I came to town to review the Birmingham Museum of Art's new exhibition, so I was especially pleased to walk in and see the work of one of the featured artists on the restaurant's walls. We stopped in for lunch and were met with excellent customer service and an open, airy, and well-lit atmosphere. The menu isn't overcrowded, which I appreciated, and our waitress knew it well enough to confidently walk us through it. We started with the okra chaat, fish dip, and shrimp toast. The okra chaat was spicy, crunchy, and good, though I thought the okra was sliced too thin. The fish dip was flavorful perfection. The shrimp toast had great flavor, but deep-frying it felt unnecessary; it left the dish greasy and heavy, with far more bread than topping. For my entrée, the chef was kind enough to serve the red snapper over the field pea and rice salad. The snapper was very good, but that field pea and rice salad was something to text home about--literally. (I texted my husband after two bites.) Bright, nice acidity, great snap to the peas, and just perfect for the season. And the cocktails? Bartender's kiss. I took a sip and immediately told my friend to taste. I've been wanting to try Bayonet for a while, and I finally made it in for lunch! What initially caught my attention was their clear espresso martini. I honestly wasn't sure it would actually be clear, so I was a little apprehensive when ordering. The bartender even warned me that it was clear, and I told her that was actually what brought me in. I'm glad I tried it--it was a very good espresso martini, and I'll definitely be back for another. I also really enjoyed the simplicity of the restaurant's decor. It felt clean, modern, and inviting. Even though Bayonet is an oyster and seafood restaurant, I appreciated that there wasn't a strong seafood or fish smell, which made the atmosphere even more pleasant. For food, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and order from the oyster bar. I selected four oysters from different regions: Murder Point (Alabama), Birthday Girl (Virginia), Aunt Dotty's (Massachusetts), and Eel Lake (Nova Scotia). The bartender was super attentive and willing to offer recommendations, which came in handy. In fact, she was the reason I decided to try the Aunt Dotty's ($3.75) and Eel Lake ($4) oysters, and I'm so glad I took her advice because they ended up being my favorites! Murder Point ($3) and Birthday Girl ($3.25)were probably my least favorites, although I did try them more "naked" to appreciate their natural flavors. I really enjoyed the Aunt Dotty's and Eel Lake oysters, especially with hot sauce and cocktail sauce. With such a wide variety available, I could see myself coming back several times and trying a different selection each visit. I also ordered the Shrimp Toast from the Happy Hour menu. Since I was outside the Happy Hour time frame, it was $16 instead of $12, but it was still well worth it. It was flavorful and different from the shrimp toast I've had at other local restaurants, and I would definitely recommend giving it a try. Overall, I had a great experience at Bayonet. The food, drinks, atmosphere, and attentive service made it a memorable visit, and I can see why the restaurant has received Michelin recognition. I was particularly interested in the double with cheese with swordfish bacon. How does a tuna burger with cheese work? Pretty well I'd say. Think of it like a suped up filet-o-fish on steroids! But I did really enjoy this burger with fries and garlic aioli. The okra chaat was unique. Field pea and rice salad was tasty, but not anything special. My husband told me that we had a reservation at Bayonet. I was immediately excited because I had heard great things about this restaurant and it would be our first time going. Neither of us are fans of raw oysters, so I was really interested in what we would order. MC waited on us and did a phenomenal job of recommendations of items that were not raw. I wanted to try the Tea'D Up drink. It was beautifully blended and absolutely delicious. For my meal, I ordered the scallop tostada. It was so fresh and flavorful. My husband ordered the Reuben made with swordfish. I had a bite of it and it was also very good. We actually saved room for dessert and tried the fried peach pie. I would describe it as a really good peach cobbler empanada. It was served with a small scoop of sour cream vanilla sorbet. I had a great dinner here and can't wait to try more of their menu when I return. Foodies (like myself) will enjoy this place, from the vibes to the details in decor, food, and service. And I express my thanks to my servers and bartenders, who were not only attentive in service, but also offered recommendations which led me to a great dining experience. In short, I had the following: -dry-aged Shima Ahi crudo ( flew in from Japan) -a Mordella sandwich, and -peach fried pie. My wine pairing for my dishes was a California Albariño, which was a great surprise. I'm now searching for this winemaker to add bottles to my cellar. Every dish I tried was my favorite in its own way. Each meal was well-balanced and highlighted the flavors of every ingredient. The mortadella sandwiches featured a playful twist with Cobia fish, and the house-made focaccia bread, where the mortadella and Cobia spread are nestled, was truly what focaccia dreams are made of. Plus the garlic aioli