Picked up paczkis from here for a work event on paczki day and was impressed by how authentic and fresh everything was! They had a nice variety of baked goods and you can tell they know what they are doing. Didn't love that I had to wait 30 min from my preordered donuts to be boxed up, so definitely plan ahead and plan accordingly! They have a couple tables for eating in, but it's definitely a takeout spot. read more

Took a stroll through Roscoe Village with a friend recently and decided we needed a sweet treat and Rudy's absolutely hit the spot. So many options it was hard to choose, but I settled on a delicious almond pastry. The outside is unassuming but as soon as you walk in you are met with the most incredible smell and cases of treats. Rudy's bakery has been there forever. It is pretty barebones and not sure what's going on as the majority of shelves were empty. The few shelves that were stocked contained delicious looking cookies of varying sizes as well as some good looking donuts. I heard they made delicious challah but didn't see any breads when I walked in. Rudy himself was working behind the counter and let me know they were making challah and it would be ready for pick up about 5 hours later. I returned and bought an absolutely gorgeous and delicious tasting challah for 5$. Best deal in town. Hope this place makes it. Neighborhood gem. Rudy is the sweetest little owner. Next time I'm invited to a party I'm bringing a plate of his chocolate chip cookies and yes, I'm definitely ordering challah from him again. read more

I was here from out of town and walked by this bakery on the street I was staying on. It's very low key, very hole-in-the-wall vibes, but I am so impressed. Rudy opens when he wants to and he's earned it. This place doesn't look like much but it's a gem. I remember going to this place with my grandma 35 years ago when I was a little girl. It's a staple in my life and our family. They make th best pastries and stick to the old world recipes. I live in the suburbs now and I still visit for all holidays, as no place comes close. read more

Years ago I popped into the bakery after breakfast at one of the nearby eateries. At that time, there was room for sitting. You could also enjoy coffee, which was a better option than going to the nearby Starbucks. Fast forward to 2020 and me having a craving for sweets since I'd had none for months. The chocolate frosted twists were not fresh. The chocolate chip cookie was also lacking. The service was attentive, but the products went into the bin when I got home. Rudy the owner is such a sweet heart! I used to live close by but moved around 20 yrs or so ago west near the suburbs. But every time I am in the area or passing by I do stop in for the large butter cookies. They are my favorite! I also love homemade breads as well. This is a old school, delicious bakery with very nice service. I don't need a bakery with thousands of items & who knows how fresh they are. The cookies etc. are always delicious & fresh over here. I don't know what I will do if Rudy's ever closes!! So many great places close now days. I do understand everyone deserves to retire & do not always have family to take over a business. We love popping into our neighborhood bakery and being greeted by Tony's warm eyes and welcoming attitude. There are so many amazing goodies to choose from on a daily basis. Yesterday, we stopped in and asked if Tony could make sticky buns with raisins instead of nuts and he said he would give it a try. Today, we checked in on Tony's experiment and the winner is the sticky bun with raisins warm out of the oven! It was one of the best we've had in the city! The right amount of sweetness and the right amount of stickiness. For those who know Chicago history, he was the head bread baker at Augusta bakery, a bakery supplier to premier restaurants in Chicago. I am in sales, and bring his coffee cakes to my best customers. They are not only delighted with the coffee cakes, they often ask where to find the bakery. One of Rudy's unique specialties is a "cheese pizza" coffee cake made with dollops of sweet cheese embellishing the top, and it can be custom ordered to made with unsalted butter - my favorite version. He was closing in 45 minutes but told me he would wait for me if I was going to arrive later, I was really blown away by how kind it was of him to offer to stay late on Christmas Eve. When I arrived a few minutes after the call, I was greeted with a big smile and delicious bakery smells! Everything looked delectable and truly made with care. The service was lovely, and I especially admired their recommending I try another bakery (which is closer to my home, though they didn't know it) because many employees from a recently closed grand old bakery had moved there. We stumbled along this place as we were checking out Roscoe Village's Oyster Fest. I spotted the Pecan Roll from the window and for $1.55, it was a deal! We picked one up. The pastries here a fairly priced. And this establishment seems to be family run. The man that helped us out was quite nice. The Pecan Roll was just okay. It was a little dense/dry and could have been a little softer/fluffier texture wise. I would have probably picked up some other pastry items but there were little flies or nats flying in the display cases, so I opted not to. I like how this is a mom and pop joint with fair prices. read more
