    Classic glazed donuts
    Adeola O.

I decided to give old-fashioned donuts, another try. They had their famous classic glazed donuts! I got a dozen this time. They were so good. Every bite was like biting into a sweet cloud. Perfectly cooked perfectly glazed it was great. Ambience is still the same old-fashioned. Their service was nice. Jessica was a joy. I definitely came on the right day!

Awesome Everytime I visit. Donuts like no other classic favor that is hard to find. Did I mention that they have terrific Double Cheeseburgers too!!! Take it from me I am a Barber in the neighborhood I come all the time.

Takes credit card. Adds service charge. The 85yo owner and baker was still in the window working when I came. Waved hello to him Apple fritter ($4.55) add 50 cents for crushed pecans.- this was so good when warm. Perfect amount of warmth. I would come back to get this. Glazed donut ($1.45)- very fluffy, not too doughy, sweet enough from the glaze Strawberry jelly filled donut- wasn't very good because the dough was not fluffy and there was very little jelly This is a part of town I would only come during daylight hours. Don't come at night.

This donut spot is in my top 3 list of donut shops in Chicago. Family members and friends have bought them. After 30 years of being in Chicago, I went to the location to purchase some myself. Talk about being blown away. Getting them hot is like no other feeling. I am not big into donuts that have a lot of frosting or way too much in the way of toppings. Old Fashioned Donuts shine in simplicity. You can taste fresh donuts that aren't hiding under a piling of frosting. And the prices only add to addiction. I bought some cake donut holes for a flight I was taking. I also bought an apple fritter that I froze for having when I returned. The donut holes were just right and the fritter was the size of a dinner plate.

I just ate the best apple fritter I've ever had. Here's half of it...for obvious reasons. I traveled 1.5 hours to get it and don't regret it

I hadn't been here in yearssss but I still remembered the yummy deliciousness of these neighborhood stable donuts. I guess they want to focus on a great product and not the ambiance because it hasn't been remodeled since I was here last. The taste hasn't changed. Still the best donuts on the South Side of Chicago!

This place is definitely a hole in the wall kicking out straightttttttttt heat! It's been around for 50 plus years. I came into today and can see why Yelp has voted this place the best donut shop in Illinois!!!!! It was a line that moved fast. I ordered 6 donuts...all glazed! That yeasted glazed melted in my mouth! The bestttt donut I have EVER had in my life!! Simply AMAZING! Mr. B, the 85 year old owner was back there working hard today like every other day! I am kinda mad I know about this decadent donut shop because now I want to eat one everyday! Pleaseeeeee take the drive....dont be scarrrreddd! **this place also sells cheeseburgers, pizza puffs, polishes etc but I didn't try it out! Maybe next time. Also breakfast is served on Saturday.

    Duchess, of course.

Someone please call Nine One One!!! These donuts are Poisooooooooon! Poison! Ok, maybe not poisonous, but these donuts are CRAZY ahhmazing! They must be bad because they taste So. Incredibly. Good. If you seek to discover thee very best donuts in Chicago, then make your way to 112th & Michigan. Do not pass go. Nestled between other businesses you might miss the show. Upon entering you are met with bakery theatre, where you can see the performance through the window. Vintage menu boards and short bar stools, reminiscent of yesteryear are front and center. And, I'm telling you - you won't find better donuts. The plain glazed is the epitome of seduction. Its soft pillowy goodness melts in your mouth, leaving behind trails of tantalizing flakes of glaze. The apple fritter demands attention due to it's heft. It is immensely luscious, filled with small chunks of delicate apples, spices, hints of vanilla, glazed and fried to absolute perfection. This delectable bakery has been dispensing, deliciousness for 5 decades on Chicago's South Side; creating a nostalgic, devoted following of people who appreciate their hard work.

Good God Almighty! I am not a big fan of a lot of sweets and desserts. I do eat the on occasion but there has to be a compelling reason to do so. This place makes me drive all the way to the Southside to get these mofos and that right there is why they are getting five stars. I grew up with this shop as I went to high school at Willibrord Catholic back in the day. There was a weekly ritual were I would go to Taurus to get a $1 hoagy and to Old Fashioned to get a Texas size glazed donut, every Wednesday until I graduated from high school. When I was in various school clubs, we would buy donuts from here and sell them at a marked up price....no one ever complained, and we made money for the clubs. Buying these donuts by the dozen can be dangerous as there are none left over by the end of the day. I am telling you, the drive to this shop is worth it. And I am telling you; I get high on these donuts. The glazed ones are like biting into a cloud, so so soft and delicious. And the cake donuts are just as great. And don't get me started on those GD apple fritters! Man slap a piece of bacon on one of those, pour yourself some bubbles and you have a heavenly meal. I know there are those that like these new fangled infused concoctions, with their fancy ingredients, and they are good. But give me a good Old Fashioned donut every time. Keep it simple and delicious. Thank goodness I don't have diabetes because I would be in trouble with this joint.

No words to say, just try it out. Quick, and respectful service. Donuts are tasty and are better than other places.

These donuts are some of the best in the city. I visited on Saturday morning around 930am, and there was a line, but it moved quickly. In and out in under 20 minutes. The 2 ladies working at the front know what they are doing. The donuts are soft and fluffy and melt in your mouth. I can understand why this establishment has been in business for such a long time.

Ripping into the apple fritter - look at those apple chunks!

Ask the Community - Old Fashioned Donuts

Just watched this on Chicago's Best looks great especially the apple fritter , but is it really 12$ they showed a pic of the menu board?

