Had a fun Friday night at Ego's. Didn't know what to expect from a bar under a parking lot but it did the trick! We had a big group so they capitalized most of the mic/stage which makes me a bit biased when it comes to the entertainment of the evening. The randoms that did get their song requests in were a mix of wow and sit down, but that's a karaoke bar for you! Getting a seat may be tricky later in the evening as it does get crowded and there is a line with a one out, one policy, so your smooth entrance is just based on how many folks decide to make their way there that night. read more

Me and my girlfriend love to do karaoke together as a hobby. We decided to check this place out while we were staying in Downtown Austin for vacation. And I must say, we made the right call going here. The environment was nice and staff was very friendly and professional. The drinks are also very reasonably priced. The DJ's they had were also very social and had good selections of songs. We loved it so much, we went back again before we returned home. If we make it back to Austin at a later date, we will definitely come back to Ego's. I highly recommend this bar for anyone else who visits Austin. read more

I do not recommend this bar to anyone who is trying to have a good night. All staff is rude from the second we walked in. The bartender last night was a girl who looked slightly Gothic was rude to me and actually flirted with my boyfriend. When I informed the manager(a woman) she couldn't care less, she was mad I even brought it up to her. Basically, they kick people out for standing at your table (even if it's right near your chair). It can get kind of crowded, causing you to have to wait outside. They might tell you that the wait is an hour to get in, don't believe them. The concept of this place is great. Potential is super fun, crowd has great energy. I came here on recs from people who used to live in Austin before recent passive aggressive bar manager took over. The bar staff...woof. Extremely condescending, and thats only if you can get their attention in the first place. Bartender was paying more attention to their boyfriend than their job. With 10 people in the establishment it took 10 minutes to order a drink because they couldnt be bothered. This is a karaoke bar and yet we were told be quiet when clapping/hyping up others during their performances? I thought the point of a karaoke bar was to have fun, let loose and support others. Only redeeming qualities are the guy who runs karaoke and the other patrons participating. Hopefully leadership here can course correct their vision in terms of management and resume the title of the most fun place in Austin for karaoke. Seems management doesnt understand the concept of the bar and treats patrons like they are in the high end place they wish they were managing rather than the divey karaoke bar they actually work at. read more

ZERO STARS. Asked for a phone charger was told I had to pay for one. PAID for the charger and was ASKED to leave for "being rude" to the bartenders. The karaoke was fun. My friends and I have a blast. But 90% of the staff is standoffish and rude for no apparent reason - to not just me but to everyone. Weird energy here. My friends left our table and started walking towards the door... As everyone has mention, it is located in a garage space under an apartment complex. On this particular night there was a line. I had to wait on a line. Oh boy. I am glad I did. As soon as you walk in. You can feel the energy of people having a good time. The place was packed on Halloween weekend, but there was plenty of room to make a move for drinks, for signing, for picking up your future ex significant other. Lots of talent across the board. While I did not participate in Karaoke. The signing was entertaining. Lots of songs that are fan favorites. Everyone seem to be enjoying themselves. I was. During this particular week Austin was under water alert with various restrictions. Ego's met the challenge and exceeded my expectations of HACCP. Good job guys. The staff had everything under control. ID's at the door. Number of guests inside the bar. Service for drinks. Flow of the crowd. Singers on queue for their moment on stage. What an awesome karaoke dive bar. Lots of locals, visitors and fun. Drinks are plentiful, reasonable and effective. Most people need them to be effective to get up and sing. The acoustics are tough for the singers as it can be hard to hear yourself. The song list is extensive and I swear I think the thing runs on a Windows 3.1 machine. But, it works. The right songs come up and sound good. The barback even gets in on the fun as does the karaoke DJ. Overall great place and must-visit for Austin going forward. read more

I tried to come here last night with a group of friends. The guy working the door said we could all come in apart from one of us who he refused to address directly, instead referring to 'her' and 'she' while he spoke to me. We were all polite and sober including the person he said couldn't come in. When asked why he was refusing her entry, he said he was using his 'better judgement' and that was the end of it. Overall a very unpleasant experience with an incredibly rude and disrespectful doorman and by extension, establishment. I think he should use his 'better judgement' and get a new job. read more

