Long story short, the good part is this bar has beer (which tends to be pretty standard at any bar) and the guy manning the karaoke was helpful. The cons: the bartender was completely disrespectful, yelling at me because she didn't approve of the language I used when having a private conversation within earshot. I get that it's called Ego's so maybe it's a "Dick's Last Resort" type of place where its funny that the bartenders treat you like a flea-ridden dog, but the women was neither funny nor charming. She was just plain old mean, clearly pissed off about her life, and taking it out on the customers. It's too bad because I enjoy karaoke more than most but would certainly not go back here. This place seems to be going the way of many other bars in downtown Austin, catering to the masses and losing that hometown Austin feel. I wish I would have gotten her name. If the manager sees this, the woman working the bar on Friday, August 13th is alienating your customers and simply terrible at what she does. Update: Gave the bar a call and spoke with the manager, who ended up the bartender than served me that night. No hope for this place, clearly the manager's attitude, general demeaner, and animosity towards customers is passed down to the rest of the staff based on the other reviews I read. I am here out of town. Was looking for a place to do karaoke. When entered into the bar they were very unwelcoming. Went to order a drink and the bartender gave us a hard time. I have only ever written 5 reviews on yelp&google etc on an establishment in my whole life. Also, I actually have NEVER, in my life, EVER, written a negative review about an establishment because I just never understood going out of your way to bash a place. That being said, do not waste your money here. Genuinely, austin has an assortment of amazing night life and you will definitely question why you decided to come here when you arrive. It may be because its located underneath a parking garage, or because as soon as you enter it will obvious that this is the epitome of the most divey-est, dirtiest bar to step foot in. AND I LOVE DIVE AND DIRTY BARS SO THAT AINT THE PROBLEM. The bar had a weird and confusing only buy two drinks policy. The karaoke had potential, but I told the uber driver on the way home never to come to this place, and I will ensure anyone I know who likes drinks and karaoke to never come to this place. ITS SO SAD! Because the drinks are cheaply priced but taste horrible tbh so i guess as long as you just don't try to have a good time lol, you may like this place. I wish I could give a zero. This place was filthy and the only thing going good good for it were two waitresses when we arrived. They were not as hospitable when it was before closing time. I arrived at 1:55 and I do have video proof for, and they served my friend but not me And I was the one that bought all the drinks and tipped. So I politely Asked for taking back the tip because of the lack of and this by who was obviously struggling and claimed he didnt run the bar asked me to leave. This is a small karaoke bar that is just outside the main downtown area. It's a tiny bar and has a maximum capacity that's easily met. We had to wait in line about 20 minutes on a Saturday night before we could get inside. The inside of the bar is small, as expected, and divey. The bar is small, so prepare to wait in line again. The tables and chairs look as if they were assembled from a hodgepodge of garage sale collections. The highlight is the karaoke stage. In order to perform, you have to sign up and the wait can also be long. There is a tv screen that shows the upcoming performers, name of the song that's on, and song lyrics. It makes for a great time because people can join and sing along. The vibe was fun and everyone that performed on stage had fun with it. This isn't the place where people take their karaoke seriously or where a performer will be judged. It's a lot of fun and a great little eclectic place that's different than the typical bars on Sixth Street. read more

NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE! I have never experienced a worse staff in my life. The bouncers and bartenders were belligerently drunk, and were screaming at people for adjusting their masks or taking them off briefly. They proceeded to make violent threats against family members (threats they were not physically or mentally capable of backing up). This is not your typical lame karaoke bar. This is an all out dance party. Came here with the baddest bia in town - Yelp Austin CM Kelly S - and a few others after a wild shindig. We were already feelln' it, so walking into this karaoke bar/dive dance club was a great feeling to be had. I had a great dirty vodka martini - er, maybe it was two - and was set for the night. No, I didn't sing, but you can bet yo a$$ I danced my pants off. Fun night guaranteed if you come with a group. Or even come solo and make a few friends. NOT sorry for partyin'. Note: This place is completely unassuming from the outside. It's actually parked in what looks like an apartment/condo complex. I arrived early for karaoke on a Friday night with the intention of saving seats for some people I was meeting up with but the place filled up fast and seating was soon in short supply. I quickly found myself surrounded by incredibly friendly people who fed me pizza and offered me drinks. The people I was meant to meet never posted but in hindsight I'm almost glad they didn't, I've hardly ever shown up at a place by myself and felt less alone. That said, there are a few things you should know: -Ego's is tiny and fills up quickly, get there early if you want to sit down immediately -The bar gets packed but the bartenders are competent. Drinks are cheap and poured generously -They don't hand out binders full of songs, there is a laptop stage-left where you can find your selection -Don't expect the wo/man running the show to call names in order of arrival. Be nice and pick a fun and recognizable song The place is a dive to be sure but the singers were unusually talented and got the crowd going. The goal is for everyone to have fun, not necessarily to give you a stage tough money talks. If you think this is unfair go somewhere else (or maybe show a little leg). If you keep these things in mind I find it hard to imagine that you'll have a bad time. I like to think that this place is called Ego's for a reason - if you don't check yours at the door then the joke is on you. read more

