This donut shop was a surprise stop after our walking tour of the Rotary Trail. A very cute donut shop with retro diner vibes and friendly staff. We ordered a maple sea salt and apple cider donut along with some little mini sidekicks to split among our group. The maple sea salt was my favorite of the bunch. Glad we were able to grab some yummy treats while visiting downtown Birmingham!

Apple fritter, iced latte

The apple fritter was amazing, definitely consider grabbing it if your stopping inside. The service left a little to be desired, no one greeted us when we walked in. But hey it's a donut shop, overall I would go again and probably will be back there soon!

This is definitely one of those moments where I wish I could do three and a half stars. I feel bad doing three but I just don't think this was worth four and the service & that alone is the reason for my rating. My dad had already come here once and wanted to come back. We stopped in for breakfast. There wasn't anyone in front of us so we figured it would be quick but we were very incorrect. We ordered three meals (with one to go), a coffee, and a half dozen donuts. Didn't feel like a huge order. After a few minutes the girl who was at the register brought us some coupons for a free burger next time, but we don't live here so they won't do us any good, and she didn't say why she was giving them just handed them to us? About twenty minutes later we decided to go ask what was going on... they said it was coming. Twenty minutes after that (45 ish minutes total) my dad finally got up and pushed harder. Our food, which apparently was just sitting under heat lamps because there was no one to bring it out, magically appeared but by this point we had somewhere to be so I took mine to go. The food itself was good. The loaded hash browns I got had tons of flavor & spice. My iced latte was delicious. The vanilla donut I had was fluffy. Just so frustrating that no one working here had any clue what was going on.

The staff is super nice and friendly. Great casual atmosphere to sit and get some work done. The apple pie donut was delicious with a generous amount of apple pie filling. The apple fritter had great flavor as well. The kolache was a generous size and tasted great heated up.

Wonderful ambience, great location, and even more amazing food. The brunch has a bit of a wait time especially on weekends but it is well worth it. The breakfast sandwich is anything but ordinary- a fresh kolache bun and real scrambled eggs. By a surprising turn of events, I would recommend the fried chicken sandwich. I'm usually not a fan of them in the morning but it was just so fresh and tasty! The seasoning and sauce are tangy and a wonderful hot meal in the morning. Of course the donuts can't be beat either- no frills baked fresh daily, perfect with a hot Americano. I will be returning and adding Hero to my regular breakfast rotation.

This looks horrible their is barely any cheese on it and it's what I call burnt. The customer service was great.

Chocolate donut

Stopped in this spot after playing at the railroad park before a three hour ride home. The Breakfast sandwich was delicious, the sauces were perfect and everything was great quality. The donuts were spectacular. Some on the best donuts I've had in a while. definitely recommend if you're in the Birmingham area for breakfast and donuts!

I'm glad I stopped in to this spot! The folks working were very friendly, there were several options available mid-morning, and it was a cozy spot to enjoy my maple bacon donut! The only thing that could have enhanced my visit would have been a hot tea (but alas, they don't serve it). 5/5 would stop in again if I find myself in Birmingham again!

Hero Donuts is a fun place in downtown Birmingham near the railroad park. We went later in the day and there were only 4 donuts of one kind remaining. I got the 4 to take home to my family, we wished there was a bigger selection, but it's understandable since it was later in the day. My son and I also had lunch there, a bit pricey overall, but the fries were hot and both of our sandwiches were delicious!

Hero is a great donut shop that will surprise you with its food. Known for their unique donuts, Hero has a wide variety of fluffy donuts with unique flavors. One comment is they do tend to pack on the icing and they can run a little too sweet, so maybe share if you're sensitive! But what I think is very underrated about this spot is their food options. They have really lovely breakfast sandwiches, burgers and chicken sandwiches that dont get the love they deserve. The fries are delicious! It's also a really cute joint, with retro tiles and a diner aesthetic. The railroad park location does tend to run out of donuts fast, so make it an early run if you want one!

Loaded Hashbrowns

I went to hero for brunch, and it was not disappointing! Off of their "Breakfast Plates" side of the menu, I got the Loaded Hashbrowns. The combination of sauces and jam may seem a little odd, but they pair very well together with the hashbrowns, onions, egg, and jalapeños for a satisfying and savory taste. The hashbrowns come in cubes, and they were served warm and crispy. The meal was filling and set at a reasonable price. The atmosphere and the workers were very nice, and my food was given to me in a reasonable amount of time. I overall recommend anyone to give this dish a try at Hero!

