Phlour was my go-to cafe whenever I wanted a change of scenery but now it's just a place for a quick to-go pastry. The staff has always been friendly anytime I've visited. They move really quickly so you don't have to wait too long for your items. I've been going to Phlour for years and they've invested a lot into renovating the inside of the cafe. It's a completely different place since I first started visiting but the food has remained consistent. It does seem like they reduced the number of plugs which makes working from the cafe much harder. The music is also a little loud so I wouldn't take important calls from here but it's a good place to meet up with people. The pastries at Phlour are still top tier so I still visit to grab a quick pastry. The baked goods are on the pricey side but the cinnamon bun and quiche are worth it. Some of the other pastries are on the smaller side, so not worth the price but they are very tasty. read more

This is my go to cafe. Their pastries are truly magical. My favorite is the Kouign-amann. He sold me on it after calling it the "5 D's" - divine, decadent, delightful, delicious, and dangerous. Their croissants are flaky and soft. They have great seasonal flavors. And their sandwiches are pretty tasty too. I especially loved the grilled cheese, which I had never tried that way. This is my go to bakery for my weekly sourdough, and am here frequently getting pastries or drinks. Their sourdough is some of the best i have had, with a such a nice outer crunch and that tangy flavor. They have great pastries, some of my personal favorites being the cinnamon rolls (so soft), pretzels (weekend exclusive) and their ham/cheese croissants. Its hard to go wrong with any choices though. They have rotating unique bread, like japanese milk bread, flavored sourdough and some other unique loafs. They also sell their excess bread on a discount the next day and its still fresh. Their drinks are reliable, and most recently tried their eggnog latte and was a big fan of it. I started using their sourdough starter they sell recently and it came out great. The staff is also really friendly and provide helpful guidance to the goods they sell. It's a nice place to work out of to but just a warning there is not plugs to charge your laptops (that i could find). Stopped in because I saw they advertised having sandwiches, but then I was confused when I asked the barista if they had more food on the menu than what was displayed in the cases, and was told that was it. And there were no sandwiches listed on the menu boards inside. Yet I heard other customers talking about them with the other barista. Are sandwiches only available certain days or times...? That was very odd to hear, and I was pretty disappointed because I wanted something savory, but I got an almond croissant which is always delicious. The gingerbread latte was nice too. Just not sure where the confusion over the sandwiches occurred, as they even sell bags of chips near the register... maybe I will try again, maybe not. The staff here is honestly amazingly incredible and so friendly and creating a real beautiful small town vibe! The sweetest humans in the area to a point where I will walk the extra distance to see them versus the three other coffee shops I'll pass on my way. I have purchased Phlour's breads for many years at the Lincoln Park farmer's market, but this was the first time that I have ever been in their shop on Bryn Mawr. Wanting to have a decent baguette to go along with a pasta dinner brought lured me in. First of all, many reviewers mention poor service, but that was not my experience. We know that they run out of some of their bread, so we called ahead to make sure they still had baguettes, and to put two aside for when we arrived. The person on the phone could not have been more helpful or pleasant. When we arrived, she had our baguettes wrapped and ready to go. The bakery is bright and welcoming, and the area where they make their baked goods is open for viewing. It was moderately busy with several groups of customers having coffee and lunch. I LOVE old school bakeries with shelves and cases overflowing with fresh baked goodies. Phlour is not like that--they have more of a limited selection, but what I saw was tempting. In addition to the baguettes, I purchased a half loaf of sourdough bread (I've had it before), and two blueberry muffins. They also had cinnamon rolls, mini-quiches and a few other items for sale. Other than the baguettes and sourdough bread, there were no other bread choices. Phlour's sourdough bread has a nice tang--with way better flavor than an expensive, half pullman sourdough loaf that I recently purchased from Publican Quality Bread. That said, the Phlour sourdough loaf has huge holes. I expect holes in a good sourdough bread, but holes bigger than 1-inch seem to indicate something that needs to be controlled in the proofing process. But the flavor is there, and it toasts beautiful, so it's a minor complaint. The blueberry muffins were big and flavorful--we loved them. Next time I am there, I want to try a mini-quiche. Phlour is a wonderful bakery on Bryn Mawr, and well worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

