They take absolute care and pride in everything--even the eggs were extra tasty and their breakfast sandwiches....yum. Most of the pastries are made with sourdough (except danishes, cookies, muffins). And they are top notch. Tender, buttery, flavorful, no skimping on anything. Just plain delicious. Bought more to save for afternoon coffee. The Friday offerings of challah, rye, and bagels are not sourdough but made with great care--even the bagels are made using tangzhong and cold proofed for 48 hours. Even those who do not emote about food and those carefully counting macros and calories in our family were impressed, vocal, and eagerly finishing off all of the offerings, sweet and savory. Birmingham has some very nice bakeries now. A marked improvement over a decade ago. I rarely frequent these places because I am on a perpetual diet. However, I made an exception this last Saturday. I am so happy I did. They improved some of the breakfast choices. One in particular is the now have "REAL" bagels. Folks I know Bagels and this was the BEST bagel I have ever gotten in Birmingham. Pizza pie for the win today! Margherita is unbelievably delicious with huge slices of tomato, flavorful sauce, just the right amount of cheese and basil. Fancy pork belly with pineapple pizza was also tasty (but I mainly eat veggies). They took my order right away and brought it out quickly. It was nice and quiet and cool. Soft music playing. OH. AND. Why do I not come here more?! I always ask myself this everytime I leave BB!! It's great! My recent visit was quite enjoyable. I had their pizza lunch special $9 for two slices of yummy pizza. I loooooved the sloss furnace sausage so bad! It has conecuh sausage on it and it was fantastic! I also had a veggie slice, it was fine but me & my tastebuds enjoyed sloss furnace sausage best. Goodness! I had water to drink and eventually a latte since I stuck around to do a little work. They also have a few wines and beers to enjoy. The back section I was sitting in was a little cold but the main seating area is really warm & comfortable. I do wish they had more electrical plugs in the main seating area for those that are working on a laptop. Parking during the week WILL be a problem. Just telling you! I eventually found a free 2 hour spot. Be patient if plan to visit during the week but it's definitely worth circling the block a few times. read more

Stopped by here with some friends for some Lunch. What a treat!! I usually stop by and grab breads, but their lunch is worth grabbing. Their sandwiches and pizzas are delish!! They usually have different pizzas each day. So check their website menu to check the specials. My phone died and I couldn't grab a menu pic. My favorite is the pesto chicken pizza. I also love the Alabama Bird sandwich. Additionally, they have good tomato soup and grilled cheese. They also serve breakfast and their pepper Parmesan bread is always a hit. Breakfast sandwich, recommended by one of the people behind the counter, was not even enjoyable - 80% bread, a good amount of bacon, but the cheese and egg didn't cover half the sandwich -- sooo dry. There was also a server who I observed deliver food to several tables and take a handful of counter orders, all without hardly a word and nothing close to a smile. Where do I start?! Honestly I didn't have high expectations when I arrived here. It seemed more like a neighborhood spot that people frequented not particularly because it was good but because it was spacious, available, and easy to get to. Well I was wrong. While insider is spacious and cozy they are absolutely worth the visit for both locals and outsiders. I arrived early in the morning and the case was fully stocked and the cashier was very friendly and helpful. He answered all my questions, even obvious ones, and never seemed disgruntled or bothered. I ordered two cookies, the bacon egg and cheese sour dough breakfast "focaccia " , and a coffee. Coffee was just what I needed to start my morning. Fresh, hot, and soothing. Then the pastries. I got the oatmeal raisin cookie and the pumpkin cheesecake. Both were out of this world. Soft, chewy inside, slight crunch to the edge, and full of flavor. Probably 2 of the best cookies I've had. The bacon egg and cheese sour dough was warm which was nice, well seasoned, perfect bready chew while being airy. It was an all around winner for me. I actually went back later that day for seconds but only got a cookie as they were low on offerings right before closing. Again this place is well worth a visit. Nothing in the case is the wrong choice and while this isn't some modern, sleek, 2025 looking bakery they invest the time and effort in to making every single offering tasty and worth your money. Just found this place. Excellent food and pastries. Had the toast with peanut butter and bananas and granola with milk. Best granola we have ever had. Also had sandwich and soup.... Both were excellent. The atmosphere is also were quaint and relaxing. The only negative was the girl that took our order had an attitude like you were bothering her. I see many local restaurants and coffee shops carry bread and other baked goods from bhm Breadworks but I'd never been to their actual establishment. It's spacious with ample indoor and outdoor seating, although parking can sometimes pose an annoyance. I was actually surprised by the limited number of fresh baked goods they had available--only about 5 or 6 choices, but maybe that's because I envisioned a spread. They did have the same number of loaves to purchase and I went around lunchtime so maybe many of the items were already gone. I opted to have lunch, so I ordered the Ham and Gruyere sandwich (added onions of course) and switched the popcorn for the tomato soup. The sandwich was delicious and they don't skim on the meat. The sourdough bread was toasted and had a great combination of crunch with softness. I was let down by the soup. Quite bland. I also thought that the tables could use some cleaning, perhaps a once over. If I'm in the area, I would definitely stop by again although I probably wouldn't go out of my way. Driving through town on a road trip, wanting a tasty breakfast before leaving town. I am so glad I stopped in! Parking was easy in the street out front at 8:30am on this Thursday morning. The rower had several tables inside for dining or work (WiFi was available). Outside seating was available out back as well. The menu online matched the menu on store if you like to plan ahead. The staff were super helpful and knowledgeable about the pastries and flavors! Per their recommendation I got an almond croissant and cheese danish with fresh strawberry jam on top. I also ordered a lavender honey latte and a loaf of sourdough to go. The latte paired with the pastries was exactly the treat I needed! It was savory and sweet and just the right amount of food to fill me up and then some. I sorta pulled my own Bethany Frankel spree of trying every chicken salad in town to determine who is the best, and after extensive research I determined that Birmingham Breadworks has the best chicken salad in town. What makes it the best? The chicken is chopped and shredded but not overly so that there are still distinguishable pieces of chicken, but small enough that there are no large or dry pieces of chicken. The chicken salad also isn't sugary sweet like at a lot of places with grapes and nuts, instead it has a slight kick imparted from the use of finely chopped onions and a pleasant flavor from an inclusion of herbs. There is also a slight tanginess from the quality mayo they must use. It goes great with their bread as well, so be sure to order the Chicken Lickin' sandwich. They have tubs of the salad itself in the fridge which is great to take home for crackers snacking. Their spicy pimento cheese and their egg salad are also delightful. read more

There is a good menu with a variety of options. I had a nice caramel macchiato. It was hot and creamy, but didn't burn my mouth, lol. The flavors were just right. My pimento cheese toast was two large slices with warm creamy pimento cheese. It had just enough spice to make it flavorful. I was surprised at the large serving! One of the coldest days of Birmingham winter Mom and I had a craving for croissants. Had to take a long way because the hill on Pawnee was iced over. There were 5-6 cars that seemed to have slid and got stuck. Even my Michigan 4-wheel suv wasn't going to make it. Had to back track to Clairmont. As I drove up/down Clairmont I understood why the HAM shuts down when there's a hard freeze. As I'm approaching the Breadworks, it dawns on me that they might not be open. I see a delivery being made from a distance and though it was quick I knew they were open or was it left at the door. Luck was on my side today. They did not have any plain croissants so I bought ham/cheese ones and of course chocolate. I'm so glad I got the ham & cheese croissants. They were delicious.
