Small but packs a punch, this bakery serves up delicious pastries at a fairly good size -- but also quite expensive. Despite this, the quality definitely shows in and every bite -- both in the ingredient quality and the texture. The different pastries are also quite different from one another, so you get a nice variety of experiences despite a somewhat limited selection. The seating is limited here, though enough if you're just enjoying your treat quickly and then moving on. I like the seating at the Andersonville location a little better, though this spot seems a little easier to park at. Overall, delicious and pricey -- but worth the premium. read more

I'll be honest. Lost Larson is a coffee shop... BUT COME FOR THE PASTRIES!!! The options were endless and delicious. It was hard to choose just one! I look forward to returning for the Princess Cake! My friend and I enjoyed sharing the Lingonberry Almond cake. It was actually way better than I imagined!!! It was moist and delicious! The interior is a bit small, FYI. There's a couple small tables in the back, and counter seating in the front. Not sure how full it gets! The hype over Lost Larson pastries is legitimate - every crevice is crispy, every danish flaky, every cardamom bun not too sweet. I've been to both locations a combined handful of times and it's been a treat every time. Forewarning, their pastries are a tad bit on the expensive side. The ambiance is v sleek and chic and the service was quick. I ordered a slice of the princess cake and the lingonberry almond cake. The princess cake was a delight! Very moist and the right balance of flavors with each layer. However, I can see how someone could find the marzipan layer to be too sweet. I personally liked it but the marzipan part is definitely very sweet. The lingonberry almond cake was also very moist, with a crisp exterior. I enjoyed it, however, the middle was hollow? Not sure if it's supposed to be like this? The lingonberry + pastry cream part was barely there. Still had a good flavor though. Overall I quite enjoyed both pastries, but I do prefer more inventive flavors. If you're craving a classic pastry done right, LL is worth checking out. Nonetheless, the prices here are pretty steep. I've tried their plain croissant (5/5), chocolate croissant (4/5), broccoli-cheese quiche (5/5), savory danish (5/5), savory scone (5/5), cardamom bun (5/5), cinnamon roll (4/5), kouign-amann (4/5). The pricing is competitive ($5-$10 per item). Items are baked fresh daily with freshly-milled flour (which seems pesticides-free because it hasn't triggered my gluten-sensitivity). Parking is always a bit of a challenge. And as mentioned in my previous review, I wish they had a seating area. read more

Lost Larson is the spot to get your Swedish pastry fix! The attention to detail at this small bakery/cafe is shown through their pastries, which are all top notch. My favorite is the morning bun but closely followed by the cinnamon roll, which is made with croissant dough and topped with frosting. Frosting on a cinnamon roll is typically a nonnegotiable for me. If you haven't had, try their Swedish princess cake, which is layers of delicious pastry cream, jam and cake all encased in a marzipan. Their version is a great take on the classic - a touch fruity and nutty with a light texture. If you want a savory option I'd recommend the quiche. My only wish is that they served my all time favorite sandwich again - the ham and cheese with lingonberry jam! I dream of that sandwich. I always make sure to take friends visiting here for treats as I get them accustomed to living in a walkable city. The Early Grey pastry is by far the most delicious and unique item. I've been wanting to try this bakery for a while, and everything was good, but I think I had higher expectations for the pastries. The morning bun was my favorite, but the cardamom pastry grew on me when I realized it was supposed to be more of a bread, and less of a flaky pastry. Also, the barista was all alone making drinks for a line of customers, and doing a great job, but she, and the store could have benefited from having another barista working with her. Okay, I think I might have just gone on a bad day- but I did not love my experience. I have been to lost larson in andersonville several times and it is always amazing. There are so many beautiful options for pastries and bread and other treats, and everything is delicious. I decided to go to the wicker park location with my sister, around 12pm, and there was almost nothing left at the bakery. Maybe this is what I get for coming at noon? But they still had several more hours until closing so I was kind of surprised. I just felt like it was so different from my experience at the andersonville location. That's not the end of the world, but what really got me was how much it cost. I ordered a slice of cake, a small quiche (It almost felt more like an egg tart), and two lattes, and spent almost $40. I just feel like I spent a lot of money for what I actually got. I think I'm a big fan of lost larson in general, so I'm really hoping it was just an off day. Wow. Lost Larson has been on my radar for awhile, and I regret not visiting sooner! Although I only bought one pastry this time around, the Lingonberry Almond Cake was so exceptional that it singularly deserves 5 stars. It was definitely on the sweeter side, but the super light and moist center perfectly balanced with the tart berries and fluffy almond cream. The coffee was also flavorful and not bitter. I came in for a couple of pastries. The staff was great, but I was the only one in the building at the time. We took home a chocolate hazelnut croissant and a Kouign-amann. Both were good but definitely expensive as hell. The croissant was huge though. And it tasted phenomenal. It was fresh, a thin crispy layer on the outside and very soft on the inside. The kouign-amann was made the same way in texture, but I've never seen say a flattened out kouign-amann. I'm use to them being a little taller in shape, but these were rectangular. Still very tasty though. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit Lost Larson( but wouldn't mind picking up a couple of pastries whenever I'm in the area. read more

