This was our annual Valentine dinner with friends. Usually around 12 to 18 of us and this time it was 16. Since we had a large group we called and were able to secure a reservation. We all arrived fairly close together, so we just started filling in seats as we arrived. The had us at the back of the restaurant at a banquet seat with tables and additional seats on the outside. It was a little tight, but we worked it out. The hostess was nice when welcoming us in and getting us going. Our server was Tera, she had our large group plus other tables, so she was doing her best to coordinate. We shared menu's, they had regular menus and special menus for Valentines Day. Tara was great with keeping track of the couples when ordering. I ordered the Butcher Board as an appetizer to share with others. Everyone really enjoyed it, especially the toasted bread. The salami, sausage and Braunschweiger. There was a buffalo chicken terrine that was different but good. Grain mustard aioli and house made pickles rounded out the board. I also ordered a cherry margarita as my first of two drinks. The second one was a Hugo Spritz. Both were ok, not great. I ordered the Tenderloin from the Valentine menu. It came with fingerling potatoes and green beans with a sauce. It was delicious! The beef so tender and flavorful. The meal was superb. To go packaging was great and came in a brown bag with handles that makes it easy to carry. We had a great time, great food and service. read more

On Friday we went to The Block in Webster Groves the first time. We arrived around 7:00 pm and the restaurant was busy. There was a 20-30 minute wait so we found seats at the bar and ordered cocktails. Very good. Very strong. The Block is a great space. Tall ceilings, warm & inviting, perhaps a little low lighting for us challenged folks, but nice, easy to read menus made up for it. A busser brought us water and shortly behind him was Laura-Beth, (our server) with a big smile and menus. After explaining the menu, specials, and taking our drink orders she left us to think about our choices. The menu is a little limited but includes sandwiches as well as entrees including fish option.. Being a "butcher" restaurant we both opted for the ribeye, medium rare. The steak comes only with fries which I ordered while my date went for whipped potatoes. I also went for a side of spinach. We also split a Block Salad as a starter. Choosing to split the Block Salad was a good idea. It was more than enough for two. It was great version of a chopped salad with fresh greens, bacon, smoked ham, egg, house-smoked cheddar, tomatoes, red onion, dressed with just enough buttermilk dressing. Really enjoyed it and just the right amount of salad. Only criticism is not salt and pepper on the table. Probably by design but disappointing. Next came our steaks and sides. We both ordered medium-rare. Her steak was a little under but close enough. My steak was raw in the center. I should have said something but there wasn't so much it was inedible for me. Better under than over! The seasoned fries were good and the whipped potatoes very good were delicious. The fresh spinach was cooked perfect, but under seasoned. All in all, good sides. We finished with Irish Coffee and vanilla ice cream. Kudos to the staff A special thank you to our server Laura-Beth. You were spot on friendly, courteous, attentive, and made our evening great and not just good. Overall, a good place, A bit expensive but where isn't these days. I consider this to be a "sleeper" restaurant. I picked it for its location, not because I'd heard anything about it. But everything about it was top notch. The ambiance is elegant without being uncomfortable. A friend and I came here before attending a play. I ordered the grilled chicken and it was absolutely wonderful! My friend let me nibble on her Butcher Block a bit and that braunschweiger was DIVINE! I have to say, the cinnamon ice cream on the Apple Crisp was SO perfect. The Block salad was amazing!! Generous toppings and a lovely dressing. Highly recommend. Ale and Cheddar dip with homemade pretzel was also very good. The pretzels were piping hot and so delicious. I had the grilled chicken breast over whipped mashed potatoes with fresh green beans. The chicken was well seasoned. The mashed potatoes with a brown gravy were very salty. Wanted something light for dinner so I opted for the block salad which had bacon and ham. Unbeknownst to me that the salad is mostly meats, I added grilled chicken to the salad. In short skip add on for the salad next time. The chicken add on was deliciously flavored but it was tough (overcooked). The rest of my company had the burger and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Sidewalk dining available on nice weather. Three stars for now, till my next visit which I hope will be much better choice on my part - really should have had the burger as this is what they advertise to be their expertise. Everything in Webster Grove is city parking lot as establishments have very limited space around their vicinity, so expect to walk a little. Service was good. read more

