I had the egg and cheese sandwich. Hot, fresh, tasty... though flavor-wise it was giving "Midwestern safe choice." I stared at the spicy jalapeño version for a solid minute before deciding I enjoy my digestive system too much. Then came the gluten-free cinnamon donut covered in chocolate. Made with potato flour and apparently forged in the depths of pure butter and chaos. Heavy as hell. Delicious as hell. Roughly all the calories I'm allowed for the month. Great little diner-like restaurant hard-by the Northwestern Hospital complex ... in fact, they offer free delivery to all the Northwestern Hospital buildings in the area. They have a nice selection of sandwiches and neat variety of do-nuts. Open late for the dinner set, but most of the business is in the morning ... when the lines can be long. Limited seating inside, and just a bit more outside. On our trip we had the Avocado Sandwich, an old-fashioned buttermilk do-nut, and two OJs ... all very nice. I'd say the do-nut (4 stars) took the prize and it shows that's where they started; the Avocado Sandwich was 3 star good though. Service was excellent with a young perky staff. If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would. The service is great: friendly, cheerful, and helpful. Egg sandwich was tasty - the egg custardy and cheese was melting in your mouth. Donuts were all very good, and there was a nice variety, which I enjoyed picking different flavors. There's also a good variety of vegan and gluten-free flavors. My biggest downside was the chicken sandwich. The chicken was so dry. The flavor was just kinda meh, even though it was a spicy sandwich. We did go there at 1:30pm on a Saturday, so it might have been just an older piece of chicken, as it wasn't super busy. Overall, pretty good option for donuts and cheaper egg sandwiches. This shop is situated at a food court in sky deck building. Service was great and friendly; had a long line but it went through quickly. Donuts: 5/5 Pistachio and baked orange were delicious to each their own but pistachio one was our fav! The texture was dense and packed but my, flavors were so delicious and weren't too sweet. You really can't go wrong with Do-Rite Donuts & Chicken! No matter what location I visit the donuts are always consistently delicious. This was my first time visiting this location and the service at this location is top tier. During my visit The manager was actively training someone on the cash register so service was a little slow but both of the women were very friendly. I loved that they took a few minutes to chat with everyone and make us all smile. During this visit I decided the try the breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was much larger than I expected. I ordered the turkey sausage and egg sandwich. Overall, the sandwich was tasty and I easily got two meals from the sandwich. The inside of the donut shop is a little tight. They have a ton of seating inside but they have a row of stools right next to the cash register. When the line got long there wasn't a lot of space to move away from the cash register without feeling like you had to push into the people sitting down eating their food. We had to try the cake like and old fashioned donuts since the yeast style are our least favorite. The service here was so nice which is the main reason this place gets 4 stars. I got their Boston cream (3/5), apple fritter (3/5), old fashioned (4/5), and the sweet & spicy crispy chicken sandwich (2.5/5). The Boston cream wasn't sweet at all. The chocolate glaze on top was good but I couldn't really taste the custard. The old fashioned was solid but didn't really stand out to me. The chicken sandwich wasn't crispy unfortunately and was probably just sitting out for a while getting soggy. The flavor was fine but I wouldn't consider this to be sweet or spicy. VooDoo Donuts is nearby, but I feel like this place has more of an old-time vibe while still offering donuts with innovative flavor combinations. it is not about the gimmick, but about the quality. Especially considering the price ($21 after tax with a dollar up charge for the maple bacon), I'm not impressed. I am absolutely in love with this place! My boyfriend found this place on the gluten free restaurants list, so we had to try it. This location was right down the street from our hotel. The first donut I tried was plain with white icing. It was thick and The dough was so soft and moist. The icing and sprinkles were great. It did not taste gluten free at all. It was so good the next day I had to stop by to try the other 2 flavors. All three flavors were great. The staff was super friendly. I recommend this spot to any gluten free eaters. The variety and deliciousness of all their donuts is superb, and for those not into sweets, they have a variety of breakfast and chicken sandwiches. You can always count on prompt service and a recommendation on best donuts to try, though our defaults are the sprinkle and pistachio donuts. Sadly, the last stop on the donut tour downtown Chicago. Had a lovely time. I have been to this Do-rite and it's a small busy location next to Northwestern. If you are looking for extras like a breakfast sandwich, chicken sandwich with sides, gluten free or vegan donuts come here. I had the blueberry crumb donut which was good. So I bite in, chicken felt a bit dry, sauce was regular chicken sandwich sauce nothing phenomenal but I liked the flavor od fried chicken breading. I happened to have pickles and sliced onions in my cooler so added them in and now I was having a great chicken sandwich. Pickles brought dry fried chicken meat back to life! Perhaps I'm missing something here...or more accurately, my group ordered the wrong items, but I found Chicago's much ballyhooed Do-Rite Donuts and Chicken to be just "okay." We only ordered the donuts and not the chicken sandwich, so perhaps my review is not the most inclusive of the menu. But just based on the donuts...meh. We got there around 11am, so admittedly it was after the morning rush, but not so far after that the donuts should've been dare I say, "stale" - because that's just that's what they tasted like. We orded: * Maple Bacon: TBH, I'm