We were excited to check out Loba Pastry + Coffee, and so we stopped by to get a caffeine fix. We ordered: +a Latte with almond milk +a Nectar beverage - a seasonal drink +a Sourdough Muffin +and, an Emmie - an oat-based custard that resembled as French canelé Besides the seasonal Nectar beverage, the coffee was just 'okay', and the pastries were pretty disappointing and forgettable. On the other hand, we absolutely LOVED the handmade mugs, and we're hoping that there could be a restock soon so we could purchases these beauties! The owner, Val, did walk around and introduced herself, which we thought was a nice touch. The place gets super busy and packed, and there is only a handful of counter and table seating - they discourage those who want to use this as a workspace, which makes sense! I finally got to try Loba! We swung through on a rainy morning for coffee and pastries. Loba has been on my want to try list for a while so when I found out we were just down the street, we finally paid them a visit! The outside is pretty unassuming but the interior is so cute! The staff working was so nice I wanted to talk to her all day. I told her this was my first visit and she gave me some recommendations on what to order. We went with the sourdough banana chocolate chip muffin, mole croissant, and emmie. Let me tell you these pastries blew our MIND. I wish we filmed ourselves eating them because our jaws were on the floor over how good everything was. The sourdough banana muffin was probably our favorite. It was moist and fluffy with a crunchy top - so good! The mole croissant: a crazy flavor combination! Sweet at first but then the mole and a hint of spice hits. The emmie was so unique too, the outside is crunchy but the inside super soft and light. It's slightly sweet and oat-y. I finally stopped by this neighborhood coffee shop today and it was lively, there was a steady line of people coming in while we ate there. Pastries were being refilled quickly! I ordered the emmie and a Chipotle scone. The emmie reminded me of a canele, crisp on the outside, soft and chewy inside, which I love. The Chipotle scone was a pleasant surprise and gave a great savory contrast, so I'm glad I got both. They didn't have matcha lattes (my usual go-to), but the friendly service totally made up for it. Even with a long line, the person who took my order was patient and kind, walking me through each item and answering my questions without rushing. The menu is simple and seasonal so it changes often. I got a vanilla latte and a mix of pastries to try. The miso pastry had amazing chewy bread but the sauce was kind of confusing. I love miso but this version tried to be sweet and salty at the same time and didn't totally hit for me. Probably a 3/5. The blueberry sourdough cupcake was better. Tart and unique, 4/5. The elote pastry was so savory and flavorful, 5/5. Also loved the nutty one with icing on top. Sweet 5/5. By the time we left the line was fully out the door. I gave a 4 star mainly because the staff did not make me feel comfortable ordering my food. At first they asked me to go or for here (there were so many people inside at that time), but when I said for here, they asked again with a little sharp tone like, "do you have a table?". This made me feel less satisfied with Loba, even though I thought highly of them. Muffins, breads, things like that are more the specialty based on what I saw, as opposed to desserts. Savory pastries can be hard to find, so I love having another option for that. I have my 13lb wirehaired dog with me inside a dog stroller, and it is zipped closed. He's neither a bite nor a major allergen liability. I figure if I order and do not dine in, then he won't be a problem. I'm standing in line with my dog stroller and an employee snaps "NO DOGS ALLOWED." I assured her that I will order and not dine in. She looks at me as if I've brought in an illegal substance. "Tough. Like I said no dogs allowed." Due to her rudeness, I check in with another employee and assure them the same thing: I'm going to order and leave. Basically, he repeats the same thing and even suggests to leave my dog outside alone. And assumes "I can't have you cut everyone in line to place your order." Sir, that's not what I asked. Um, have you heard of the dog nappings? A few really nice customers offered to watch my puppy, but now there's no way I'm placing an order. I've worked in client service. May I suggest a more reasonable way that this situation could have been addressed: "oh, I'm so sorry. The city is really cracking down on establishments and fining $600 if they find dogs. (I learned this from coffee spot down the street.) What are you interested in ordering? I'll enter it in after the people in front of you. Is there someone who can watch your dog? Wowowowow! Loba came highly recommended by the staff at Ethos Gym next door. After a pretty intense workout at 9am in the morning on a rainy Sunday, all I wanted was some coffee afterwards. This is a pretty legit, basic (in the best way) coffeehouse. You won't find blended surgery concoctions here, or 179 different syrup flavors. This is a tried and true coffee establishment. Order 2 Turkish Delight iced lattes. Amazing. Very cool ingredients (which included pistachio milk) and roses sprinkled on top. We also had 2 muffins. I LOVED the coconut sourdough and my husband loved the banana chocolate. For such a cool place, the baristas were super nice - I was definitely not expecting that! I think that this is either exactly what you are looking for or not at all. This seems to be more of a social space than a work space which should be kept in mind. One is not allowed to use a computer in this shop which is both nice as seats aren't taken up by the same people for all of eternity but also a bit rough because you can't take up a seat for eternity to work in. The atmosphere, I found, was rather loud. The music was particularly loud yet this may not be much of a bother to you if you are looking for a social space. Loba Pastry + Coffee is my favorite coffee shop in Ravenswood. Lilia is the most polite and dearest lady I've ever been helped by at a cafe. She alone made my visit worth it. Aside from the unique flavored pastries to their special names, I really like that Loba doesn't shy away from exploring outside of the classic selection of croissants and pastries. I am always on my toes when I walk into Loba. You never know what new creations are up the baker's sleeve. The Scandinavian space is absolutely a showstopper. I absolutely love every small detail put into the lighting, the books and even the wavy wooden window book shelf. The only downside is the main setting is reserved for dining only, which is understandable given the high foot traffic and smaller space. In response to a harsh review, personally I think all can be more understanding, visit businesses with the right mindset for the right occasion. Laptop use is limited to the bars. My first visit to Loba Pastry was on a Sunday and I ended up on line next to a girl who had been there the day before but was back again because it was so good. She talked highly of the sesame bun which is only available on Saturdays (I will be back on a Saturday) and also seemed to like their coffee. I get it - I loved all the pastries I got at Loba (and I got quite a few) and I will absolutely be back. They are such high quality pastries and so delicious and the only thing keeping me from going more often is a desire to moderate my pastry intake for health reasons. Otherwise, I would be here all the time. I got the sesame emie, fennel twist, black mole croissant, and hot cross buns and that's probably the order of what I liked from best to least. But to be clear, I enjoyed everything and would recommend everything. The sesame emie had a crunch and was so well flavored and absolutely would be something I got again. The worker described it as similar to a French canele. The fennel twist was sweet but not at all overwhelmingly and so delicious. Mole croissant filling was yummy and such a high quality croissant. I have never had a hot cross bun so I guess I can't compare but it was very fun and huge. Honestly I wish I had a better vocabulary to describe how good these pastries are but I do not know the right technical terms. You simply have to go and try them. read more

Finally was in the area and had to make a stop at a place that we had been wanting to check out for a while. The place is very cute, and I adore that they used metal cups for water cups and the whole place was very wood/earthy and had windows. Definitely a small space though so maybe not the best place to study (they might also have a no laptop policy but unsure if I remember that correctly). We ordered a Almendra de La Flor which is a seasonal spring floral almond drink that was great, as well as a burnt brown sugar-esque iced latte that was also good. However the star of this place are the PASTRIES!!! We ordered a miso blondie and a black sesame bun and omg we wanted another. The flavors complimented each other so well and both were savory and sweet (the blondie a bit more savory personally). Both were phenomenal and not flavor I usually enjoy but happy I tried it.
