Well this was an amazing find. After not finding a spot at a usually reliable place, we decided to try this out. What a revelation! 1. The bartender (featured in one of the pics) was amazing 2. When chef heard about a dietary issue, on the fly, invented a perfect dish (in the pics) that I wish I could eat every day. The shrimp, broccolini and salsa verde was epic. 5. The space, a huge upgrade from the previous tenant, was soooo well done. Just fantastic all around. I do hope this becomes a 'must go' place because it is worth it. Top notch dinner for my husband's birthday! Our waiter was awesome and food was excellent! The arancini was very cheesy throughout instead of just in the middle, and lightly crunchy on the outside. We had the bread service which I HIGHLY recommend. The semolina bread was the best I've ever had with whipped ricotta - delicious. Main entrees were veal Parmesan and the house made jumbo ravioli. We had reservations for dinner on a Thursday at 5:00pm. Wasn't really needed as we were one of the first folks not there for Happy Hour. We had a nice booth and enjoyed the Italian music playing softly in the background. I ordered my typical Hendricks martini with blue cheese olives and have to say the blue cheese olives here are the best tasting olives I've ever had. We had been to this restaurant once before and remembered the Burrata and were disappointed that they were "out", apparently some shipping delays from Italy. Instead we split one of their salads which was quite good and worked well with the bread service we had ordered. I choose the Bucatini All'Amatriciana pasta dish and thought it was fantastic. Pasta was perfectly cooked, sauce was delicious. I asked for some parmesan cheese and that made it perfect. My wife enjoyed her Chicken Piccata. Now for the best part...If you are a Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card holder; Madrina is one of two restaurants in St. Louis where you get a $150 credit twice a year. This review is based on their happy hour- their aperitivio, aka the happiest of hours! 4-6pm Sunday & Tuesday-Friday! Saw that they had a happy hour when walking by a few weeks ago and decided to try it. It was amazing! We walked in on a Friday at 4 with no reservation and had the choice of inside or outside. Outside you have the ambiance of Old Webster and inside is elevated, sleek, and warm. The entire wait staff was so friendly and attentive! The hostess was a ray of sunshine- the bartender took our orders and made our drink, another gentleman served us and our check was given to us by a manager. This was a cohesive waitstaff- truly awesome! We got a round of spritz' (Hugo) for $7 and pizzas for $9. It was a great deal and very delicious! The happy hour menu was extensive between the drinks and food and I am excited to be back for completely different things to order. Another thing I appreciated about Madrina was that I felt like I was back in Italy. Calling happy hour aperitivo is a nice touch, but even moreso we were there for at least an hour after we stopped ordering things and not once did they rush us out- we requested the check just like in Italy. Sad to say, I was not really that impressed. As we experienced their Happy Hour the phrase, "Lipstick on a Pig" came to mind. They tried to create an upscale look and feel with their ambiance, but the product and service fell short. I'll start off by saying, they have a good Happy Hour with vey affordable pricing on classic cocktails. I was able to enjoy three of my all-time favorites; Black Manhattan, Martini and Old Fashioned (they call theirs, Italian Fashioned). All three of them were made well and I was impressed with the glassware and stemware they were served in. My friend drank Prosecco and it was served in a fluted glass. The major disappointment was with our food order. I ordered the Calamari and it was very bland. Hardly any flavor at all. The Buttermilk Herb Dressing, really didn't help much with the taste. I was disappointed that they were mainly just small rings, just tossed into a bowl. There were really only two nice sized pieces of pure calamari. Our other food item was one of their pizzas. We choose, Finocchiona. The Fennel Salami, Tomato and Mozzarella were great toppings, but the thin limp crust made it fall short. If the pizza is going to be STL Thin crust, it needs to be crisp. We both got a good giggle, because almost at the same time we both said, could this be a frozen pizza. It just did not have that freshly made taste. Madrina is a gem in the heart of Webster. The ambiance is upscale but not pretentious. The bar is the perfect place for happy hour. Highly recommended the calamari (perfectly cooked). Coupled with an Italian Fashion, a dirty martini or a lovely espresso martini. For dinner I recommend the raviolo!! If you are interested in a salad I would recommend the Hill salad. My friend loves this place and said it was a bit off tonite after our meal. That said, here's our experience - the place had a fabulous vibe, decor, lighting, comfortable seating. Service was tremendous. From the host and hostess to our server to every staff member we encountered