Stopped in to meet a friend. The interior is fine. Nothing crazy to write home about. The food was good. I got a ham and cream cheese turnover that was very flaky. I took home a cinnamon roll that ended up being amazing. I also took home a chocolate croissant that my husband raved about. My iced honey latte was okay. I actually really wanted a matcha, but the nice worker confirmed that they use a matcha powder mix that has sugar in it. I'm very thankful to this worker for his honesty bc that's not something I'd ever want. With how popular matcha's gotten, they really need to do actual real, good matcha powder for matcha lattes if they want to sell matcha. That was disappointing. Okay holy cow. I ordered bakehouse on DoorDash - which was taking a chance! I try to only order from places I've been before so I know what to expect. But on this particular day I chose to try it out. I got a ham egg and cheese on a sesame bagel that was truly fantastic! I was shocked. This review is re: their cake ordering process. I sent the request form on a Thursday morning. Not getting a reply by Monday morning, I decided to pop in as I live in the area. The staff at front took my contact info and told me they'd be in touch. By the time I returned home, a friendly reply was waiting for me, eager to discuss the order. I sent them images (dog, food, band logo, family friendly images), and that was the last I ever heard from them. I did follow up 3 times via email over the next 1.5 weeks, and gave them a call. The front of the house assured me that I would hear back but I never did. In my last email, I asked them to just please let me know if they could do this cake so that I could go elsewhere in time for the birthday party. But still, never a response. I ended up going to Marianos and it was an easy experience with a beautiful cake. I always want to support local mom and pop small businesses and avoid big box stores, but I ran out of time in this situation. To start, this is a quaint, well decorated shops that I could easily see as a great place to meet friends or do some work. For a small cafe, the menu is well laid out with lots of options. The Tres leches was rich but the cake was light and fluffy. The banana pudding was really - a close competitor to Magnolias. This had actual banana pieces as well. This is my second time here. I was a little disappointed with my friend's Strawberry cheesecake. It was crumbled into chunks, not smooth like cheesecake should be. On today's coffee shop tour, we have The Bakehouse. It's located on the corner of Damen & Roscoe and there's plenty of paid street parking given the number of shops and restaurants around. When I stopped in there was no one here, though it was close to 5 pm on a Sunday evening. In addition to the indoor seating, they have several tables outside. They have a lot of drinks on their menu, much of what you'd see in any coffeehouse. They also have a lot of baked goods as you might expect from a place with their name. Prices were really reasonable for both the drinks and desserts. Given the time of day, most of the baked goodies were gone, but they had cookies and many desserts left. In addition to a caramel latte and a passionfruit lemonade, I picked up a piece of chocolate mousse cake and some banana pudding. When my SO tasted the latte he asked if there was pepper or cayenne in it; I wonder if he was primed for it since I've been bringing him coffees with cayenne, peppercorn, or other unusual coffee additives. It was still good though! And my passionfruit lemonade was freaking delicious. I didn't know if I'd like it at all but it was so good and I'd have it again in a heartbeat. When I was heading out the employee was kind enough to come around and open the door for me since I was carrying an occupied car seat, and although I would have gotten out on my own it was much easier with his help. The desserts were good, particularly (in my opinion) the banana cream pudding. The chocolate mousse cake was VERY rich so I'm glad I'd planned on us sharing them both from the start; I wouldn't have been able to finish it on my own. They also had some really cute cakes of which I took photos. Having tasted their sweet treats I'd consider having them make a cake for my daughter's birthday. read more

So incredibly disappointed. They have beautiful custom cakes displayed on their website. Fun fondant creations and one-of-a-kind designs. I've never ordered a cake from them before but their work looked so solid. My son turned 15 today. He is obsessed with Chelsea FC. I really thought I was going to nail this year's cake when I asked The Bakehouse Chicago to make a simple white cake with the Chelsea logo on top. I reached out to them 3.5 weeks before his birthday to place an order. I picked up his cake last night. What I was expecting was something with a little bit of craftsmanship. What I got was a cardboard cutout. There was no time to get a cake elsewhere so I took the cake. But we can't even put candles on it. I added a second star because they did give me a partial refund. But the discount doesn't fix the disappointment I felt when I removed the cardboard piece to sing happy birthday with a completely blank cake. read more

I came here for a few hours to work and enjoy some coffee and snacks. They have delicious looking sweets and baked goods at the front when you walk in, and I was promptly greeted by the staff. The customer service was great, I was served quickly and with kindness, and they seemed to be appropriately staffed for the amount of customers. I appreciated the relaxed and casual atmosphere. They weren't too busy, and even when the dining area was full, it was not loud or chaotic, which made it easy for me to get work done. While the food was good, the drinks unfortunately were not. I enjoyed an egg and cheese everything bagel and a spinach and ricotta turnover, although the turnover could have been heated a bit longer to be warmed all the way through. I was hoping to try the tequeños, but sadly they were out. From their summer drink menu, I ordered the iced coconut latte and the blue matcha lavender latte. The iced coconut latte was a bit lacking in sweetness to my taste, though I could taste the coconut. This may have simply not been the drink for me. The blue matcha lavender latte, however, was especially bad compared to everything else, and I couldn't finish it. The color was light blue but it tasted of neither matcha nor lavender. It was essentially a 12oz blue steamed milk that cost $4 before tax and tip. Overall, this place wasn't bad, but if you're there for the coffee, you might have a better time elsewhere. There is an abundance of cafes and coffee shops in this area that will match the atmosphere and customer service, while serving quality coffee at a similar price. read more

They have milk substitutes and sugar free syrups for drinks which is a big plus as a lot of local places don't have this ( I had a delicious almond milk latte with sugar free vanilla syrup ). In addition to a great coffee selection/ taste, this little place has a good energy and spirit ( I was there during the World Cup game this AM so perhaps it had just a little bit of extra spirit with patrons glued to the screen in there but still get the sense they just have good energy going on there). I really am happy that the Bakehouse has opened in Roscoe Village. The neighborhood really needed a sit down coffee shop besides Starbucks that's open later in the day. The egg was perfectly cooked, the cheese did not conquer the flavor of the whole sandwich, and the everything bagel was toasted to perfection! With the addition of bacon, I savored every bite. Thought I was done?? Oh no, no,no. I also had a small iced caramel latte! Not too much ice so it doesn't get watery. Not too much sugar, where I am gathering clumps at the bottom. This is an ALMOST 5 star spot. The staff is friendly and surprisingly quick. The spot has a really cool and classic coffee shop feel - not overwhelming but welcoming and as if you could spend hours or even all day here. The food is great - the pastries, the breakfast sandwiches, all of it! I love their bagel sandwiches the best, but I have not been disappointed in any of it. The price is even good! The only rough part is the coffee, which is just not tasty. Some of the flavored espresso beverages are fine, but the coffee itself just doesn't taste good. Not sure if it's the beans or brewing method or both, but it really just tastes like the coffee your coworker brewed at 6am that's been in the pot till afternoon. I usually don't have any problem with that, except it's a coffee shop where I'm paying for the coffee. We would have loved to enjoy the simple ambience that at first seemed like a clean calm and friendly environment, but as soon as we entered the door we were, what you could call the opposite of greeted at the door. Instead we were met with a cantankerous man that was either underpaid, overworked, or just plain not a person who should be in customer service.
