Home-run French in downtown Birmingham. I came here with a couple of my friends for a summer evening dinner out on the patio. We thoroughly toured the list of French wines, imbibed on a couple of their yummy cocktails (my friend loves the "Last Word"). Service was, of course, fantastic. The location is one of the most quaint and vibey in town (Morris Ave) and the food is certainly up to snuff. We split the famous potato appetizer and I had the half chicken for entree. This was my first time to visit La Fete. The location is great. Right on the historic Morris Avenue next to Alabama Peanut Co. and in front of Pilcrow and Cayo Coco Rum Bar. We were able to make a reservation for inside dining which I liked because it was a hot June Alabama day, but I would have preferred outside because it was so loud inside, there was no sound suppression, and the tables were very close together. The outside patio was nice and covered. Next time I will request to sit outside. We started with the sourdough bread which I highly recommend! There was enough pieces to have one while you waited for your dinner, and to save one to eat with your dinner. My husband ordered the deviled eggs and really enjoyed them. For our entree, we shared the roasted chicken. It was a half chicken with lemon, garlic, shallots and potato gratin. It was plenty for both of us. We even had leftovers. This is probably because of the appetizers and we had stopped for drinks at Cayo Coco before dinner. We usually skip dessert, but my husband really wanted to try the chocolate custard, bittersweet chocolate custard with chantilly cream. The presentation was beautiful. I had a couple of bites and it also tasted amazing. Our waiter recommended a dessert wine that paired with the custard. He let us try a couple of sips, and the sweet fruitiness really made a difference. The service was amazing. We will definitely be back. read more

Came here while on business travel. The place is really nice with both lovely indoor and outdoor spaces. The staff was super friendly and helpful. A lot of items were made with seed oils, which was a little limiting, but they made accommodations so we still ended up having a great meal. I had the filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked, with a side salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice. (For some weird reason, their Caesar salad was made with seed oil.) Overall, a great place to try. If you are gluten-free, you should have plenty of options. If you are seed oil-free, then the menu becomes a bit more limiting but still doable. read more