they were attentive, responsive, professional and friendly. Onto the food. We had a party of 5 and it was a 50-50 evening with half of our party rating the food a 4, the other 3-3.5. Highlights - arancini, calamari (though it should come with marinara - we had to ask for some), Mayfair salad, pollo piccata. The two friends who gave less than a 4 had the bolognese and the raviolo. I had the veal Parmesan which was huge (two meals worth). The veal was a little overdone - so it need more sauce for moisture. It was served with pasta which was nicely al dente but lacked anything much, the side of arugula was nice. All dishes were beautifully presented. For dessert we shared with limoncello sorbet and all gave it 5 stars - generous portion, perfectly tart and not too sweet, more elevated flavor than your usual lemon sorbet. 1st time here did not start out well. The 2 girls at the hostess stand were terrific. The bartenders not so much. Not busy, maybe 1 other couple at the bar with 5 small tables of people that they had to serve. However, 10 minutes went by without even eye contact or a "hey, I see you, be with you as soon as I can." Stilll waiting and a new couple sits down and immediately get's taken care of with waters first which we didn't even get talked to. Absolutely unacceptable. I walked away and went to get our table that was then ready. The hostess apologized and I mentioned that she might want to let the manager know but no one ever came to talk to us. Esther (SJ?) was awesome as was Lindsay and Maria who all took care of our table but someone needs to be held accountable at the bar. I visited Madrina while in town for a business dinner, and its location near the Webster University area is certainly a plus. Parking was relatively convenient--street parking is available, and there's a nearby lot about a block away if needed. Upon arrival, the restaurant immediately gives off a refined, upscale atmosphere that feels well-suited for business dining or a special night out. Service was a standout. The dining room manager handled our group and was engaging, attentive, and polished throughout the evening. Service overall was excellent and well-paced. One logistical quirk worth noting: there is only one restroom on the dining room floor, with additional facilities located downstairs, which felt like a slightly odd setup for an otherwise thoughtfully designed space. As for the food, expectations were set extremely high by the enthusiastic and somewhat over-the-top menu descriptions--phrases along the lines of "the most amazing thing you'll ever taste." Unfortunately, while the food was good, it didn't quite live up to that level of hype. The calamari appetizer and Mayfair salad were both solid and enjoyable. The whole branzino was visually impressive, with the head and tail removed tableside, making for a nice presentation. I did encounter a bone, however, and the accompanying white bean side fell short of expectations--the beans weren't as creamy or flavorful as anticipated. Overall, Madrina delivers a very good dining experience, particularly in terms of service and atmosphere. While the food was good to okay rather than exceptional, it was still enjoyable. The bar looked like a great spot for happy hour or just drinks. Staff were friendly and attentive. Our server was helpful with choosing dishes. Unfortunately, we were not impressed with the food. My wife and I were bummed when CJ Mugg's closed in Old Webster, but curious to try the restaurant that replaced it. We finally made that choice for Valentine's Day dinner last night, and we don't regret it. Madrina did a wonderful job renovating the space to create an elegant romantic atmosphere with warm low lighting and a soundtrack of pop standards. Service was very attentive and accommodating - despite the holiday crowd size, we never had to wait long for a water refill or a check in our cocktails (both of which were smooth, unique, and delicious). We split a house salad to start - I'm not typically a huge fan of this particular salad style, but really enjoyed the taste and texture of the artichoke hearts (which are very hit-or-miss to my palate). For the main course, we both ordered medium filets. The preparation felt a bit closer to medium-rare for my taste, but still satisfying and the accompanying roasted mushrooms and béarnaise sauce were excellent compliments to the steaks. The rich aroma of other pastas and seafood filled the dining room, and I'm curious to explore more of the menu on a future date night. On that note, if dining here over the weekend, you should probably make reservations. We started with some misto fritto - lightly battered crispy shrimp, calamari, artichokes, and fennel served with Buttermilk herb dressing. The serving was huge and the flavor did not disappoint. Needless to say, it was a fabulous start to our dinner. I ended up ordering the prime ribeye during this meal and it was fantastic. I clearly over-ordered but the leftover was just as tasty the next day! Then I had some cannoli to end the dinner with. The rest of our meal went really well and the service was fabulous. What I've had during