I'm between a 3 and a 4 star here. We have been several times, and it's just a little hit and miss. Visited last night during restaurant week. The lobster roll and beef Wellington bites were excellent. The ceasar salad was very average, and my steak, ordered medium rare was fully medium on one side and too rare to eat on the other. The salmon my friends had was much better. Service was ok, Prices, even during a restaurant week feature, were on the higher side. The location is cool enough to bring it from 3 to 4. With rooftop seating, a popular bar and an overall pretty cool vibe, this place could be a 5 star place for me, but it just doesn't deliver as much as it could read more

For such a nice restaurant and view you would think the service and food would match. We sat down and our waiter was quiet slow to come and greet us. I know they were busy for restaurant week and I aknowledge that but it took a long time for our food to come as well. The items on the menu we ordered didn't match the description and the presentation felt sloppy. We orderd the soup and not till after we had our first course and probably 20 mins goes by we were told they were out of the soup. Very disappointing and felt like when we ordered they should've let us know. The caesar salad was small and nothing special. The bread for the lobster roll wasn't even toasted. Everything about our meal felt careless. Our main was the NY Strip and the chef feast for two. The NY strip was cooked well but everything was over salted. The chef feast for two was smaller than anticipated. The NY and filet were not cooked well and tough. It did come with two sides, we chose the mac and cheese and french fries. Those were better than the meats. My friend wanted to order dessert and when the waiter came back he said the kitchen was already closed. I think we should've been notified like any other restaruant would for any last calls before kitchen close. Everything about our experience felt unprofessional and sloppy. Shires is an expensive place to dine and certainly was not worth it. We all left still hungry and unsatisfied. The only thing good about here is the view. read more

I was greeted off the elevator and was quickly informed that the kitchen was closing in 5 minutes. Which was fine, I knew I wanted a steak and I could figure out a side quickly. I asked to sit near a window and they were so nice to accommodate me. Justin was my server and reiterated the kitchen closing shortly. However, he did not make me feel rushed. I asked him what he recommended for an app and he did not fall short of the beef Wellington bites as they were delicious! I ordered the Filet and as a side -- the mushrooms and onions (which included spinach and garlic in it). This meal and side combo worked so well together. The red wine Demi and herb butter for the filet worked well. I had my filet medium rare and it was cooked nicely. But the flavor of this steak was spot on! So delicious. Justin was so kind to box up my leftovers and said he could see if the kitchen would prepare for me a dessert -- even though they were closed. He did not have to do this but I appreciate it so much as I love to finish off my meal with something sweet. They were so sweet to prepare for me the crème brûlée. I had no idea there would be Cinnamon Toast Crunch and it was honestly a nice touch. The custard was rich and creamy and contrasted nicely with the crunchy cereal and torched sugar. I enjoyed everything from start to finish. After a long work day of hustle and bustling, it was nice to have a quick dinner and not feel rushed by Justin. He paced everything perfectly and made me feel welcomed and taken care of. I would return if ever I am booked in Cincinnati again. read more

My friends and I attended restaurant week this fall at Shires. None of us had ever been before, and I'd love to try it out again when the weather is nicer so we can take advantage of the Rooftop. Our server was attentive - quickly catching on to the likes/dislikes/quirks of our group and capitalizing on them (hello extra cherries with our cocktails lol). We all ordered something different to create a bit of a smorgasbord to sample the entire restaurant week menu. I loved the beef wellington bites, mussels, and chicken roulade. We continue to love love this place. My husband and I come here either for Valentine's Day or our anniversary. It's become one of our favorite restaurants to go to when we know we are willing to spend quite a lot of money. They have a great view from all of their windows and the place is just great overall. Ambience is very comfortable and service has always been top notch. Food is always good and there's really no complaints at all! You can either park in the garage across the street or find Street parking. Walk in and they have their own elevator that goes up to the very top. Reservations are recommended! read more

