I came in for the veggie burger. I try to eat vegan, so I left off the cheese. The burger was mushier than I was hoping but nothing unsettling. It had a consistency similar to my homemade black bean burgers, so it was actually somewhat assuring. The fries weren't that great, but they were still good, just not a must add unless you just really want fries. The ambience is really nice, and I like that they have cloth napkins. I had to eat it with a fork and after 3 bites, I gave up. It was tasteless, dry and super spicy out of nowhere. They had to try to make this burger this gross. The fries were salty and nothing special. My husband had a regular burger and it was lackluster as well. The onion straws are an expensive bloomin onion, and their staff is comprised of clueless kids. My husband DID enjoy his beer. It was local brew that he enjoyed very much. While qualitative, ingredient-wise, the beef was too compact, resulting in a very dry patty. It was also flavorless. Not here. Jalapeno poppers surprise you with the smokiness of chicken enchilada filling and a crispy fried exterior. Ranch dressing dribbles as you pour with just enough body to spread like a tide of dill and buttermilk. They care about their food. It shows. The finisher? They keep several selections of cider and als on tap. Cold, crisp, foamy heads served in refrigerated glasses. I get it, they close at 10:00. But I left Alamo Drafthouse (where I always feel welcome ) to eat a Haystack and just did not get the warm and fuzzy I am accustomed to when I am a paying customer. At 9:58 a group of 6-8 enters and I guess they really did not get the warm and fuzzy. If you want to stop serving at 9:30, then post it. Yep, this place is pretty yummy. I stopped in here with friends after a work function in the area. I had been meaning to try Haystack for a while, since I frequent Heena Salon, but never had the chance. So glad that I did. It has the format of Hopdoddy, and other burger bars where you order at the counter, and the host/hostess gives you a number where they bring your food to you. They had burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, milkshakes, beer, etc. It smelled wonderful when we walked in. I ordered the haystack burger, which had bbq sauce, bacon, cheese and the fixings. We ordered to go, and they packed all of the veggies separately to keep them crisp. Loved that! The burger was really big, full of flavor, and the bbq sauce was not overpowering. I also ordered a side of fries, which they give you a ton. They even allow you to mix fries with onion strings or fried pickles if you want. Service was fast and friendly. Even though we got our food to go, the hostess asked us if we were sure because a table opened up...It was kind of full at lunch time. I thought that was really nice. Definitely try this place out. Meh. I've experienced better = 2 stars = exactly how I feel. I much prefer Hopdoddy's to Haystack. As soon as I walked into Haystack, I felt like it was a copycat version of Hopdoddy's anyway--from the atmosphere, to their high tables, to their metal trays, and to even the name of their fries. I had El Tres, which came with cheddar cheese, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and a side of Three Pepper Ranch. Reading back on this menu, I probably should have expected it to come so cheesy, but I only saw the "avocado" and that got me to ordering (lol, typical). The cheese was almost a solid when it came to my table. I could easily peel off the plastic-looking cheese off my patty. The burger was SUPER greasy and oily. I know hamburgers are supposed to be greasy, but I don't think it had to be THIS greasy. My buns got soggy pretty fast. The patty wasn't very appetizing. It was hard on the outside, and I couldn't bring myself to finish it. My brother got the Barn Burner, and he also thought Hopdoddy's was way better. Oh, and if you get the kid's "Andrew's Awesome Cheeseburger"... save your child the disappointment and spend that $6 elsewhere. You will get a short, plain cheeseburger--short of awesome. read more

The cashier asked if I wanted mine and I said, no, thinking I wouldn't have any need for it. I ordered the "down on the farm," which is their basic burger. I ordered it medium so of course it came out well done and the bun was soggy. When the food runner came out with the food I advised him that I had not received my beer. He said that he would check on it and after a few minutes and seeing him running food to a couple other tables I had to get up to go to the bar to ask for it. Without a receipt, I was given a skeptical look from the bartender but she asked where I was sitting and said she'd bring it out. Luckily she followed through. I'll stick with Hopdoddy. read more

