This was our faaaavorite bar out of all the ones we visited on Sixth Street on a crazy Saturday night in July. This one was different. Sure it was insanely crowded and packed on both stories, but we loved having that open air and space to love around and dance on the rooftop. The music was ON POINT with my personal taste...ranging from electronic pop, alternative to contemporary music, and generally good music to dance to. There were some folks dance battling with one another, and others were just enjoying the drinks and the entire vibe. We had gin and tonic here and we were happy. We'll definitely come back if we're in the area again. Also, if you're into more traditional music and want to stray away from mainstream stuff, there was an awesome band singing covers of classic oldies that we really enjoyed too. I had the opportunity to check out Maggie Mae's earlier this month. SXSWedu held their Closing Party at Maggie Mae's and I attended. So, forewarning, this review is more of what the place is like during a hosted event, and may not represent the usual experience. Maggie Mae's is a large venue space with two levels. When I entered, security scanned by SXSWedu badge and ID'd me to confirm I was of age. They were adamant about that (especially since the party was open bar). On the street-level floor, there was a bar to your right and tables around the floor. First floor was packed. I wanted to check out the musical performance and DJ scheduled, so I went upstairs where the stage and dance floor were. On the second-floor rooftop, there were two bars - a larger one to the right and a smaller one closer to the stage/dance floor. The venue set up a taco/nacho table by the larger bar, where staff served ground beef for tacos and nachos (everything else was self-serve on the table). From the second-floor rooftop, there is an indoor second floor area (which I think is called the Gibson room). In there, the décor is luxe and sleek looking. The bar inside is pretty large, too. The bathrooms are also in this area. The sound on the second floor was good. The area around the stage got really crowded, so I stuck to one of the tables that overlook the street. There were some lounge-y couches, but not many people left their spots on them if they got one. Maggie Mae's was very nice. The bartenders and staff working the event were friendly, polite, and fun. Well it's located on 6th street so the vibe can sometimes be all over the place but when I went it was chill at least on the 1st floor but the rooftop level was a bit more lively with good 90s music and top 40 playing. The drinks are relatively priced decent enough and the bartenders are cool! If in the area this a place to stop at before heading to other bars. read more

First time on Dirty 6th Street, and this street is a strip of bars and lots, LOTS of people. It seems to be a great place for the party crowd. Maggie Mae's is pretty big on the inside. There are two levels, and both levels are pretty opened (not enclosed), and you can see the crowd on the streets as well as see the sky. Another thing I noticed since it's all open space, you can smoke "inside". There seems to be multiple rooms with different music and events going on so there's something for everyone here. I also noticed that the upper level was jammed packed (but the lower level was just right)! I think the drinks here were a little pricier than some of the other bars on the strip, but overall a very good experience here. read more

E 6th Street puts Bourbon Street to shame in someways. Bourbon St is definitely better though. Never would I think I would see so many wild college students all in one place, at least in NY they spread out the crazy! Maggie Mae's was our best option that night with every other establishment being so incredibly crowded. The DJ upstairs was not very good so we did not spend a long time in the upstairs, but the live band downstairs was AWESOME. We had so much fun listening to them, it definitely saved our night! This place is waaaay larger than it looks inside. Counted at least 4-5 bars throughout the venue. Plenty of places to get your drinks if people are crowded around the bar. Saturday night and it was busy, but not where you were packed like sardines. It is a great place when you're with a group of people as the space allows for it. That night the music was R&B/Hip-Hop ranging from the 90s to today. Definitely my type of music. I would come here again if I wanted to dance the night away. read more

A 6th street staple, there's nothing fancy about Maggie Mae's, but it does have it's own charm in a way. I like the venue itself, meaning it has a good layout and plenty of space, but it can still be hard to get a drink and when I did get mine (a simple whiskey sour) it wasn't very good, though that might be expected with a busy weekend crowd. Again, I think the space is pretty cool, so worth a look to hangout and listen to music, just don't expect anything too crazy! read more

