I have to be honest with you. I didn't know anything about St. Louis before I visited here for a few days. I certainly wasn't expecting the food scene to be so excellent. I had my first dinner of my stay at Olive + Oak, and it blew me away from the moment I laid my eyes on it. From the unsuspecting street outside, the giant windows glow with the warm, sparkling light from within. An elegant dining room with a beautiful bar and a good amount of hustle and bustle. I felt like I was at an upscale New Orleans joint. Very cozy. Service was just as beautiful. Our server was extremely nice, new the menu backwards and forwards, and rattled off the nightly specials without hesitation. And on top of all of that, when we were getting some stuff to-go, she threw in more bread for us! You can't train that level of service. That's just a good person. Onto the food. We started off with the Blue Crab Gratin (calabrian chili, celery + pretzel bread). This was ooey, gooey, cheesy, delicious, had a fair amount of crab in it, had a nice little kick, and the sliced, crunchy pretzel bread dippers were exquisite. Something seasonal that isn't on their menu anymore, we ordered an Okonomiyaki, which is a savory Japanese pancake, basically, covered in sauce. Wow, this thing was done well. Very reminiscent of the authentic thing I've had in Japan. Very nice. Another dish that isn't on the menu anymore, the Catfish dish. It was slightly Asian and on top of some sort of risotto rice. I can't remember exactly, but I do remember that it was very well cooked, had a nice char. An eclectic dish that came together very nicely. I also got to try some of the Rabbit Crepe (port wine braised rabbit, blueberry, fennel, arugula + kenny's bleu gouda crepe). Some people might shudder at the idea of eating rabbit. Those people need to grow up. Rabbit is one of the most succulent, delicious meats out there, and in this wonderful flavor combination, in a crepe. This chef is genius. I could have downed two of these things. We finished off the night with the recommended Cloud Cake (vanilla chiffon cake, coconut pastry cream, coconut + whipped cream icing). This thing was de-ca-dent. A nice, thicc sponge, a very coconuty cream, and a whipped icing with lots of coconut pulp in it. So heavenly. Overall, my socks were blown off. Not only does St. Louis have good food, this was a better meal than I had in Nashville and Kansas City. Who would have guessed. I would love to come back. read more

Mains were oversalted and the crust on the burger tasted more burnt than anything. Brussel side was meh. Asparagus was ok. Rabbit main was oversalted and I bit into a bone fragment. In town from Houston to met my family - Olive + Oak was able to accommodate- even when we increased from 6 to 7. We appreciated their flexibility and ability to accommodate under short notice. Really enjoyed the dinner & food. Bread was slow coming to the table on this busy night but, nothing unusual during the busy holiday season. The ambiance overall was beautiful. I selected the gaucho steak & my fiancé ordered the goat ragu. The rest of the family was each able to find something to meet their palette including my sister who's vegetarian & gluten intolerant. The steak was cooked perfectly. It did not come with any veggies which felt a little odd. A couple asparagus to the side would have rounded out the meal but, the flavor was there for the steak. This place has been on my list forever and WOW!! For my birthday this year, I wanted to try a "progressive dinner," and do three stops (apps, entree, dessert at separate locations)--Olive + Oak was our first stop last night. We ordered from their current house cocktails (unfortunately I missed which numbers, and can't seem to get the menu to pull up on their website at the moment)--and loved both. The one pictured in the pineapple had a nice spice and the other was sweet and delicious! We tried the Blue Crab Gratin which was well worth the price. Very crab-forward and decadent--the pretzel crisps that came with it were perfection. We followed that with some raw oysters (mix of east and west) which had every accompaniment you could ever want. They were fresh and high quality. I missed taking a photo, unfortunately. Our server (unfortunately missed her name) was a dream. She checked in with us appropriately and was very professional and kind. The ambiance was perfect--airy and comfortable, but not overly bright. The high ceilings and enormous windows were lovely and made the space feel super special. There were families but it was still a comfortable volume, definitely still amazing for a quiet date night. From the moment you walk in the doors you are greeted with an earthy green space. We made reservations, which I highly recommend, so we were seated immediately. Our server was extremely attentive and ensured that we had everything we could possibly need. The food was superb. Highly recommend the cheese curds!! Celebrated a friend's birthday here last night and the entire experience was spectacular!! For starters, I ordered a trio of oysters - the west coast (my fav), roasted, and fire roasted oysters - definitely can't go wrong here.. yum! I also split a Caesar salad and the crumble with the dressing paired so well. The beef tartare was also ordered and they enjoyed it! For entrees, I had the waitress surprise me. She brought the buttonwood farms chicken! It was different and something I've never tried before. Good and unique! Other entrees that were ordered: the beef tenderloin, prime cowboy ribeye, the burger, and the halibut. Every dish got a glowing review! I snagged a bite of the steak and it was so so delicious! Also, don't skip the fries with the house sauce.. a very important tip. While everyone else ordered dessert to go, I decided to end with the coconut kiss martini. I finally got a chance to come to this restaurant. It was everything I expected and more! I had to get a 9:30 PM reservation because there was nothing available earlier and I can see why. The place was buzzing inside and out. There was a bar set up outside on the curb... I didn't know if there was a special event going on or what but the inside reminded me of a restaurant I would see on the show The Bear on Hulu! I love the way it was set up, I loved the Long bar in the back of the restaurant and how open it was. The scene was comfortable, and the service was excellent. Our waitress was very attentive and made a lot of good recommendations. You could tell she knew the menu. Speaking of the menu, I attempted to get everything on the right side of the menu because I was hungry lol. We started with the wings, which were absolutely awesome, seasoned to perfection. We also had some oysters and wanted to try multiple versions. We tried the Rockefeller, roasted, and