We read about how good the fried chicken is, so we called to make reservations for a Saturday night (you must call). The place is small and had a very weird vibe between fine dining and kitschy. White tablecloths, but then lots of purple and pictures of roosters everywhere (I realize the name, but hmmm). Our server was lovely but would disappear for too long between times when she should have been present. We ordered our drinks at 745pm, and I watched them sit at the end of the bar. Finally, at 805pm, I went to the bartender and said, "those are our drinks that have been sitting there for a while". Our server brought them over like we ordered them 5 minutes prior. But the lovely owner/manager came over and said the "drinks are on me" because we waited so long. We appreciated that! The fried chicken was good, but the breading was very salty. The green beans were almost inedible because they were so salty. The mashed potatoes were average. The biscuits were fantastic. The fried deviled eggs were okay. A regular deviled egg is better. The shrimp and grits had a lot going on. The shrimp was lightly battered and fried (?) and the flavor of the dish was bold. Our second time to Purple Poulet was as fantastic as the first. We had the same server and she was just as gracious and took excellent care of us. I really should get her name. Two of us, including me, ordered the Grouper special. It was grouper dredged in flour with two large shrimp prepared in a similar way, with a very light batter. The fish was served over mashed potatoes and a corn/jalapeño sauce. The jalapeños were loaded with flavor and were just the slightest bit hot. Hot is actually an over statement. I avoid jalapeños in most dishes, but I enjoyed every one of them on the grouper meal. Mark had the chicken again because he loves it. My nephew got the chicken and waffles. The waffles were loaded with bacon and the dish looked phenomenal. One person ordered the seafood melange. It is a large meal. She ate half and was looking forward to the rest for lunch. The other person had the Cajun Surf-n-Turf. He enjoyed it and said the shrimp was the star of the plate. Three of us ordered the special bread pudding soufflé. Oh my... it was delicious. It was a lot and we recommend sharing. It was also very, very sweet, but tasty indeed. Three people shared the chocolate trio or something along those lines. They all enjoyed it. Went here as a last minute dinner. And boy were we surprised by the cozy atmosphere (located in an old house) friendly service, great bar and excellent fried chicken. We ate at the bar as it was a Saturday evening. And we didn't have reservations. But this did not disappoint! Our bartender/waiter was excellent- attentive, informative and friendly. The specialty cocktail of the day a peach bourbon mix was yummy. The sorbet served as a palate cleanser was great. The star of the show was the fried chicken - it was hot, fresh, crispy and extremely yummy. They offer a very large selection of bourbons. Can't wait until our next visit. read more

My mother-in-law loves this place. We've been here a few times over the years and it's usually an expensive visit but the food is amazing. Their new location in Newport is very roomy and there seems to be plenty of street parking. We always have family service here in the ambiance is very fancy southern. The food just can't be beat though. It's just delicious! The deviled eggs, it's all just so amazing and someone is really doing a good job of incorporating southern food into just a really delicious dinner. Family had a diverse range of dinner including the main bird and the chicken fricassee. I did have the chicken fricassee and it was pretty darn delicious! It may not have looked as good as it tasted. I've been hearing a lot about this place for a but and remember when it was the Green Derby. I remember hearing about it when it was at Dayton, but never made it over. Came in tonight at 5 on the dot since it was since it was Valentine's Day weekend and we didn't have a reservation. Big upgrade from derby for sure! Very well decorated. Sat down and waited a minute but they were trying to figure out the 30 guests that just walked in. Good sign right! Talked to Dillon, bartender, and gave us a good description of everything and suggested some drinks. We had about all of them lol. Great bourbon selection. Honestly never had chicken cock but was really good. That's a bourbon FYI Ordered some apps..biscuits, fondue, and Caesar. First off thought caesar was, is this a Caesar salad. Omg l, so good. Friend even commented on how it was. The star for me though was the blue cheese fondue, I could have just had a plate of that. Had the biscuits and they were also good. Didn't each much of those as trying to slow down on the carbs. Again, fondue hands down the best!! Entrees were a special of halibut..so freaking good!! The fried chicken my friend had was great but don't know I would say the best, that's a steep one. Had some bred puddin too so don't miss out. Honest opinion 4.5, nothing is perfect, well, mostly. Then you see the Bourbon selection - feeling like Buffalo Trace, Weller, or Old Forester? It's there. Want to stay local? How about the Purple Poulet's barrel pick with New Riff? It's there (and delicious!). Before you even get to the main course, let's talk about the sweet potato beignets....mouth watering! Our server told us all about the food and brought us a palate cleanser of some kind of amazing Gelato that I wanted to eat more of! Then the food - i went for the seafood melange with shrimp and crayfish, but I got to try their legendary fried chicken. The third star in this review is for the serving staff, especially Kelly who was outstanding in her warm professionalism throughout the evening. Ask for her if you have the opportunity. The first two stars are for food quality. Our third experience of this restaurant. It has shaved offerings and unfortunately, aside from fried chicken and desserts, has shaved quality. The Halibut special was neither seasoned nor prepared well. It was pre-frozen halibut that had a bit of refrigeration burn and simply did not do the job. The other special, a beef Wellington, was a poor representation of this dish. I've had many over my years - this one would have lost Waterloo to Napoleon. Dry, inferior quality beef, and a pastry shell that was thick and lackluster. The desserts were terrific. A bread pudding enchased in a lovely meringue dome was heavenly. As was the coconut cake. The new location is much nicer and bigger. Same older crowd, maybe because it's not cheap to eat here. The owner / hostess seemed much nicer than when we visited years ago, which is good. The fried chicken still lives up to the hype, and seeing as you can make two meals out of this $28 dinner, it's not bad. Everything else on the menu is about $2-4 dollars more than it should be and there's a lack of anything really "lite" on the menu, but if you're looking for good Southern food it's a great spot. read more

