Unfortunately, our experience was underwhelming and a bit bothersome. Coming from a restaurant and extensive cooking background, our party was especially looking forward to The Block. We understand the difficulty in the restaurant business and don't often leave negative reviews... however, this was altogether different. Every single entree in our party had to be sent back to the kitchen because it was prepared incorrectly. When the pork chop came back, the meat smelled rotten. During the back and forth, no manager came to our table to discuss whatever was happening in the kitchen. In town recently and came for dinner with three friends - have YOU ever tried to handle a table of four 40-something women, at least one of whom is plastered and has very specific diet requirements? Because our server at The Block sure has, and he did a reasonable job of staying unruffled. I honestly liked the happy hour food at the bar beforehand MORE than my actual meal, but I think I just ordered wrong (pulled short rib flatbread - love the concept but there was just an awful LOT going on with that dish). Sliders were dynamite, pretzels with beer cheese dip another hit, and I even ate Brussels Sprouts (and liked them!) which is SUPER unusual for me. I had a cup of crab and corn chowder to start and that was excellent. Bread pudding for dessert was a bit of a letdown, way too dry. But I tend to be underwhelmed with restaurant desserts in general, and am just as happy to have a frozen mini-Twix later at home. Must remember that next time. The difference between vision and successful presentation can often rely on the ability to execute. Many chefs can-not be operators, and many operators cannot be chefs. At The Block, even the simplest menu items appeared out of the kitchen's reach during a recent Summer visit. Based upon ambiance alone, we chose the sidewalk dining option at this popular stretch of Lockwood Avenue. Our first mistake. The Block Burger @ $15, add bacon @ $2, Kid's Mac & Cheese @ $4 and a house lemonade were logical choices. Server Bre'Anna seemed taxed to provide a smile, but suggested the "Flash Fried Brussels Sprouts" @ $11 as an important order addition. A protracted wait allowed us to notice a growing problem. One which some staff seemed pre-conditioned to tackle, but, alas, they could not. A stark difference from nearby hotspots, this purveyor was not only overrun with flies, but it was clear this was not the first time. Even before we alerted nearby workers, other staff were already spraying adjacent areas of the sidewalk. This was an ominous sign. They. Were. Everywhere. In and of itself, a serious fly problem near a restaurant building usually connotes inner trouble. In a case like this, oftentimes the menu stars can salvage an otherwise uncomfortable experience. While the Kid's Mac & Cheese was entirely delectable, the vastly overrated, and overpriced burgers were...sorely disappointing. Over-seasoned, dry and chewy, the meat patties were awful. It was puzzling. The Block bills itself as a purveyor of showcase meat products. Barely edible Sprouts rounded out a very unimpressive, albeit disastrous trip to the eatery. The BF and I dined here for the 1st time on Sunday. Our server was Peter whom was fantastic!!! He was attentive and gave great recommendations regarding food options. He also was our bartender and mixed up a fabulous cocktail for me. I began with the rum Punch which I didn't care much for but the specialty cocktail he concocted made up for it. I love how simple The Block keeps their menu. We began with The Butcher's Plate, flash fried brussels sprouts, a beef rib and the smoked bacon hash. I highly recommend the Butcher's Plate, Brussels Sprouts and the Beef Ribs. All were extremely delicious!!! I can't even begin to describe the concept and execution put into those dishes. I mean talk about having your mind blown. I've never tasted Brussels Sprouts or Beef Ribs soo perfectly executed, as far as flavor, tenderness and seasoning. We also tried the Short Rib Sandwich which was one of several specials for the day and of course The Block Burger with bacon and egg. The short rib sandwich on the pretzel bun was delicious. I was soo full from our starters I couldn't eat it. The BF took it home for lunch the next day. The burger was ok. It was just missing some added sessoning. I ended the meal with the bread pudding which was lacking the sweetness I enjoy. It also lacked serious flavor. I think it was supposed to be banana foster. The texture was dense and I really couldn't pick up the flavor of the icecream accompanying it. I have to say though overall it was a really good meal and worth a return trip. We were totally blown away with our first visit to The Block. I will say, it is by far the BEST BURGER and Best Mac - n - Cheese in the city. Both of these menu items were totally off the charts. Our lunch started with two salads; Asparagus Salad and Block Salad. I enjoyed a small Asparagus Salad, which was the perfect size to enjoy before a Block Burger. I'm confident that