I obviously checked in the last time I came here to have a solo date with myself, but I can't remember a thing about it. I don't even remember the food that just popped up in my memories because apparently, I never finished the review! So let's try this again. First of all, this place has such a dark, romantic, and all-around great vibe. It's the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to sit back, enjoy your drink, and take your time. The staff was doing their best to accommodate everyone and keep things moving in a timely fashion, even though they were pretty busy. When you're single, there's almost always room at the bar, so I squeezed in and ordered a drink I've been partial to lately. The barback had no idea what I was talking about, but no worries. He asked the female bartender, she Googled it, and she made it wonderfully! I forgot to mention that I like my drink served up, martini style, so I ended up having it with ice this time. No big deal because it was still made amazingly and tasted great. And while we're talking about ice, I'm the same way with my water. I like my water COLD, but I do not want ice in it. Then came the $10 burger and fries, and let me tell you, I was NOT expecting what came out. For $10, I assumed I was getting some tiny slider-sized burger, but nope! Out came this BIG ASS burger with a gorgeous pile of fries. I was shocked! And even better, both the burger and fries tasted great. I am so full right now I can hardly breathe!!! Overall, this was another great solo date with myself. The atmosphere was amazing, the staff was accommodating, my drink was delicious, and that $10 burger and fries was an absolute steal. Sometimes taking yourself out is exactly what you need, and this was definitely a date worth repeating. And the best part? Extremely affordable!!!
Great vibe, decent food. Basso is so cool because it's underground! You walk down a big staircase into a dark-lit restaurant with a variety of seating. The bar takes up the most space to the right with the main seating and there's an open kitchen to the left you pass by the restrooms. Gas lanterns line the walls with booths surrounding the bar. Service is prompt and professional. Their menu consists of wood-fired pizzas, pastas, and Mediterranean appetizers. Their happy hour menu features their popular burger and fries and Margherita pizza. We ordered the cocktails Alice a vodka drink and Secret Door a bourbon drink. Food was good but not super memorable. The mixed olives and cannellini dip appetizers weren't the star of the show but enjoyed the beef carpaccio appetizer more. Our table ordered a Mushroom + Truffle pizza with duck egg on it which was unique. Our entrees were probably the best: Lemon Ricotta Ravioli and Ricotta Gnocchi. We'd go back for the vibe and maybe just drinks or during happy hour but will skip having an entire dinner here.
Basso is such a hidden gem! The interior is warm and cozy with dim lighting and its of open flame. They had a fireplace going as well which gave a cozy bonfire feel. Our server was so sweet with giving us suggestions and ensuring we enjoyed all of our food. She checked back frequently and was so fun. We got the truffle fries, bread with dipping oil, and carpaccio to start. All of it was PACKED with flavor. Of the apps, the carpaccio was my fave. It was thinly sliced and the capers gave little bursts of extra flavor in each bite. For our entree, we got the lemon ricotta ravioli and the emo cover band pizza. The ravioli was an INSTANT fave. Super butter, fresh and light. A great place for a date night!

