On a recent Saturday night we got off to a rough start here. We took seats at the bar to watch football and eat some dinner. We sat there for about 10 minutes and all three bartenders failed to acknowledge us at all. They seemed to only be serving patrons at one end of the bar. Odd. Finally, one of the bartenders came down and took our drink order. She acknowledged the longer wait and told us the round of drinks would be on the house to make up for it. Very professional and great customer service. After that, all went well. We loved the crispy zucchini fries with marinara dipping sauce. The bison burger had great taste to it, and the butternut squash soup tasted a bit like pumpkin pie in a bowl. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and chatted with several other patrons at the bar. A friend of mine and I went to zoombeezi bay for the day. To enjoy some much needed water time during the hot heat. Afterwards we decided to stop by local roots. When arriving the place smelled amazing. And was rather busy. Service was great. But in all honesty the food was.. bland. The best part being the Caesar salad. We ordered zucchini fries. And their white pizza. But both were bland, and could have used some more flavor or pizzazz. For 50 dollars. Nothing really stood out, but the atmosphere was great. Staff were friendly. Found this place while on a road trip. Loved absolutely every moment! The only disappointment is I didn't know it had an adorable outdoor patio. The inside was still welcoming and clean. Every staff member was awesome. The hostess was polite and prompt. Our waitress Jordan was overly accommodating and knowledgeable. There were 5 of us and everyone loved their food. Everything was obviously fresh but also had such great flavor. I got the spinach salad and had to try the maple balsamic dressing so mixed it with the citrus one it came with it. It was so good. My husband was in love with his chipotle pork chop. It had the perfect balance of spice. After seeing a pizza go by we wished we would of got one. It looked so good. So awesome to see so many types of beer selection. My husband had a rhinegeist pixel. I tried the strawberry mango sunrise. Both were good, wished we had more time to stay and drink more. Very fun local restaurant with nice live music. The laid back vibe is impressive. I got the cod fish dinner with fingerling potatoes, and steamed broccoli. It came with a tartar sauce. Overall the meal was delicious but would have liked some more fresh herb toppings on it potatoes and fish. One of my friends got the lobster Mac and the other got a cajun pasta, they both tasted amazing!! The cajun pasta definitely had a kick to it. There was ample parking and downtown powell seemed to be pretty alive. Definitely make a reservation because it books up pretty quickly. read more

My husband, toddler, and I had a very enjoyable Saturday evening at Local Roots. (I think I'd like to give it 4.5 stars if possible). The place was crowded when we arrived (with a more lengthy wait for the patio, where an excellent band was performing live music all evening), but our wait for a table only ended up being 25 minutes, and we took that time to walk around Powell and pop into the winery a block away. Once seated, the server offered a "toy box" to my daughter, which was metal lunch box with some figurines in it -- she loved it, and the toys were quiet and didn't get in the way of eating. The server said the boxes were the owner's idea, and this offers a nice welcoming touch for families (though the restaurant also seemed perfect for a date or an adult evenings out-- good balanced atmosphere for anyone). I'm not sure why another commenter said the menu was limited, because there were pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and a number of interesting starters and entrees (from seafood to pasta to beef to vegetarian dishes), all of which were made with local (or Ohio raised) ingredients. In fact the specials featured ingredients directly from the owner's farm (like the fried green tomatoes, which we ordered). The lamb lollipops were a standout-- perfectly cooked, served with a kind of bacon jam for dipping. We ordered the veggie pizza, and my husband's only complaint was that it was so overloaded with veggies that it became almost difficult to eat (a lot of it sliding off the crust)-- the flavors were very good though. They had an extensive drink menu as well. The serving staff were all so friendly and accommodating, the food was satisfying and interesting, and the atmosphere was fun-- and afterwards we hung around outside to listen to the band. Not a single wait staff has approached us to take an order, see whether the drinks we eventually fetched from the bar need to be refreshed...it's like we're invisible! Don't come here if you're hungry, value service or have any expectation of ordinary restaurant functions. Part 2: Turns out there was a mixup regarding who was covering our table. We had spent the day at the zoo and decided to check out Local Roots for dinner since they had so many good reviews. Our server was fantastic and walked us through the menu and explained the story of the restaurant. I ended up getting the Loaded Bison Burger and under the servers recommendation, the Blue Cheese Hash. Be careful if you order the hash.... One minute it's there, the next you're licking the bowl like an uncivilized neanderthal. This stuff is like a drug, it is so freaking good. When I come back, I'm just getting a plate of it. The burger was also really good, cooked to perfection and the onion straws had really good flavor. I had their Hard Apple Cider to drink, which is had a touch to much cinnamon for my liking, but still was quite tasty. You can tell the owner takes great pride in her business, from the food quality to the energy within the staff. Highly recommend supporting this great local business! read more