Wonderful birthday experience at the Shireś Rooftop! Beautiful decor throughout. Sultry lighting, and stunning color scheme. Greeted & sat immediately. I opted to get a Moscow Mule. Crafted with care & absolutely delicious. You can tell they make their mixers in house! The feast for two was everything & more. The Caesar salad was gone before I could even get a picture! Steaks were cooked perfectly mid-rare & We enjoyed the fingerling potatoes & Goat cheese broccolini. My favorite part might have been the rooftop remoulade with the grilled shrimp! . 3.5 stars really. Went on a double date with my sister in law and her husband. We sat outside in a greenhouse. It was loud due the wind but overall a decent experience. We decided to celebrate my birthday in Cincinnati and we got sooo lucky with the beautiful weather. The weather has been so hit or miss so I was of course thrilled to get to enjoy some rooftops! We love the summertime and we love to be able to enjoy rooftop drinks all summer. This was the perfect place to celebrate! The menu is pretty vast so we were excited to see a feast for two! And let me tell you, this was quite a feast. Two types of steak, chicken, salmon, and shrimp. You also get a choice of two sides. We chose Mac and cheese and the potato fingerlings. The price was very reasonable - $120 was definitely worth it for all of this food. We devoured what we could and still had left overs to bring back to our VRBO. Salmon was cooked well done and was not very good, filet was asked for medium but was medium rare (not bad but still could have been cooked properly). They do substitute so that was nice. Service was friendly. We were seated in one of the rooftop enclosures, which is what we asked for, however it was right next to the door and was very cramped. Every time anyone passed through the door next to us it slammed loudly. Two-top tables are already small, so with the enclosure we had little wiggle room. The table was also wobbly. I think this place could be cool, but it missed the mark that evening. Maybe if we had one more person with us we could have gotten a bigger seating area away from the door. Nice restaurant "hidden" away on the 10th floor. It has great views of the Ohio river and Roebling bridge. The atmosphere inside has an 'old club' feel. While others mentioned service as a stumbling block, our service was very good- attentive and timely. The pork chop was very flavorful as were the fingerling potatoes. The food was good service was fantastic. However; we had gift cards from Christmas that had Shires listed on it and when we went to use them (100.00$ worth) we were greeted by a manager who stated they did not accept these cards as they did not give permission for them (the gift card company) to put them on it. No offer to discount or anything just sorry about your luck kind of attitude. We paid with my credit card but if they are aware of this issue it would have been nice to have a disclaimer on their website or even as you walk into the restaurant. Aside from that I am sure we would have chose another place to eat at for my wife's birthday. All and all if you plan on going may want to make sure you are NOT using a gift card. read more

We'd talked about trying Shire's for years and never took the plunge, mostly because of the mixed reviews, but their Restaurant Week menu was compelling and we'd been to Nicola's so many times that we decided to take a chance. I'm not sure we'll go back for dinner. The apps and entrees (we had salmon Oscar and the wild boar chop special) were good, the salads meh, and the service very uneven. It took about 20 minutes to get our first cocktail. We had a wait of about 35 minutes between our apps and the salad course. Several tables nearby that were seated after us were served much more quickly. Our server was friendly; it seemed like there were staging issues in the kitchen beyond her control. But the rooftop patio is a wonderful space, quiet with nice seating areas and wonderful views of downtown and the Suspension Bridge. Perfect for a nightcap on a nice fall evening. read more