Not bad for karaoke...if you want to wait a least 2 hrs to sing. Showed up around 9 on a Saturday nite with some birthday party folks. We were already having fun prior to the spot, due to the "Party Bus". It wasn't that crowded upon arrival, and most folks were sitting round and watching the singers. I put in my song and i'm told 2 hours...wowza...And i'm not karaoke virgin...i've tasted most of the spots in town and outside of the ATX area..but hey I had good company so the time went ...well it went by. There's an adjourning stage in where I found myself dancing with some friends while others sang. The sound system was not bad...but also not that great either. The drinks were...well...ok..as I only had a couple of beers and no cocktails. 10 beautiful, positive women walked into this EMPTY bar on vacation and wanted to have fun!! We were hassled about masks and about our party of 10. The bouncer tried to help us out but the owner/bartender? who apparently doesn't own a bra, starts yelling at us because we're going to be trouble and become a 'blob' of people. To say it was a diamond in the rough would be an understatement. I've passed this place many times and never thought to go. Then a friend suggests it and I was interested enough to go with her. Group of 7 of us Uber to the small parking lot and fall out the van. Friday night around 10 there was a short line to go in. Some come out, some go in. It took about 15mins. When you get in you are treated by darkness and yelling (singing) The bar is small but just enough. Get you drink and try to find a seat. Or do like we did a wait for a pool table and play pool for a dollar. Tight quarters in the whole place but makes for a fun environment. My fiend put in a song request but never got called up, so we left. I'm sure when we left (almost 12) they called her name, lol. We had fun. One night, I accompanied my boyfriend there to drop off a CD, in hopes that he might get booked to play. It was a Wednesday night, and we walked into a crowded room of people cheering and applauding as a person on stage emoted fervently and dramatically. Yes, that's right: Slam Poetry. If you're not a Slam Poet, then I wouldn't recommend Wednesday nights. To me, it feels like you've walked into someone else's dimension, and that maybe you should not be there. If you've got friends playing (or poet slamming) there, then by all means, go see them! You can sit up right next to the stage (which is at floor level) for a very intimate experience. They will appreciate it, as in some venues (even the smaller ones), the musicians are perched up on a stage, far away from their listeners. p.s. The drinks aren't cheap. I'd like to think I'm a connoisseur when it comes to dive bars. This place is definitely a crap-hole of a dive bar. The bar is located at the bottom of a parking garage. The door person isn't friendly and you're not likely to get a smile or warm greeting from him. The bar is dimly lit with some loud karaoke. The bar area is small and when crowded can be a couple of people deep. There's some tables and chairs, a couple of pool tables, and some video games. The floor is sticky and the bathrooms are disgusting. The drinks are fairly cheap and sometimes pretty strong. My only issue with this place is that on the night I was there the bartender was an absolute wench. I understand it was very busy and there is only one person behind the bar. That's no excuse for poor service. Several members of my party were completely ignored multiple times when trying to get drinks (I hope there was no racial component in this). I had no issues getting a drink and ended up getting my Korean friends a couple of drinks. A good place for a cheap drinks and some karaoke. Don't expect anything close to good service. read more

Great Dive Bar, Bartenders and staff are super nice! The crowd is always encouraging and cheers for everyone who sings. Great place to meet people. The KJ has mostly been fair about the line up. You put a song in and you wait for your turn, which is reasonable. Con is only with this KJ on 11/23/18 - put in songs at 9:19pm, asked the KJ an estimated time we would be up. He said 1 hour and 20min. After an hour passed, decided to ask the KJ again, how long or how close we'd be up. (A bunch of people left the bar within that hour of waiting) He said we would be up in 2 hours. Doesn't make sense. So we left. I'll go back, this was only me time this has happened so far. Place gets super super super packed and there's always a line out the door. Suggestion: Get there before 9pm if you want to sing. read more

As you arrive you will notice there are blackout angels hovering around the cars, maybe getting some fresh air from a Marlboro 100 before they try to get past the bouncer again. Once in, you elbow your way to the bartender for some very cheap cold drinks. Great deal on Lone Stars! The whole inside sings along to the songs and the stage is a simple corner of the bar that you can wonder onto while someone is cranking out another audio gift to us all. Probably the best karaoke bar in Austin, and I really don't even like karaoke. Like seriously we always bring people from out of town here. It's kind of divey but I like that. This is Austin. C'mon. Karaoke isn't exactly a posh art. The stage is cool. They have a ton of songs to choose from. Drink prices are reasonable. And service is usually pretty on point. The door guy, on Friday night, thought he was too cool for everyone else, and in an effort to exert some kind of false superiority, was a complete jerk to my friend and wouldn't let him into the bar. We didn't know about an unstated rule about drinking a beer in the parking garage, and my friend was stone cold sober. We nicely explained the misunderstanding to the bouncer, who instead of acting like a rational human being, decided to make rude, intimidating comments. We were with a group of 14 people for a celebration, so it wasn't an inconsequential decision - a couple of us had to go somewhere else while everyone else was already inside. They are SERIOUS about karaoke. Not just excellent vocals, but the PERFORMANCE. If you're not an awesome entertainer, you may feel intimidated by Ego's. I'm not the best singer, but I like to make a fool of myself while singing every once in a while, and Ego's is okay for that. I like that they have a huge selection of songs and that they take requests that aren't in the book. And that the karaoke host (yes, they have one!) cheers me on when I'm feeling really lame and forgetting the melody to the song I'm about to sing. Oof. I like dive bars, but I don't see myself hanging out here without the karaoke...and it can sometimes take hours to get the chance to sing. read more