I had my first meal at Local Roots last week. This was my first lunch out with friends in about a year. The meal did not disappoint. I ordered the Lamb Lollipops with smoked bacon, onion jamb (the three pack) and also the greek salad. They were perfection. The lamb was cooked perfectly. If you overcook lamb it tends to get tough. These were the exact right consistency. The bacon onion jam was a great pairing, it was sooo good. I would have lifted the container to lick the remaining jam off but I remembered my manners and refrained. The salad was fresh and we'll dressed. I believe the feta was goats milk feta which I love so that worked out great. Everything was fresh and crisp. Not only was the company great. The food was amazing. read more

This place was amazing!!!!! Our server, Beth , was so lovely. She took great care of us & was very attentive. She greeted us with the story of their restaurant when we told her we had not been here. She told us that everything was from the owners local farm just a few miles away. How freakin cool is that !!!!! We started with the cheesy bread & you could tell it was homemade & fresh!! Absolutely delicious! Next course was the caesar salad, pretzel bits & the chicken tortilla soup. The salad & the soup were a little on the spicy side but the pretzels were great. For entrees we had "The White" pizza which was sooooooo good i would definitely recommend. LITERALLY the cheesiest pizza i have ever seen! We also had the Local Burger & the BLT. Took my daughter and her friends here for dinner to top off the Bachelorette day. Food was mediocre at best. Fish without seasoning, sloppy made sandwiches with soggy veggies, entrees overcooked and dry. Wasn't busy..we had a reservation.. Bad food in today's world is ehhh. So many restaurants struggling for help. Main complaint...Service. Lots of wait staff standing around...talking... Even discussing customers loud enough to be heard. Food plates dropped on the table loudly.. Drinks not refilled, asked for straws and got the stink eye, condiments on the table were empty or filthy. And asking for replacements got me an eye roll. Wouldn't go back if it were the only restaurant available.. Luckily its not.... So many more options. So save your money and go somewhere else read more

One of the best things about visiting friends in different towns is getting to try their favorite places. While Yelp is a great resource, in many cases there are multiple restaurants with high ratings from which to chose, and friends have that knowledge of what you would enjoy. Needless to say, our friends took us to this restaurant because they wanted to share their positive experiences with us. Admittedly, it was a little chaotic when we arrived for dinner but what can you expect in a popular establishment. If it was not good, then no one would be trying to eat there. After a few minutes at the bar, we were seated. The server was VERY knowledgeable about the menu and drink selection, giving great advice from the wide variety of options. Folks at our table had entrees ranging from pasta with chicken, to Stromboli's, to salmon fillets. All was great and consumed greedily. Plus there were greater salads and soups to start and awesome desert (basic but very good cookie with ice cream). And there was a nice wine list (I am told) and a good selection of beers on tap and in bottles, including local brews (my favorite). Go check it out. You'll enjoy it. Only "negative" part of the experience was that the anteroom to the restaurant was not heated. We ended up seated next to the door and had a bit of a blast of cold air whenever anyone came in. Just avoid that first table on winter days, and I think that you will be ok. read more

This is our second visit to Local Roots, and it won't be the last. After finding this local gem on our last trip in Ohio, we knew we would have to revisit the next time we were in the Buckeye State. My fiancée and I intentionally choose different menu items this time, and just like our first visit, every dish was amazing. The wait staff and service, just like before, were quick, and pleasant to chat with. Local Roots is a true farm to table experience that doesn't rely on gimmicks, just great food and a great experience. You really can taste the difference with how fresh the ingredients are. I've been coming here for years since the place opened and have always had great service. Tanner helped us this time and he was knowledgeable and attentive. We were seated in the back banquet room, which I love since it is spacious and not too noisy. We were able to hear the musician too, which was nice. We started out with the loaded chops and I got the Downeast cider that was on tap. It had a nice flavor and if you like cider, its definitely worth a try since it's seasonal. I was a bit disappointed with my small calzone. It lacked flavor even though I loaded it up with sausage, ham, peppers and mushrooms. The sauce is normally served on the side, so maybe that was it. I felt that it was overcooked and didn't have much cheese. My friend loved her spinach salad though, which came with large, warm shrimp. read more

