After living in the area for nearly 20 years, we finally stopped by Sunset 44 while hunting for new dinner spots to visit with friends near Ballwin. It turns out we've been driving past a Kirkwood treasure all this time. This is "upscale-casual" at its finest--professional and refined, but with a neighborhood heart. Service & Logistics The service here is exceptionally polished. From the friendly hosts to our knowledgeable server, everything ran like clockwork. We even had a visit from a gentleman I presume was the owner (likely Bob, who has been at the helm for decades). He didn't just "check-in"--he saw we needed a few items and personally took care of it. Pro Tips: * Reservations: Don't look for them on OpenTable. They use their own dedicated form on their website, which is simple and efficient. * Wednesday Wine: If you can, visit on a Wednesday. They offer half-priced wine bottles with your meal--a fantastic value for their extensive collection. Cocktails & Drinks The bar program here is excellent, and the bartender was friendly and engaging. * White Negroni (4.5/5): Though they may not have had Suze (the drink wasn't perfectly clear), the bartender absolutely nailed the flavor profile and balance. * Barrel-Finished Manhattan (4.5/5): Their use of an in-house barrel finish makes this classically executed cocktail a real standout--highly recommended for whiskey lovers. * Wine: They have an awesome selection. Definitely ask your server for recommendations! The Food: American Fare with a Global Twist * House Salad (4.5/5): You have to try their house dressing--it's a creamy garlic style that reminds me of the classic Mayfair Hotel dressing. It's incredibly tasty and a true St. Louis staple. * Blackened Grouper (4.5/5): As someone who loves Florida grouper, this hit the mark. Lightly blackened with a fresh mango salsa; vibrant and perfectly executed. * Rainbow Trout (4.25/5): The orange tarragon cream sauce is the star. It was perfectly balanced--enough to enhance the fish and rice without being "soupy." * Pilot House Chicken (4.5/5): A delicious, well-seasoned chicken breast. Savory, juicy, and very well-prepared. * Extras (5/5): They start you with lavash crackers and butter, and the hot, fresh rolls are dangerous. They even finish the night with powdered sugar cookies--a classic Sunset 44 touch. Dessert * S'more Cheesecake & Chocolate Martini (4.5/5): We opted for this beautifully executed, unique dessert. It was yummy on its own, but ordering a Chocolate Martini to accompany it was the perfect move. The Vibe: It definitely skews toward a more mature, quiet crowd. We arrived after Mass on Easter Sunday for Lunch. Christine was our waiter and she was very pleasant. She took our drink orders as we arrived in an unusual haphazard order. She took the children's food orders first as the adults examined the menu. I ordered the Pork schnitzel and I was so happy I did when it was delivered! My daughter ordered crab cakes. My son in law got the Filet Mignon medium rare. The schnitzel was served with sweet & sour purple cabbage, a potato pancake, a white sauce, poached egg and marinara sauce! I had an amazing dinner at Sunset 44 Bistro in Kirkwood, Missouri. I ordered their pork chop daily special that came with a 12-oz bone in chop, potatoes, roasted vegetables, and the chop was topped with gorgonzola cheese sauce and a balsamic vinegar reduction on top that tasted wonderful. For a starter I ordered the arancini that is an Italian appetizer that is made with Italian risotto that's balled up, breaded, and deep-fried and comes with a delicious marinara sauce and is great. Sunset 44 Bistro is a beautiful restaurant with excellent service and I can't wait to go back and when I do I'll want to try their sauerbraten, one of my favorite German dishes. read more

