Ordered a medium burger and got a raw piece of trash. They also undercooked my wife's burger and forgot sauce we paid $4 for. Don't order from here, garbage food now. Went downhill in a hurry.

Can't believe I haven't "posted" about this place before. For us it's in the neighborhood and easy to take for granted and whomever you are you feel like you're part of the neighborhood when you visit. Great quality fresh food and delish cocktails and fun service. Consistent- family owned and run- solid warmth every single time

I consider this to be a "sleeper" restaurant. I picked it for its location, not because I'd heard anything about it. But everything about it was top notch. The ambiance is elegant without being uncomfortable. A friend and I came here before attending a play. I ordered the grilled chicken and it was absolutely wonderful! My friend let me nibble on her Butcher Block a bit and that braunschweiger was DIVINE! I have to say, the cinnamon ice cream on the Apple Crisp was SO perfect. Our server was the ideal combination of attentive and knowledgeable. I felt their prices were reasonable considering the quality of the food and service.

The Block salad was amazing!! Generous toppings and a lovely dressing. Highly recommend. Ale and Cheddar dip with homemade pretzel was also very good. The pretzels were piping hot and so delicious. I had the grilled chicken breast over whipped mashed potatoes with fresh green beans. The chicken was well seasoned. The mashed potatoes with a brown gravy were very salty. My dining partner ordered the rib eye which was perfectly cooked to medium rare and well seasoned. Our server was attentive and the atmosphere intimate.

Wanted something light for dinner so I opted for the block salad which had bacon and ham. Unbeknownst to me that the salad is mostly meats, I added grilled chicken to the salad. In short skip add on for the salad next time. The chicken add on was deliciously flavored but it was tough (overcooked). The rest of my company had the burger and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Sidewalk dining available on nice weather. Three stars for now, till my next visit which I hope will be much better choice on my part - really should have had the burger as this is what they advertise to be their expertise. Everything in Webster Grove is city parking lot as establishments have very limited space around their vicinity, so expect to walk a little. Service was good.

I could have very easily only given The Block 3 Stars. This seemed to be a mixed bag of results. The Block on Lockwood in Webster, is owned by Marc Del Pietro and Brian Doherty. Both graduates of The Culinary Institute of America and lots of high end experience. Known as a restaurant & butcher shop, their mission statement is simple. Create and showcase a farm fresh, seasonal menu that sources the very best of local ingredients. They also perform the primary and secondary butchery of the livestock they serve in house which is kind of cool to know. They also have a small display case in the front of the restaurant of fresh cut meats you can prepare at home. All that is a good and well but it all has to best cooked and le related well. The Apple Salad might have been the best thing of everything we ordered. With roasted thin sliced honey crisp apples, spinach and arugula, cranberries, candied pecans and red wine vinaigrette, this was an awesome salad bursting with flavors! We got the grilled sourdough bread with bacon jam. The grilled sourdough came from a local bakery and was grilled to perfection. Sorry to say the signature bacon jam hit you over the head with a very heavy salty glob of I don't know what. Very little bacon taste and too much whatever they seasoned it with. The loaded fries SOUNDED amazing. Can't argue with garlic herb fries, ground ribeye, cheddar, scallions, and Sriracha aioli. In reality it was a jumbled soggy mess that was hard to eat. Way overloaded with cheese. The ground ribeye either was a very cheap cut, they seasoned bad, they didn't care, or who knows what. It just wasn't worth the calories to get it. They need to simplify it. The ribeye was very good. Wasn't the best steak I ever had but was good. Not quite sure it justified the price of almost $50. There are better steaks in St. Louis. The green beans it came with were a little crispy. Some people like them that way, some people like them a little softer. The vanilla pound cake with blood orange curd, and crème faiche sure sounded good. I'm used to something sweeter. The crème faicha tasted like whipped cream without the sugar, or almost like yogurt without sugar. I even said it was more like sour cream. I took it off. The blood orange curd was good but overall, based on the size, the cost and the crème, WAY overrated. The atmosphere was good however a little too dark. Simple, woody, upscale simplicity. I would maybe try it again but like I said, mixed bag.

Bolognese gnocchi

The Block was delightful! My partner and I were food hopping in Webster the other evening and decided to stop in for a bite and a drink. We sat at the bar - tended by the lovely Jill. For our meal there we each had a glass of wine and, by Jill's recommendation, shared the off-the-menu bolognese gnocchi. Y'all!! It was absolutely delicious! Even as a shareable it honestly could have been a whole meal. Definitely go and get it before it's gone. Service was great and the ambiance was good.

We have been waiting to come back to the Block for quite some time. There is always a long wait for dinner. This time we arrived early at 530 and there are plenty of tables available. Highly recommend using their online waitlist option if you are coming during prime time. Great service by staffs since walking through the door. Very relaxed atmosphere and great for both dinner date and family/friend gathering. Not too loud to have conversations during dinner. High quality and well seasoned steaks. One of the best crispy garlic herb french fries in town! The fried green tomatoes (I think this was on special menu) were delicious and we would order this again for appetizer.

Excellent service, delicious food, tasty beverages, and good location. I can't wait to go back. The whipped feta was so good that I took it home in a box and ate it for three days straight. I highly recommend ordering it. Happy hour had lots of great choices and went until a decent time.

