The atmosphere is the only positive thing about this place. The food is an absolute joke. The crab cake Benedict comes with 1/2 of a sweet potato biscuit, a tiny crab cake and 2 poached eggs ON THE SIDE. The basil hollandaise was so scant, I genuinely couldn't taste it. The cinnamon in the 1/2 biscuit you receive is very off-putting with the crab cake and tomato. The crab cake tasted like it was made with canned crab and was quite mushy. I will say though, the eggs were poached very well. The apple slaw and green salad were overwhelmingly sweet, lots of craisins in addition to a super sweet dressing. When Leaping Lizard says farm to table, they are not kidding! Walk towards the back of the outside seating area, you will find a like chicken coop along with some ducks. Their menu consisted of promised farm to table items, chicken & duck, and fresh produce. Being that the neighbor beside the restaurant is the owner, it felt like having a meal right in someone's backyard. Dogs were also welcomed to dine outside, which made it feel even friendlier. ***For the bakery*** About a 2-2.5: Leaping Lizard Cafe offers various soups, signature sandwiches, and wraps. I kind of regret not saving enough room and trying out one of their sammies for lunch/brunch next door, as I decided to check out their bakery instead. The selection looked nice, but I did notice some flies and that most of the baked items did not have a cover/case. We purchased: the Lemon Sugar Cookie, the Chocolate Peppermint Cookie, the Gingerbread Man (that happen to be also gluten-free and vegan), the Blueberry Crisp, and a Lemon Cupcake. The Lemon Sugar cookie had a nice lemon taste to it, and I liked the glaze on top; the cookie also had a chewy-iness to it, making it more of a soft cookie. Same went for the Chocolate Peppermint, as it had softness to it, but this one tasted slightly bitter. The Blueberry Crispy was just okay, as I thought it would have been delicious by the way it looked - it was just way too mushy and soggy. The Gingerbread Man wasn't crispy or soft, and it was a little too sweet for my taste - I expected it to have more of a ginger/cinnamon taste to it. The Lemon Cupcake's frosting was a bit grainy, and the cake itself was a bit dried out. Service was very friendly, and the place itself was cute. I cannot praise the service enough. Betsy was attentive, friendly, and made a point to remember our names + my boyfriend's birthday. We ordered cookies for dessert at the end of our meal and she brought it out with a candle to light. My boyfriend really wanted something more breakfasty so Betsy asked the kitchen if they could make a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and they were able to accommodate! When we arrived, we thought there'd be a huge wait time because the lot was full but there's deceptively way more seating in the backyard. This was a great stop for lunch on our drive down from NJ to NC. We needed a break from driving and wanted to enjoy some scenery. Leaping Lizard was the perfect opportunity to do just that. The cafe has a huge dining outdoor area in the back that is surrounded by a beautiful garden. The area is completely shaded underneath the canopy trees, and it's a very serene place to enjoy lunch. I'm taking off a star because the menu is a little limited. There are a few variations of sandwiches that are offered in sandwich, salad, wrap and panini form, and then a few other random items. I went with a pressed sandwich that had turkey, ham, gouda and an aioli spread. The sandwich was really tasty and also very large. That plus a side of potato salad and a large fresh slice of cantaloupe from the garden is definitely a filling lunch. To wash everything down their white sangria is super refreshing. Wow! So impressed. This little cafe has been on my "to try" list for a long time. LONG time. Like years. For whatever reason, it hasn't happened. A few times in the past I was set to have dinner here and plans fell through or had to be changed. Yesterday, while returning from a weekend getaway at the Eastern shore, lunch time called and we pulled in. It was Sunday brunch so I was worried, but we had no issues, didn't even have to wait. There is a parking attendant outside who directs you where to park as it can get hectic in their little lot, but no issues. We were given the choice of patio, inside or out back under the trees. I chose inside but it was very loud, poor acoustics, so we moved to out back under the trees (where I got three bug bites!). The brunch menu has some great and interesting items I wanted to try (like a meatloaf BLT?!?), but the normal menu also had tons of things I'd like to try. I probably saw in all about 10-15 things on the menu I could eat. I like that it's local products and product as much as humanly possible and the staff were all super friendly. Lots of moonshine drinks on the menu and a healthy-sized cocktail menu (not for me tho I don't drink) but I went with a rose lavender lemonade from their parter juice shop and was not upset. The vibe of this place is awesome - I loved sitting out back under