This place was excellent! Beautiful restaurant. Parking was a little wonky and I didn't find the valet. It's plenty of street parking available! The food was delicious! Beautiful place and the food was divine! The grits were my favorite! The brunch is $20 ish plus which is pricey for Birmingham but well worth it! Service was friendly and on point. The drinks were also good too.
Tasty food, great ambience, friendly service. Celebrated a "say yes to the dress" moment for brunch with my girl and some of her tribe! We brought our own fun and took plenty of pictures. Our party ordered shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, stuffed French toast, R&R Gumbo, and the classic breakfast. No complaints from anyone. Large portion sizes so many of us didn't finish our meal! Stuffed! Cocktails were on point too! I had the Basic B. It was yummy and only one was needed! Two of my girlfriends had the blueberry mojito and they enjoyed it! Service was a little slow but since we were having such a great time, it wasn't much of a problem. Seemed like they may have been a bit overwhelmed because I saw three people working and there were three large parties (7+) there along with several other people. Regardless, we had a great time!
Great environment, great food, great customer service. 10/10 recommended! I look forward to returning.
Pretty cool place. It is on the second floor. I recommend making reservations since it's pretty popular. We came for brunch and even though there were plenty of tables open inside, none were available so we had to sit outside. It was pretty hot. They did seem to be a little disorganized and seemed to have trouble even getting us the outside table. We got mimosas in a variety of flavors. We all enjoyed them. The wait for the food was about 45 minutes which was too long, frankly. Like I said, it was hot and I was getting cranky. I ordered the chicken and waffles which were good but nothing to write home about. Hubby got the stuffed French toast and he really liked it. The kid got the traditional breakfast and she said it was good. I tried her grits and they were really good. I would come back here again but would definitely make a reservation and maybe come for dinner. The place is kind of fancy so we did feel a little under dressed. If I was coming for dinner, I would dress a little nicer.

Our server was delightful, although some of our party was extremely late. I ordered the Caesar salad with chicken and 2 drinks. The salad / chicken were great and so were the drinks. No other complaints on the food by the remainder of the party. Would I agree with the price point? Meh lol When it came time to "cut the cake" (we had cupcakes) our server had to inform us it was going to be a $25 cutting cake fee. This is not unheard of so I was not surprised but once we informed our server it was cupcakes she said even then there would still be a fee. We ultimately decided to unveil and sing to our friend in the lobby prior to leaving for the night. Even shared with valet because he was super nice! Would I dine again? Possibly Would I recommend? Possibly with a disclaimer
The restaurant is on the second floor of the Jefferson Tower building. They have free valet parking (as of 11/2021). I highly recommend what I ordered for brunch: The cheesecake stuffed French toast. It's baguette bread stuffed w/pure perfection. The banana pecan beignets were also really good. The fried okra was not pickled but decent. The grits weren't special. They have good coffee. My friend's biscuit looked so good - it was massive. So why only 3 stars?? The service was very slow, my food came after everyone finished eating (I was in a party of 11). They removed the charge.. I did appreciate their willingness to make that right. Took 20 mins for a coffee refill. They gave us a very hard time about separating the checks bc we were a party over 6 people!? After haggling back and forth they did separate the checks. ** I mean who assumes a party of 11 is on the same ticket?? ** Please check out the pictures on Yelp of the food before you order. 2 men in our party ordered the omelette dishes... I felt so bad for them bc it was so small almost tiny. There's no way they left full. And it's not cheap! My friend said the shrimp and grits was good and recommendable.