a large would be a meal by itself. Which would be a dream for a vegetarian. It was not only grilled asparagus, but it also had mixed greens, roasted beets, goat cheese (my favorite), toasted walnuts and tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette . The BF enjoyed The Block Salad which was not your typical chef salad. It may sound like it, but when you add their bacon, smoked ham, smoked cheddar to greens, tomato, egg, red onion and toss it with a Buttermilk dressing it becomes a culinary masterpiece. He too, enjoyed the small size. Again, the large would be a perfect meal for someone who is watching their weigh or just wanting a health choice for lunch. Now let's talk about the two items that are taking the #1 position on two of my Yelp list. The Block Burger was a huge 8 oz. grass fed beef, grilled medium and topped with farmhouse white cheddar. It was the most juicy, well seasoned and grilled burger I have had in a long time. I do not know what kind of grass those cows were eating, but it made that burger the best. If that wasn't enough, the Garlic Herbed Fries were the perfect accompaniment with a little cup of ketchup. I had heard so much about their amazing Baked Mac -n - Cheese, that I had to have some. Since we both had salad and entrees, we ordered a small so we could experience a little bit of heaven. It was rich, creamy and baked in a little cast iron casserole dish to give a perfect crunchy top. The table of three next to us, ordered a large portion and it was perfect for sharing. It would of been enough it they had a fourth. Paula Deen may be in need of some comfort food right now and I know what would make her feel better. A healthy portion of the Shrimp & Grits at The Block. Their grits can put a smile on any Southern Belle or Gentleman. Add 4 huge shrimp on top of the cheddar grits and you've got a great lunch. My only negative is that we arrived early for lunch early and as others arrived they clustered them around our table. They had everyone on top of each other. In a large dining room, it made us feel cramped. However, making 7 of my list and a cute water faucet that resembled a old fashion water pump in the men's room gives them a solid 5 Stars. read more

The other reviews have said everything I wanted to say, so far. We came in late in the evening, roughly an hour before close on a Saturday night and it was still packed to the gils. We both got the burger and we were both very pleased. The texture was not like regular meat, it was fall apart in your mouth - brain confusion. My brain could not comprehend that what I was having was indeed a beef burger. It was delicious! Definitively one of the best burgers I have ever had to-date. The burger was evenly cooked as well which is very hard to find. Properly done. Across the board. Fries were a bit too salty for me, but they were not seasoned with just salt. They were kind of garlicky. And I love Garlic! I still ate them! Had a glass of one. Ambiance is definitely unique, butcher / restaurant? Very interesting design and interior decoration. The Block - a pleasant atmosphere, great selection of meats, and a great place to be. Dinner time on a Thursday wasn't as busy, especially when you come in at a fairly early time. The staff were very friendly right from the beginning and they have some outdoor seating as well. I regretfully did not try any of their appetizers but did end up with their Greek salad special for the evening which was loaded with feta cheese and kalamata olives -- tasty! Their drinks come in their own special, sort of homemade looking mugs that I was trying to decide whether or not it was metal (but I left without knowing the truth). For my main dish, I had the Double Star Farms Amish chicken - grilled chicken, roasted butternut squash, Yukon gold potatoes, mushrooms, arugula, and local honey balsamic reduction. The chicken was moist and tender and it tasted like it had been brining for a while before they grilled it. The entire dish had a wonderful, even flavor that beckons for another bite every single time! I got really full before I completely finished my chicken and I had a hard time putting my fork down. Needless to say, I had no room to even hear about their desserts. What great food and what wonderful service! I hope to come back soon and try their other offerings. read more