We don't get out much anymore but when we do we want to try the best of the best. The reviews for La Fete did not disappoint! I started off with a lemon cello spritz and it was delicious. For our app we got the potato pave the crisp was perfection and honestly could've eaten three servings. Glad I saved room for the crab cake because it was one of the best I've ever had. I've never had it paired with green beans but was pleasantly surprised!! Last but not least, our server was incredible. He was very attentive and helped us newbies with a very French menu. Came here for a solo dinner and really enjoyed the ambiance, which reminded me of French cafe culture in the best way. I would definitely revisit and try different dishes, as it was a great overall experience. I received excellent service at the bar, where the bartender provided great recommendations for their French wines, all of which I found were "Très magnifique". I also learned about new wines I look forward to exploring back home. For dinner, I opted for the smaller plates, including: - the potato pave with caviar - steak tartare - chocolate custard. My favorite dish was by far the potato pave with caviar. The steak tartare was the most flavorful I've had, with its own twist and a hint of chili to add a kick to the palate. I enjoyed the waffle fries, which were super crispy, but I found them way too salty after a while. At times, the saltiness competed with the flavors of the tartare, though it might be a Birmingham thing with really salty fries. I finished my meal with a cappuccino and the chocolate custard, which was very smooth and creamy. Great way to wrap up a great meal. First time here for dinner and it was amazing! Only con is how small the restaurant is and how loud it got. Food was 10/10! Potato pave was my Fav appetizer! Steak tartare was still excellent, but more of a carby Barbie myself! The fish was like butter! It was so yum! Good lemon and cooked perfectly! HOLY COW. Amber and I ended up here for Saturday brunch. We were seated immediately and blown away by how cute/nice the interior design was. The staff were all so wonderful. The hostess was super nice. Our server was amazing. The bartender, who humored me when I approached about a drink he was making. Not only did he let me sample it, he gave me the extra while making me a fresh one! We had their daily pastry, a peach croissant and Country Pate to start. The pastry was AMAZING. The Pate was also quite good. Amber even ate some! She had the Croque Forestier, vegetarian version with mushrooms in lieu of ham. I had their burger and frites. Holy cow! Both were so dang good! Morris Avenue - historic in itself. Very small restaurant but personable. I can see the inspiration behind French cuisine and service and it was well done! At some points though the waiters/waitresses were in tight quarters between chairs/tables. Brioche rolls handsdown stole the show! We knew the honey and butter couldn't be passed up and were so happy we took up the opportunity. Rolls had previously ran out earlier in the afternoon according to our waitress. We were served complimentary champagne as part of our second anniversary celebration. Hubby got the burger which was not pictured but the snapper en papilotte was spectacular, I didn't want the flavors to end! The cheeseburger was enjoyed. Fair warning if you do not like crispy waffle fries, do not ask to sub them for their regular frites. The waffle fries were seasoned well but not fluffy, very light. The frites on the other hand had better substance and presentation. Staff was very helpful in providing us both as the waffle fries were not what we were expecting. This was our first time here, and will most likely be our last. Things went wrong from the moment we sat down, which should have been an indicator of a bad night. I selected to come here to celebrate my husband's bday because I've heard some wonderful things about the place, plus it's one of the few restaurants open on a Sunday night in Bham. When we were greeted, it was noted that we were there celebrating a birthday, and that we would get some bubbly to celebrate. That drink never came. That was disappointing. Our waiter was super occupied with other tables (maybe those drinking more alcohol) so there were many extended times that we were just sitting there (waiting to order, waiting for dirty plates to be cleared, etc). The place was packed and we were seated very close to our neighboring tables - so close we could hear all of their conversations. Now, onto the good: the food! We ordered the potato pave and the charcuterie as an appetizer. We were impressed with both of those, and ventured out trying the pate and were pleasantly surprised with how good it was! We were hm self pretty full after the appetizers but we had ordered two entrees so we were able to sample those before asking for them to be boxed up for another meal. My husband got the chicken and potatoes and those were amazing - super flavorful and tender and garlicky - I'd get these again! I got the burger and fries and it was good - the sauce was good and was good to dip the shoe string fries in! We did not get dessert as we had been sitting there for almost two hours already. Came here with some friends for dinner, while in town. We had a really great experience with delicious food and good service. The potato pavé is a MUST. It is incredibly delicious. I marveled at how much work went into this simple dish. If you are a fan of charcuterie, definitely get it. I loved the house-smoked bratwurst so much, I'm still dreaming about it. The chicken liver mousse and country pâte were also solid. Beef Tartare was exceptionally tasty, and the lattice potato chips were such an ideal accompaniment, adding another level of saltiness and crunch. I also shared the trout with a friend -- perfectly cooked and great seasonings. The only thing I was slightly disappointed by was the escargot. Its flavor was lacking. Perhaps a touch more salt would have livened it up. My friends also had dessert, and the profiteroles are served with tableside ganache service. All in all, a very enjoyable meal indeed. read more