It was our monthly night out with our County friends. They chose Sunset 44 Bistro. A quaint little place. Great food with a lot of options. We met Bob at the door. I said" Oh are you the manager"? Boob said " Sort of, Iam the owner". So that is how I met Bob Menendez the owner of Sunset 44. Bob was awesome he showed us to our table. Made sure we were comfortable and then immediately went to set up another table and help a server with a large order getting the food for the table placed in the tight order. A lot of pride in his business and it shows. Thanks Bob!. The food was great I had the pistachio chicken. It was fabulous a blend of sweet creamy sauce not salty but just good mouth feel. I had the house white a good Chardonnay that went well with the chicken. The wine was dry but complimented the dish perfectly. The table bread was a flatbread with a hummus that also paired well together. If you looking for a great meal with great service and an owner who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. I had not eaten here in over 20 years. Very surprised still delicious after being in business for so long sometimes restaurants lose quality overtime, but I cannot say that for this place. I had steak and frites which was absolutely delicious. The steak was tender and had lots of flavor, and the fries were battered and crispy. Other nice touches are the cracker and cheddar spread They give you before your meal as well as the freshly baked cookies at the end. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The owner himself came over at the end of our meal to see how everything was, which was just the icing on the cake. Kudos for this place! I would definitely dine in here again. read more

I've enjoyed holiday meals at Sunset 44 for the last few years but this was my first time trying the regular menu. A friend and I stopped in for an early dinner before a STAGES show and it was delicious. We shared a very decently priced bottle of wine and ordered salads to start. For dinner, I got the Cajun pasta. It was a huge portion and so delicious! I wish the weather was cooler so I could have taken my leftovers! The pacing of the meal would have been fine on another night, but we had to rush to eat our entrees to finish within the 90 min we had to make the show. read more

Came here for a recruitment dinner and the staff was so nice and helpful. The food was pretty good but very rich and tasted a little fuddy duddy but I think people from these parts like that. I'm so glad we finally were able to dine-in on Friday. Last year, when restaurants could not have dine-in services, we took a chance and ordered our holiday dinner from Sunset 44 Bistro and we were blown away by the delicious food we took home! Additionally, the person I spoke to on the phone when placing my order was very pleasant and personable and sometimes, the little things can really make or break the experience. On Friday night, I decided to make reservations here. We were able to get a table for 6PM. Parking was a bit tricky but the parking lots by the building actually has signs stating that apartments and restaurant patrons are authorized to park there. When we got in, we were seated immediately. Our waitress, whose name escapes me at the moment was very attentive and pleasant. We started out with some drinks. I had a glass of cabernet and my husband had a beer. Then we ordered some smoked trout to start. We have had their smoked trout before during another curb-side order occasion and we both enjoyed it. Their lavoush are so crisp and perfect to go with the smoked trout. For my main, I ordered a filet mignon medium rare serviced over mashed potato, green beans and some marchand de vin. It was simply amazing! The filet was 6 oz but I could not eat the entire thing. Maybe because I also saved a little bit of room for dessert? Speaking of dessert, I completed our meal with not one but 2 scoops of their homemade peach ice cream served with some whipped cream, sliced peaches and fresh berries. Yum! I was already impressed with Sunset 44 Bistro before actually being able to dine here but our dine-in visit only solidified my love for this wonderful establishment. I had the wedge salad which was uniquely prepared along with the fillet. A delightful bottle of a Napa cab called quilt, 2019 vintage really complemented the meal. I love this place. My husband and I ordered curbside from here every weekend for our date night during the COVID pandemic. All the meals were prepared with care, there never anything missing--the meals were simply delicious and the meat was tender and the salad was crisp. They offered nice selection of bottled wines with the meals. My husband and I had the valentine dinner menu last year. It was mouth watering and so..so. good! The service is top notch and ambiance is great. I highly recommend this restaurant for birthday events, which we have attended, the selections are well prepared. We attended an Italian wine tasting here recently. The restaurant and bar decor is very traditional and well maintained. We arrived early and ordered a glass of wine while we waited. The bartender made us feel at home. The bar filled up quickly and it was apparent that quite a few customers were regulars. We moved on to the tasting in their event space where we we served a nice selection of Whites, reds and one sparking wine. The wines ranged in price but none were outrageous and the Barolo, while the most expensive was spectacular for less than $50 a bottle. The Pinot Grigio was one on the least expensive but was also quite good. There were plenty of appetizers and they were generally tasty but not spectacular. A really fun event. read more