I could have very easily only given The Block 3 Stars. This seemed to be a mixed bag of results. The Block on Lockwood in Webster, is owned by Marc Del Pietro and Brian Doherty. Both graduates of The Culinary Institute of America and lots of high end experience. Known as a restaurant & butcher shop, their mission statement is simple. Create and showcase a farm fresh, seasonal menu that sources the very best of local ingredients. They also perform the primary and secondary butchery of the livestock they serve in house which is kind of cool to know. They also have a small display case in the front of the restaurant of fresh cut meats you can prepare at home. All that is a good and well but it all has to best cooked and le related well. The Apple Salad might have been the best thing of everything we ordered. With roasted thin sliced honey crisp apples, spinach and arugula, cranberries, candied pecans and red wine vinaigrette, this was an awesome salad bursting with flavors! We got the grilled sourdough bread with bacon jam. The grilled sourdough came from a local bakery and was grilled to perfection. Sorry to say the signature bacon jam hit you over the head with a very heavy salty glob of I don't know what. Very little bacon taste and too much whatever they seasoned it with. The loaded fries SOUNDED amazing. Can't argue with garlic herb fries, ground ribeye, cheddar, scallions, and Sriracha aioli. In reality it was a jumbled soggy mess that was hard to eat. Way overloaded with cheese. The ground ribeye either was a very cheap cut, they seasoned bad, they didn't care, or who knows what. It just wasn't worth the calories to get it. They need to simplify it. The ribeye was very good. Wasn't the best steak I ever had but was good. Not quite sure it justified the price of almost $50. There are better steaks in St. Louis. The green beans it came with were a little crispy. Some people like them that way, some people like them a little softer. The vanilla pound cake with blood orange curd, and crème faiche sure sounded good. I'm used to something sweeter. The crème faicha tasted like whipped cream without the sugar, or almost like yogurt without sugar. I even said it was more like sour cream. I took it off. The blood orange curd was good but overall, based on the size, the cost and the crème, WAY overrated. The atmosphere was good however a little too dark. Simple, woody, upscale simplicity. I would maybe try it again but like I said, mixed bag. read more

Sat outside on a really nice Saturday night. Good service, check in often and the wait was maybe 20 minutes so not bad. I got steak and dumplings which was delicious, but me and my dad split it with a couple of appetizers (fries: very good; bread and jam I think: okay was expecting more out of it) and has ordered some gnocchi but took it home to the family because we were full off what we already had. Tried some gnocchi before we packed it up and it was very good aswell. Definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

The Block was delightful! My partner and I were food hopping in Webster the other evening and decided to stop in for a bite and a drink. We sat at the bar - tended by the lovely Jill. For our meal there we each had a glass of wine and, by Jill's recommendation, shared the off-the-menu bolognese gnocchi. Y'all!! It was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend using their online waitlist option if you are coming during prime time. Great service by staffs since walking through the door. Very relaxed atmosphere and great for both dinner date and family/friend gathering. Not too loud to have conversations during dinner. High quality and well seasoned steaks. First visit to this restaurant on a beautiful warm spring night. We chose to sit outside. It was lovely until some teenager drove by pretending to shoot at everyone on the sidewalk out the window of his car....VERY disturbing. We ordered the grilled salad to split, the beef short rib ragu and fish n chips. Upset right away because there was no malt vinegar available. The two small, over-cooked fish fillets were not even appetizing and looked like an after thought, not a "special" on a Saturday night. The short ribs were excellent. Wonderful flavor, texture, and creative. You'd never know these two entrees were cooked by the same chef. The salad was one of my favorites Ive had recently. We ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the Beef Tenderloin. Both were outstanding! The pork was not overly sweet and the tenderloin was tender and cooked to perfection. I love the neighborhood that The Block is located in. It is a cute street with some fun dining places like The Block and wine bars. I had the pork and dumplings. This is like a really thick, flavorful, stew with almost no broth. The dumplings are gnocchi. I really enjoyed this and the portion size was very large. Be sure to ask for the specials if this doesn't sound interesting to you as they had a long list with a lot of variety. Of note, we got there early so there was no wait. Mixed feels about the Block. I'll start with the pros. The ambiance is really nice, intimate interior with pretty lighting. Tables were spaced out and staff wore masks. The food was very good. I'm a vegetarian, and was pleased to see multiple menu options for me. My omnivore friends were also happy with the food, especially the bacon mac n cheese. We got an in ice cream sandwich for dessert and that was yummy, great ice cream though I wish I knew where it was from (staff wasn't sure). There was a great drink selection, lots of local beers and unique cocktails with great names. Main con was the wait time. They do not take reservations. We waited 2 hours to be seated. At first the yelp no wait app said 30 mins, then it changed to an hour to 90 mins. We went inside a little after the hour mark and stood for 45 more minutes. There was no waiting area and it was pretty crowded. We noticed a lot of patrons not keeping their masks on while moving about. Staff seemed overwhelmed. The table we had been waiting for had a party who hung out for a long time after they paid. I wish staff would have nicely asked them to wrap it up since there's still a pandemic and there were so many people waiting up front. read more