Pretty good 7-day-a-week karaoke bar in South Austin. Appears to be popular with the locals. Only stayed for one beer and one song because we had an early class the next morning. Al Ayala the karaoke host runs a tight ship. He explains the rules right off and keeps the rotation intact. Very fair. He is animated and a damn good singer. Great sound system. Not sure about drink prices. Ordered a beer and a Diet Coke, paid with a ten and got back about 4 dollars. Seems a little steep. The locals have a blast here. Dancing and whooping it up. Our whole experience was a dumpster fire, start to finish. We showed up with a group of six and had to wait in line for a bit. No big deal there - they were busy enough to need a line. When we did get in, it was pretty much standing room only. Again, busy is fine... We grabbed some cocktails and tried to put in a song. This is where it quickly fell apart. First of all, they use an app based system, so no cell signal, no karaoke. Second, the app sucks on multiple levels; first it is not very intuitive to get signed up, and second, it asks for access to other platforms in order to work (i.e. Facebook or Gmail), and asks for those specific passwords. Um... No. Not doing that. Last thing that pisses me off more than anything at a karaoke joint: If you are the dude or gal running the karaoke, and the wait time to sing is an hour or so, YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE A TURN TO SING! It's not about you! It's about the paying customers! Four songs in the queue? Knock yourself out. But 40, and you jump the line because you think you are some sort of great singer? I have only ever written 5 reviews on yelp&google etc on an establishment in my whole life. Also, I actually have NEVER, in my life, EVER, written a negative review about an establishment because I just never understood going out of your way to bash a place. That being said, do not waste your money here. Genuinely, austin has an assortment of amazing night life and you will definitely question why you decided to come here when you arrive. It may be because its located underneath a parking garage, or because as soon as you enter it will obvious that this is the epitome of the most divey-est, dirtiest bar to step foot in. AND I LOVE DIVE AND DIRTY BARS SO THAT AINT THE PROBLEM. The bar had a weird and confusing only buy two drinks policy. The karaoke had potential, but I told the uber driver on the way home never to come to this place, and I will ensure anyone I know who likes drinks and karaoke to never come to this place. ITS SO SAD! Because the drinks are cheaply priced but taste horrible tbh so i guess as long as you just don't try to have a good time lol, you may like this place. Last night when I went I asked the bartender for a double and she poured me a single (I counted her pour because i'm a bartender as well) and she still charged me for a double anyways. That's fine didn't say anything didn't want to be a karen. Then when I went to get another drink she said she was done serving anyone 20 minutes before the place even closed, so I closed my tab tipped and left. She wanted to leave I get it but the real reason i'm writing this review is because when I looked at my bank account today she definitely added waaaaaaay more to her tip than I gave her. Honestly this place isn't that bad. it reminds me of a grunge kids hangout in a 2016 movie. I did get ignored by the bartender a bit but i still got my drinks. THE PLACE SMELLS MUSTY THO. idk maybe the people in it were musty, but the night I went the place was kicking. they let anybody sing, not just regulars you just have to get in where you fit in type thing. Glad to have found this spot to do karaoke. It is a dive bar --which means if you like dive bars, you'll be in heaven. If you don't like dive bars, why did you go in? I adore dive bars and that made it all the better. I went in on a Sunday night and found it hoppin'. The singers were clearly having fun. It was apparent there were a number of regulars. One of the best parts was how encouraging it was and that they had a big screen that all could see. People sang along and it was great. Although the KJ was a bit gruff, he overall seemed to be enjoying himself. The atmosphere was nice and relaxing. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Long story short, the good part is this bar has beer (which tends to be pretty standard at any bar) and the guy manning the karaoke was helpful. The cons: the bartender was completely disrespectful, yelling at me because she didn't approve of the language I used when having a private conversation within earshot. I get that it's called Ego's so maybe it's a "Dick's Last Resort" type of place where its funny that the bartenders treat you like a flea-ridden dog, but the women was neither funny nor charming. She was just plain old mean, clearly pissed off about her life, and taking it out on the customers. It's too bad because I enjoy karaoke more than most but would certainly not go back here. This place seems to be going the way of many other bars in downtown Austin, catering to the masses and losing that hometown Austin feel. I wish I would have gotten her name. If the manager sees this, the woman working the bar on Friday, August 13th is alienating your customers and simply terrible at what she does. Update: Gave the bar a call and spoke with the manager, who ended up the bartender than served me that night. No hope for this place, clearly the manager's attitude, general demeaner, and animosity towards customers is passed down to the rest of the staff based on the other reviews I read. I am here out of town. Was looking for a place to do karaoke. When entered into the bar they were very unwelcoming. Went to order a drink and the bartender gave us a hard time. Then went to put her name in to sing karaoke and unfortunately because we weren't regulars they told us it would be an extremely long wait. I will not recommend this bar. read more
