This donut shop was a surprise stop after our walking tour of the Rotary Trail. A very cute donut shop with retro diner vibes and friendly staff. I really wanted to like this place because the donuts are good...if you can get what you order. First off the prices are very expensive, which is fine is you are getting something gourmet, but these in no way justify the price. The Original glazed are great for a $1, but $5 for an apple fritter?? Too much...or maybe it was worth it, I'll never know because even though there were two sitting there when I ordered, they gave them to someone else. I had three different types taken from my order, chocolate glazed (shame on you for running out of that) Strawberry glazed, and the apple fritter. Note to Hero, box them up while you are ordering like every other Donut place. A customer that comes into your place should not be second fiddle to a drive in order or an online order. Worse yet, since I did not get the 12 donuts I had ordered, I added a salted maple..:I only received 8...I asked for a credit to my card which I did not receive even though they showed me a "voided" receipt with no evidence of a credit, which I foolishly believed them. So eight donuts, four of which were $1, two coffees, a side of bacon and an egg white bowl cost $63!! So they stole at least $16 from me....and I had to wait 10 minutes for the donuts I did get, and 20 minutes for the egg bowl. Not a well run place at all. YMMV but be prepared to not get what you order. read more

This is definitely one of those moments where I wish I could do three and a half stars. I feel bad doing three but I just don't think this was worth four and the service & that alone is the reason for my rating. My dad had already come here once and wanted to come back. We stopped in for breakfast. There wasn't anyone in front of us so we figured it would be quick but we were very incorrect. We ordered three meals (with one to go), a coffee, and a half dozen donuts. Didn't feel like a huge order. After a few minutes the girl who was at the register brought us some coupons for a free burger next time, but we don't live here so they won't do us any good, and she didn't say why she was giving them just handed them to us? About twenty minutes later we decided to go ask what was going on... they said it was coming. Twenty minutes after that (45 ish minutes total) my dad finally got up and pushed harder. Our food, which apparently was just sitting under heat lamps because there was no one to bring it out, magically appeared but by this point we had somewhere to be so I took mine to go. The food itself was good. The loaded hash browns I got had tons of flavor & spice. My iced latte was delicious. The vanilla donut I had was fluffy. Wonderful ambience, great location, and even more amazing food. The brunch has a bit of a wait time especially on weekends but it is well worth it. The breakfast sandwich is anything but ordinary- a fresh kolache bun and real scrambled eggs. By a surprising turn of events, I would recommend the fried chicken sandwich. I'm usually not a fan of them in the morning but it was just so fresh and tasty! The seasoning and sauce are tangy and a wonderful hot meal in the morning. Of course the donuts can't be beat either- no frills baked fresh daily, perfect with a hot Americano. I will be returning and adding Hero to my regular breakfast rotation. read more

We were told how good this place was by locals. We tried it based on their recommendations. Doughnuts were good but not the best I have ever had. I ordered a crunchy chicken sandwich and the others with me got burgers. Chicken sandwich was okay and the burger review was about the same. Service was just okay. Decorations were very similar to a Krispy Crème shop. They did have a bar area but it was earlier in the morning so no one was working it. I am not sure if it is open later in the day or not. They did have coke product which is always an added star for us. There are better burger and andwhich stops in BHam so I would suggest something else than Hero for Lunch. One comment is they do tend to pack on the icing and they can run a little too sweet, so maybe share if you're sensitive! But what I think is very underrated about this spot is their food options. I got the classic burger with fries and everything was perfect. The burger has house made pickles that has a little spice in it but not hot. Perfect balance. I went to hero for brunch, and it was not disappointing! Off of their "Breakfast Plates" side of the menu, I got the Loaded Hashbrowns. The combination of sauces and jam may seem a little odd, but they pair very well together with the hashbrowns, onions, egg, and jalapeños for a satisfying and savory taste. The hashbrowns come in cubes, and they were served warm and crispy. The meal was filling and set at a reasonable price. Even though it was a warm summer day, the well shaded outdoor seating with generous number of ceiling fans made it not only bearable, but enough to enjoy hot food on a hot day! Totally disappointing. Will's pick was an almond joy donut. So delicious!!! Coconut / toasted almonds /chocolate- all of these ingredients made me smile!! Hero's donuts literally saved the day when I was at a festival this weekend. I'm already a fan of their creatively, fun donuts and donut holes, but I got a chance to try their savory options as well. The cheeseburger was thick and topped with ketchup, mustard, and pickles (my fav ). I love Hero's for so many reasons. From the doughnuts, to the sandwiches, to the plates, Hero serves the highest quality food bar none. It is also very apparent that Hero is not scared to try new and exciting ideas, which translate into amazing products. I am frequently visiting the location on 1st, but I have had wonderful experiences at both locations. The staff has been kind, patient, and helpful on a constant basis. The only real downsides of Hero is the fact that parking and seating are suboptimal in both locations. Prices are also pretty high here, but I do understand that they are trying to put out the highest quality possible. The online ordering system is super fluent, but I would be weary of the fact that doughnut availability isn't always accurate. Going inside is the only way to know what doughnuts they actually have and will prevent you from getting faked out. To wrap it up, Hero makes incredible food. Stopped by this place after our bike ride on the new railroad park trail. I mean what better way to blow those calories you just burned off... right???? Well we stopped in about 1pmish... they were out of a lot of doughnuts. They had one chocolate, a few iced with sprinkles, 1 glazed, about 6 strawberry... and a gray full of bread pudding doughnuts. I came here after my run around railroad park to have brunch with a friend. This was my first time coming, and experience was amazing! The nice man, who took my order, had such a radiant personality! I ordered the power plate which came with two eggs, chicken, tomatoes, and avocado. I hate chicken, but this chicken was very well, seasoned and so soft. Everything on the plate was seasoned generously and tasted amazing. I ordered a mocha latte, which was also good, but I am not a coffee fan (I just needed the caffeine). My friend ordered a burger with Jaminet and it looked amazing, but I was not in the mood to have a bite. It came with seasonal fruits, which were apples, strawberry, berries, and pineapples.
