Sipping Turtle Cafe was truly just a mediocre experience. I visited the coffee shop around 10 am on a Thursday with a friend and there were only 3 other customers inside. The shop is sparsely decorated but seems to be a real staple in the community, which felt special to visit as an outsider. My friend and I both ordered egg and goat cheese bagel sandwiches. I ordered an iced lavender matcha and my friend ordered a cappuccino. The sandwiches were made with boiled eggs, which felt extremely odd. The egg type was not clarified on the menu, but I feel like for a breakfast sandwich to include a boiled egg instead of a traditional fried or scrambled egg, that should be disclosed to customers with some sort of expectations. My friend said the cappuccino was "just like every other cappuccino I've ever had." The lavender matcha really just tasted like a regular matcha. It was good but not much lavender flavor! Our food also took a bit to come out, despite the coffee shop being empty (only one other person already dining when we came in) and what we ordered. It looked like there were only two workers. I personally wouldn't visit Sipping Turtle Cafe again, unfortunately. There are a lot of other great options around that satisfy me more. read more

Atmosphere was so calm and chill, well lit and welcoming and cute. Nice seating and plenty of outlets. The strawberry ice tea was more like strawberry slushie but was really good, not too sweet. The coffee was also very good, has a clean taste despite it being turtle and caramel. Smoked salmon was also good, it was a good mix of flavor and vegetables and not too heavy on the sauces. The ham and cheese sandwich was also good, thick ham, it comes with strawberry jam and mustard. We also liked the beef banh mi, just a little small, but still tasty everything was really good, might be a bit pricy for the size, but it's not bad per item since the portion is smaller, which we were totally fine with. They didn't have some items that day so we had to pick other options. Would definitely come back! read more

This place is really cute inside, there is place to work, think, breathe, enjoy coffee, and overall it wasn't too loud. I got a black coffee and it was good. My partner got a coffee with boba, and the other person with us got a turmeric latte. I also got a bagel breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheese. It was good. I love this place such a cool vibe and some very creative looking dishes. Cool little cafe w/an awesome vibe. I came here w/my wife and ordered a smoked salmon salad & a smoked croissant sandwich w/goat cheese, cucumbers & capers excellent light and a good blend of ingredients. The smoked salmon had sesame seeds & a nice blend of spring greens, avocados, cucumbers & tomatoes. Both of the dishes were very good lite & delicious. I had a really delicious dirty Chai. It was more reminiscent of the taste and texture of cafe de olla which I generally like. The everything bagel was very good though extremely overpriced .The interior gives off diner vibes in the best possible way and overall there's a sense of tranquility in the evening. Tasty food, but the serving sizes were a bit insulting. I ordered a mushroom bao, and they only put two mushrooms on it. The order was also incorrect and about 15 minutes late, but I understand mistakes happen and places get busy. However, I don't quite understand why someone would make a mushroom bao and only put two tiny mushrooms in it. The bahn mi was very tasty, but also smaller in size than I would've expected. This is a nice place for a snack if you're not very hungry. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could, but I'll round up because the food was tasty. read more

I was intrigued by the variety of food options this cafe orders and decided to get the matcha smoothie because it sounded interesting and unique! I ended up tasting like slightly flavored milk and was very thin for a smoothie. I did like the cups though. My girlfriend and I came here today since our normal spot, Loaf Lounge, had a long line and we were in a time crunch so we were willing to try something new in the interest of time. Sipping Turtle had good reviews so we figured it would be a solid spot. What we were treated to can only be described as the most aggressively below average cafe experience I've had in Chicago. I ordered an iced dirty chai (which tasted watered down on the first sip) and a bahn mi, while my girlfriend ordered a lox bagel and an americano. She described her bagel as solid, and her americano as fine, but I couldn't tell her about my meal until she had already finished as that's when my sandwich finally came out. The bahn mi was about half the size of your standard 6-8inch bahn mi with one piece of beef for every inch (was priced like a full bahn mi of course) and while the flavor itself wasn't bad, the lack of love in both sandwiches was overwhelmingly clear. We both found ourselves rearranging our ingredients as they had been prepared either all in one clump in the middle of the sandwich or cut so oddly that the sandwich was constantly falling apart. The bahn mj in particular had these large half sliced cherry tomatoes as well as a healthy amount of sauce which turned my already underwhelming sandwich into a agonizing 10 minute game of "keep the rubbery meat from sliding off the sandwich." The sauce was good but tasted like it had been taken from a better sandwich and slapped on this one to try and single-handedly carry it from the depths of sandwich hell. The final aspect of this 4/10 experience was the vibe of the cafe itself. While the decor looked cute (especially the curved bottom cups), it was overwhelmingly clear the staff here are mistreatedunderpaid. Everyone looked miserable with me, themselves, each other, etc. nobody wanted to be there and I do not blame them. If you're thinking of taking a stop here, I'd recommend you keep looking. read more

