5 Stars - The doughnuts are just that good! We stayed downtown during our visit so when I saw this shop was an hour away on the train I almost didn't go. Fortunately, my friend was down for the adventure and I am so glad he was. This doughnut shop still makes doughnuts from scratch by hand daily. Doughnuts are made throughout the day so they are always fresh. Ours were even still warm when we arrived. We originally went for the apple fritters but after seeing the doughnuts being made fresh in the window while we were in line, we knew we had to get some of the others as well. We ended up with a mixture of doughnuts including an apple fritter, cinnamon roll, a Texas glazed, and several traditional glazed doughnuts. We tasted them at the bus stop while waiting to leave and immediately went back in for more because they were just that good! These doughnuts literally melted in our mouths and totally hit all of the sweet spots. If I lived in Chicago I would definitely be eating these doughnuts every single weekend. This shop is definitely worth whatever commute may be required for a visit because you will not be disappointed. read more

The name speaks for itself "Old Fashioned!" And when the glaze (of any kind) is hot, OMG!!!! We get a coffee and/or carton of milk and sit in the car and go crazy. The service is awesome, courteous, know their audience and speak the language. While the ambiance fits the name, "Old Fashioned" I have seen some improvements. I've been dying to try these donuts because of how famous they are in Chicago. Unfortunately, I live very far away but i finally got a chance when I was in the area recently. The donuts were classic, no frill type of shop. They dough was fluffy and light while the icing was sweet. You can't go wrong with any of their flavors and it is incredibly cheap. ok. i have a new favorite donut and it's the caramel raised at Old Fashioned Donuts. i consider myself a little bit of a fried dough connoisseur and i've never had a donut this delicious. i've had many great donuts, but this tops them all. the bacon lonjohn at Roeser's has been a longtime fav. i can also always go for a warm powdered donut from the Oak Park Farmers Market or a buttermilk glazed from Talerico-Martin Bakery (in Summit). even the glazed raised at Dutch Girl (Detroit) or the red velvet at Voodoo Donuts (Portland) can't beat it, one-on-one. i may have to re-taste the beignets from Café du Monde (New Orleans) side-by-side... but, until then, i gotta say this donut is the GOAT. i mentioned fritters, and their apple fritter is also the best in town!! AND... the glazed croissant is just as incredible as the caramel donut! but it's not exactly a donut, it's it?? anyway, the raised glazed, strawberry frosted and blueberry cake donuts are also amazing. it's over an hour drive for us, and there's always a line, but well worth it. TIP: the caramel is SUPER GOOEY, so ask them to pack your donuts in a baker's box (for an extra 50 cents). you'll be happy you did. read more