As long as you go in with the expectation that this is on 6th street and appeals to a certain crowd, it's a great rooftop bar that provides you with one of the better views of the madness below, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night. I can't say the drinks are anything special and they didn't have anything more than a DJ playing on their big stage when we came in, but the layout of the place is definitely appealing. I asked the bartender (who looked just old enough to serve the drinks she was making) for a special shot for my brother's bachelor party and she whipped up a doozie. He didn't think much of the flavor but it started him down a dark path which we had every intention of leading him on. The drinks are a bit pricey, but again, this is 6th street, so if I were to fault them for that I would be faulting 40 other bars as well. Really the best thing here is the open air, large upstairs area. A lot of bars have rooftop areas and views of the street, but this is one of the best. read more

Because MM's was highly recommended (for music and such) by 'folk back home', we made this our 1st stop on Friday evening; 1st stop...like 6pm 1st stop. I don't think that's what the 'folk back home' intended, 6pm. But we did stop in, grabbed a seat at the bar, and listened to the single guitar vocalist and scanned about this joint. There were only 6 of us in the bar (including the tender and the guitar guy). Ordered a couple drinks. Plastic cups, huh. OK. Cool décor. The entry looks like it used to be open air, a courtyard now roofed. Two bars (if the two areas are of the same bar). To the right, in the courtyard like entry, is the longer narrow space with the stage at one end. Some clamshell style chairs, some leopard stuff, a tall wall banquette, barstools, and a cool colorful mural behind the bar. The other bar, through the open doorway at the far end of the courtyard, is smaller, quaint, some TV's, etc. Elvis is in the house. Pretty quiet this early in the evening. We wandered off and returned later in the later evening. Still pretty quiet. No music, just peeps wandering around. I would have liked to hit the rooftop deck .. if not for another drink then simply to take view of the crowded E 6th St party scene below. But we would have had another drink, just sayin'. read more

When we walked by Maggie Mae's at night, it seemed like a scene I wanted no part of. But on a quiet weekday afternoon, it was the perfect place to be. We grabbed a few longneck bottles, walked them upstairs past the "No Glass Upstairs" signs (we're rebels), and sipped them on the balcony as the sun went down. The rooftop is quite comfortable when no one else is up there, and we just relaxed and listened to the sounds of a talented singer playing somewhere else along 6th Street drifting over. And it was good. Now, I can imagine how the service at this huge bar with multiple rooms can suffer during SXSW, but personally I'm a big fan of the staff here. Two reasons: 1. I'm pretty sure one of them gave me too much change. I realized later on, and it makes me glad I tipped him well. 2. Someone took the time to add a check-in offer of $5 off Jigglewatts Tickets. I'm not sure what Jigglewatts Tickets are, but I like it. read more

Ok this was the first bar we started out on my last trip to Austin. The line to get in here is STUPID. It literally stretches past the bar next door. I must say it does move fast but with that many people it still took about 20 minutes, for a BAR! And once you got inside guess what? ANOTHER FREAKING LINE to go upstairs. I did enjoy the fact that the downstairs was open so you had an open air feel on the bottom floor. The upstairs is where this place is at. You can dance upstairs and their rooftop is one of the biggest on 6th. You can move around. Downstairs there was a live band playing. The drinks were fast, cheap, and strong, all good things for a bar. If it wasn't for the stupid lines I would like this place a lot more. read more

Maggie Mae's is no typical 6th street bar. MM's is outfitted with 6 rooms and a rooftop bar. Each separate room has different, unique decor. The New Orleans themed courtyard was a fun surprise but I really liked the rooftop as well. In spite of the huge venue, it was pretty packed when we came as it was a Saturday night. We were still able to get drinks no problem. The drinks were nothing special, but the service was good and I thought it was funny that they give you plastic cups. There are several stages for live performances, and it seems like it would be a good place to host different events. No night out would be complete without dropping in to Maggie Mae's as this place is really happening! read more