the fried. All were excellent. I had the flank steak and my sister had the grilled salmon. I also had the brussels sprouts which were good but not the best that I've had but it wasn't bad enough to change the rating of the restaurant. I am absolutely coming back for happy hour really soon. The fries were some of the best I have had- super crispy and very well seasoned. The burger was great too. For dessert, they brought out the banana bread with a candle. The owners founded the Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation and they give away little felt hearts and sell larger hearts you will see around - especially on houses in Webster. Besides being connected to a wonderful organization and locally owned - the food, service, and ambiance are fantastic. I always get the burger (and add bacon, trust me) with their seasoned fries - my fave burger in STL! They are touted to have amazing oysters and other fancier fare as well. We started with an appetizer of wings - a lovely, sticky ginger sauce that made the accompanying warm wash cloths completely necessary. "New house, new salad" spring mix greens with sunflower seeds and a light dressing made the perfect transition to dinner. The baked clams with a sesame sauce were the perfect winter dish. This place is beautiful. The interior is seamlessly elegant. It feels like you're surrounded by business meetings and anniversary dinners. But, not in a stuffy, uptight way. In more of a the masses run to this place because of how smooth, sleek, and peaceful it is. It is intimate, but lively. The food is insane. I had the chicken a la king which is basically a deconstructed (or reverse) chicken pot pie. Wonderfully umami with the mushrooms. The gravy is a bit acidic and the chicken was tender and juicy. The thick slice of union loafers sourdough absorbs all of the gravy sending you on a flavor filled journey with every bite. The tomahawk was insane. Melts in your mouth with a beautiful butter to complement. Don't let the price tag run you off, it is a must order. Oh, and the barrage of crispy, seasoned fries are incredible. Salty, savory, and when dipped in the malt vinegar aioli: bliss. Everything we ate was superb. I can't wait to get back and try their dip. It looks absolutely beautiful. The people who run this restaurant are good at what they do. The decor is fabulous. The waiter we had was so knowledgeable. You could tell he was a professional and not someone who is just waiting on tables. The owners run another restaurant next to this one and same thing applies. On a Monday night just days after Christmas the place was packed! Let's get to the food. There's a reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5. As an appetizer the Blue Crab Gratin with crispy pretzel bread was excellent. I could have eaten that all night. The vegetable Lentil Soup was a little weak. The menu says "hearty and delicious". It was fair to good at best. Honestly I couldn't tell if it was home made in the restaurant or came from an institutional can. So that was weak. With restaurant prices today, and our bill for 2 was over $100 (no drinks or desserts), I expect perfection and the bar has been raised. The Venison Loin with fontina thyme risotto cake and port wine fig jus was very good, favorable without being "gamey" and cooked perfect. Although the risotto was so creamy I wasn't sure what it was. It was almost a sauce vs the way risotto usually is. The Grilled Pork Chop with smoked cheddar cake, charred Brussels sprouts and caramelized honey coffee and chipotle glaze was excellent, unique and again cooked perfectly. Although the Brussels sprouts were horrible. And honestly, not edible. We get Brussels sprouts a lot and even prepare them at home. This was no more than with sprouts with WAY too much salt. Literally we could not eat them. Again, with prices the way they are and reading their mission statement it seems like the side dishes or appetizers are the weak link here and that's why I gave them 4 stars and not 5. read more

As a vegetarian I was intrigued with the lions mane steak. Let me tell you I was at dinner with two hearty meat eaters and they both tried this incredible dish and decided it was the tastiest thing ever. It was amazing and it has been a very long time since I've eaten meat, but it tasted like a steak, even to the most discerning foodies. The drinks were amazing and creative and flavorful. Parking was fairly easy to find on the street for a Tuesday afternoon. I love places that have creative menus with flavor combinations that I haven't tried before. I Sat at the bar for happy hour and ordered their oysters and Jamaican jerk hummus from their regular menu. It took a while for the hummus to come out, but the oysters were a little quicker. Had one of the hands down BEST dining experiences in Olive + Oak last night. My boyfriend and I met up with another couple and tried so many different menu items--ALL were outstanding! As for starters, the chicken wings, charred octopus, and lions mane "steak" were absolutely delicious. While I didn't try it personally, my boyfriend and his best friend loved the beef tartare as well! All of our entrees were amazing, my Ruth Family Farms flank steak was perfection. Literally melted in my mouth, despite being a leaner cut. The roasted potatoes that came with it were also so delightful. We of course had to finish off with some desserts; butterscotch pot de creme, cloud cake, Swedish sticky chocolate cake, and the vegan skillet cookie. All incredible! There were plenty of gluten-free options for my boyfriend who has celiac, and our server was sure to point out any changes that could be made to any dish to make it gluten free if applicable--he was also very friendly! For starters, we had the house salad made with local greens, shredded carrots, cucumber, sunflower seeds and white cheddar, all topped with a sweet onion vinaigrette. I've been to Olive + Oak a few times and have somehow never gotten around to reviewing! It is one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis, and one of the best places to go for a special occasion or celebration dinner! The restaurant is super open and pretty, and can seat a lot of people. I try to make reservations but I went last Friday and two of us were able to get a table around dinner time. Service is always perfect - super attentive and knowledgeable. Menu is always changing! I've had a few different appetizers, never disappointed. I LOVE the bread and butter! Cocktail menu is extensive and I always try something new and unique. For dinner, I've gotten the dip every single time. It might be my favorite sandwich in all of St. Louis and the au jus is PERFECT. I also think they have some of the best fries, the seasoning is amazing and they are so crispy!
