I don't like waiting in line, for anything really, but the pastries at Last Call were worth the early wake-up on Saturday and the wait in line. The Kouign Amann and old fashioned caramel donut were both just unreal delicious, with the former having just the right amount of saltiness to compliment and balance the sweet caramel. I've savored the strawberry and cream scone all day, and I'm already hopeful to have another next weekend, this time with milky breakfast tea. Today, I settled for ice cold milk. With their sizable and open kitchen design, I hope the purveyors will someday offer small classes so we can know how to make these buns at home! Long story short: wait in the line. Simply the best. I'm a big lover of little treats. Admittedly, last call has pretty big treats. Alas I do not discriminate. I love a classic croissant and I landed here January 2023 on my quest to find the best in town. I succeeded there in that quest, but what I didn't know was how fantastic the rest of their offerings would be. My favorite is the morning bun currently, though my husband and I have also tried lots of their offerings including the oatmeal cream pie, coffee roll, cinnamon scroll, almond croissant, kouign amann, cookies, and probably other pastries escaping my mind at the moment. Not a single one has disappointed. I admittedly did not initially understand the price point but now that I've enjoyed their very fine (and substantial) offerings, I completely understand. As many before me have stated, they make what they make and when they sell out, that is it for the day. The shop is quaint and it's cool to see the open work space behind the counter. There's minimal seating but I have on occasion visited with friends and enjoyed a pastry inside. There's a coffee shop next door if you need a beverage. I can't wait to see what Last Call continues to do, and will be supporting them all the way. We're so lucky to have such an elite bakery here in town. After moving from a big city to Birmingham, I wasn't expecting to find a bakery that actually had unusual flavor options - so A for effort. However, the pastries are usually dry (coming from someone who enjoys dark bakes - so no, it isn't just "my preference") and the flavors are bland. We've been here multiple times (thinking maybe since they just opened it was a learning curve) and just don't find the wait to be worth it. We even ordered a cake a few months ago for a birthday, thinking it would be better since there's no lamination involved - and again, not impressed. Last Call makes the best croissants in all of birmingham and I will die on that hill! I can eat a croissant every day of my life and I have traveled all over the world, it's as close to or even just like a Parisian croissant. They have other amazing breads and pastries! They've got amazing service. The down side is they sell out QUICK. I'm talking they open at 7am by like 9/10am on a weekend, they're done. That tells you how good they are! I have been following Last Call on Instagram for a couple of weeks and finally got the time to try it out today. I had seen they always sell out so I made it a point to get there when they opened. Glad I made that choice. Got there about 15 minutes before they opened on Sunday and was first to line up about 3 minutes before 8. A line formed immediately behind me which usually is a great sign for a bakery. I got 4 different pastries. The butter croissant is one of the best croissants I have ever had. I visited here a few Saturdays ago with my wife, and we had an incredible experience. The display of pastries is beautiful and can be overwhelming. The staff was super knowledgeable about what they are making and guided us through each option. My wife chose the butter croissant which tasted like the ones we had on our honeymoon in France. Product is really good. I love the unique toppings.... But....line is ridiculous - sometimes 45mins or more. There will be 3 employees waiting around with one person checking out. The line wouldn't be so bad if the service at the end was better. The person checking is so slow that it feels intentional. Maybe it's performance art? There are no smiling faces behind the counter, just folks who seem upset they need to serve this large line of people. My birthday cake was made by Last Call this week and it was BEYOND exquisite. An olive oil cake with a delicious white icing. It was moist and sweet, but not overly sweet like many birthday cakes.
