friday night this close to downtown Austin. No draft options but full liquor options and lots of local beer options in cans/bottles. Ego's has that old Austin dive bar feeling. Walls and ceiling are covered with nostalgia posters and crappy art, the bathroom stalls are marked with graffiti and smells like stale piss. Ahhh, the good 'ole days!