The food was good. But I had asked everyone to please consider our time frame as we had a rehearsal to get to. I tried to order things immediately and the waitress kept saying they are coming. It made us have to adjust our tight schedule. It was bad luck I suppose as she had said two groups had cancelled and showed up anyway but the entire experience took hours and when I'd ask for something it wouldn't happen for a very long time. I felt we were not a priority and ignored :/ otherwise the food was very good.
This place is a perfect spot for a nice date or to catch up with some friends. The building is historic so if you appreciate architecture; you would love it. Parking is on the street or there is a parking lot that you can pay for. The service was great. We were treated immediately by the waitress and the manager frequently visited are table just to check in. We ordered the bottle of champagne and juice for $22 (not bad at all) I wanted to order the duck hash but I was informed they weren't serving it that day (bummer!) However, I ended up ordering the biscuits and gravy and my husband ordered the banana pecan beignets. The biscuits were huge and soft and fully. The Italian sausage gravy was flavorful and an elegant take on a southern classic. The beignets....are delicious!!! Even though, they looked as if they would be heavy. I was quite surprised to find them to be light and fluffy and PACKED with FLAVOR!
Only giving 3 stars because our server Megan was amazing. We really wanted to like this place. We ordered two appetizers;the fried green tomato caprese which was lovely and the fried Okra. The okra was okay but shouldn't be paired with the marinara sauce. I heard another table order ranch with It and heard that was usually the consensus. maybe a menu change would reflect how people generally feel. For dinner we ordered the pork belly & scallops and the filet mignon. My partner said the scallops were wonderful but they were sitting on a bed of basically uncooked beans. The beans were hard and could not even be poked through. The pork belly was nicely cooked but came with what tasted like store bought BBQ sauce, and did not pair well with the celeriac purée underneath. My filet was sad. Being so gristly, we returned It and got a new steak. the second one wasn't gristly but had absolutely no flavor. no spices no salt, nothing but a slab of meat. we were informed the chef was new and just "put It on there." maybe the chef is not ready to be in a restaurant that charges $60 for a filet. Again, megan was absolutely amazing and made our trip to the restaurant alright. I would not recommend this place to anyone, nor did I think the $130 we still did spend was worth It. Could've gotten a better dining experience at outback.
Me and my husband came in for dinner and had the absolute best time. The atmosphere is upscale and the artwork is really beautiful. I loved the high ceilings. The music was perfect because it wasn't too loud but actually made it so we weren't bothered by other people having conversations. Ok now the food was fantastic and the chicken bruschetta was HUGE! Honestly could have been an entre it was so filling. Salmon was cooked well and the sauce on it was delicious. Plus the Arancini was soooo good with the mozzarella and the marinara! The servers were super on top of everything, especially Kathleen!
So it went like this. I had a reservation at 7:45 PM. I was not seated until 8:03 PM. The restaurant is busy. Cool. I scoped the place. Nice. Cute art. Majority Caucasian patrons, 3 African American patrons as well. If this specific information matters to you, use it. If it doesn't, don't. After being seated it takes another 9+ minutes for someone to come to the table and take my drink order. The waitress comes back to the table(without my drink), and by this time I have my whole order ready. I run off my choices and she's like ohhhhh. We don't have that. ** I was given the wrong menu that I've been looking at for at least 20 min!! ** I'm given the right menu and it took forever for her to come back. I grab another waitress and give her my order including appetizer and the drink I haven't received yet (but ppl who were seated after me had received theirs). It's now 8:30 and I JUST got my cocktail from the original waitress. I let her know I spoke with another server and updated her on my choices as to what I ordered. I acknowledged to her that I realize she's busy and asked her to come right back so I could order my entree. It was at least 15 minutes before I saw her again. I hate it here. 8:41 PM by this time I have grabbed a bus lady for my next drink submittal (also asked to speak to a manager but she attempted to take control of the situation and get what I needed. Kudos to her). In true original server fashion, she comes back to the table 3 minutes later asking for my entree. I ordered the short rib. My appetizer makes its way to the table. The gumbo base is good but could use a little love. I asked for salt and pepper to season it but my heart wanted to ask for garlic powder/salt and crushed red peppers. My second drink arrives and it's good as well. My food arrives at 9:03. Haha. I've been here for an hour. Green beans. Amazing. Short ribs. Tender af. Perfectly cooked. But it needs some seasoning love. Grits. *reaches for salt and pepper, wishes cheddar cheese made an appearance* 9:08 PM the original waitress checks in and I'm asking for the desert menu! Won't catch me slippin. 9:17 PM OG comes back and says they dont have a desert menu and proceeds to run off what they offered. I passed. Check pls. 9:24 check arrives. $101 dollars later. Please get me up outta here. I notice the head chef walking around. He talks to multiple tables and never comes this way!!!!!! At this point this isn't just a bad review. This is a bad experience mixed with hella insult. Today I left a 15% tip. The only thing my waitress did quick was run my method of payment. Buenos. Noches.
Food was great. Service was great. Nice atmosphere. Will be back for brunch or dinner again. Only gave it a 4 because they were out of the entree I wanted.