for the fries is money !!! And the peach fried hand pie was the perfect end to a great meal. The aromatics of caramelized glaze comes across like it might be super sweet. But when you bit into the flaky buttermilk pastry crust it gave it a warm, humble feeling with the perfectly diced peaches pie filling adding the right touch of sweetness. And as a special treat, this hand pie is paired with a sour cream-lemon sorbet which I didn't know I needed in my life that was refreshing. The peach fried pie is a seasonal dessert, so enjoy it while you can. Overall, the ambiance and music were spot on making it a vibe that you definitely want to come for dinner or just enjoy cocktails which looked really yummy( but that's for another time ). The unique decor, with a mix of midcentury meets fisherman lighting and a crowned octopus handles tap beer, was a lovely detail when you get to sit back and enjoy. Even the plateware where food sits on is crafted by a local Bham female artisan at Civil Stoneware, is a nice touch ( which I was obsessed with ). I hope your experience is as great as mine. Upon arriving, the dining room was a bit cool, so a light sweater might be a good idea. Our waitress was excellent--friendly, knowledgeable, and very familiar with the menu. She guided us through the oyster selection, and every variety we tried was fresh and tasty. The oysters were easily the highlight of the meal. The only downside was the exceptionally long wait between the oysters and our entrées. We ordered the snapper, tuna burger, and zucchini squash tart. All three dishes were well prepared and enjoyable, but none really stood out as particularly memorable. There aren't too many places in the world that can be called "genuinely impressive", but Bayonet simply cannot be placed into any other category. It was opened by a husband and wife couple, Chef Rob McDaniel and his wife Emily in 2025. As a James Beard Award nominated chef, there was good reason to expect a great meal even before the dinner. The presentation, creativity and focus on seasonality are standout features of Bayonet. Very bold dishes like the chive and caviar egg sandwich prove that the chef does not hesitate to go extreme. The Strawberry Wahoo was no less impressive, both in presentation and the genuinely unique combination. Staff are highly professional, bartenders Bradley and Miles are top notch pros of the industry. Can't believe it took us so long to try Bayonet! Overall, we were completely blown away. Every dish felt intentional and every bite was delicious. We had the oysters (the selection was unreal), the branzino, the tuna burger and the peas & carrots side dish. All incredible. But the real star of the show was the coconut cream pie. My husband and I came here for a date night, and the service was unbelievably disappointing. The hostess was kind and had our drinks out quickly, but our server, Barry, introduced himself and then completely ignored us for the next 15 minutes while he attended to every other table, including one that was seated after us and received appetizers before he ever came back to take our order. Outstanding experience! , Hostess saved our entire night, was incredibly friendly, and found the perfect solution by seating us at the raw bar. It ended up being the best seats in the house--we even got to watch the chef break down a massive opah fish. Our server, Barry, was excellent and took great care of us. We had a very good meal overall and would definitely come back. The highlight of the night was the oysters--they were absolutely phenomenal. I ordered a variety of New England and local oysters, and every single one was fresh and delicious. The service was very good overall, but there was one hiccup. We ordered one of the bluefin tuna dishes and were accidentally served a different one. Ironically, we really enjoyed what they brought us, so we didn't realize the mistake until the next day while looking over the menu again. Looking back, we probably should have caught it when the check came, but at a Michelin-recommended restaurant, I also don't expect to be served the wrong dish. The bread service was fine. The fries were seasoned perfectly, and the aioli was excellent. The grouper roulade was another standout, the sauce was incredibly flavorful and really made the dish. The panko red snapper was very fresh, but it was a little bland for my taste. We were celebrating a birthday, and the restaurant surprised us with a delicious little ice cream sandwich cake, which was a really thoughtful touch and a great way to end the meal. It felt rushed, I passed on ordering dessert for this reason. Timing went well with the exception of eating our meals at separate times. So the rush didn't seem warranted. A couple of the "burgers" and "reuben" and I had a fish (can't remember which) in a beurre blanc sauce. We tried the coconut creme pie and a lemon meringue for dessert. It was all quite good. As you enter this restaurant, you feel calm. The room's wide windows and beautiful decor create a fantastic vibe. We went for happy hour, which is a great deal - but get there early, it ends at 5. I visited for lunch and must say from the moment you walk in the space is very welcoming, very well decorated. There was no issue with being seated. The service was excellent from beginning to end. I ordered the crispy fish sandwich. I will never eat