Felt like we were brunching at a cute little cafe in France! We loved everything here down to the plates and glassware. I'd highly suggest a reservation, as it was packed and on the smaller side. The interior is incredibly picturesque and the perfect backdrop for cute brunch photos. We talked about the famous potato pave on the way there and it more than lived up to the hype. Thinly sliced potatoes in a little stack and crispy on the outside, served with whipped ranch ($12). Absolutely phenomenal. If you only get one thing, let it be this. The charcuterie plate was perfect to snack on while we waited for entrees ($20). Our entrees took a little while to come out (we were fine and our waiter noticed before we did) but brought us the most delicious, warm, fluffy bread with honey butter while we waited. I got the crab cake with French green beans, beurre blanc, and an herb salad. The pickled onions added a nice acid component and the beurre blanc sauce was perfectly creamy and savory ($28). Julia got the croissant croque forestier and said the croissant was perfectly flaky and mushrooms were super creamy. Would def get again!($18) She also got a Caesar salad as a starter and loved all of the grated ossau iraty (semi-firm aged sheep's milk cheese) and garlic bread crumbs ($14). We were celebrating her birthday and they also gave us rosé to start. I enjoyed mimosas (served in a thin rimmed glass) and she got a Bloody Mary. There is a paid parking lot close by so it wasn't a huge issue but I do hate paying for parking. There were parallel spots but all were taken up. This was the perfect girlie brunch spot! I have to admit I am a little baffled by the Michelin recommendation. I was really looking forward to trying La Fête and was completely underwhelmed and unimpressed. We had the escargot and the potato pave - both very good, but nothing extraordinary. Two of us had burgers, both ordered medium, and they both came out very, very well done. I thought the taste was... okay. I'm a big sauce person and didn't care for any of the condiments. The crab cake was good, but again, not great. Our server was good - attentive, not annoying. The patio chairs are probably the most uncomfortable chairs I've ever sat in in my life. Awful. Idk, this was a big miss for us, and we left very disappointed. read more

I had really high expectations for this visit. I had dined here once a few years ago and was excited to come back after seeing the restaurant recognized in the Michelin Guide. The atmosphere was wonderful, and I was genuinely looking forward to the experience. I ordered the steak frites. While the fries were outstanding, the rest of the meal was incredibly disappointing. My guest ordered the chicken. Again, the potatoes were excellent, but unfortunately the chicken was overcooked as well. I ordered my steak medium rare, but it arrived overcooked. It took about 10 minutes before our server came by to check on our food, so by then my meal had already been sitting for quite a while. The steak was sent back, but instead of preparing a new one, they simply cooked the same steak longer, making it borderline well done. The third steak was still overcooked, but after waiting nearly 35 minutes, I gave up on getting it prepared correctly. By that point, my guest had already finished her meal before I was able to eat. When the bill came, my guest politely asked if my meal could be discounted since we had waited so long and it still wasn't cooked correctly. The server immediately seemed annoyed and reluctantly adjusted the bill. After that, he never came back to our table. Mistakes happen, and I understand that not every dish comes out perfectly the first time. What was most disappointing was how the situation was handled. Between the repeated overcooked steak, the overcooked chicken, the long wait, and the server's attitude, the experience fell far short of what I expected. It's unfortunate because the ambiance was lovely and I truly wanted to enjoy my return visit. Unfortunately, I won't be returning. read more

On this special occasion my companion and I decided to try La Fête that clearly delivered on every level--perfect atmosphere, impeccable service, and food that paired beautifully with those lovely Bordeaux and Sauvignon Blanc wines. The Charcuterie plate, especially the Chicken Liver Mousse Pâté, the Country Pâté made with pistachios & apricots, and all those wonderful accompaniments like pickled walnuts, multiple types of olives, figs, and cornichon pickles with house made breads and crackers has me craving it again promising a return. La Fête was a delightful cafe for brunch, and I can see why folks are so enthusiastic about it. It wasn't too busy when we arrived for our reservation, but it filled up quickly inside (there are outdoor tables too). Our jovial server made me feel welcome as a La Fête first-timer. We started with the potato pave ($12), a must have appetizer. It was recommended to peel off the layers and dip them into the ranch dip. This was tricky but even if you just cut the layers with your fork and knife, it was fine! The croissant croque madame ($18) was impressive to look at and to eat. The croissant was a crunchy stunner! I was pleasantly surprised that there was a salad included as well. We wrapped up brunch with the chocolate mousse ($12), another smashing dish. Heaven! Save room for this and order one for each person since you won't want to share. The tables were a little close together (had some friendly exchanges with our table neighbors about the food) and it was a tad loud, but it wasn't a huge deal. The bathroom wallpaper was lovely. After reading numerous posts about La Fete my wife and I decided to try it this evening. 09/20/2025. It is small but very nice. It certainly lives up to its bistro theme with out being pretentious. Our hostess was very nice and friendly. We had reservations so we were seated right away. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The ambiance was great! The menu selection was limited but with good options. Prices were reasonable. We ordered 2 appetizers: Potato Pave and the Escargot. The potatoes were good. However the Escargot was lukewarm! We then ordered the Roasted Half Chicken for my wife and I had the cheeseburger with fries. My wife's chicken was good. I ordered the cheeseburger medium well and it came a perfect medium rare. I sent it back. My wife had 1 glass of wine and I ordered a Sprite. The Sprite came in a 6 ounce glass filled with ice. No problem. The waiter asked if I wanted another and I accepted. Same glass same amount of ice. When the bill came I was charged $3.00 per glass. So I paid $6.00 for less than 8 ounces of soft drink. This was our first time eating here. There are other places in the Metro area that we will try before we consider eating here again. We would rate our experience as just ok for this particular evening. read more