I call this place "the bread Nazi." "No bread for YOU!" We need more good businesses on Bryn Mawr. I'd love to support this place. I live around the corner, but every time I've gone into the store I leave empty handed. My favorite product is something they only sell at farmer's markets. I've asked them to hold one of those loaves of bread for me at the store on Sunday morning, and they have refused multiple times even when I offer to pre-pay. I see no reason to go back. The staff comes across as uninformed and uncaring. The lack of management's interest in customers is evident in the fact that no responses are given to any of the comments here on Yelp or on Google maps. The owners would do well to hire someone to train staff in the basics of customer care. read more

Here are my pros amd cons: Pros - Its a local business - Quite - Great selection of pastries, sandwiches and bread (food was DELICIOUS) - They have wifi - Plenty of room to do my work when I want to get out of my house - Everything is made in house Con - Customer service. I didn't go there to get red carpet service, however I did expect a simple hello. Unfortunately, I felt like I was bothering the girl behind the counter. I walked up, said hello, and all I got was a stare. I mentioned that I have never been there before, in the hopes that she would make a suggestion. Not a peep. I asked her about the blend of coffee of the day. She literally said...."Its the coffee of the day". - Long story short, she didn't want to be there, didn't care about customer flow. Almost everyone that came in had to wait for her to stop talking to the back of house bakers. Almost never smiled. Its to bad that she wasn't taking her job serious. That place if great and I recommend going there. My hope is that the owner reeducates the employee on how important it is to simply say "welcome" or "hello". Phlour serves up fresh and aromatic breads, pastries, and more in a modern spot for remote working and casual meets. I have lived in the Edgewater area for a couple years and always loved Phlour's quippy neon signs, but hadn't stopped in until now. I stopped in on a Friday morning and ordered a mini broccoli and cheese quiche to-go. The quiches are refrigerated, but there is the option to heat it, which takes around 10 minutes. It was well worth the wait. Five minutes in, the delicious smell of the warming quiche filled the entire shop. When I took it home it was still warm. The quiche was one of the most delicious I've ever had. Flaky, buttery crust, flavorful eggs, fresh broccoli and cheese - I can't stress enough how much I LOVED this quiche. It was perfect for a one-person breakfast. The expected COVID precautions are in place, social distancing, and masks, which I appreciate. This review is for their stand at Green City Farmer's Market in the West Loop, I haven't been to their retail location. Their line is always the longest, and for good reason...their goods are tasty! My staple is their Jalapeño & Parmesan sourdough bread, it's so so good. Great fresh, great toasted, there's really no going wrong with any preparation. Eat it alone, add avocado, cream cheese and lox, make a sandwich! The only reason for 1 star off is the price tag, $11 for a loaf of bread is rich. I've also gotten their pastries (almond, chocolate & plain croissants, cheese danishes etc) and they're good but again the price tag is like $6+ per pastry. Went there this morning to get breakfast. My favorites are the blueberry muffin, cinnamon roll, and quiche. I order a broccoli and cheddar cheese quiche, blueberry muffin, and iced coffee. I asked for an iced americano and the barista (who is cute and friendly) told me that they don't make espresso drinks, so he suggested an iced coffee which I did. Phlour was recommended by my nephew and niece who live around the corner. I ordered the croissant with egg, bacon, cheese. This was one delicious breakfast croissant. The croissant was soft and flaky and the fillings were awesome. A perfect amount of all the ingredients. My daughter had the blueberry scone and loved it. Staff was great and at a tentative making sure all was well. The coffee was rich and smooth. My only disappointment was it was closed on Monday for my return visit but everyone needs a day off. Phlour is an adorable bakery and cafe in Edgewater. Anywhere that proclaims to be Pro Gluten in a super instagrammable way is alright by me. My friend and I popped in for some coffees and breakfast on a weekend and enjoyed everything we had. My cheddar cheese, egg & bacon sandwich was on a huge croissant and incredibly filling! Actually I couldn't even make my way through the whole thing but it was delicious. I tried my friend's PB&J which came on