ready for the Maple Bacon fad to be over. I'm all for the salty and sweet flavor combo, but the glaze on Do-Rite's version was overly thick and crumbled off with each bite. This effect ususally occurs when the donuts have been sitting around for a while. There was a good amount of salty nicely cured bacon, so bonus points there. * Choco Cake (or old fashioned) - Dry, dry, dry. To be fair, this type of donut is usually accompanied by coffee ( which we did not do), so maybe this threw the experience off? Chocolate flavor was on the heavy handed and tasted overly "artifical" * Boston Creme - this is my ALL TIME favorite donut, and I don't eat it often since it is a sugar and calorie bomb. So when I get one, it better be damn good. Sadly, this version was not. The vanilla flavored custard was too thick and didn't have that creamy consistency which lends to oozing out of the center after a bite. And again, the exterior donut shell tasted dry. Sitting outside was preferrable to the shoe-boxed dining room. There was a nice fall display replete with pumpkins. Next time I'm back in Chicago, I'll get a chicken sandwich and have to update to see if that portion of the menu is a good as Chicagoans rave about. read more

At first I thought my expectations were too high for this place but then my daughter blurted out "this is not even good." Big sigh but she is right. No idea how this place has such high reviews. Average at best but then I'm from L.A. so we have a lot of options. Ordered the chicken strips and fries as well as an old fashioned and sprinkles. The chicken was truly fried but absolutely no seasoning. The fries were super average and soggy. I was at the hotel next door so it's not like I didn't eat it right away. My first time and night in Chicago. We are staying at a nearby hotel on the corner, and after getting all checked in from a long flight from the PNW, we decided to take a stroll around and find something quick and easy. Don't know nothing about Do-Rites, but one can't go wrong with some chicken sandwiches. But before I go any further, I gotta say, today was a trip! Not only a business flight, travel from the airport, getting into our rooms, then once we left the hotel to find something quick grub and local flair- there were hundreds of folks standing out on the sidewalks, all with these 3D solar eclipse glasses staring into the now darkened sky. So cool being able to see and experience this with complete random strangers. Ok... back to the food. I ordered an Original Crispy Chicken and Hot n Spicy chicken sandwich, with an order of a 5 piece Chicken Tenders. I thought about a for dessert, but already knew I ordered too much as it is. Anyway, the chicken sandwiches were tasty. Not anything mind blowing or extravagant, but good. For whatever reason, it did take awhile to get our orders, and they do not offer a lot of seating area, so we waited along the wall in front of the square cutout where they placed their completed orders. Because it didn't offer a lot of sit down dining, we decided to take the food back to our rooms. I was only able to eat the Tenders and the original sandwich. Ended saving the spicy for another day. Always in the hunt for the best fritter, we come over here to check out Do-Rite. Friendly staff and a nice variety of doughnuts to choose from. We got the fritter and chocolate old fashioned to enjoy on one of the outside tables. Based on my personal preference, the fritter was too chewy for me. The cinnamon flavor comes through and the bits of apple are great. Hubby was okay with his old fashioned. The doughnut itself is really light and the chocolate thick. It was just too thick for him. Always a good experience here. We come for breakfast sandwiches, donuts and coffee. A breakfast sandwich is $5.99 on a brioche bun with bacon, chicken sausage or avocado options that come with egg and Tillamook cheese. They have great iced coffee options like a Havana Iced Latte ($5.25 for a large) which is sweet and delicious. They are already pre-made so it is super fast. Regular coffee is $1 with the purchase of a donut. There are always so many flavors of donuts to choose from and they keep making them throughout the day. Prices aren't bad as well, around $2.95-$4. This is an interesting place that's great for an occasional unhealthy food grab. The latter reference is not a criticism because it is what it is. They don't try to hide it. They primarily offer donuts and fried chicken. It's right in the name. So if you have any sort of scruples at all about your health, you probably should not make a frequent habit of coming here. However, as Windy City visitors, that was not an issue for us. A one-time treat is always in order. The location for this establishment is in a rather nice part of the loop in one of my favorite districts, Streeterville. It is a little quieter and laid-back compared to much of the rest of the loop. The particular place in which this restaurant is situated is also interesting as it clearly takes advantage of being near several businesses, including the Hospital (a little ironic). It is tucked into a large building elevated a half story from the sidewalk with a concrete platform deck in front. The shop is very cozy with limited seating inside, but there is additional seating on the deck. The gentleman taking our order at the counter did a great job. He was very polite and helpful. The menu is fairly straightforward. The donut selection is tempting and we got a couple of them to share for later. We got chicken strips for my wife to share with our grandson. These were reportedly quite tasty. I chose the BBQ Chicken Sandwich, which was very good. The coffee was also quite good. The prices were definitely agreeable. The three of us (two adults and one child) were able to eat for less than $30. It was a great value for a treat. We would try this place again on our next visit to Chicago. read more

I'll try the chocolate and buttermilk old fashioneds next, but I'm sure they'll be great too. Idk if anything can top that pistachio though. The rest of a great donut shop is how they pull off your standard glazed, and this one passed the test with flying colors.