This is my go-to brunch spot in Cincinnati whenever I'm in town for a Reds or Bengals game. The rooftop view is spectacular on a pretty day; you can see the whole of the city. It's a bit tough to find this place the first time, but many treasures are well-hidden. The decor is classy and - most importantly - the food is excellent. The decor and view make this a hidden gem. I skipped the balcony. It was just too hot for me! There are cozy places to sit with a group of friends. Someone was hosting a 40th birthday party in a section with another bar. The drink that i had and the service was outstanding! The crab cake tastes a bit off for some reason. We ate here years ago when they first opened on a weekend night. The experience was pretty bad, slow service, meh food and we were seated six inches from the table next to us. When friends came into town this week, they picked to go here and I was dreading it, but it was so much better. The place was not busy at all, empty really on a Thursday night, which was sad. Ambiance here was great! We had a greenhouse on the rooftop for our party of 8. Unfortunately they are not see through so you do not get a view from the rooftop. I get that large parties are a lot, but there were a couple mishaps with our experience. My burger and my boyfriend's burger were swapped, he removed all of the toppings and his came with toppings. Bacon on his burger was missing. Spinach artichoke appetizer never came out. Waitress offered me a purse hanger and forgot to come back with it. At the end of the night, they were unable to split the check based on what each person had ordered, so we all had to figure out how much each person owed and venmo one person. It was slightly hectic but overall we had a nice experience. I will say the burger was nothing special, I'd say go for something a little nicer if you come here. I had brought a friend for their very first time, excited to show them the venue after a decent experience about a year ago. Unfortunately, what unfolded left me stunned. To start, the air conditioning in your space is clearly not functioning adequately. The venue was uncomfortably warm--not only for guests trying to enjoy a night out, but especially for your staff who have to work in these conditions. It's unacceptable that a restaurant of your caliber cannot provide basic climate control during the summer. To make matters worse, the quality and pricing of your drinks were extremely disappointing. I ordered a Bee's Knees cocktail and a gin and tonic. The Bee's Knees was $16--a steep price, and frankly, the most expensive I've seen in the city. For comparison, the same drink is $11 at Longfellow and $12 at FiftyFifty, both of which consistently serve exceptional cocktails. The drinks we were served last night were poorly made, lacked balance, and left us genuinely unimpressed. I was shocked at the overall decline in your bar program and the lack of attention to detail. Shires is a beautiful venue with enormous potential, but last night was a major letdown. I strongly suggest they send their bar team to places like FiftyFifty, Longfellow, and MidCity to understand what true cocktail craftsmanship is - I walked away with a negative impression--not only for myself, but for the friend I had hoped to impress. Excellent dining evening while visiting downtown Cincinnati! Booked an early dinner @6PM. We were able to walk to the restaurant (2 blocks) from the Hilton Netherland hotel. Great service, pretty view, beautiful historic building! Clean restrooms, but there's a broken down cabinet in one of the restrooms that needs to go LOL. All of the food was good - shrimp with scallions & sweet chili sauce appetizer and a pear goat cheese salad. I was visiting Cincinnati for a conference and stopped in here for the view and a good dinner. When I first walked in the hostess was amazing so if I could give her 5 stars I would. I was set down promptly and my server came over and asked me what I wanted to drink, and then she barely came back to the table. I had to stop her to do appetizer and then she didn't come back to the table, but proceeded to go to the table next to me and then I had to track her down to come back to actually take my order. The filet was served with asparagus, all perfectly prepared. The portion sizes of the sides were generous, so I'd recommend sharing them; I couldn't finish them on my own. The atmosphere was inviting and fun, with the option to hang out outside in comfy seating, perfect for enjoying an appetizer or meal while taking in the view. We arrived at 5:45 on a Saturday night with booking, but outdoor seat is not available, so the lady at the door say we could start indoor, then she will come to take us to outdoor table once there is a table available. So we seated indoor first, after our appetizer, she actually really came. And we totally forget about it. But we were very glad to move to the deck, nice view to the bridge. We ordered green tomato as appetizer then a chef's feast for two of us @99 dollars. It comes a little disappointed due to the portion size. It's delicious but seems not enough for two hungry people. Met my brunch buddy at Shires' Rooftop, located on top of the beautifully renovated building at 309 Vine Street. Although the weather was way too cold to venture outside, the cozy atmosphere inside made up for it. Seating consists of tables, couches and sofas and you can also order at the large bar. The manager was very attentive and kept my water filled. Shires' Rooftop is a pricier local brunch option but dang, the braised short rib hash was sooooo good - very hearty and super flavorful. An incredible view and delicious food ... you can't ask for much more than that! This review has been sitting in my drafts for a hot minute - but I can still say that watching fireworks from this beautiful rooftop restaurant was the best Fourth of July experience I've ever had. We made reservations a few weeks in advance - and called ahead to confirm that our table would be outside. The service was great throughout the evening - although when we told our waiter we would definitely be back to see him again, he told us it was his last week working there! We started with their charcuterie board, "For the Table," which was a beautiful array of meats, cheeses, and toppings. We also couldn't resist an order of the Crab Cakes, which we both agree are a must-order anytime we return. For entrees, we split the Scallops and the Steak Frites. Both were cooked well - but the star of the show was the succotash the scallops were served on! This was my favorite bite of the night - and an absolutely perfect summer side dish. My only critique for the night was the price. Even when we dine at "fancy" restaurants around Cincy, we rarely spend more than $200 for two people (and that's including appetizers, drinks, two entrees, and often dessert). All said and done, this meal topped out at $300 - and while the food was definitely tasty, it wasn't astronomically better than anything else we've had around town. These prices seem out of place in the Midwest - and might be better suited in someplace like New York or Chicago. Came here on NYE and rented out of the igloo with a group of 10. Obviously serving that many people is not east feat, so shout out to Izzy for being a rockstar! It wasn't 100% perfect, but I can't fault her for it. It was cute and cozy, with pillow-lined seats in a 80% circle with a table in the middle. It came with a blanket and music to connect to. It was very toasty inside compared to what I'd been anticipating. It has a great view of the City from outside of it in the Central Business District (CBD). Once it hit midnight we could see faint fireworks shooting up around the City. We were also provided champagne (a surprise I didn't expect). I loved the old fashioned as well, which was reasonably priced. We were also provided a limited al a carte menu to order from. There was some miscommunication when other servers would come and we thought they took our orders, but then drinks never arrived. Our igloo also wasn't ready on time for our reservation, and then the first round of drinks took nearly 40 minutes, so it was almost 11 -- 1 hour into our reservation with 1 hour to go. With a $500 minimum tab (between us all) we were worried we weren't going to be able to fulfill it at that rate, but after that service picked up. Again, NYE and large group I understand it's not going to be perfect and we still had a great time. read more

Hubbs and I had a delightful dining experience at The View. Now that I am elderly, I've discovered that I LOVE beets. The beet salad did not disappoint. Scallops are also a personal fave, so clearly I had to have them and the butternut squash ravioli. Delicious. White and light yellow heirloom tomatoes gave the dish a little extra pop. The Hubbs had the pork chop. He said it was good but mine are better (he's a jerk like that, and also why we rarely leave the house.) Regardless, it was so big he couldn't finish it. Came here for my loves birthday lunch after leaving the Monet exhibit and it was truly an incredible experience. From the views, to the food. Its was phenomenal. We visited during restaurant week so Shires had a featured menu with some specials. I had the chicken platter which was essentially chicken and dressing made fancy lol. Legitimately the worst place I've ever been to. Service was good for the first 10 minutes but then our server literally disappeared. Got the Island Breeze and it tasted like chemicals. Sent it back for something different, then took 10-15 for a beer and an old fashioned. I had to get up and ask another server if it was coming. We waited for the food for like 30 minutes and just ended up cancelling everything and leaving. Unless you have half a day to wait, don't come here. read more