pHlour loaf and was enjoyable though I much preferred my sandwich. Pro-Tip: They participate in A La Cards' Cheap Deck so you can get $5 off $10! They have some staple items, but also special weekend brunch items. Be sure to check up at the register for a list of all the weekend options like Egg-In-A-Hole, Avocado Toast and Brioche French Toast, nomz! I heard great things about this bakery and I just so happened to be in the neighborhood. So I stopped in to try a breakfast sandwich but they don't make those anymore. I tried a croissant which was pretty awesome. Wanted a cappuccino or cortado but turns out they don't have an espresso machine. Drip coffee only! That said, meh! UPDATE!: I contacted the manager and explained the situation. They were upset by this as well. He explained to me that there was an awful incident with a dog in the bakery previously, and with the false service dog epidemic some of the employees are on edge when it comes to service animals. I informed him of the two laws, state & federal. That his employee broke and he was extremely apologetic and encouraged me to come back in for a better experience! I will be revisiting out of good faith and hopefully an apology from the specific employee! Original post: I would put zero stars if that was an option. I went in excited to get coffee from a local spot instead of Starbucks. With my small service dog in training for epilepsy alert. Whom I was carrying and was behaving perfectly. I was quickly and aggressively asked to leave. When I pointed out he was service in training I was asked for proof (first illegal act) then when my papers from doctors and vets was not sufficient I was not asked but told to leave. Second illegal act. I will be filing a formal complaint against this cafe with the ADA. I have NEVER been denied service because of my service dog in training. Even at 5 star dining establishments, he has been welcome everywhere because that's the LAW! I hope the owners now how their staff is treating customers with disabilities. read more

FANTASTIC! Happy to report that my new favorite Reuben sandwich is steps from my apt! This sandwich is made panini style, and the proportions of corned beef to kraut to cheese is spot on. It's LARGE, and enough for two to share. Really tasty. I've also had the Croque Madame here, which was also excellent. I like that they have a limited menu. Phlour is the new occupant of what used to be a Lovely Too bakery cafe--and the new version wins over the old in almost every way. The new owners have updated the inside with glass--floor to ceiling front windows can open up to the outside in the summer, and on the inside, what used to feel claustrophobic and tight is bright and wide open with a glass wall surrounding the baking kitchen. Nicely done. Sandwich menu is better: I keep getting the croque madam because it's SO GOOD. I also still am not positive I'm saying it right. For here coffee mugs include free refills and water is available on the sideboard (this must be improved from earlier reviews...) I've found service to be on-par with nearly with most coffee shops in the city, and the staff are friendly, although things still can be a little slower than you'd want if you're in a hurry (pulled over my car once with flashers to grab a quick coffee... and regreted it). But the vibe here is more laid back and great for lunch and getting some work done, so I'm good with it. Drip coffee today for me wasn't as good as some other days. They serve Metropolis, which is quality, but today it wasn't warm enough and the aromatics weren't too good. Thinking it had just been sitting too long in a pot. I first heard of pHlour Bakery from their booth at the Glenwood Sunday Market. Turns out it's a cozy little bakery and cafe tucked away in Edgewater. The interior is gorgeous, down to the playful wallpaper in the bathroom. Their front windows open onto the sidewalk which allowed a cool breeze to waft in. They also have a cute "Pro-Gluten" neon sign on the wall- this is definitely a place you want to document on social media! My party of two came in for lunch on a Friday afternoon and most of the tables were occupied by individuals on laptops. This is great for people looking for a cozy spot to work for a few hours, but having so many people camped out meant that we were stuck at a small table all the way in back near the bathrooms with dim lighting. The McLean sandwich typically comes on toasted bread, and I asked if they would leave it untoasted for me. They told me they'd need to check, since their bread typically comes straight out of the freezer. I thought this was odd considering they are a bakery. While they were able to accommodate my request this day, I didn't think the bread tasted super fresh. Otherwise, the toppings were crisp and flavorful and the sandwich was absolutely massive. We left feeling very satisfied. With some minor tweaks I could see this being my go-to spot for a killer sandwich. read more