Well this was not a good start to my time in Birmingham. Stopped in here for dinner after driving from Atlanta excited for a good meal and some carrot cake. While I arrived towards the end of the night as soon as I walked in I asked "can I still order food? And if so can I eat at the bar" It was an absolute yes to both not even a maybe. I sit down and order a burger medium and carrot cake. After about 15 mins the only food that went out was a few desserts. A carrot cake and 2 other items. After a total of about 23 mins my burger came out. I ordered medium and the burger was well done. I ordered extra crispy fries and those weren't even hot. I tell the bartender and he sends it back. Confirms it's over cooked. I asked if they could send a few fries out while I wait and the carrot cake. He informs me now they don't have carrot cake almost 25-30 mins later!!!! He brings out the fries which had zero salt and I had to ask for some. And it was maybe 1/3 what they sent out on the original plate so I'm assuming the burger will come with the rest. Right? Wrong. After a total of 45 mins I finally received the burger. Just a single burger on a side plate. So I'm thinking ok he's going to do something on the bill because this is absurd considering they had no other tickets to make. Welp wrong again. So 45 mins for a burger that was originally cooked wrong with cold fries, then a fraction sized portion, and failed to enter the dessert resulting in not getting what I actually went for. I guess the shots they were taking in the mean time had them off their game but this was absolutely a horrible experience and not worth the visit. Other wise it's a nice space, and if the food was good it could be a decent time. read more

My fiance and I have been 3 times now. This is hands down the BEST restaurant in Birmingham. First time we went, the food was not only delicious but the service was incredible. There was a delay in getting us our entrees but they made it up with dessert and champagne on the house. We went for a third time last night and had the pleasure of meeting the owner and chef Kristen. We were 25 minutes early to our reservation so decided to grab a drink at the bar to wait for the table. She brought us the potato pave on the house for us to snack on as we waited. Truly so incredible, the formage plate, the mussels frites, and snapper crudo were amazing. Their patio outside was truly so lovely. Side note: if you're a wine drinker, highly recommend this place. The Sommelier is so well spoken and experienced and picks out all the wines on the menu. He genuinely recommends wines that are within the budget and are delicious and go with what you are ordering. Recently went to the essential and was sad to see the croque madame was no longer on the menu - the owner actually commented for me to come try to croque madame at La fête! Tried La Fête when they initially opened at their old location and was not impressed, but have heard great things since then so decided to try again for a special occasion. We made reservations and when we arrived, there was a mix-up with our table - the host said something along the lines of someone had already been seated under our reservation. Weird, but some of our party was still on the way, and we were seated 15 minutes after our reservation time. Not a big deal. Onto food. Specifically came for the croque madame. Imagine our disappointment when they let us know that they're out of croissants. A French restaurant that runs out of croissants..... very disappointing. Bar La fete still gets 4 stars because the rest of the food was actually quite good. The stars of the show were the escargots and the potato pave. Also enjoyed the waffle sandwhich. Bar la fête attempts to capture a little bit of Paris in AL. Will someday try to come back to try the croque madame. read more