Trattoria Zaza - Pizza Caesar salad

Trattoria Zaza

This place is my type of vibe!…read more Trattoria ZaZa has been on my list of places to stop at for several years. Parking often deters me but after attending the Italian Festival earlier that day, we had a craving for pizza. I ordered the combo that includes 2 slices of the day with salad. Since I wasn't overly hungry, I offered him one of my slices and he added another slice to the order. We paid and were given a number to place on our selected table. Jazzy music played in the background while we waited on our order to be brought to the table. The natural lighting, while beautiful, made it a little warm in the building. One of the waitresses propped the door open that leads to the restrooms (which are in the hallway near the elevators) in order for cooler air to make its way in. That wasn't a deal breaker, but do be aware of that on warmer days. Our food came out after a short wait. I kept my 3 cheese slice, and gave him the pepperoni one. The cheeses were very rich and the salad, while simple without the frills, was perfectly sized and drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette that was just the right amount. While I enjoyed my meal very much and the ambiance, he wasn't overly impressed with his. He didn't want the fresh herbs on his slices and knocked all of them off, lol. He's a simple guy with simple taste. This is definitely a place I will be revisiting with one of my girlfriends and not him next time as he didn't appreciate what ZaZA had to offer. Everyone we encountered was helpful and courteous. Our food, including drinks, was around $28, which was not bad for a cute, eclectic spot downtown. If you haven't been, make sure to try them out soon. Just don't wait as long as I did to visit!

Where to start? Went on a weekend, place was packed. The…read moreBad: 1. SLOW. Waited in a line inside of 4 people in front of me. There was someone at the podium at the end who i thought was a server. Was not. After a 15 minute wait (why did it take that long?), we got to the podium person. And found out they were there to take our order, not seat us. Can only assume the 15 min delay was because people were trying to figure out what to order. No signage anywhere saying, please have what you want ready while you wait in line. 2. No menus, anywhere. Yes they can be printed and people in line could take one and figure out what they want. Yes, the menu could be put on the wall behind the server in large lettering. But no, they make you scan a QR code on the wall and view the menu on your phone, so that's inconvenient and a bit obtuse. 3. When we finally place an order for pizza, was told that, "they dont serve pizzas on the weekend, but we could order their "brunch pizzas", instead. Which on the counter, was small anemic cut slices of thick bready pizzas on the cutting board/table. Those each were $8.50 according to the menu. Figure the math of 2 small slices of pizza per person for 2 people vs just ordering a large pizza. But they don't serve pizza during brunch- Trattoria literally has the word "Pizza" in their last name- twice actually- yet you have to order a nearly $9 slice of pizza sitting out on a table for who knows how long, and of the flavor of their choice, not yours. It was flat out insulting to go to a pizza based establishment and be told they won't serve whole pizzas. We left and went to Uptown to a pizzaria there, and had a really good whole pizza, salad, dessert, and drinks, and all for half the price then if we had gone to Trattoria. Wanted to give this place a chance for years, but did not work out the way i had expected it to.

But I'm sorry the food? (In my case shrimp and grits) was NOT GOOD. And don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible flavor, but the flavors it did have were terrible. First the grits are not smooth at all. Like they aren't super course but they definitely could have been cooked down more. And they had little seasoning. And that's being generous. Then the "creole" sauce on top? Can we ask the audience what they consider creole? Because that was just pure tomato sauce. Like straight out a can, had to be. No way someone cooked that sauce from scratch or even with creole seasonings or typical additives I'm sorry I just refuse to believe it. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST... 5 shrimp??? You can't be serious. I could understand 5 shrimp if they're the huge jumbo ones but these are smedium at best. Like I feel BAMBOOZLED because no way I paid 24$ for 5 shrimp and maybe 1.5 cups of grits. But imma be honest I'm not surprised the food wasn't that good. Any place that puts on the bottom "we can't refund for food you don't like" that should tell you everything you need to know. But I digress My friends said the tequila sunrise was good so that's another star. Service and tequila sunrise. The only highlights. The venue is pretty but I don't recommend