my other visit - Mayfair salad with prosciutto and Mayfair dressing was lovely and had so much flavor. Linguini con vognole - I generally like pasta with clam but wasn't sure about this one. It wasn't bad but not my favorite. Tiramisu was divine and a great way to end your evening, no question! Made a reservation here for a date night. The decor and the atmosphere were perfect. Lighting was a little low but it added to the overall feel for the restaurant. My date was going through water very fast but there was always someone there to promptly refill the glass, along with remove empty dishes. Everyone was welcoming. I had a Hugo Spritz and my date had a Negroni. Both were solid and delicious. The food is where the evening fell short. We had three appetizers - arncini, oysters and bread spread. The arncini did not disappoint - flavorful and perfectly cooked. The bread spread was ok - the focaccia was good enough to eat on it's own but the Sicilian bread was over toasted and not that great, even with the spreads. The spreads included garlic butter (lacking in actual garlic), whipped ricotta, and mustarda. The oysters, according to my date, where over cooked and tiny - tasted burnt. For the main dishes, we had the Cappellaci pasta and the veal parmigiano. Both dishes lacked flavor overall. The cappellaci was very bland, no flavor at all, except for the crab meat. I wanted to ask for additional chili dust to flavor it up a bit. I did ask for parmesean cheese to give it some additional flavor. I'm not a salt person, but that dish could have definitely used a dash of salt or some type of additional flavoring. The sauce in the dish was more watery, then creamy. According to my date, the veal was fine. It was one of the only good parts of the meal, outside the arncini. However it was served with pasta that had no taste or sauce on it - I assume because you're supposed to eat it with the veal but he didnt end up touching it. We were so disappointed in the food that we opted out of doing dessert. We expected better quality for the prices. I went on Christmas Eve so the restaurant was extremely festive which is what I like for a Christmas Eve dinner! It was plenty of seating and was appropriately spaced out. The bar was in the middle of the restaurant...and I normally take that as a sign that the drinks are good! Lol. The wait staff was extremely attentive from the start. My water glass never got empty! The food was absolutely AMAZING! I started with grilled oysters that was so good I almost ate the shell! For dinner I got the Pollo Marsala with Brussels sprouts and fingerling potatoes...all very tasty! The check was literally falling off the bone! I also tried their espresso martini flight which is probably the best deal you can get! The amount of drink in the cocktail for flights was extremely satisfying. We went to a Christmas party at this restaurant last year and it was lovely. We couldn't wait to go back. We went for my birthday a week later it was ok, not amazing like the party. Tonight we decided to try it again. As we were walking in we saw a flyer that their sommelier received the James Beard award. Very cool. This person ended up being our server, her name is Alicia. We were warm and congratulatory to her. She told us they had a new chef from the last time we were there. When she heard I couldn't drink wine, and only my husband, her demeanor turned snobbish. She was never at any point warm or kind or pleasant in any way. We started with the Calamari. There was a little bit of calamari in there but it was mostly fennel and artichokes(we don't really like the latter). The sauce was wonderful. CALAMARI FRITTI Crisp lightly battered calamari, artichokes, fennel, buttermilk herb dressing GF $23 We declined salads and she asked us if we wanted bread service before our entrees. We said sure. I've never been charged for it before but let's be honest, it was the best part of the evening. Don't skip the bread if you go. HOUSE-MADE BREAD Sicilian bread, focaccia, ricotta, mostarda, roasted garlic butter $10 My husband and I were going to get the porterhouse steak to share. It was out and we chose to get T bone steaks instead. My daughter got Veal Parmigiana and it was beautiful and delicious. When my steak with potatoes arrived it was beautiful! I took a picture. I took 3 bites and found the steak and potatoes very very bland, like unseasoned. The server did stop by and ask my husband if he would like the horseradish sauce we had discussed earlier. We responded affirmatively. It never arrived. I couldn't even ask for salt and pepper because she was completely absent. Visiting other tables around us but just not visiting ours. I waited at least 30 minutes but no server. My husband ate a decent amount of his steak but found it difficult. It was quite chewy and unfortunately now that we are home his tummy is giving him issues. He said his glass of wine was very nice. While we ate our disappointing appetizer we heard her tell a nearby table the desserts. They sounded divine. We were for sure staying for dessert even if we didn't finish our steak and had to take it home. I left a 10% tip and