We had been wanting to try this restaurant for over a year, finally got a date night and the best thing about the restaurant was Becca our waitress, the bottle of wine and the beet salad. Had our waitress not been GREAT I would have left an 1 star review. Everything was way too salty!! We both couldn't even finish our meal because it was just too much salt. On recommendation, we came for our second anniversary. This restaurant is very meat centric in culture. They bill themselves as part locally sourced, part butcher, and part fresh and innovative. While the menu is smart & edgy, by St. Louis standards, it was hit & miss at best. So I will give you: The Good - The Bad & The Ugly. The Good. Once our server realized we had been seated the rest of the evening was impeccable. This included splitting a number of the courses for us to share. Let me be clear from the outset if not for this server this most likely is a one maybe two star review. Our appetizer of Pretzels & Ale Cheese was no more inspiring than the 30 other restaurants in the metro area who serve this. The pretzels were undercooked and the Ale cheese had no flavor of Ale but they were passible. The rustic gnocchi on our Marinated Flank steak turned out to be the highlight of the evening. With the sauce & mushrooms it had a great taste was cooked perfectly al dente. The Bad The second course, The Beat & Apple salad was interesting at best. While our server assured us the beats were freshly roasted they honestly had the same texture & flavor of canned. I'm not sure why but they felt the need to put whole pistachios in the salad. Please crush them into a crumble so they can be more palatable in the salad. Finally, I have no idea what the dressing was besides olive oil, because that was all we tasted. What could have been a smart and interesting, was nothing more than a difficult to eat, poorly executed salad with an oil slick where the dressing should have been. Our flank-steak was ordered medium and came out medium-well. It also had, what I thought was an off flavor until I realized it was the marinade. Let's just say I only at a quarter of the steak. This should have had in my estimation a nice char and a red but warm center. None of this came about. The Bread Pudding dessert was a mushy burnt mess. The top had the char that should have accompanied my steak while the rest was basically mush. It was covered in what I could only guess was that same caramel you get from the plastic bottle sold next to the cheapy ice cream. The coconut cinnamon ice cream was the star of this terrible experience. The UGLY. It was our anniversary so a second dessert was on order, Creme brûlée! Well it was a shallow 1/2 inch of creme with torched, scorched sugar on top. The final touch were two semi circles of what I can only guess were some fibrous onions. Yes, this dessert failed on all accounts only to leave us with a farewell of you guessed it... Dessert Onion! I'm not sure if this was the intention or just the failure of a lazy kitchen staff but it did nothing to bolster my confidence that this was just an off night. Our dinner was perfect! The place was busy last night and luckily we were able to grab the seats at the bar. I had the blood orange old fashion for drink - it was tasty! We also ordered the short ribs for appetizer and it was so delicious. The rib is cooked to the perfect tenderness and well seasoned. it was just about to fall off the bone. For dinner I had the ribeye and my fiancée ordered the salmon. The meals were superb! The salmon is cooked perfect and well balanced with the veggies and the sauce. My steak was also excellent, perfect amount of salt and cooked just how I wanted! Since we are at the bar our server is our bartender and she was so kind and knowledgeable about the food and drinks of the place. It was a plus. I'd rarely ever give 5 stars because it means something...in the same way, getting a zero is tough, but if there was a zero, I would. We come here to support local businesses - not to get bad food and get insulted - which literally & figuratively left a bad taste in our mouths. This was our fourth try, and the last. Brian, apparently the chef and an owner, was tactless and made sure our two families had the five course bad experience... and for extra dessert, didn't even do what he said he would (to replace the meals with a complimentary burger - how petty). Inexplicable. Good thing Twisted Tree - significantly better service and food in the first place - is a better place to be regulars at. If you need details, we were told the specials, wife and I both ordered the NY strip which to our surprise had a sauce that we weren't told about... good steak needs no sauce, and any sauce on steak ruins steak, especially when the taste buds rebel against it. We didn't even complain; just said what we thought when asked (a hint was only taking one bite the whole night). Then a chain of uncomfortable interactions began. BTW, Twisted Tree's kids meal of prime rib, needs no sauce, and will make you wish you brought kids every time so you can use them as an excuse to get it for $7. The steaks were actually cooked the way a steak should be, so if you ever get steak here, make sure you tell them to separate the sauce. The brussels sprouts were too greasy and too burned to consume, but I understand that might be some people's preferences. Ambiance was good (came in late night); romantic even, albeit, way too quite and library voice is needed unless you want others to know your business. read more

