Having had a few hours to digest the dining and visitor experience at Losanti along with the decor, I can wholeheartedly say that I cannot and will never recommend this restaurant.
We have dined at simple road stands and multiple Michelin starred establishments and everywhere in between throughout the US and have reviewed each experience on their own merits either here or elsewhere.
I preface this review with the above as the way we were spoken to and treated on a special occasion was demeaning, ridiculous, and beyond condescending as if we had no clue as to what allegedly made Losanti so special, by both our server and the on-duty manager.
When making the reservation, I asked explicitly for indoor seating as the electronic system did not allow for choosing indoor/outdoor and noted that the dinner was to celebrate a significant evening.
I do not fault the restaurant for this system as this was a third-party application, but when we arrived promptly for our reservation, the front of house clearly did not look at the explicit notes and proceeded to seat us outdoors in a less than ideal two-top even though there were plenty of seating indoors. Reading the notes takes a minute and with multiple people at the FOH milling around on their phones or chatting, the dinner rush or lack thereof, the fact they did not do this is a head scratcher.
As an aside, their pretentious notes about not being responsible for well-done steaks, a $20.00 reservation cancellation fee, and how they are a boutique steakhouse with a scratch kitchen is laughable.
I digress.
Our waiter arrives and sees that the table setup was uncomfortable with no place to place personal items and makes a joke about how it would not be a good idea to have it fall into the food, but makes no effort to make any accommodations. He then asks what we are celebrating and this further confirms that there was no review of reservation notes and indicates a lack of communication between staff. We share why we are there and he tries to make small talk and assumptions and peg us into holes about possible professional affiliations. Fine. I guess.
Between the outdoor bugs and all of the pink flags, we should have left, but wanting to support a local business and not wanting to derail a special evening, we stayed.
We asked for recommendations for wine pairings and received several, but we were still indecisive. In other establishments, we have always been offered a taste of several if we were unsure and before deciding on a bottle but it did not happen here. Okay. Instead, we selected a bottle based on staff's recommendation, and when it came out it was warm, it was sour and devoid of any of the notes he described. There was a back and forth about whether or not the restaurant would take back the bottle - it was listed as a by the glass - before being lectured that they would and that usually when the bottle is opened table side it is not for taste, but rather for the recipient to taste if the wine was corked.
I knew that and did not need to be told. The wine was not good. It was trash. Had a small flight/taste been offered, we would not be in this position. Please take it back.
Then mains and sides come out. The sides were fine. Seasoned well and cooked expertly.
Both the steaks, a filet and a ribeye, were inedible. The temperature was right, but it tasted as if the meat was seasoned by one person, another person came along and did not know that it was seasoned, and seasoned again before being topped off by finish salt.
We brought this to the attention of the waiter. He got the manager. She came by, apologized and took the steaks and said that they would be remade.
But she had to get in a passive aggressive dig about how we should eat up our sides as if we were kids being reminded to eat their vegetables. Now I assume that some people eat sides as mains and what not, but at a steakhouse, a purported boutique steakhouse, I did not come here to eat sides sans steak.
At this point we are 44 minutes into service. I won't go into the rest.
A percentage of the bill was comped, and the gesture was appreciated, but it was not something that we asked for. We simply asked for our food to be hot, prepared correctly, and to expect a modicum or veneer of customer service. Instead, I felt that the staff thought we were trying to get over somehow and wanted a discount meal and should have been happy with what we received.
If that was the case, they are far off the mark. We never had an issue with tipping, paying the bill whatever it came out to be and there are some connotations and undertones that were beyond alienating. I have never written a review of any establishment of this length and do not make it a habit of being this blistering, but Losanti earned this review.
A simple "I am sorry that we did not meet expectations, but would love it if you would consider us again" would have gone a long way and not incurred a one star rating. read more