Unsure how much we needed to for a Sunday night. Our server was very knowledgeable and gave us a breakdown of practically everything on the menu (we were as familiar with the place). Her explanations were done well. + I would have liked her to check in on us more. At first bite, and then a little later. She came back to check in when we were practically ready for dessert and determined we needed some condiments for our meals -- they were almost finished. The food looks really good and lacks an element of seasoning. We are big pasta people so we enjoy robust flavors and richness. While it wasn't lacking in richness, we needed something else to tie everything in. My Shrimp pasta was spicy (as we were told) but it seemed like the spice was intended to carry the dish. The shaved Parmesan was a nice touch but lacked again in flavor profile. It might've been an oversight but my noodles were on the harder side most of the time bites. The Papperdelle as the same.. they might be leaning on the nuance and forgetting to bring in more boldness with the flavors. The Lemon ricotta ravioli looks like it's a fan fave so I plan to go back and try that and maybe the spumoni sundae. 10/10 for the tiramisu!
Loved our meal here! We sat at the bar since we got on the Yelp Waitlist a little too late for a table, but the bar service was great. We ordered some glasses of wine, a pasta entree, and a pizza. Ambiance is great for a date night! There's table options and plenty of bar seating. Plus you get to see the kitchen in action from your seat.
First time here and was impressed overall with the cozy dark vibe and espresso martini. The martini was 10 out of 10 a true classic espresso martini. We went with a larger group so we could not be seated at a normal table, we were placed in the lounge area with couches and a coffee table to eat our meal. I was thankful they were able to accommodate our group same day, but it would've been more relaxed and enjoyable if we were actually at a table. The food was underwhelming, we got the gnocchi and pepperoni pizza, our group got the lemon ravioli and the emo cover band pizza and cesar salad. Nobody raved about the food, and according to part of our group who'd be there before, this night was a miss... our server was very nice and dealt with a larger group well, it was just extremely slow so we were able to get in a lot of conversation. Overall, would be back, with smaller group so we could actually enjoy the restaurant vibe.
Went again. It's STILL a five! Service was impeccable. Not so loud because we were in the back, in a booth. Tried new things from the menu, and loved ALL of it.
Basso is always a go-to spot for a nice Italian dinner with that cozy, darker vibe. I usually end up here for my birthday or a friend's, and it never disappoints. The menu has something for everyone, which is great since a lot of my friends can be picky eaters. I highly recommend giving Basso a try at least once. It's consistently a good experience and one of my go-to spots in the city. I also can't forget about the service. For my birthday, we came in a little close to closing, but the staff was super kind and never made us feel rushed. They even helped bring out my cake and cut it up for everyone, which made the night feel extra special. Plus, the photos came out amazing Definitely recommend checking Basso out at least once--it's a safe bet for good food, good vibes, and a great experience.
Have been wanting to come here for forever! Super glad I had the ability to come with a friend who was visiting from out of town. We got drinks, an appetizer, and two pastas! The service wasn't super quick but we were seated right away without a reservation on a Sunday night. Parking was easy to find too in the parking lot. It is in the basement and I'm not sure if they have an elevator. The food was all super good and the drinks were the best part. The dining room was a bit dark though.

I was really excited about Basso and a little let down by our evening. The space is cool, it's like an underground bar located next to the Starbucks , it's a little dark and the flame / candle holder near us was not working and unfortunately making a zapping sound right above us all night Our server was sweet and helpful and the food didn't take too long to come out once we ordered . We had the Carpaccio , truffle fries, lemon ricotta ravioli and Mafalada. The carpaccio was good overall, a little hard to eat how it was presented. Everything else just didn't come out hot. Our fries were cold and kinda tasted stale or old, we asked for hot fries and they brought out more and unfortunately they still didn't taste all that good, I wonder if they make their own fries? Our pasta was also not hot. It was made well, the sauce on both was good. The Mafalda had good flavor and the Ravioli was very lemony, but it was all too luke warm. A disappointing night....
My husband discovered Basso's Happy Hour and couldn't wait to invite a group of friends. The $10 burger and fries is amazingly good. It is made with a higher grade of ground beef and garnished with giardeniera relish, fontina and crispy onions. Highly recommend. Others tried the meatballs and cannelloni dip. Then we decided to order desserts and share them around the table. Tiramisu, cannolis and the vanilla chiffon cake that has a coconut crème layers. Yum! The restaurant is located in the basement. Cozy and low lighting. Gas lanterns light the room. Service was great. We will be back for more of those burgers and fries!
Went for Happy Hour on a Wednesday late afternoon. People were already waiting outside for the opening. The basement setting has an upscale quality to its casual vibe. The menu for happy hour is small. The burger is the attraction for that menu. The other choices are small plates, and some wine, beer and cocktails. Might not want to skip dessert, especially the tiramisu! Was looking forward to a Sangiovese wine choice which was on the website happy hour menu, but not offered once we got there. Place fills up quickly and gets happy and loud.