another fast food fish sandwich after having a fresh one. The fish was very fresh. The breading was a bit salted to my taste but it wasn't overpowering. I'm not big on oysters but I enjoy trying the Michelin Guide restaurants and wanted to give this one a try. The menu is limited, if you love raw Oysters this place has them. If you don't as I don't, you came to the wrong place. We order a large appetizer that had Oysters, Shrimp, mussels and a fish dip. Fresh yes, not to any of our tastes with the exception of my adult daughter who loves Oysters. The fish entry was both small and very expensive. I found it tasteless. My son liked the Fish burger and fries. The drinks were overpriced but fun to have your martini made table side. The deserts were the only highlight with a Coconut Cream Pie which I went back a week later to get two to go. Conclusion, Quality and service good; food underwhelming and needs some zip to it. Make sure to book a reservation well in advance for this place! This restaurant was booked for the weekend, so we ended up sitting at the bar, which I actually still really liked. We got The Situation and fries and it was really good. I love how the dish is prepared so that you can easily split it with a friend. Because we sat at the bar, we were able to talk to the cooks behind the transparent screen who made our seafood dishes. It was cool to see them make it in front of us (if you are sitting at the bar)! They answered questions we had about the dish. The shrimp cocktail sauce was unreal - my mouth just salivates just thinking about it. The mussels were one of my favorites. Served raw with a spicy-sweet Thai cucumber and coconut sauce, it was light, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Next up was the Swordfish Reuben, which we shared. The fish was cooked perfectly, layered on toasted rye with triple crown and caraway slaw. The thin, crispy fries were a perfect side. For dessert, I couldn't resist trying the coconut pie--even though our server recommended the olive oil lemon ice cream. Wish I'd listened! This was our second experience at this fabulous new seafood restaurant opened by Chef Rob McDaniel, located right next to his fabulous, Helen! The service was impeccable and our server was incredibly knowledgeable. I enjoyed my first table side martini. Wow! Impressive and delicious!! We began with shareable plates including the Wahoo Beet Salad, a variety of gulf oysters on the half shell, my favorite was the Murder Point oysters. We also enjoyed the Royal Red Taquitos. We went with a couple of dozen of 7 or 8 types of oysters. My favorites were from the NE and Atlantic up to PEI, while my wife loved the Pacific NW ones. Birmingham's newest seafood, up*scale,* restaurant. If you don't want seafood specifically, go to Helen, same chef's restaurant next door. Bayonet is exclusively seafood. Oysters are served with hot sauce and some type of vinegar in little dropper bottles. I had never seen this before! So cool and gives you more control over what you're putting on your oyster. The shaved horseradish was pretty mild for my taste, but delicious nonetheless. I came on their first Friday night open and was amazed by the turn-out and refinement of the overall service. The wine list is short but honestly made me realize that I do not want that many options. Only three red wine options, but seafood pairs with white. I had the trout entree and the lemony butter on top was to die for, and kale on the side was perfectly tart and moist and all the things. My buddy and I ended the meal with the pistachio cake. It's sitting on a bed of tart lemon cream and topped with a scoop of ice cream that perfectly breaks the tartness. The restaurant itself has bar seating in front of the oyster shuckers and along the bar. Seating is pretty limited, definitely smaller than Automatic Seafood, the oyster competition in town. But, it's all delicious. I will be back and order the fries to follow up the oysters, they smelled so good wafting over from the other tables! read more

Wow, simply wow. Bayonet has gotten a lot of hype over the past few months, and I have to say it is well deserved. From the moment you walk in the servers are friendly, helpful, and cater to your every wish! The space is beautiful and tastefully decorated. Started with the Situation, a stunning mixed platter of seafood offerings, all of which were fresh, delightful, and so so flavorful. Had the Tuna Smash burger which does not make you miss beef at all. Would suggest this to people who avoid beef for cultural or health reasons, because it's delicious! Also tried the Ora King Salmon, which was so fresh and tasty. Ended the night with the chocolate tarte, which had the most perfectly balanced salty crust. If you're looking for a spot to celebrate a special occasion, this is it! read more

New restaurant alert!! Some of the freshest seafood I have ever tasted. This place is amazing. The decor is next level. Miami vibes in downtown Bham. The entire staff was out standing. We had the gin martini that was made at our table. Definitely worth the price. The desert was outstanding, light, fluffy, not over powering with sugar. Goes perfectly with the entire menu. The snapper was delicious and packed with a lot of great flavors. Hands down my favorite seafood restaurant. We will be spending a lot of time in Bayonet this summer. read more