Honestly I had such high hopes for this place based on the menu because they had typical American Cafe items like breakfast sandwiches and also Asian offerings like bao, bahn mi, and boba. I got the beef teriyaki bao and the pork belly bao and the beef teriyaki was horrible; super dry and gamey and tendony and chewy. The pork belly was better it at least had a sauce but it still didn't taste very good and the steamed bun on both baos were hard. I didn't finish eating either. The dalgona coffee tasted fine but there was a ton of unblended sugar at the bottom so it was gritty, I can make a better one at home. They still have a lot of other options I want to try and I'm holding out hope that those will be better. I stopped by today as I was waiting to get my car serviced nearby. The cafe itself is lovely with a good amount of seating. I sat by the front windows with the comfy high top chairs. There was also nice ambient background music which was not overly loud or distracting. My drink, however, was awful. I got a "springtime special", the Orange Matcha Dreamsicle. It sounded a little suspicious, but I took a risk, and it was big $8 risk, not including tip. Sadly, it tasted like blended grass. For the future, I would come back but will stick to a more traditional beverage. read more

This place is genuinely adorable; the perfect hangout spot if you are going for vibes, because let's be honest, turtles, plants, and a pastel palette is immaculate. The baristas were also the kindest and absolutely serving with their outfits. You can tell that aesthetics are important here. The food and drink is unfortunately super mid, and as much as I want to recommend this place, unless you are ready to go and get guilt tripped for hanging out without buying anything, this is not the spot. I'm sure word will get out fast on this adorable corner sandwich shop and cafe. What makes it unique are the menu items such as BBQ pork bun bao and boba milk teas. Hard to find boba drinks outside of Chinatown and Argyle Street so very welcomed menu items to see in addition to the more standard American cafe fare. The brown sugar milk tea I had was tasty and served in a mason jar with silver eco-friendly reusable straw. I also had the mango avocado salad which was dressed perfectly and was extra yummy with unexpected fresh mint and sunflower seeds. Seating is comfortably spaced out with a mix of tables, benches and a nice extra long sofa. Free WiFi will undoubtably draw the work from home crowd. The owners were very welcoming making it easy to fully support this local gem. read more

Hair in food? So, what do you do when you find hair in your food? That's what happened to me and I've attached a picture. Stopped in here for a cup of coffee and decided to order a chicken sandwich. This part didn't bother me, but they cook everything in a very small kitchen countertop convection oven. I say that upfront because whatever they are cooking for you is just reheated as if you just made it yourself at home. They brought the coffee and sandwich to me and I found a hair on the plate underneath the sandwich. I know it wasn't mine. When I found it I didn't have time to hang around and have them make another one, so I brought it up to the counter to show it to the woman. She just looked at it an apologized. In most cases they try to remedy the issue by giving something new, offering a credit, or something. Nothing. So, I told myself I would never return. That's my story and review. read more

Went here on a trip to Chicago last week for my daily dose of caffeine. I ordered a Caramel Macchiato, which wasn't throat burning sweet, so I loved that. My boyfriend got a latte with oat milk. We also got a siberian bearclaw out of curiosity. Though it was very sweet, we really enjoyed it! The surrounding area is not exactly pretty or interesting/lively. However, the cafe is so cute! An absolute favorite local coffee shop of mine in Avondale! It's such a cute place to work in or hang out with friends and the staff is always so kind. I've tried a lot from their menu and here are my ratings so far: Cardamom Tea (Hot With a Splash of Milk): 5/5, soothing taste that reminds me of masala chai and it's served in the cutest cup with a lid to keep the drink warm for hours Butterfly Pea Matcha (Iced) and Rose Matcha (Iced): 5/5, part of their spring drink menu! Definitely check it out - personally, I'm such a fan of the fact that their matcha isn't overly sweet like most places (it's very authentic)! We ordered delivery from here on Grubhub today and were blown away. When the cravings for a macchiato hit I knew I had to find one fast. Sipping Turtle Cafe offers a variety of tasty espresso beverages and on top of that they also have a ton of tasty & healthy food too! We ended up getting fruit yogurt parfaits too as a snackie to go with our coffees. I have to say we were blown away by the quality of this cafe. The macchiato was perfect--super creamy, slightly sweet, deep espresso flavor. I really appreciated they added an extra shot of espresso as I requested. Additionally, please checkout the pic of the adorable and tasty yogurt parfait they served us. They even added a drizzle of honey which was a nice touch. Sipping turtle has quickly become my favorite cafe in Avondale. I go there at least twice a week so some might say I have an addiction lol. Though it's easy to become addicted to this place. Their drink selection offers something for everyone and includes a variety of coffee drinks, smoothies, teas and bubble milk teas. Some of my favorites I've tried are the hazelnut miel latte and Vietnamese coffee. Their food menu also offers something for everyone and includes a variety of banh mi sandwiches, bagel sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, steamed buns, soups, salads and pastries. I live off of their lox and cream cheese bagel sandwich and the smoked salmon and goat cheese croissant- so good! On top of their food and drinks being amazing, all of the staff is very kind and it feels like I'm going to see friends when I stop by (shout out to Mateo and Gwen!) They are always accommodating and brighten my day. The cafe is a calming space where you can sit down to get some work done, chat with a friend or simply read a book and you will usually spot a cute dog or two.