requested it went to the busboy. We eat out at nice restaurants a decent amount. And we are willing to pay for a very nice meal. Sadly, we won't be returning. We left $312 poorer. And before someone asks why we didn't speak up my husband would be uncomfortable so I chose to leave a message on the bill and leave a fair and balanced review when we get home. Putting this place to 4 stars for now. Starting off with the food, we ordered the fire roasted oysters and calamari as a starter. Oysters had great flavor but I wish they could've been a little bigger in size. Calamari being fresh cut was decent, sauce helped a good bit with the flavor. Moving to the main course, we ordered the steak and sides of the potato's, Brussels sprouts, and broccolini. Definitely enjoyed all the sides especially the Brussels sprouts and fire roasted broccolini. The steak had great flavor but was a little more rare than what we have preferred, but I have no complaint about that, I'd rather be a bit under done than overdone. Then we got tiramisu for dessert which was good, no complaints there as well. Service was great, attentive staff and very helpful. We were in a dinner rush so service to us was a bit slow in the beginning which was very understandable, but got better as the night went on. Ambiance of the store was nice, definitely a nice place for a date night. Only complaint was that the 2 person tables were super small. Luckily we didn't have any extra stuff on the table at that time. Price is on the higher side so prepare yourself on that. All staff very friendly and professional. Perfect atmosphere and decor for a cozy dinner. The bad: The food. It all looked amazing, but that was about it. Had the veal Parmigiano. Just tasteless. Could only eat about a fourth of it. The noodles were quite cold and not even cooked to al dente level. Actually had to send the noodles back- something I rarely do. A new batch came lukewarm. Another person at our table had the eggplant Parmesan and had same issues with their entree and noodles. To their credit, the kitchen did try to make it right. I had an aperol spritz, my new favorite drink, and my husband had the lemoncello spritz. We ordered the margherita pizza, the porcetta sliders and the calamari. The porcetta sliders were okay. My husband and I tried Madrina for the first time this past Friday night for a date night. We made a reservation online and this was definitely the right call! This place was super popular and busy on a Friday night, so I highly recommend making a reservation just in case. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant is great. Our server and the other service staff helping with filling waters and clearing food were all very friendly and helpful. It never felt like we were being bombarded with people popping in, but also they made sure to check in at the right frequency. For drinks, I ordered the NA*groni, their non-alcoholic Negroni. I always appreciate when there are mocktails and NA options on the menu, and they had a few options here. The rest of the actual cocktail menu looked amazing! For appetizers, we ordered the Whipped Ricotta and the off-the-menu special of Arancini. Both were very delicious. We both agreed the arancini was probably the star of the show for us for the whole meal. It was the best I've had - with a different take on arancini by taking out the peas and adding aged provolone in the middle, which made the balls super cheesy and delicious. For entrees, I ordered the Crêpe Manicotti and my husband ordered the off-the-menu night special Eggplant Parmesan. Both were very delicious. The manicotti is made with crêpes instead of the traditional pasta, which was so cool and added a nice texture change-up. The spinach filling was great, and the red sauce and green sauce that came with were both very tasty. The eggplant parmesan had really good flavoring and was the perfect amount after having our appetizers. We will definitely be back!! Wonderful steaks cut in house! Risotto was really fantastic! Service was great and very attentive to our needs.

You can't miss out on Madrina's happy hour! Calabrian chili oyster give just the right amount of heat. The mushroom pizza has the perfect crunch on bottom the bottom of the crust without being burnt and the variety of mushrooms steps it up a notch. The Madrina-tini is the best martini I've had in STL! Come see why the got a James Beard beverage service nomination. Shout out to Alisha Blackwell-Calvert, job well done! We tried Madrina for the first time for our NYE dinner. After reading several negative reviews I was a bit worried, but truly this place was amazing! Our server explained the menu to us, the ambiance of this place is so moody and relaxing and all the food was delicious. We had to try the whipped ricotta which was define and our waiter even brought out extra bread so we could finish it off! My husband had the veal parmigiana and I had the pork gnocchi. These dishes are elegantly made- no extra seasonings needed. Really simple but so so good. We both enjoyed our drinks. My husband really liked the Italian Manhattan and ended up getting a second one! read more