In general, the staff seems intense, matter of fact & often terse. Rarely a genuine smile or moment to linger at the table. Turning over tables & following protocols seems paramount. I saw something about the Purple poulet on Instagram a few months ago and it has been on my list ever since. I went tonight for the first time with my wife and had an absolute amazing meal. My wife ordered the fried chicken and I ordered the shrimp and grits and both meals were fantastic. Appetizers were a nightly special with the biscuits. It was heaven between the unique devil eggs and extra crisp fried chicken the meal didn't disappoint. Every bite was a culinary explosion in your mouth making your tastebuds dance. So, had the turtle soup that was very good but I think over priced at $16 for a half of a bowl. For dinner I had the fried chicken that supposedly won awards but it was not my favorite and I would give it a 3. It was ok but although crisp not well seasoned. My son had the salmon that he loved but the glaze was not for me but I know he would rate it as a 5. I would have liked other than corn bread or blueberry for my soup but that is not available. So, service was very good, atmosphere quaint, and food ok but I think expensive for what I had but if the flavor and amount for what I got was different I might change my opinion. Had to pick one and, as purple is my favorite color, Poulet got the nod. It was a Saturday at dinner time and we had no reservation. Would we get a table? We did! Summer is slow, they said. The place was busy but not full. The hostess sat us right away. Beautiful, small space with a dozen or so tables and the bar all in one room. They employ very young support staff (one celebrating his 17th birthday) who were polite, attentive, and hard-working as they filled water, cleared plates, delivered dishes and such. Our server, Christie, was on her game. Everyone was. We ordered Deep Fried Deviled Eggs, a first for us both. Unique and Delicious with a light coating of their chicken batter, flash fried. Two topped with bacon, two with peppers, two with caviar. My wife got the nightly Special, a beautiful baked halibut dish with shrimp and more. She loved it. I, of course, got the "Claim to Fame", a four-piece fried chicken dinner with green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. Rated Best FC in KY by Southern Living and I don't doubt it. Excellent. Lightly breaded and crispy. Balanced spices, not salty. Breading to chicken ratio was perfect! I saved the thigh to take home. Ate it cold and it was perfect! Beautiful location and building in Newport, KY. Great service and a wide variety menu. Our group enjoyed many dishes and made positive comments about their food. Not many vegan options that didn't involve fried food. I finally settled on the faux chicken dish and requested that the faux chicken not be served just leaving the rice and sauce. It was ok. I don't recommend the praline nuts. They were soft and not crunchy as would be expected. Our group of six didn't finish them. Dined there last night with another couple to celebrate our husband's birthdays. We had a 7:00 reservation, we arrived at bit early and waited at the bar. The bartender was pleasant and served us promptly. Our friends arrived at 7:00 and we were seated. The server, Aliyah, was very knowledgeable and asked if we were celebrating anything. We told her two birthdays. We ordered drinks and told her we wanted to chat a bit. Our friends like to try different bourbons, and they were not disappointed in the Manhattans they ordered. We also ordered 2 appetizers for the table the next time Aliyah came to the table. At 7:30 we were asked if we were ready to order because the kitchen would be closing soon. They close at 9! We said we wanted to wait. We started to feel a bit rushed and it made it uncomfortable to enjoy our appetizers and drinks. I will say the food was very good, although a bit pricey. But it was a special occasion, and we were comfortable with the cost. At the end of the meal, we ordered dessert and by this time felt like they were trying to get rid of us. Yes, we were the only people left but it was only 8:30ish. Although the food was good, the way they treated us compared to the gracious way other tables were treated was very apparent. For an evening, we went out for a special occasion, we felt rushed and like we were an imposition for the hostess and the kitchen. The hostess/owner did check on our table once but was never very pleasant. or smiled much. Alyiah was pleasant through the entire meal. I also wondered why if the server asked if we were celebrating something was it never acknowledged again. Even when we ordered and paid for dessert. For an evening that cost over $300.00 dollars for 4 people, that included 3 chicken dinners we would have left with a more favorable impression. There are many good restaurants in the Newport/Covington that would be happy to have 4 diners that wanted to enjoy cocktails, appetizers, dinner and dessert. So sadly, due to the rushed manner in which we felt was being forced from the kitchen and the hostess/owner, it would not be my first choice to dine in the future. read more

Usually we go to Precinct for special occasions and this was my birthday treat to myself being pregnant I have been obsessed with fried chicken lately so we tried Purple Poulet and it was hands down best fried chicken I've tried to date. The assorted fried deviled eggs were so good, we got the claim to fame- chicken dinner with the best green beans I've ever had and bacon whipped mashed potato's, my husband got sweet potato waffle with bacon topped with fried chicken, split mac and cheese and split a piece of bourbon pecan chocolate pie that came with scoop of cherry chocolate almond ice cream. The meals come with a palette cleanser- blood orange sorbet before the meal and cornbread and banana walnut bread way too much food but we love leftovers. Seriously will be dreaming of this meal for next few months it was phenomenal and very reasonably priced read more