The service was friendly and helpful by offering wine samples and talking through menu options. The outdoor seating had nice views of west port and perfectly shaded with quiet fans. It was a lovely date night out. read more

Wow, I can't believe it took me this long to eat here! We came at 4:30 on a Friday for happy hour and it was pleasantly busy. I walked right in, but they do have an option to add your name to the wait list. It was very dark, moody, and charming. Candles at each table and scones around! Note: you do have to take stairs to get downstairs where the restaurant is (I don't know if there is an elevator available). I got the burger and fries on the happy hour menu, my friend and I split the cannellini dip! She got the meatballs as her meal. We both enjoyed our food. We both got an espresso martini, and it was delicious. Our server was super nice as well. Everyone was kind and attentive. I would absolutely come back. I'm sure the rest of the food is also incredible! Definitely stop by for your next happy hour. read more

YUUUUM! 1st time here, came for a friend's birthday, and had the best time. We had the cutest & coziest lounge seating, the friendliest server Alec, and all around fantastic food and drink. Very pleased with the drink selection, and even more pleased with the appetizers offered. Delicious bread, roasted veggies, and small plates. The mushrooms on the steak I ordered were phenomenal. read more
Came to Basso on a chilly winter night and the vibes were so cute. I love how I had to go downstairs to get to it! The truffle fries are a must, every bite of it had so much flavor to it. The pepperoni pizza with hot honey was delicious. My friend ordered the Lemon Ricotta ravioli, she says she gets it everytime she comes here, it's her favorite. Our service was speedy and accommodating. If you're someone who gets overstimulated easily, this place might be a little too loud and too dark for you. The seating was a little cramped, I felt really close to the person behind me. The parking was a nightmare the day I went, but this does not take away from my overall experience. I would TOTALLY come back here. Everything was so aesthetic for the perfect date night. Make sure to make a reservation! read more

This location in the basement of the Cheshire Inn is the standout here. The green spiral staircase leading down to their cozy "dungeon" makes it the perfect winter spot. It's dark, warm from the wood-fire oven, and lined with booths around the parameter. The space is open and feels lively, but is never too loud. It's the perfect spot when you want human connection and the buzz summertime often brings, but is harder to obtain in the colder months. Not to mention they have a fantastic happy hour Monday-Friday 4-6 p.m., featuring some of their best dishes at discounted prices. The staff is friendly as well. I've enjoyed many, many, many happy hours there. read more

I decided to come here to celebrate my birthday and it was a great choice. Some people might not like it, but it's very dark very warm and cozy. It has a very different vibe to it and I really liked it. They were able to see my party of 18 which I really appreciate. We really enjoyed our waiter Alec. He was very kind and made me feel special on my birthday. My pepperoni pizza was so good and I love how even though they do woodfired pizzas they don't burn the crust on the pizza. I got a free olive oil cake for my birthday and that was my first time trying it and it was delicious. We will be back for happy hour!! 10/10 Recommendation read more

We went to Basso to celebrate my daughter's 25th bday. They were very accommodating for our large party. We shared the crispy meatballs, calamari and burrata. They were all delicious! For my entree I got the burger - omg it was amazing - juicy and full of flavor. I loved the relish and onion rings on top. The truffle fries were hot and crispy. They have a smaller parking lot and the restaurant is down a flight of steps. It's dark, cozy and intimate. Alec was our gracious server - he is the best! We will definitely be back. It was also recommended to come for Happy Hour 4-6. read more

Basso truly never disappoints. We celebrated 2 birthdays here on a Monday night and were offered the couch area which was intimate and roomy for our party. Definitely recommend asking for this area if you have a group of more than 6 people. We ordered the carpaccio, truffle fries, shishito peppers & mushroom pizza. All SO amazing. Honorable mention is the salads. Huge portions and so tasty and fresh. The service from the waitstaff was very personal & fun. They kept the good vibes going for us and made sure my dirty martinis were never empty. Highly recommend. read more

This place is awesome!!! Angela was our server and took such good care of us and did an excellent wine service! We got the calamari, casa ensalada, and cauliflower to start and it was so fresh and delicious and we ate every last bite! The ambiance was cozy and intimate which made for a great spot for a talk with a good friend! The star of the show was the prosciutto and fig pizza which was a great mix of sweet, salty, and spicy???! AMAZING! I will for sure come back thank you for having us! read more