Maggie Mae's is kind of an interesting spot. I didn't really know about the whole dance floor ordeal but by this time things were most definitely getting messy for our group on 6th. We were subjected to an additional unknown quantity of drinks from various members, whom themselves probably couldn't count ... and off we were dancing our heads away. Good music, sticky dance floor and unfriendly bartenders. Apparently they won't give the guys water so only the girls can ask for it. Kind of strange... is this Vegas? because that's what they do in Vegas! .... Anyway, I have no idea what the food is like here,although I do know they serve some kind of food during the day. But at night its definitely the definition of "dirty 6th" ... beware and don't wear nice shoes! read more

Came on a weeknight in the summer, and I think it really helped with our experience here. The college kids had all gone home, and 6th street had not been bombarded by the weekend crowd, so we had plenty of space to move around, and it wasn't crowded. We wanted to find a nice patio to watch the NBA final game, and Maggie Mae's was the perfect choice. Their upstairs patio features two bars, a giant projection screen showing the game, and a water misting devices paired with fans equaled the perfect escape from the Texas heat. The staff was very friendly, and the $3 well drinks were tasty. We also had a great view of the street below. read more

We came here during SXSW on a Friday afternoon, so it wasn't crazy busy. They had two bands playing, one upstairs and one downstairs, very nice. We got our drinks and grabbed a great spot on the rooftop overlooking 6th street. This is one of the best spots on 6th for crowd watching. We saw some really interesting things and people from our perch, I highly recommend the view. I like the way they use their space to create different environments. If the rooftop isn't your thing, try out the downstairs patio, or one of the other bar areas. You're sure to find something that fits your mood. The drink prices were similar to the other clubs that are comparable. You can find a cheaper beer, but that place won't have the atmosphere or the view. read more

I was just walking up and down 6th St, not knowing where to go when me and my friend saw this bar with a whole bunch of people just partying up in the rooftop patio. We saw that there was not a long line to get into the bar so we said, "eh, why not?" and joined the line. Turned out, we only had to wait a couple of minutes for the dude at the door to check ID's and we got in. We immediately went upstairs and waited to order our drinks. The place was packed, but I didn't have to wait too long for the bartender to come help me with my order. And in the process, he even apologized for the wait. Come on! What bartender would apologize for making their customers wait? This one did!! Awesome. The rooftop was nice. It wasn't too crazy on a Friday night. And this place has other options. Downstairs, they had somebody performing some ska music up on the stage and everybody was enjoying it. Upstairs, right next to the patio, you can enter into a room where they had another band performing live. The crowd didn't seem pretentious like most bars in Houston, TX where I'm from. It's a nice place to hang out and the drinks aren't too expensive. Be sure to come by and check this place out if you have the chance. read more

Came on Saturday night, March 1st, of Mardi Gras weekend. Lots of people outside. Quick to get inside Maggie Mae's. Use the small entrance just left of the big main entrance. Line to go upstairs where music videos are projected on ceiling but the best place to stay is downstairs near the rightmost bar with the live music. That night, Sam Pace and the Gilded Girl was playing, which is a fantastic group. They merge Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Led Zeppelin,... good music! Ordered a Whiskey Sour. First time having it and it is pretty good. Don't even really taste the whiskey, definitely hit the sour part for sure, but not bad. Great variety of people, young, old, male, female, normal dressed, hipster, crazy dressed. I enjoyed the vibe, atmosphere, music, and drinks here. Didn't try any other bars but this place was nice. read more

I've also noticed that the drinks are cheap (a shot, a double shot, and a beer for $11), but seemingly watered down. If I drank at home like I drank in Austin, I'd be comatose. Loved the outdoor patio/garden and the music. There are lots of musicians playing in the bars down 6th street, but the outdoor patio area and the music playing at the time drew us into this bar. The space is very large and they had have both outdoor and indoor seating. You can enjoy the music even if you choose to sit inside-- they have window walls that they open up. read more

I got pretty wasted at Maggie Mae's and I'm not complaining. Visited Austin this past weekend and went to Maggie's after a couple drinks and dinner. There's a large outdoor area, bar included, and a large dance floor. They had a DJ on a Friday night playing top 40. They also have an indoors area which is more of a lounge type area. They also had music inside but it was different music and people weren't dancing. More of a chill atmosphere outside. Drinks were about average price. Just a little hot to be dancing all night long in July in Texas. read more