No, they aren't $12 each... they're somewhere around $3-4, I think.Perhaps you're seeing the part of the menu where they list the price for a dozen donuts?

    Do they deliver?

No, carry outs only but you can call your order in so you don't have to wait.

We went here on a Thursday at ~11am and waited about 20 minutes to get dine-in seating. The staff members were all very welcoming, despite the amount of people they had to serve. If you are dining in, you must order all of your items in the front before being seated. Be sure to order everything you want, because the pastries might be gone by the time you want to take any to-go! The food was immaculate. The breakfast sandwich tasted like home, and the egg just melted right inside our mouths. The Ube and Coconut "Ensaymada" was another favorite. My partner and I enjoyed every single bite of it, and regretted that we did not get a second one! We weren't too much of a fan for the Black Truffle Croissant, but maybe because we aren't totally into the cheese-inside-croissant type of food. Though, it is a popular pastry, so definitely worth the try! Oh, Hot Yam! was another fan favorite (and honestly ours too) for drinks. The latte was not too sweet, and you could still taste the ube essence with hints of espresso Seating wise, there were limited booth-type of seats. We sat at the bar, but the limited seating explains why there is always a line. Very cute restaurant, and def aesthetically pleasing. We will definitely visit again, and maybe even try the tasting menu for dinner!

This is a fast casual spot so service was pretty fast. There is a decent amount of seating, most of which was surprisingly taken around 11am on a Thursday. For starters, they no longer have their rainbow cake! I was surprised to hear that considering how popular it's supposed to be. We got both banana lattes which were extremely sweet. It's basically dessert with a hint or caffeine. I'm a big fan of banana, so I actually liked this but I would've preferred half the sweetness. The Turkey Bacon & Egg Croissant was so good! A solid breakfast sandwich - the eggs were cooked perfectly, the turkey bacon was insanely crispy, and that sambal aioli was just what this needed. I highly recommend adding Avocado like I did for some freshness & creaminess since it's a heavy sandwich as is. The Cinnamon Roll was soft, moist, and not overly sweet. Overall, I really enjoyed this breakfast!

I finally had the time to sit down and share my full review, and I'm genuinely excited to talk…read moreabout our ongoing experience with Magnolia Bakery in Chicago. Our relationship with this place goes back several years, and at this point, visiting it has practically become a tradition for us, one that we look forward to every time we find ourselves in the city. Our love affair with Magnolia Bakery began the moment we tasted their famous banana pudding for the very first time. It's difficult to put into words just how unexpectedly delightful that first experience was. We'd heard great things about the bakery, of course, but nothing prepared us for how rich, comforting, and beautifully layered that pudding would be. It's the kind of dessert that immediately pulls you in, creamy, flavorful, nostalgic, and yet elevated in a way that keeps you thinking about it long after the last spoonful. From that point forward, Magnolia Bakery became an essential destination on every Chicago trip, almost like a ritual that we simply cannot skip. Our fondness for this place has grown so much that it has actually begun influencing our hotel choices. Whenever we plan a stay in Chicago, we deliberately look for accommodations that place us within convenient walking distance of the bakery. The surrounding area offers plenty of shopping and sightseeing opportunities, which makes staying nearby even more appealing. It's incredibly convenient to spend a morning or afternoon wandering around the neighborhood and then find ourselves naturally gravitating toward Magnolia Bakery for a delicious break. One of the things I appreciate most about this location is what you see the moment you step inside. The bakery has an open, inviting setup that allows customers to look directly into the baking area. For me, this is such a meaningful detail. Seeing the bakers at work, mixing, assembling, crafting everything by hand, reinforces the authenticity of the entire experience. It gives me confidence in the quality and freshness of what we're eating, and it creates a sense of connection to the craftsmanship behind every cake, pudding, and pastry. You can tell that things here are genuinely made from scratch, and that alone sets the tone for how special this place feels. The ambiance of the bakery is another reason we keep coming back. As a family, we love spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, and Magnolia Bakery hits all of those marks. The interior décor has a charming, almost nostalgic aesthetic that creates a comforting mood the moment you walk in. Beyond that, there are several seating options available inside, which is perfect for us. After spending hours walking around the city, shopping, or sightseeing, being able to sit down, relax, and enjoy our treats becomes a much‑needed part of the day. Whether we're sharing different desserts, reviewing our shopping finds, or simply resting our feet, the space adds to the joy of the visit. The service style here is pretty straightforward, and honestly, that's something I genuinely appreciate. It's a typical bakery setup: you line up, scan through the display case filled with cakes, pastries, puddings, and seasonal items, make your selections, and pay right away. The simplicity of the process makes everything move smoothly. There's no rush, but there's also no confusion, just an easy, clean system that gets you from craving to enjoying your dessert in a matter of minutes. Although the line can sometimes get long, especially during peak hours or weekends, we have been lucky in that our visits almost always fall on weekdays. Because of that timing, we rarely encounter significant wait times. Even when the line does look a little long, it tends to move at a reasonable pace because of how efficiently the staff works. And honestly, even if we did have to wait, the smell of freshly baked goods and the anticipation of that first bite make the wait feel more than worth it. Overall, Magnolia Bakery has become one of those places that holds a special place in our hearts. It's not just about the banana pudding, though that will always be the star, it's about the atmosphere, the quality, the consistency, and the memories we associate with every visit. Each experience there adds something new to our affection for the place, which is why we continue returning again and again. We absolutely love this bakery, and we recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone visiting Chicago. Whether you're a dessert enthusiast, a banana pudding lover, or simply someone looking for a delightful spot to relax and treat yourself, Magnolia Bakery is an experience you shouldn't miss.