Got fried green tomato Benedict with salmon for brunch. Absolutely delicious. Beautiful place. Good service. Got free champagne because our food took a little longer to come out even though it didn't feel that long to us. This place is on the fancier side - a place I might take out of town guests. I would highly suggest getting a reservation. Will definitely be back! read more
Chile please keep your money. This place (in my opinion) has little bang for a big buck. The service was great so if it was solely based on that I'd give them a 5 star. But I'm sorry the food? (In my case shrimp and grits) was NOT GOOD. And don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible flavor, but the flavors it did have were terrible. First the grits are not smooth at all. Like they aren't super course but they definitely could have been cooked down more. And they had little seasoning. And that's being generous. Then the "creole" sauce on top? Can we ask the audience what they consider creole? Because that was just pure tomato sauce. Like straight out a can, had to be. No way someone cooked that sauce from scratch or even with creole seasonings or typical additives I'm sorry I just refuse to believe it. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST... 5 shrimp??? You can't be serious. I could understand 5 shrimp if they're the huge jumbo ones but these are smedium at best. Like I feel BAMBOOZLED because no way I paid 24$ for 5 shrimp and maybe 1.5 cups of grits. But imma be honest I'm not surprised the food wasn't that good. Any place that puts on the bottom "we can't refund for food you don't like" that should tell you everything you need to know. RESTAURANT THE SPOT Roots & Revelry 1623 2nd Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203 My Order Chicken & Waffles (Buttermilk Breaded Chicken, Ginger and Lemongrass Syrup) *added bacon and eggs* Let's talk about it!! So this wasn't my first rodeo with Roots & Revelry but I went with some friends last weekend and decided to do a review this time around. In my opinion, most people go here for the mimosas. On weekends you get a champagne bottle for $22 with whichever flavor juice you want. I ordered the chicken and waffles for my meal this time and I will not do that again. The waffle was missing something and just didn't do what it needed to do. The chicken tenders were delicious though! Whew. The bacon bussed down as usual. Can't go wrong with connecuh bacon. Now the eggs were good but I was upset because it was $8.00 to add on a side of TWO EGGS... yes T W O. I don't know what these restaurants have going on lately but I'm going to need them to get it together. I could've went and got a whole carton of eggs for that price..... #dobetter Overall, the ambiance and mimosas are what keeps the people going to Miss Roots because other than that, nah. Arrived on a late Friday morning for a bridal brunch and was met with the most aesthetic scene and remarkable service! Our waiter (I believe his name was Jason? Unsure how deficient my memory is) was attentive and social, the perfect vibe for a bridal brunch. When we asked him to take pictures for us, he went above and beyond to capture the perfect shot for us. If all the staff they hire is like him, the place is in great hands. Onto the food- I ordered the gumbo with rice. Unfortunately, the ratio was a bit off for me- I wish there was more rice.. and it was a bit too salty for me. HOWEVER, the appetizers were absolutely *chefs kiss* We ordered the fried okra (remarkable and memorable marinara sauce), beignets (sweet and fluffy), and I think the last one was a fried cheese of sorts?? Also good Overall vibe of the place is light and airy with lots of natural lighting. Highly recommend! Would come back because the dishes everyone else ordered looked delish, service is personable, and place is a fun ambience read more

This place was pretty great. The vibe and ambience is amazing. I will say that it it a bit loud, but that's most likely due to the high ceilings and close proximity to people. I didn't mind it but just a note in case you dislike loud places. The restaurant is beautiful though and nicely decorated with inside and outside seating. The food was great too. We went for brunch and had mimosas as well as an array if other drinks. The French Toast and Beignets were delicious. The Egss Benedict is great too. Honestly, if you love breakfast food their brunch menu doesn't miss. The service was also great. Sarah was our waitress and she was amazing. It was a bit slow, but she informed us about this issue ahead of time and went out of her way to make sure everything was amazing and that any missteps were corrected. It gave us a bit more time to talk so I cannot complain haha, overall great time and would come back again. read more
Cute roof top brunch. The menu had cute food.. don't be super hungry when you go.. great for a day or brunch with e girls.. you can even have a private brunch party here.. they have a great play list playing in the back group.. not too expensive. There is one guy server there who is always a vibe I can't remember his name but he wear glasses and braids I'll get it next time I go! He is alway down to take pics for your group! read more