Unfortunately this place didn't live up to the expectations set forth by other reviews. When our food arrived, we asked where or fries were and the runner said he had to check our ticket. The order taker forgot to include fries on our ticket. Manager comes over and states we didn't pay for fries and it would be a $2.71 more. I understand things like this can happen. But there were no apologies at the mixup and no sense that she even cared. She asked if we still wanted fries and we said yes. Who eats burgers without fries? Fast forward about 10 minutes later and we get our fries after finishing 95% of our burgers. Is it too much to ask for an order of fries and get them to your customer within a couple minutes after an order mixup? When the manager finally brought them to our table, she plopped them in front of us with just a single word muttered: "fries". No eye contact, no pause or care expressed at all. Wondering if we had to pay for them or if they were being comped, I went to the counter and flagged down our original order taker and told him I had to pay for our fries. The manager had also spilled water on my wife's purse, again with no apology or even any acknowledgement. The restaurant was only at about 60% capacity, so I expected a bit more attentiveness. We walked away unsatisfied and came to the conclusion that we would never come back here again. I totally get that mistakes can happen, I worked in the restaurant industry for many years. However, its the redemption for the mistakes made that define the mark of a business we will patronize again and again. read more

Hands down one of my favorite burger joints. Whenever I want a burger, this is the first place that comes to mind. I actually prefer going here over Hopdoddy's. The staff/service is always friendly. It gets really packed during lunch and dinner hour but they are always moving as swiftly as possible. Just an FYI, it is a first come, first seat type of restaurant..so no saving seats! I always order the El Tres, which is made up of the juiciest burger with cheddar & pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, & side of three pepper ranch. I will admit; they had me ad "avocado". And the ranch is AMAZING. Perfect amount of kick to it. My sister has had the Down on the Farm and my husband has had the Escabeche. Both were very pleased with their burgers, as well. I have been dining at Haystack since they opened and the food and service are always excellent! My favorite is the Haystack Salad with grilled chicken. Avocado, bacon & cheese, fried onion strings also are served with the salad, too. All of the hamburgers are great. The beer selection is nice, as they offer some of the best local brews in the area. I'm especially fond of Mosaic IPA. My son loves the Haymaker, a frozen bourbon drink. The atmosphere is casual and appeals to families, couples, singles, well... everyone! You order at the desk, you are given a number, and then one of the staff brings your order to your table. Love this place!!! Everything about this place is top of the line. The employees, the food, the cleanliness are all great. I really like that this place is family owned and that they make everything but the mustard and ketchup in house. I had the Escabeche burger and it was fantastic. It had plenty of flavor but honestly wasn't over-bearing hot either like I sort of expected. The chipotle mayo has some kick (maybe more than the jalapenos). The bread was fresh as well as the veggies. The patty was thick and plenty big enough for two people. My husband ordered the chicken fried burger which is what everyone else raved about and I now know why. It was delicious. It was perfectly fried and smothered in some of the best gravy. The crispiness of the crust paired with the soft bun was incredible. Our friend had the patty melt which also looked incredible. We tried a couple of the stuffed jalapenos and they were tasty and definitely had that spicy kick I look for in jalapenos. The mozzarella sticks were pretty ordinary but tasty. We loved the fried pickles. The onion strings were good and salty and the fries were thick cut Kennebec. Let me just continue to say everything was wonderful. However, we ordered entirely too much food for 4 people. hehe. Try it all but go on different visits. I have yet to taste anything from here that isn't wonderful. Hopdoddy had a baby with Village Burger Bar. The baby is named Haystack Burgers. Their offspring however is just not up to par with their parents. Location wise they picked a good spot. Those that decided not to partake in the food festivites that Alamo Drafthouse offers can walk next door and enjoy some burgers and fries. First thing i noticed was the abundant selection of beers. They had about 25 different bottle selections and 10 beers on tap. Perfect for those who like to get their drink on. The ambiance inside was simple and clean with a high bar table in the middle and a couple of big screens. My friend and I split the haystack burger and some fried pickles. Props that they had jalapeno ranch and chipotle ketchup available instead of only their regular versions. Variety is the spice of life! The bbq sauce and onion strings gave it a nice flavorful taste, but the meat itself was overly salty and lacking the marination. I guess they used the salt to compensate, but it was a struggle finishing the burger. The fried pickles were on the salty side as well. Hopefully it was just a one time thing, cause I do want to try their chicken fried burger next time. read more