After not having been here since pre-pandemic, we had a great experience at the Block with a party of 8, which is about 4 more people that I'd normally prefer to dine with. Our server was Becca, and she handled the large crowd very well. She had a good knowledge of the specials and the menu and pleasantly fielded the sometimes demanding requests of our semi inebriated crowd. I started off with an expertly made Sazerac cocktail. The bar tender knew what she was doing. As a table, for appetizers we ordered the butchers board, Ale cheese and house made pretzels, and Brussel sprouts. We pretty much devoured it all, the highest light being the Ale cheese dip. It was thick and sharp and the pretzels had a soft warm middle and a crusty outside. I ordered the grilled pork chop with sweet potato hash. The chop was tasty with an apple butter and honey glaze. But the best part was the sweet potato hash that had chunks of pork belly in it. The only complaint anyone had with the entrees was the beef rib. It came with two ribs. But one had very little meat on it. Two people ordered the grilled walleye and loved it. My husband and I had dinner tonight with another couple. We didn't have a reservation. It was 8pm. They were busy. We waited for our table for only 15 min. Bartender was great. We were seated and had Becca as our server. I have to say... as a former bar manager, server, bartender, she was fantastic! She recited the very extensive specials, perfectly, was prompt with refilling our drinks, & checked on us often. She didn't seem rushed and had it all together. I was impressed! The pesto flatbread was amazing. The beef rib had a sauce that I could've done without and I would highly suggest salad dressing on the side. But I would definitely come here again! We will be back! My friend is a big steak fan so for his birthday we decided to check out the Block. It has great reviews so we couldn't pass it up. It's a little trendy spot and it was larger than I expected. It was a Tuesday night and it wasn't very busy. We were seated quickly. We started out with the small Mac and cheese and the Brussels sprouts. Both were large portions and the mac and cheese was creamy and delicious. The sprouts were good but I wouldn't get them again if I came back. I had the flat iron steak special that came with horseradish mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly and potatoes had a little kick but was cooled by the cherry tomatoes. My friend had the butcher cut which was a prime rib. The truffle fries were perfect and the house steak sauce was incredible. Even if you don't like sauce on your steak you need to have this. We were too full for dessert but took 2 pork chops home so we can cook them another day. Overall I would recommend this place but you'll be spending at least $100 if you're having drinks, apps and steak. It's worth it, but I'd save this place for special occasions. read more

To me the Block is a great find, and is one of the best all around restaurants. When it comes to food, everything served here has layers of flavors and is prepared to perfection. They have a wide selection of local beers on tap. You should be able to find whatever meets your taste from IPAs to Brown Ales. They also have a great selection of mixed drinks. For starters, our favorite appetizer is the Potted Pig. It is a confit of pork, which would be good on its own, but when you pair it with the sweetness of the apple and raisin chutney, or the flavor of the picked vegetables it elevates the taste of the pork and creates a delicious bite. In addition, I can personally vouch for the Ale and Smoked Cheddar as well. Although I have not tried them the Flatbread, and Butchers Board look fantastic. For mains the Pork Chop, or the Pork Dumplings are great standby's, but I always listen for something new to try as part of the daily specials. Last night my wife got the Pork Dumplings, and I tried the Sockeye Salmon special. I wish I could do justice to the dish in print, but I cannot. The fish was on a bed of vegetables that included, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, kale ... I cannot tell you everything that was in it, but I can tell you the textures and flavors were outstanding. I have never received a meal here that was not top notch. If you want a lighter fare grab a seat on the patio and try some apps or sandwiches (Burgers, Pulled Pork). As far as clientele, I see families with young children, couples celebrating a night out, and larger parties of friends as well. If you are in the area, I would give The Block a try. read more