My wife and I went for Happy Hour; let me first point out that their Bourbon selection is fantastic! And that's almost always how I begin my rating for any establishment. We had several Happy Hour small plates: lavosh with beer cheese, assorted olives, flatbread pizza, and OMG: pork belly on a bed of chickpea purée. All were delicious. I had their house Old Fashioned, prepared with their own Buffalo Trace barrel pick. Again, a superb cocktail and a superb pick. We finished off with a warm chocolate brownie/pie. Again, a really great finale. Kudos to our server, Michelle, who was attentive but not overbearing. And she laughed at my jokes. Outstanding fine dining restaurant that transitioned well to the covid-19 situation. I have ordered several times from them through Postmates® during the lockdown time and the food has always been not only outstanding, from a flavor perspective, but packaged extremely well in individual boxed containers ready for plating. Portions are always decent. I believe this may be the only restaurant in St Louis where one can buy certain specialties such as sauerbraten now that the historic area German restaurants, of which there were quite a few when I was growing up, are now gone. the sauerbraten reminds me of my mother's and grandmother's recipes. This afternoon I picked up a curbside special of corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, lavash and pub cheese (a house specialty appetizer that apparently is served with every dinner), homemade bread and Guinness bread pudding with Jameson hard whiskey caramel sauce. Even though I was late picking it up, it was still fresh hot and delicious. I also bought a 4 bottles of Guinness drought Stout to accompany the dinner. The Guinness bread pudding with Jameson hard whiskey caramel sauce was outstanding. I couldn't even eat it all even after waiting several hours to let the corned beef and cabbage settle. So, about 20 min before 5 friends and I went to the restaurant to celebrate one of the ladies' birthday, I called. When we walked in, they had our table for 6 ready for us. Double Shot Amaretto Sours for drink order and they were great! We were off to a great start. Appetizers : Zucchini Bites & Toasted Ravs (see pics). Excellent in taste. Really enjoyed the sauces they served with the zucchini. Zucchini portion is enough for a table to share. The Ravs were larger than your normal ravs and packed with flavorful meat. There are only 4 Ravs, so order accordingly. Entrees: (see pics) Seared Scallops, Cedar Salmon, Crab Cakes & Grilled Chicken Sandwich. OMG, everything tasted exceptional! We truly enjoyed the entrees. What I loved is that each entree is available in a petit or large portion. The flavors were spot on and well balanced. The sides were very complimentary to the main focus of the plate. I have to say the Sauteed Spinach and the Vanilla Sweet Potatos...oh wow...I could eat a plate of those for dinner several times over. We didn't have room for dessert, however, the restaurant was kind enough to provide the BDay girl with a free dessert, which you don't find too often anymore. They also brought the table 6 mini chocolate chip cookies that were complimentary.. they even tasted good. Picking this restaurant was a last minute rush decision, but we are not disappointed that the evening took us here. Will most definitely be back. Kudos to the chef!! read more

The fish and chips we got tonight was fabulous. It's a very large piece, not oily and cooked perfectly. The slaw was also delish. It was a vinegar based red cabbage. Really good. We also ordered a Mac and cheese with chicken strips. That was good too. Included bread and a small container with house made crackers and cheese. The best fish and chips I've had. Had reservations tonight for Christmas Eve, arrived, were told we could not be seated due to sprinklers that had gone off upstairs. I realize this was not the restaurant's fault but we were treated rudely by the owner, he was only concerned about loss of revenue & rudely told us so. And the house salad.....I don't even know a way to describe that salad that would give it the justice it deserves except to say that their Mayfair dressing is the stuff of dreams!! It is SO good! I was warned this place was for the silver haired crowd, which thanks to my hairdresser I'm not visibly a member. Let's just say , they had me at 1/2 priced bottles of wine on Tuesday and Thursday. Good service, with exceptional specials....Angus US prime strip steak you could cut with a fork. I had the braised short ribs ravioli, which was smothered in a too sweet Marsala sauce. Cajun grilled shrimp for appetizer was served with my salad--cold. Ordered Med-MR ribeye special which came rare. Crab cake dinner was good. When we were finished with dinner, we asked for boxes and more butter for the last of our bread. Waiter came back, boxed our dinners, took the last of the bread---no butter for us, and took the last few drops of my drink. Half-way to the parking lot we realized we forgot our two go-boxes and ran back in. Their response?