We came here because we couldn't get any pastries on our mobile order at Kasama this morning, but I'm glad it worked out that way for us to try a different spot as well. Seems like a cool, trendy spot for some coffee & light breakfast. We were hearing about how they upcharge every order to cover health insurance for their employees. Lots of bold flavor without being too acidic. Strong chocolatey notes with a hint of floral in the aftertaste. Easy to chug but worse it to sip and savor Lingonberry Almond Cake- 5/5, was somehow breaking the laws of physics. The exterior was crispy and sweet with light dusting of powdered sugar laying over an edge of caramelized cake. Once your spoon crosses that exterior, you're greeted by the softest and richest cake with an excellent crumble. I'm a huge sucker for Lost Larson since I used to frequent their location in Andersonville. I got lucky since this one is close enough to visit during lunch. The menus are a little different as they don't seem to have food items aside from pastries. Which no fear, their pasteries and coffee is amazing. I got my ultimate favorite the cardamom bun (it's always a go to). The princess cake is always a traditional treat, and can never go wrong with. I'm always going to say it's amazing but that's since I grew up with it. The only thing that threw me off was that the lingonberry lemonade was so tart. I only say that as typically with lingonberry saft it can be a sweeter taste. The taste buds weren't feeling it, but if you love a more tart taste of a lemonade I highly recommend! I will be definitely taking a trip back soon for more cardamom buns and cinnamon rolls. read more

I came around 8AM after work and there was already a decent amount of people seated at their outdoor patio area. They have a nice display of all their pastries. All their pastries are huge! Also kind of expensive but you are paying for the good quality. There were pastries that I've never heard of so I would love to come back and try some more. I haven't gone to the one in Andersonville and maybe never will because it's far away. But this place has absolutely superb bread. We have gotten a tebirkes, cardamom bun, and almond Croissant (not pictured) and they have all been excellent so it's hard to pick a favorite. Their bread has this unusual pillow like texture that makes it different from your run-of-the-milk croissants, and their breads are perfect balance of sweet without feeling like a dessert or a donut. I am giving Lost Larson 2 stars because of their tipping policy. They automatically added a health insurance charge of 4% (which i'm fine with) and a 15% gratuity charge (which i'm not) without mentioning it. Their food is pricey but good, so that tip can be pretty big. I always a tip, even with takeout, but 15% is excessive. I bought 2 loaves of bread ($8 a piece) and 4 pastries ($9 a piece) and got charged $7.65 in gratuity without being told. I noticed it when I got home and had to call them to remove the charge, which they did. They said there is a little sign in the window. I didn't see it clearly. Most people don't i would imagine as they are staring at the food. I would suggest that if you feel the need to charge gratuity like that, then you should mention that at checkout. Thats a full on service charge. Food is excellent, but the tip thing might make me think about going back. read more

Hubby and I came to Lost Larson on a Friday morning and there was one other couple there. There is a small seating area inside for a few patrons but the shop is fairly small. When we placed our order we were asked if it was for dine-in or takeout. Even though we said take out we were not provided a takeout box/bag until I had asked for one. I don't know how we would have managed to keep the pastries from falling out of their small packaging without the bag. I had the tebirkes (croissant filled with a lightly sweetened almond cream and topped with poppyseeds). The croissant was light and not too buttery. However, there were way too many poppyseeds for my liking. The poppyseeds are bitter and I didn't think they paired well with the taste of the almond filling. Hubby got the chocolate hazelnut croissant. It was flakey and had plenty of filling which was on the sweeter side. Maybe I got the wrong things but I had higher expectations since I have seen Lost Larson popping up on so many trending lists of bakeries to check out in Chicago. read more