Consumers be aware. We consider ourselves to be lovers of fine restaurants and dining experiences. Roots and Revelry did not come close to meeting the standards that we have become accustomed to. Traci, the manager on duty, was aloof, and based upon her actions, she's proven herself to possess limited integrity. During a Saturday brunch experience, her actions resulted in our our order being botched. She brought one entrée out approximately 15 minutes before the other. This, of course, resulted in a very subpar dining experiences for a party of two. Traci then blamed the server for her mistake. When the second entrée arrived at the table, it was obviously a rush job, which resulted in a dish that was not edible. Our server was apologetic, and she offered to comp our meals. She even provided us with two additional brunch beverages (spirits). I asked her if she was certain that she did not want for us to pay for the beverages, and she said said that she was comping everything, including the beverages. She went on to tell us that Traci was the owners girlfriend and was not aware of what she was doing. I found the fact that they both spoke negatively about one another unbecoming. However, we sat at our table for approximately another hour as we waited out the rain. This occurred on a Saturday afternoon. To my surprise, five days later, I received a call from a number that I didn't recognize. The call was followed by a text from Traci, who identified herself as the manager at Roots and Revelry. Her text: "This is Traci the Manager from Roots and Revelry. I'd like to close out your open ticket. We would prefer to avoid an official report with the Birmingham Police." Update Of course, I called her back, and to say she was amplified would be a mild description of her interactions during our phone conversation. I politely informed her that I knew exactly who she was, and I shared that she was accurate in saying that we were recently at the restaurant. I then shared that I was perplexed by the need to settle a ticket since we were told that we would be compensated by the server. I asked if our server was present and if we could all speak. The server was there, and she denied stating that would be comped. Instead, she stated that she was only comping the two beverages provided after we notified her about the second entrée being inedible. How very sad... but what would you expect when a manager is forcing the hand of an employee? I yielded, as I am not one to banter. I asked how would you like for me to settle the charges. After clarifying exactly what items I would be charged for, the amount was determined. I then reminded them that we also had coffee and that it should be included. I then submitted the payment. Debt settled! Traci sarcastically asked if I'd like to leave a tip. I declined, of course. I truly hope that Traci, the owners current girlfriend, feels a sense of accomplishment. I'm glad that I was able to save the Birmingham Police Department a little time because she was certain that we would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The funny thing is that I documented the experience on the Open Table app prior to being contacted by Traci. It's almost laughable to think that we had our integrity questioned after being assured that the meal was being compensated because of poor service and quality. All this for an amount less than $50.00. It would do restaurateurs well to understand that diners don't make the rules and no diner enters an establishment hoping to receive poor service in an effort to receive something for nothing. In fact, the opposite is true diners enter understanding that they will not only pay for meals, but they will most likely provide a suitable gratuity. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by today's interaction with Traci. When stupidity is empowered, responsibility and accountability often escape. The fact that both the manager and server spoke negatively to guests about one another provides an adequate basis for understanding that the root of this issue is in-house communication. read more

We have been going to this place for about three months now. The parking outside is a little awkward but don't be alarmed they have valet! Once you get up to the rooftop the ambience is great old vintage plus featured art all over the wall. The service sometimes can be a little slow but the food makes up for it! If you're going for brunch 1000% get the shrimp and grits the salsa on it makes it! Steer away from the duck hash!! For dinner We would recommend starting with any of their fresh cocktails, or a glass of wine. The gumbo is to die for but the star of the show is the Caesar chicken salad blackened with extra ancho Caesar dressing! ( note: The dressing is so good you're going to want to take it home!! THEY SELL IT, so just ask) If you don't get that you're not doing roots and revelry right.. all in all this is a 8.5 out of 10 spot!! Highly recommend! We Go here whenever we can. read more

This was my first time coming here and I must say the aura was so nice! This was the most exquisite taste of chicken and waffles I've ever had. It is made with lemongrass and ginger and it was interesting, I actually really liked it. Typically I would get a mimosa, but I am currently not drinking alcohol, so I just had the coffee on the side to pair with it, and it really brought a balance (But my friend said that the mimosas were really good lol) They offer free valet, which is convenient. The only thing I wish is that this place was a little bigger. They were pretty packed whenever we arrived, but gratefully we had a reservation but our table was just in a really awkward space. But overall, I would definitely return here to visit. read more

WAITED FOREVER TO GET COLD & SALTY FOOD! It's been a fantastic restaurant, but my husband and I decided not to go back again. (Their excuse was they hired a NEW CHEF!) We had beignets as an appetizer and two main dishes. 'Beignets' are normally too hot to touch it, but those were room temperature. Main dishes came out over an hour later. 'Duck hash' was too salty and dry, and 'Gumbo' was plain and not hot enough as a soup. As you can see in the picture rice pile has crumbled and soup was everywhere on the dish. We always sat at the bar to get away from people, but the bar area was blocked and they squeezed us in a tight dining area. The restaurant was too crowded and loud. Not recommending for a peaceful brunch. We've been recommending this place to friends & family, but now we need to take the word back and we'll be embarrased if they actually visit. read more