The Block is a new(ish?) establishment in Webster Groves that has a unique twist - it's a restaurant and butcher shop. And it's gooooooood. We were starved, so what started off as a quick dinner before Sunday night TV started turned into a three-course meal and a bottle of wine. For starters, we had the potted pig appetizer. Pork confit + cranberry and apple chutney + bread + pickled veggies. Oh lord. So good. Our entrees were heavy on the meat (of course). He had the chef's cut beef (which was a ribeye) with garlic herb fries, and I had the pork chop with sweet potato + bacon hash and braised greens. You'd think we'd be stuffed, right? Of course we were. But we couldn't resist the bread pudding. Banana + walnut + chocolate and a little dollop of vanilla ice cream? How can you say no to that? And I just have to add - I had read a few Yelp review before I went and people seemed to be blasting the beer menu, saying it was too short. I actually think it's pretty decent - maybe eight or so of the typical brews (Bud Light, Sam Adams, etc.) and eight or so local breweries. And a lot of people failed to mention that they have a pretty extensive wine list. Maybe the 'bar and butcher' part of the name throws people off to thinking this is more of a pub atmosphere. We visited the Block during that weekend of seemingly endless rain. It feels like Cleveland-Heath, except there's actually draught beer here. Our group of four got a good taste: Drinks: Merlot, Cab, Malbec, and Civil Life Rye Pale Ale (me!) Appetizers: Flash-fried Brussel Sprouts, Potato Skins. Salads: Block Salad, Beet Salad, Pear Salad (me!) Entrees: Amish Chicken, Petit Tenderloin, Rensing's Farm Pork Chop (me!) Dessert: Are you kidding? Too full! Our experience was a little bit on the expensive side of the pricing scale, but worth it to us. And it took time to make all that good food. But, based on a single experience, I imagine that I'd like anything and everything on the menu. Except broccoli. read more

So glad they recently opened for lunch. We got right in at 12:30 with no wait. Service was very friendly and helpful. Based on suggestions on Yelp, I tried the Potted Pork ($8). There is a tray with a glass container full of pork confit, a pile of yellow raisin chutney, about 6 pieces of toast, and some pickled onions, radishes, and cucumbers (pickles), sliced. This was pretty good, and the flavors did go well together. Split among 5 people, I got one toast full of toppings for about $1.67 share. I'm glad I tried it, but it's not something I will get every time. Two of us ordered the Pulled Pork (see picture). The sandwich was a very good size and hot as heck (temperature-wise). I had to flip it over and let it cool off a bit before I could pick it up. Because the bun was soft and the shredded meat, I opted not to try to cut it in half. The sandwich was delicious and filling with a good flavor of BBQ but not overly done and dripping in BBQ sauce. It was just the right amount of flavoring. This came with French Fries and pickled veggies. Definitely worth the $8. Two of us ordered The Block Burger with white cheddar ($10) and bacon (+$1). My friends really seemed to enjoy theirs, and the sandwiches didn't last long on their plates. They also had fries and pickled veggies. My spouse opted for the Grilled Cheese and Ham ($8). He paid the extra $2 to sub the side Berry Salad (which looked very good w/ spinach, strawberries, blue cheese, and pecans) for the fries. He said his sandwich was filling and more ham than cheese. We also tried the Special Drink of the Day. Be careful about specials. This did not mean it was discounted. We had a very tasty and refreshing Sparkling Sangria, which turned out to be $9 when we received our bill. Other specials: The fish of the day was a salmon with a side of risotto. This sounded really good, but it was $20 - a bit more than I wanted to spend for lunch. Maybe next time. They ran out of lunch size cuts of steak, so the steak of the day was dinner sized and started at $28. Very glad I finally got to try this place out. So a vegetarian walks into a meat-centric restaurant... and a four star review ensues? Yep, that's right. I like The Block a lot! Everything I've had here has been good. I've been a handful of times. The only thing I wish they had was one more vegetarian entree on the menu for variety. I love the happy hour here. Great drinks and food specials. My favorites are the fries and the soft pretzels with cheese sauce. Both delicious!! For lunch or dinner, their salads are great. They always have a special salad and it doesn't always include meat, but if so, they can modify it. Their salad dressings are great and ingredients really fresh. Half or whole portions are available for all appetites. Their mac n cheese is a good option but it was missing something to make it a little more flavorful. I loved the cheese on top. They have house made desserts, which are amazing!! Their homemade ice cream is to die for. Really. Don't miss it. Service is always good. I'll be back! read more

I really loved the Block. The ambiance was pretty much non-existent & it was a little chilly but the service & food were on point! They had a great happy hour (literally only one hour) from 9 to 10 but we never felt like they were pushing us out the door. My husband had a local draft & I enjoyed a happy hour martini- it was huge! Their blue cheese stuffed olives were amazing too. We tried the sliders, which change daily. They were ground sausage, pepper pepperjack, house pickles & some sort of aioli. Super yummy. Also, we tried the wings that came dressed with field greens/ jalepeno/ blue cheese garnish. Definitely a win. Now let's just get the bar to stay open later & I'll be a regular. Loved it. read more