the trees watching the hustle and bustle of fresh items being brought in and out by staff from the buildings out back, watching the ducks and chickens in their pens, and hearing the wind blow through the trees. We chose the hummus platter to start with fresh focaccia and a small salad and it was GOOD. That was fresh-made hummus and had a great flavor and the bread was fresh and warm. Noms. I went with the tuna melt with salad and fruit and it was a huge portion of tuna on open-faced bread (two slices) piled high with cheese and tomato and a delicious aioli drizzle. Small side salad with cheese, almond slices and blueberries and a very light dressing was fresh and just right. My friend ordered the Hunter burger which was a combination of beef, venison and something else with cheese and a honey mustard mayo on top (yum) with fruit and side salad. It was gone in like 5 mins. Haha. I didn't look at dessert this time - too full - but I did poke my head in the very busy bakery and saw tons of great items I'd love to have tried if I hadn't just spent a weekend eating my way around Cape Charles. I can say with confidence that Leaping Lizard will now be our go-to brunch spot in VB. This cozy yet eclectic cafe is somewhat hidden off of Shore Drive, close to Chesapeake beach. Be sure to make a reservation in advance (they don't accept day-of) since this place fills up fast! They even had a parking attendant since the lot can get a bit clustered. We were greeted by the friendliest hostess who sat us out back; there is indoor seating, a covered patio, and outdoor tables for larger parties and those with pets. We brought our little dog and the staff was more than accommodating, and brought her a water. Behind the lime green cottage is a chicken coop, for farm fresh eggs, and a vegetable and herb garden where the restaurant sources their produce from. Everything tasted incredibly fresh! They also sell scratch-made baked goods, juices, and cocktails. The Noms: My fiancé and I split a sweet potato biscuit with ham to start. I am not one for ham but this was fresh, thinly sliced, and added a nice saltiness against the richness of the biscuit. The biscuit itself was homemade with a pillowy chew, and hints of honey and cinnamon. The fruity peach jam was a nice compliment! For our main course, I got the crab quiche. As good as all the other food looked, I don't think I will ever get anything else, it was incredible. A huge wedge of quiche was serve beside fresh melon and a salad with homemade sweet basil vinaigrette. The quiche had plenty of fresh spinach and lump crab meat, and a crispy, cheesy top, and was drizzled with an Old Bay aioli. The pie crust was flaky, buttery, and made in-house. Needless to say, I was sad when it was gone. My fiancé ordered the duck hash, and while not a duck eater myself, he said it was perfectly savory and full of unique flavor. This place is a clear gem. The 757 doesn't have many unique restaurants, but this is one of them. It was packed, but for two people, the wait wasn't long. The service is extremely friendly and attentive. The menu is very versatile and inexpensive. I think the most expensive dish is like $17. I got the frittata with scallops and shrimp. It was really good. I highly recommend. My friend got the breakfast burrito, which was enjoyed also. The portions were generous enough to fill those with a big appetite, or to take leftovers home for those with a smaller appetite. The atmosphere is very nice. No. 2: They do not honor their reservations. This restaurant closes at 3 on Sundays and takes reservations at 2:45, they rush you right through every step of the dining process and no one wants to pay for that. You want to review the menu, order and dine in a way that is relaxed and not rushed. The Leaping Lizard is a mess of an experience and if I could give it a zero I 100% without a doubt would. We sat outside around brunch today and everything was exquisite. The only con was the parking lot was completely full due to an event and I had a decent walk in a nearby neighborhood lol. Leaping Lizard has been consistently delicious for years - that says a lot about a place. I'm not sure what happens behind the scenes but the food was so fresh and delicious. We had blueberry biscuits the waiter suggested which were huge and homemade. We had a breakfast shot with it which was some sort of maple vodka along with butterscotch liquor, followed by fresh pressed OJ. It was tasty! I had a blueberry basil mojito which was beautiful, though not super strong (I like my drinks strong). For main course had the fresh salmon salad, with feta, candied pecans, arugula and fresh greens, zucchini and a delicious homemade vinaigrette. I really wish I had taken a photo of the menu because they change it seasonally and I want to try to recreate that vinaigrette. The salmon was perfectly pan seared and slightly crispy on the outside but still moist and flaky on the inside. The greens were fresh, the zucchini might've been pickles or something and they were lemony and delicious. Lastly, the outside seating area is just so great.