Second time at Basso and I was even more impressed with the overall business operation. They obviously have strong management. The location is just off Highway 64 and not far from Washington University campus. The easiest identifier is the huge AAMCO sign. Parking is free surface or parking garage connected to another business is also free. The garage is eek, but works. I noticed they had security in the lot. The restaurant is below ground and has an amazing dark lighting atmosphere. It's part fancy with fireplace, part group dining with two tables that seat 20 and part sports bar that's in the center with probably over 20 TV's. It's a beauty. The kitchen is open and you can see the pizza ovens cranking out pies. The overall generates a warm and cozy that's comfortable for dressy or casual occasions. My first visit was two in a booth. Exceptional service and food. This was over seven months ago. The steak was magnificent! My second and recent days ago was a party of 45. This was an impromptu gathering that the staff pulled off for us in the back. 95% of our party was together, others in nearby booths. The service was exceptional. Most ordered drinks, small bites and pizzas. I had a 15 year Old Fashioned which was scrumptious! Also enjoyed lamb balls and truffle fries. Basso is known for a large wine selection which many took advantage of with yummy margarita pizza. They have a cellar. The checkout was shockingly smooth for a large group. That's why the extra star for my review. I will return next time in Saint Louis and recommend. read more
The atmosphere here is so warm and inviting tho certainly not for the physically challenged with a steep staircase leading in. We had a delightfully attentive waitress Amira serve us. The food and drink (Belgian ale Delirium) were delish. Lighting is warm tho a bit dim to see exactly what you're enjoying or ordering. (I realized my Brussels were quite oily the next day when I enjoyed my take home portion.) Overall very pleased. read more

Oh Basso, you have my heart! I met a friend here for Happy Hour and was beyond impressed with the food, service, and drinks. We sat near the fireplace and had the perfect amount of space. We were promptly greeted by our server and were given water while we decided what to get. We decided to take advantage of the happy hour menu, so my friend got a Yuengling and I tried the red sangria. The sangria was pretty good but I felt like I wanted something more. While we both decided on our next drinks, we got an order of crispy meatballs and a margherita pizza. The crispy meatballs came out first and were perfect. I noticed they had a little more breading than usual, which made them difficult to cut. Nevertheless, they were soft on the inside, which is what I was hoping for. They paired great with the dipping sauce. Shortly after we finished the meatballs the pizza arrived. If you're not familiar, they make their pizzas wood-fired, so they all have a nice char; not too burnt but what I'd describe as just right. It's a good size pizza for two people and will def. keep you full. I went with the Alice for my last drink because I wanted a little something sweet and it didn't disappoint. I'd describe it as light and the blackberry was a nice touch. Our server was amazing as she was always around to keep our water cups full and checking to see if there was anything else we needed. We were celebrating some birthdays tonight and this was all of our first time here. Love the ambience, The host was welcoming and the our server Alec was amazing. We sat in the lounge seats because upon making the reservation that was all that was available. It ended up being fine but sitting at a table would've been easier for eating. I got the calamari for an appetizer and basically tried a little of everything. The calamari was good. Was it the best I've ever had no, but was it better than average yes! I was not a fan of the Pappardelle so I ended up with the Mafalda. That was really good. I enjoyed the little lasagna noodles with it. They did charge a large party gratuity but Alec was so personable and attentive that I'm sure he ended up with extra around the table or at least from me. We went to Basso Clayton on a Wednesday night at 5:30 pm. We arrived just in time to order from the happy hour menu. Our server was on top of our orders throughout the evening and she also ensured we did not miss the cut off for the happy hour menu which we truly appreciate. The place had a dark setting with soft lighting. Definitely was not overwhelmingly formal, yet still a place where I can come in jeans or wear a dress and I would not feel out of place at Basso. I plan to bring my husband here for a future date night. read more

Always a great time at Basso! I added us to the waitlist 30 minutes ahead of time which was perfect, as we were seated shortly after arriving. Our waitress Lilly was very sweet and friendly! We asked her if the bar could do mocktails and she asked what we typically like. They ended up bringing us mocktail fruit spritzes which were quite nice! We were there in time for happy hour, so we started off with some happy hour meatballs and Brussels sprouts. Both were tasty! For entrees, we got the ricotta gnocchi and pepperoni pizza. The gnocchi was just okay in my opinion, as it was paired with beef cheek which tasted like pot roast. It was an interesting combo with the gnocchi and I'm not sure I would order it again.
