Espresso tasted very burnt and didn't have crema or any form of sweetness as it should. They had also run out and not restocked about 60% of their pastries-- busy morning but our fault for getting there mid-morning. The tables were not bussed, had dirty cups and plates on them. We had to push the dishes aside with napkins and sat and had our food. They charge a 15% service charge on all orders, I think having a more efficient cleaning, table bussing system could have made this experience better. read more

Lost Larson Bakery is truly a hidden gem in Andersonville. I live in the Chicago suburbs, nowhere near this little bakery. The bakery is beautifully decorated with simple decor that brightens the interior. When I make my way to the city, I must stop here. The bakery has a huge variety of pastries and dishes they serve daily. If you want something to satisfy your ultimate sweet tooth, I recommend their Cinnamon rolls! (they are fluffy and delicious). However, I go for two items, the Afternoon Tea Bun (always great with coffee) and the Cardamom Bun. The Cardamom bun is my absolute favorite since it reminds me of the days back home in Norway. I will also give an honorable mention to the Ham & Cheese Smørrebrød. It is a simple dish, but it is a comfort dish. read more

Food is great, but on the pricier side. My husband and I used to get their country loaf all the time, but the quality has seemed too gone a bit down hill. We still get it occasionally and it's either a hit or a miss. Their cardamom bun, almond lingonberry cake, kale & cheddar scone, and croissants are good and I would recommend (except the chocolate, the chocolate croissant is so-so) from their baked goods. Their breakfast sandwich is also very good. But once again, the price is high. I do like that they compensate their staff well (I think that's the reason behind the high price), and their shop is always clean and they have lot of outdoor seating. read more

Our experience took a little while as they were packed, but once they got to us, it was quick and friendly service. They have some seating here, but somewhat limited. Absolutely ridiculous prices, but also ridiculously good pastries. Their cinnamon roll is amazing, but $6. Two of us got 3 pastries and a coffee and it was $19 before tax. Another time, we got 4 pastries and zero coffees and paid $26. I'm not going to say too much in this review because It's really going to come down to personal preference. My latest discovery! I was having brunch in the area and did an impulsive Yelp search for bakeries nearby to grab some goodies. LL by far had the highest reviews. I learned after visiting that the owner and pastry chef is from former restaurant Grace, which earned 3 Michelin stars. Wow! And you can taste it in the baked goods. While they come at a premium price, the pastries are light, fresh, and expertly crafted. The cardamom bun was flavorful with its warm spices, crisp, and chewy on the insight. Monkey bread was sweet and tasty, but my favorite of the bunch was the chocolate hazelnut croissant, which had a thin layer of chocolate in it, tons of layers of flaky, buttery goodness, and crunchy hazelnuts on top. That was worth the $5.25. I couldn't leave without a slice of the princess cake ($9 - eek!). It was visually colorful and had a lot of fresh flavors inside. It was vanilla sponge cake with pastry cream and raspberry filling, whipped cream, and a marzipan layer on top. A thin almond crunch layer was at the bottom of the cake too. I may splurge on this cake for a future bday to feel like royalty! I don't know what Larson is so lost about... or maybe s/he is lost in pastry heaven, living the dream! read more

Look, I am totally aware that bakeries start very early in the morning, make a certain amount, and can run out early without the ability to just bake up something more. This is fine, but you need to manage your flow as a manager. Here's the rub for me --- I have been here over 10 times, and, without fail, if it's not before 11 AM they've run out of everything. Today I was there by noon and they had nothing left, did not plan to bring anything else out, and said "yeah we had a busy morning, plus we close at 3." 3? Three? 3 PM is three hours from noon, why not just close at noon then? Should we all head to a famed bakery to get a non-famous coffee and sit there like idiots until closing? This business has been around in Chicago for a long time, I really expect them to better understand the data behind their customer flow, peak hours, and how much they need to bake in order to feed demand. The fact that their operating hours and available stock is so out of whack makes this place a complete waste of time to me. They have a large selection of croissants and other viennoiseries, but I don't think their laminated products are very good. However, it's a good spot for a coffee date, and I would come back for the atmosphere. I tried: -Quiche ($7) - silky egg texture with tomato, roasted corn, cheddar, and unrendered bacon. Other than the overly salty crust this was really good. -Kouign-amann ($4) - too dense and bready rather than flaky, but the crunchy caramelized crust is nice. Our server said it was lavender flavored but we couldn't tell. -Blueberry lavender danish ($5) - the pastry was kind of dense and crumbly rather than flaky but the overall taste was nice. It's way too expensive for what it is though. -Raspberry chocolatine ($6) - this is a laminated chocolate pastry filled with raspberry espresso ganache. Would highly recommend the Princess Cake Slice. The flavors blend in well and have creamy/fluffy/lightly crunchy textures. I was pleasantly surprised that the Raspberry Hazelnut Tart wasn't too super sweet too (which I was a big fan of). The Lingonberry Almond Cake is apparently one of their most popular pastries - it was a bit heavier than the other two pastries and nuttier, but still very tasty. Best croissants in the City. I go several times a week to pick up croissants for breakfast. The other recommended items are the cinnamon roll, kougi-amann, afternoon tea bun which taste like sweeter versions of the croissant. If you're looking for a great cafe/bakery experience, I would not recommend Lost Larson. The staff seem quite uninterested in customer service. I asked the server who came to my table if wifi was available and he was quite rude saying there is no public wifi. He asked if I would like silverware and then seemed annoyed that I said yes as he threw it onto my plate. I came on a Friday morning and the cafe was not overly busy. Aside from the customer service, the food (I tried the quiche) is quite good with a delicious flakey crust and the ambiance (minus the fact that there's no WiFi) is absolutely beautiful. I wanted to love this Swedish bakery and I DID love the Cardamom buns I bought. The bread was a gift so no feedback on that. But I am miffed that I was charged a 15% staff fee, in other words a tip for buying bakery goods. I don't pay a fee like this at a grocery store so why a bakery? If a store has added fees they should be announced at point of selection not at the register. To be fair they do serve food to be eaten on premises so possibly a tip is appropriate for that service although I think when you stand in line and serve yourself it should be discretionary. I feel if a store wants my business they owe me honesty. Adding an additional charge over what is advertised is a little sneaky. We got the afternoon tea pastry (I think that is the name), cardamon danish, chocolate croissant, and a pastry that starts with a 'K' it was a sweet and savory croissant (Super yummy)! It was so soft with a gooey hazelnutty-chocolatey center. Lingonberry almond cake: outstanding. I'd never had lingonberry before but it pairs well with almond. It tastes like a cross between raspberry and cranberry. Princess cake: perfect for any marzipan lover. It's a light, fluffy cake with whipped cream and raspberry jam, then covered in marzipan (which is powerful without falling into the trap of tasting like play-doh). Semla: a soft brioche with cardamom cream inside. Not my favorite out of everything I tried but still great. Seasonal croissant: this one was pear, walnut, and ginger. Gooey and gingery. Angry, rude staff, correcting customers about pronunciations (NEVER correct a customer, especially in front of other customers), someone in the back yelling then came onto the floor yelling...in front of, or AT customers! Next: the pastries aren't really that good for the exorbitant price I paid, and the coffee is meh. The food is better...but at what cost?! Also, I didn't notice until later that they also add a % onto your already high check to cover their angry employees healthcare...what?
