I tried D&D donuts, Doughnut vault, Dat Donut...but how did I miss Old Fashioned Donuts?! During my donut adventure in 2021, I claimed that D&D Donuts were the best donuts Ive ever had...and nothing, not even fancy NYC donuts were comparable. HOWEVER, Old Fashioned Donuts has made D&D Donuts share their podium as the #1 donut I've had in Chicago (or...pretty much any other city!) The shop is a drive from downtown Chicago but totally totally worth it. At first glance, it seems underwhelming...the posters and signs on the walls are turning a bit yellow because of how long they've been put up for, the seat cushions are cracked... but oh man the smells! the free smells of the donuts that dance around the whole block are enough to draw anyone into the shop. I got the blueberry glazed old fashioned, yeast glazed, and banana nut donut. All were absolutely spectacular! I could taste the freshness of the donut from the way it melted in my mouth. Each bite of donut was swimming in sweet sticky glaze - they really mastered the perfect donut:glaze ratio! The banana nut donut had a hints of caramelized nut flavor. The yeast donut was soo soo fluffy but also soo soo melty.... I must confess...I gobbled all 4 donuts in less than 15 minutes... all self restraint went out the window from the first bite. I will definitely definitely be returning! The only thing to keep in mind is that this place is cash only! so bring lots of cash!! Also i have no idea how they calculate the total because the girl that helped me didnt punch my order into the calculator or cash register and seemed to do the math "in her head"...I did the math for my total and I paid like like ~1.5 extra but its fine. Gosh, I can't believe that in all these years I've never reviewed OFD. I learned about them on the LTHForum, and on those occasions when I'm heading somewhere in this direction, try to make a stop here. Let's get right to it: The reason you stop here, or make a trip here, is for the apple fritters. I can't speak to any of their other food, and if I lived in the neighborhood or somewhere reasonably close (rather than in Andersonville), I might give something else a try. But the fritters are the star of the show. They are huge--bigger than my hand; nearly as big as my face. If you take them to go (or order them ahead of time), you'll get a single fritter per to-go container because they're so massive. They are filled with chunks of warm, cinnamon-y delicious bits of apple. I can't even eat half of one, they're so big and rich. They're good cold, but they're amazing when they're warm. The staff are quick and efficient, and even if there's a line of people they will get you in and out in a jiffy. You can order for pick up (including apple fritters), though I haven't yet done that. I can't remember if you can use cash or not, but I think they don't take bills larger than $20. Support local, black-owned business and stop in!! read more

According to the locals Old Fashioned is considered a Chicago staple if you're wanting donuts; D'Nesha was extremely helpful with the suggestions and convinced me (a non donut eater) to give the glaze a try and surprisingly it was really good. The donuts I've had in the past are extremely too sweet, or doughy Old Fashion donuts are not either. We also grabbed coffee which was very bold; overall a great cup. If you're heading this way keep in a mind the street is blocked off due too a recent fire take the back roads and park on the next block of (113th,) the walk to Old Fashion isn't far at all. read more
