Sunday carbs don't count Checked out @lostlarson yesterday as the first stop in our collab adventures with @cassidyeatscarbs and it was a great first stop while in Andersonville! Pictured were the spinach and feta danish, tebirkes, cinnamon roll, & lingonberry almond mini cake all the baked goods were very delicious and honestly excited to go back and try some more items they have so much to choose from but go early when they open, it was already getting so crowded when we showed up! I came here on a weekday after a late lunch, 30 mins prior to the store closing for the day. Customer service: Good. I was greeted upon arrival. The staff kindly explained the different pastry options along with the ingredients. Atmosphere: cute bakery, may not be ideal for large group settings but ideal to take something to go, study/read, catch up with a friend. The place is clean overall and has nice seating areas for 1-2 ppl. Costs: It is on the higher end as it costs me almost over $18 for a slice of cake + a drink. Princess cake ($9): It is pricey for a slice of cake but well worth it. I have not tasted a cake similar to this one before. It reminds me of a cake from an Asian bakery but has unique flavors with each layer that just melts in your mouth and the last chews of a slice are crunchy with the raspberry preserves filling. Matcha green tea with oatmilk ($5.50 +0.75 for alternative milk options): The matcha green tea with oatmilk was perfect in warmth and paired well with a slice of the princess cake. Came in just after 2pm and there was still a wide selection of pastries and sweets available for purchase! The lingonberry almond cake was to die for!! The jam layer towards the bottom of the cake really elevated the flavors. I had never tried one of these before, but I was thoroughly impressed! If you like almond croissants, you'll love the almond cake. I also tried the cardamom croissant and was disappointed. The pastry was dry and lacking complexity in flavor, but I think it was just an off batch?? Lovely shaded patio out front with about 4-5 tables. It was ok. I'm glad I visited because it satisfied the curiosity I had about this place. That's the only reason I'm glad I visited. As many have already stated, I'm not sure I understand the point of a 15% fee added on at the end of your order. Clearly they need to be paying employees a living wage; however, why not simply increase your prices by the 15% fee you're going to charge? I suspect it's because in general the items they sell seem to me to be WILDLY overpriced. Adding 15% to a $9 quiche would bring it over $10, which might be a hard sell. I chose LL because it was close--I live maybe half a mile away. Pastries were a quick and convenient option since I had to drop my family off at the airport this morning. The pastries they had on offer were not very impressive and some looked downright unappetizing to me. For instance, the cinnamon roll looked nearly burnt, really dry. I know they weren't or they wouldn't have sold them, but they were not for me. I was also disappointed in kouign amann, in how short/flat it was, but my mom had enjoyed one I got for her elsewhere earlier in their visit so I wanted to get her one. I also got myself a chai latte, which was ok but nothing to write home about. I'm glad I tried a cardamom roll, though I didn't care for it. My sister did like the ham and cheese croissant that I got for her, and the broccoli and cheddar quiche I picked up was good (though overpriced, as I mentioned earlier). Overall, I was not a fan. Great Baked Goods, But Way Overpriced This bakery makes really great products -- no complaints about the quality. Most of the items I've tried have been delicious and well-made. However, the pricing is a big issue. Not only are the prices already quite high, but they also automatically add a 20% charge, even if you're just buying a single piece of bread. That feels excessive and unfair. A service charge like that for such a small purchase doesn't make sense. Great taste, but the pricing and added fees make it hard to justify coming back. read more

While the number of baked goods options weren't very impressive for a bakery I found one that fit the bill. When I went to pay I was faced with a large "Free Palestine" sticker prominently adhered to the laptop next to the register. What more can you ask for? Fresh, REAL BUTTER croissants with a cappuccino. We asked if we could have a croissant sandwich with egg and cheese and the GM and staff were so kind to accommodate. And wow, for that not being a traditionally offered item, it was exquisite! The fluffy egg with a tangy white cheese made for a unique experience. We also got a ham and cheese croissant that is just like in France with a bold white cheese and a locally sourced sweet ham. The store front is welcoming and looks like a French cafe. My husband and I came to Lost Larson Bakery after having lunch down the block and wanted dessert. The first thing you notice are the beautiful pastries and treats that are on display. This was a wonderful experience for a pastry lover like me. I've heard many great things about Lost Larson so I was excited to finally try it. They have their daily selection outside to view, tempting you to try everything. I got a few things and we sat outside in their patio, behind the store. they provide a water and cups at the patio, and walk over your pastries for you from the front. the pastries were all super tasty but the only thing i couldn't get behind was the 14% service fee automatically added, and for some reason they charged me an addtional 2.25% tax on top of the 10.25% sales tax. I ended up paying a little over $8 the purchase total in fees and tax. the Kouign Amann was probably one of my favorites - it was better than any I get back at home in Hawaii, and the closest thing I've had to the ones in Rennes, France, where the kouign amann originated from. the Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant was filled with chocolate, hazelnut cream and halzenuts on top. They also have Tebirkes, which I've never seen outside of Denmark. theirs didn't have nearly as much almond cream filling than the ones I've had in europe, but nonetheless was still tasty. The Afternoon Bun was my second favorite - the tea flavor was very strong without being overkill, and the inside was buttery. the Cinnamon Roll was also a croissant-like pastry rather than your traditional ones. the cream cheese frosting on it was surprisingly really good too. Lastly, the smoked salmon toast blew all the smoked salmon dishes i've had out the park. they were generous with the amount of smoked salmon they gave, and the bread that it came on was soft with a nice chewy bite. read more