So this is going to be a weird 5 star review. First, they may have one of the best burgers in town. No joke. Not a smash burger like everyone else is doing, but a legitimate medium rare beauty. Second, they have great salads. Third, everything else i have had is great with the exception of their steak sauce. The thing that I think holds the block back is that it doesn't really accomplish the "butcher" vibe. It seems kind of gimmicky. read more

Had an impromptu dinner last night at The Block in Webster Groves. I was surprised at the lack of customers at 6:00pm but to be fair it was a terribly hot Wednesday evening in St. Louis. The staff was pleasant, the Cabernet Sauvignon was chilled to perfection and the appetizer I choose as my meal was delicious and filling. I had their Flatbread with spicy three cheese, topped with pulled short ribs, peppers & onions, mozzarella and a horseradish cream. Highly recommended!! I will be a repeat customer. I would like to try one of their main Entrees and possibly one of their yummy dessert option. To some the menu may seem limited but in my opinion are some of the best restaurants. read more

We had a weekday dinner recently. The place was maybe 1/4 full. We were seated and ordered drinks quickly. We had one pescatarian with us and was hoping the menu had a couple fish or vegetarian dishes that she could choose from. It didn't so we asked our waiter. He said there was a grilled salmon dish and fish and chips, plus the special was a 12 oz. ribeye (for the meat eaters). We ended up getting the beet salad, Brussels sprouts, flatbread with the bacon jam, fish and chips, grilled salmon, and pork and dumplings. The Brussels sprouts disappeared quickly, they were so delicious! My salmon was terriffic, but had a bit too much salt, as was the fish and chips. The meat eaters also loved the bacon jam. We ordered a couple drinks that were very tasty, too. We'll return, and bring another person who will split the ribeye with me! read more

Things to improve: food, service, ambiance, price. Went here for a casual night out and the bill was ill fitting to the quality, service and ambiance. This place is crying for some art work and additional lighting. The food was incredibly salty I hardly ate my meal. Broccoli was one of the more healthy things on the menu but was mostly all the stalk/stub. Service was slow especially considering the restaurant was not overcrowded. All around disappointed and wish we just went to Mexican or burger champ. read more

Broch side - cold and soggy Greenbean side - soggy Sprouts - hot, but literally no flavor. Steaks - cooked to the correct temperature - DROWNING in steak sauce... no steakhouse does this. Soda comes out - 3 cokes - all flat... we point out to our waitress... mind you this is pointed out before we ordered dinner - multiple times ask for new soda - the machine is out of syrup, but she doesnt know how to change it and the bar tender is busy (mind you this is 530pm - place has 5 tables sat... Short of it - never get soda - AND THEY LEAVE IT ALL ON THE BILL. Come on! read more

Love that they flourished through the pandemic - a testimony to their food, service, ambiance, etc. Bar tender Pat is one of best and when paired with Brian's top notch menu, they are hard to beat. I have only been here once but I look forward to going back once everything calms down. (Covid 19) The food was so good we got a the bread appetizer which had several small kinds of bread to sample. The pretzel bread was definitely our favorite. I had the salmon which was beautifully plated and tasted wonderful. It left me satisfied without being overly full. The Block does not have a large menu. If you visit be sure to listen to the server describe the specials because it is likely that you will order one. We arrived slightly before 6 which is the beginning of the Friday evening crush. We were seated very quickly. Our server arrived quickly to take our drink orders. She presented the specials after she delivered the wine. She was friendly but her verbal delivery was rapid fire! We had not seen each other for a week so we got deeply involved in catch up. As a result we were not ready to order on her 3rd visit so we decided to figure out what we would eat. I've waited table before. I know that management wants tables turned as quickly as possible but that should not be perceived as pressure by the customer. On this occasion it was obvious that our server wanted us to eat and leave so we got the salmon special. The kitchen got the food out in less than 10 minutes and it came to us piping hot. I have never had a braised salmon as good as this was! This chef knows how to prepare fish. We got our check and paid promptly to free up the table. We would have stayed for dessert but we felt pressure to get out the door so we did. We may return but it will not be on a Friday evening. I recommend trying The Block. read more