Not sure where to start. It was Father's Day so I give some benefit of the doubt, and I rarely ever complain. Waited 40 minutes between appetizers and food with no drink refills. Salad was brought with dinner which would have been awesome if we had it while waiting. Acted like it was special to have it out first. My wife's salmon was bland. Hair in the pizza. Happy hour drink priced at regular price. We didn't even mention any of this other than saying we didn't want the salads, just wanted to get out of there. Ordered take out on a Friday afternoon. I ordered the steak salad (sub chicken) and my boyfriend ordered the cod sandwich. My only issue with the meal was that I wish I had asked for a second dressing, but that was on me because I had to option in the take out checkout to request more. My salad pretty great. I love goat cheese and they put huge chunks in it. There wasn't too much of one ingredient. The cod was massive and very filling, fried to perfection. We celebrated a 50th birthday in Local Roots banquet room, in Powell, Ohio. The food was served buffet style. The selections beginning with appetizers and main course selections of steak filets, sea bass and smoked 1/2 chicken were both plentiful and certainly delicious. The sides of creamy mashed potatoes, asparagus were equally delicious. Having an open bar helped to encourage all guests to enjoy the evening. The banquet manager assisted with the planning of the evening as well as assisting serving during the evening. Zucchini fries! I'm not normally a fan of frying my vegetables, but these were astonishingly good. Cut into shoestrings and with a thick batter, they stayed crunchy to the very last one. And yes we devoured the giant plate down to just a few morsels. The lumpy housemade marinara it came with only made it better. At $9, it was a huge portion that could have been shared with 3-4 people. We ordered entrees which were decent but not as good as the zucchini fries appetizer. The regular menu of entrees is kind of expensive (over $20 and most on the the higher end of the scale) but the specials of the day menu was surprisingly inexpensive by comparison at around $12/14. We ordered two specials of the day: blackened chicken with mushroom risotto and crab cake sandwich. The blackened chicken was about what you would expect, and the mushroom risotto came with a huge portion but was overly cheesy and there were hardly any mushrooms in it. It would have been nice to have the risotto balanced out with more flavors from the mushrooms. The housemade crab cake was not heavily fried which I liked but not too memorable. The sandwich had thick red onions which were seared but should have been grilled more thoroughly, arugula and a nice mayo sauce. It came with housemade chips which were cut thick so pretty hard to bite although my companion liked them. Other than the zucchini fries, the entrees were a 3-star experience but my overall rating is 4 stars because the atmosphere is great, service was attentive and friendly, and their happy hour is pretty darn good. Happy hour is dine-in only until 7pm throughout the whole restaurant, not just the bar, and local craft beer is half price and you can get $1.50 domestics (Bud, Miller, etc). There are a handful of half-price appetizers too, but not the zucchini fries. If the zucchini fries were on the happy hour menu, you know where I would be every day at 6pm! TIP: Located in a nice part of downtown Powell, across from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, which is worth a visit after dinner. read more

Holy shit. It's been nearly three years since I first reviewed Roots. I still love the place, as the menu changes, and the seasonal staff changes. Sadly, for me, brunch is gone. They refined the lunch and dinner menu - using seasonal ingredients, having Ohio brews, doing the occasional food pairing (seriously, sign up for these, they're awesome). My favorite? Well, I usually try the specials, but if the special doesn't interest me (I'm not a fan of seafood) I order Steak Au Poivre. Peppered steak with a brandy cream sauce, with red skin potatoes and spinach. Delicious. Want an appetizer? GET THE PRETZEL BITES OR THE LOVE OF BUDDHA. These aren't your typical, freeze-dried pretzel bites with nuked cheese. These are like pretzel rolls with a horseradish sauce and a creamy cheese and bacon dip. Split them with a friend, or else you'll eat the whole plate. Here for lunch? The chicken salad is tasty and perfect! Go on a beer tour - get beer specials and a personalized pint glass afterwards, and drink specials. It's worth it. Get flight of Ohio brews. The bartenders are awesome and the staff is friendly - but they still get slammed a lot on the weekends (And, you know us Powell people, we like to stick around after eating and making tables not open up). read more

Long overdue review for a strong and very consistent watering hole / restaurant nearby. First observation is that their happy hour stands above all others. They maintain a great beer tap selection, with several rotating Ohio taps. Happy hour is from 2-7 PM every single day. That's right - Saturday and Sunday, too. Ohio beers are half-off during happy hour. The food is great here, too, with the Roots salad (pictured) being my favorite. They also have a wide offering of sandwiches, pizzas, etc. read more