As noted in my other reviews, I am on a quest to find the best almond croissant in Chicago and Greater Chicago. Lost Larson may be by far the worst almond croissant I've had of late. For starters, their almond croissant is not quite like a croissant at all, and is very dense. It had a strange brawny, almost burned taste. It looked exactly like it tasted. The powdered sugar and dusted almonds couldn't make up for how unappealing this croissant was. It tasted more like hardened bleak bread, than the light, airy, buttery, and finger-licking sweet almond croissants I love. This bakery also was a bit out of the way and a bit over-priced. I cannot comment on their other offerings and doubt I'd want to try them considering how unpleasant my pastry was. I also don't know why this place was recommended (I discovered it through a Reddit thread) or how they've managed to pass this off as an even "decent" almond croissant. -10/10. read more

Divine croissant! Walked by Lost Larson on a visit to Chicago. The front patio and inside tables were full so I knew it had to be good! I walked in and stood in line to get a chocolate croissant and a butter croissant. I also got an iced Japanese green tea drink. The drink was fine but the croissants were divine! We sure to stop in for a pastry and coffee or tea! 5 stars given for the friendly staff who were hustling to get every guest taken care of in a timely manner. read more

Don't order through delivery services. Ordered several items to have brunch delivered. Everything was "out of stock" I guess because the only thing that was delivered was a single cookie. I've never been to a Swedish bakery before, and I really enjoyed it! I would go back for the lingonberry almond cake. I went at 11:30 am on a Saturday and it was packed, lines were to the door and some pastries were already sold out. Grabbed a cardamom bun, a lingonberry almond cake, and a tebirkes (kind of a poppyseed croissant with almond filling). The cardamom bun and the tebirkes were tasty - I'm not the biggest pastry fan, and they were fun to try but I wouldn't get them again. The lingonberry almond cake, though... amazing! I have half a mind to try and buy some lingonberry jam to try and recreate the flavor. Worth visiting for that alone. I'm told they have saffron buns for St. Lucia day in December, and I am very excited to go back for those... and more lingonberry almond cake! read more

Me and a friend went to check it out on a saturday morning, we had to wait a bit to get seating but the line for the food wasn't bad. I adore the baked goods and sandwiches here and the overall atmosphere. The prices are on the high side (I still cannot believe paying $7 for a baguette when an even better one in France is €1 or even $10 for a quiche that is barely larger than the diameter of a muffin, but I still succumb and buy these treats because they are delicious.) Don't miss the kouign amann (I think Lost Larson makes the best kouign amann in Chicago). The cardamom bun is fine, but I think you can get a superior version at the Swedish Museum café a block or two away for much less money. I give service a lower rating because I am tired of enduring the surly attitude of one of their staff members who is usually on the opening shift. She rarely says hi or greets customers in a kind and welcoming way and acts very dismissively whenever I have asked her a question about a menu item. She projects an attitude as though she couldn't care less about working, and she very rarely says thank you or goodbye. In fact, when I was helped by her earlier this week, I said thank you to her after I paid and she just walked away and said nothing in return. I said thank you again, and she said "thanks" but in a tone as though she didn't care. I think she needs to be trained in the definition of hospitality. Kindness goes a long way, and there are plenty of other quality bakeries like PQB or Bad Butter that I would otherwise frequent if service is not warm and welcoming. read more

Pastries are AMAZING, they had samples of the poppyseed bread out and it was so good I got an entire slice. This is not a starbucks to pick up your coffee and run out, but if you want that then go to starbucks I guess. Lost Larson takes their time but the service is so kind and personal you won't even notice the wait. I wouldn't bring my laptop here and bunker down. Loved this bakery, came three days in a row. And only come to this location because the other one just isn't as good, not sure why. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast this morning. The bakery was packed and we found the last table. I order a breve cappuccino and cinnamon roll. For my boyfriend, I order him a cold brew and goat cheese quiche. The barista was nice and friendly. Of course, the drinks and food were good. The bakery shop is cute with nice decorations. Food case display with yummy treats to choose from. Besides the cinnamon roll and goat cheese quiche, the almond and chocolate croissants are my favorites too.