1/2 of the grilledc apple salad

First visit to this restaurant on a beautiful warm spring night. We chose to sit outside. It was lovely until some teenager drove by pretending to shoot at everyone on the sidewalk out the window of his car....VERY disturbing. We ordered the grilled salad to split, the beef short rib ragu and fish n chips. Upset right away because there was no malt vinegar available. The two small, over-cooked fish fillets were not even appetizing and looked like an after thought, not a "special" on a Saturday night. The short ribs were excellent. Wonderful flavor, texture, and creative. You'd never know these two entrees were cooked by the same chef. The salad was one of my favorites Ive had recently. I could have only eaten that and been satisfied. Id come back to try a few other things on the menu like the charcuterie and the whipped feta.

Olive + Oak - Roasted Oysters

I have to be honest with you. I didn't know anything about St. Louis before I visited here for a…read morefew days. I certainly wasn't expecting the food scene to be so excellent. I had my first dinner of my stay at Olive + Oak, and it blew me away from the moment I laid my eyes on it. From the unsuspecting street outside, the giant windows glow with the warm, sparkling light from within. An elegant dining room with a beautiful bar and a good amount of hustle and bustle. I felt like I was at an upscale New Orleans joint. Very cozy. Service was just as beautiful. Our server was extremely nice, new the menu backwards and forwards, and rattled off the nightly specials without hesitation. And on top of all of that, when we were getting some stuff to-go, she threw in more bread for us! You can't train that level of service. That's just a good person. Onto the food. We started off with the Blue Crab Gratin (calabrian chili, celery + pretzel bread). This was ooey, gooey, cheesy, delicious, had a fair amount of crab in it, had a nice little kick, and the sliced, crunchy pretzel bread dippers were exquisite. Something seasonal that isn't on their menu anymore, we ordered an Okonomiyaki, which is a savory Japanese pancake, basically, covered in sauce. Wow, this thing was done well. Very reminiscent of the authentic thing I've had in Japan. Very nice. Another dish that isn't on the menu anymore, the Catfish dish. It was slightly Asian and on top of some sort of risotto rice. I can't remember exactly, but I do remember that it was very well cooked, had a nice char. An eclectic dish that came together very nicely. I also got to try some of the Rabbit Crepe (port wine braised rabbit, blueberry, fennel, arugula + kenny's bleu gouda crepe). Some people might shudder at the idea of eating rabbit. Those people need to grow up. Rabbit is one of the most succulent, delicious meats out there, and in this wonderful flavor combination, in a crepe. This chef is genius. I could have downed two of these things. We finished off the night with the recommended Cloud Cake (vanilla chiffon cake, coconut pastry cream, coconut + whipped cream icing). This thing was de-ca-dent. A nice, thicc sponge, a very coconuty cream, and a whipped icing with lots of coconut pulp in it. So heavenly. Overall, my socks were blown off. Not only does St. Louis have good food, this was a better meal than I had in Nashville and Kansas City. Who would have guessed. I would love to come back.

We shared mussels, the beet salad, the soup flight, and the pot roast. Everything was good and tasted well prepared. The mussel broth was flavorful. The soups were excellent. The pumpkin and pear soup leaned toward a dessert profile but fit the season perfectly. The beet salad was not the typical style. The beets had a crisp texture you do not usually see, but the flavor was good and the goat cheese worked well. The pot roast was also solid with tender meat and plenty of flavor. Dessert was the coconut chocolate pie. It had sliced almonds that added some crunch and the portion was large enough to share. Drinks included the brandy margarita and the elderflower gimlet. Both were fine but the margarita was the standout. The cognac note gave it a deeper flavor. Overall, a pleasant dinner with good food and a cozy setting. I would return. This is the perfect spot to bring pretty much everybody, maybe not vegan, but plenty of options for vegetarians and pescatarians. A crowd pleaser. 4/5 because although it's good and solid. Don't think any dish blew me away. But that prob will not stop us from considering it again.

We even had a visit from a gentleman I presume was the owner (likely Bob, who has been at the helm for decades). He didn't just "check-in"--he saw we needed a few items and personally took care of it. Pro Tips: * Reservations: Don't look for them on OpenTable. They use their own dedicated form on their website, which is simple and efficient. * Wednesday Wine: If you can, visit on a Wednesday. They offer half-priced wine bottles with your meal--a fantastic value for their extensive collection. Cocktails & Drinks The bar program here is excellent, and the bartender was friendly and engaging. * White Negroni (4.5/5): Though they may not have had Suze (the drink wasn't perfectly clear), the bartender absolutely nailed the flavor profile and balance. * Barrel-Finished Manhattan (4.5/5): Their use of an in-house barrel finish makes this classically executed cocktail a real standout--highly recommended for whiskey lovers. * Wine: They have an awesome selection. Definitely ask your server for recommendations! The Food: American Fare with a Global Twist * House Salad (4.5/5): You have to try their house dressing--it's a creamy garlic style that reminds me of the classic Mayfair Hotel dressing. It's incredibly tasty and a true St. Louis staple. * Blackened Grouper (4.5/5): As someone who loves Florida grouper, this hit the mark. Lightly blackened with a fresh mango salsa; vibrant and perfectly executed. * Rainbow Trout (4.25/5): The orange tarragon cream sauce is the star. It was perfectly balanced--enough to enhance the fish and rice without being "soupy." * Pilot House Chicken (4.5/5): A delicious, well-seasoned chicken breast. Savory, juicy, and very well-prepared. * Extras (5/5): They start you with lavash crackers and butter, and the hot, fresh rolls are dangerous. They even finish the night with powdered sugar cookies--a classic Sunset 44 touch. Dessert * S'more Cheesecake & Chocolate Martini (4.5/5): We opted for this beautifully executed, unique dessert. It was yummy on its own, but ordering a Chocolate Martini to accompany it was the perfect move. The Vibe: It definitely skews toward a more mature, quiet crowd.