It is Birmingham Reataurant Week 2019 and the list of participating restaurants are Awesome and I would love to take a visit to all of them. However, not possible so I decided to go with Roots and Revelry because I have never eaten here and I loved the food and beverage options. The restaurant is intimate and I like the table setup and lighting. The staff was nice and very attentive. We were served our food and checked on periodically. My friend and I both had the Fried chicken (crispy skin), Red skin mash (good size pieces of garlic cloves and love the lumps of potato), Sauteed spinach (seasoned with a kick of what appeared to be red pepper flakes) and natural jus on the side. We went in different directions on the drinks. He had the Strawberry fields (he wanted a little more of the strawberry flavor) and I had the Zen garden (enjoy the blackberry pieces throughout). Oh last but not least we both loved our desserts of Peach shortcake and Banana chocolate lava cake. The perfect ending to a great evening. #BRW2019!!! read more

Post update: Threatening Manager Traci! Although a nice ambiance upon walking inThis place SUCKS! The food was awful and the attitude of Tracy, the owner's girlfriend was even worst. We made several attempts to make the best of it but it just got worst by the minute and Tracy's dismissive attitude left nothing to be desired. I absolutely love a great dining experience and if that is what you are looking for, this place is definitely not it! Please do not waste your money but more importantly your time. I guess if I have to say something positive it would be that at least food was delivered to our table, (no matter how awful) because another party seated across from us sat for nearly 2 hours only to be served warm coffee. I overheard them complain to Tracy only to be dismissed as well. At least I can say that Tracy was consistent with her terrible attitude and clear lack of restaurant management knowledge. read more

My friends and I visited Roots and Revelry to celebrate our first "post vaccine" brunch together. We made a reservation ahead of time (almost a necessity especially with more than two people). We sat on the very cute patio which has a great atmosphere. Our server was very helpful and nice. She was able to give us good recommendations on menu items and she talked me into the chicken and waffles. THEY WERE SO GOOD. The syrup had almost a lemongrass flavor added to it (loved it). The waffles and chicken were cooked to perfection. Other members of my group (who didn't get the chicken and waffles) got Cobb Salads. They looked so good and were large portions. I will be having one of those next time. This place books up quickly so make sure you plan accordingly. read more
Sunday is the day for brunch., especially with great company! I met my very pregnant friend Ashley for a bite to eat at Roots! This is one of my favorite brunch spots in the city! I am in love with its rustic interior and the patio offers a wonderful view of downtown Birmingham! I definitely had decaf coffee, and so did my friend! I ordered the Gulf Omelette and she had their famous Chicken and Waffles! The Gulf Omelette, trounced with crab, roasted peppers, dusted with just the right amount of feta cheese! For a side choice, you could choose between dressed mixed greens or fruit skewers. I love fruit, but I felt I was in need of some greens, so I had just that. The meal was especially apt and fulfilling! I finished every bite. Did I mention eggs are a great source of protein? So if you're ever in for brunch, I recommend this item, as it is healthy and flavorsome! We will be. Back soon! read more

Good lord. This place was stellar. We were seated outside on a beautiful sunny day. There was plenty of space between tables which I appreciated. We started with the fried okra that was so tasty. Next I had the fried green tomato caprese salad with a basil aioli and balsamic glaze. It was so good as well. The fried green tomatoes had a light breading that was super crunchy. Everyone's meal was amazing and we will definitely be back! read more
My husband and I decided to try Roots and Revelry for brunch. I had the banana and pecan beignets. They were delicious, but are more like an old fashioned donut hole than a beignet! It was a huge portion plenty for a meal, to share, or take home. It also comes with a side of Conecuh bacon or sausage. The service was great and the price was good!! You can't bet that! read more
I love the atmosphere and the space. The restaurant has a modern vibe in a historic building. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the Thomas Jefferson building. In addition to the dining room and bar, there is a lovely outdoor terrace, large ballroom, and a parlor that each can be rented for private events. We enjoyed drinks on the patio and moved to the bar when the rain started. Our bartender was Lance, and he did a great job of keeping up with our orders and tabs. Our group was about 15 and he addressed everyone by first name. That was a nice touch. I dined at the bar. It was a good experience. I ordered the Oyster Po-boy and it came with garlic fries. The po-boy was stacked high with plump, fried oysters. I thought it was excellent, and slightly different from a New Orleans style po-boy. The bread was spread with a buttery aioli sauce, and the batter/fry was not as crunchy as the typical Louisiana preparation. The fries were good, not to much garlic. My friends that ordered the Crisp Pork Ribs said they were outstanding. I also tried a few fried okras (sliced lengthwise) and the hummus appetizer. Both were excellent. read more
