Both times I have gone, I have gotten the lunch fried chicken breast and gravy. It's a really nice place in a nice area, with white tablecloths that make you wanna spend a little more effort getting ready and maybe leave the kids at home haha. It's not often that you see a meat and three option on the menu at a restaurant like this and it actually be worth ordering, but Daniel George succeeds in providing the kind of meal your grandma would've made -- they just serve it on nicer plates. The service is super fast and the meal comes with a delicious cheddar biscuit. The sides haven't knocked my socks off but chicken will continue to have me coming back for more. read more

Had a private dinner here and cannot rave enough about the quality of food! Ambiance: We had a lovely private room where we could all talk easily without the noise of the rest of the restaurant. Food: We got a bunch of appetizers for the table including the crab cakes, tuna tartare, and some crab claws sautéed in garlic butter (I'm still dreaming about the latter!). The soup of the day was gumbo and it was life changing. Several of my colleagues ordered the pan seared whitefish and raved about it. I ordered a special lobster ravioli with scallops. This tasted amazing but the scallops came separately about 5 minutes after my dish was served which was odd. Service: Overall, we had decent service. Daniel George is an iconic dinner location in Mountain Brook Village that has been there as long as I can remember. I've recently learned it's also a favorite place to grab an elevated "meat and three" for lunch. The same white tablecloths and great service, but with a "southern diner" menu. We enjoyed the fried chicken with white gravy, turnip greens, red beans, hamburger steak and of course, cornbread and sweet tea. They offer beer and wine at lunch, as well. I don't think there's a dress code, but I would recommend business or similar attire. read more

Beautiful restaurant in the mountain brook area of Birmingham. Dined with friends and each of us got something different. One ordered the gulf shrimp with collards and Brussel sprouts. She ate every crumb! The other friend had 2 vegetables, corn bread and the grilled shrimp. Again not a morsel left on the plate. Me being the fattest (my 2 friends nice and slim) I ordered the crab cake, fried green tomatoes and squash casserole. Delicious. The corn bread comes with each lunch plate and was scrumptious. Our waitress was very sweet and we received excellent service. Ordered 2 to go plates for my son and daughter. Looked really yummy! The sweet tea was true southern sweet tea! I received unforgettable service from a BEAUTIFUL server named Erin who seated me immediately upon arrival around noon. She recommended the squash which I would have not normally tried and I'm grateful I did. The atmosphere, charm, and taste of the food culminated to make this a 5/5 experience for me; I could not stop smiling. I absolutely enjoyed everything about DG! I was quite shocked that a white tablecloth setting would have such an outstanding meat and 2 or 3 or 4 situation! I wanted everything on the menu!! Our server , Ben ( I believe) was amazing! I ordered the hamburger steak (with gravy , mushrooms and onions ), mashed potatoes and their spicy pineapple collards. Every bite I just knew this food was well crafted and could taste the effort put into each portion! I will say the only downside was , the food wasn't as hot in temp as I prefer. Notice I didn't even take a star away for this because DG provided the total dining experience I look for! My friend who I met for lunch has frequent DG several times . This being my first time , I was blown away! I can assure you that I will definitely be popping in again .... real soon! The vibe is relaxing and very nicely decorated. It's great for a date night , GNO or solo outing. The bar and dining areas are both very spacious as well. Street parking is available but this area can present some challenges depending on the time of day of your visit. All and all , it's well worth it!! This is one of my favorite spots to visit. It is a part of my regular lunch rotation. The staff is always pleasant. They also take proper precautions and provide sanitizer. We go there for lunch around 11:15 and there's always a place to park. After that, it gets really busy. So try to get there early. My favorite menu item to get is their hamburger steak with gravy. It is so good. I always add mashed potatoes and fried okra. I recently tried the creamed corn when their okra wasn't available. It was soo good and wasn't too creamy. It was perfect. The chicken breast with gravy was also very good. It usually comes with a biscuit that is a welcomed treat. I would highly recommend that everyone try the lava cake. It usually comes with berries and a chocolate ice cream. It is one of my favorite desserts. You may want to order it when you order your meal because it takes a minute to prepare. You will not regret it. Our server Ben was also very knowledgeable of the menu items and was attentive to my seafood allergy. We had our end of the year, Christmas lunch here. Our reservation was for 11AM, and while hardly anyone was in the restaurant when we arrived, parking was still very difficult. When we left, the restaurant was pretty full, but we had no idea where everyone parked to get there! The food was good - everyone cleaned their plates. Lunch came out fairly quickly after ordering, but dessert took longer than expected (or appropriate) for a lunch meeting/hour. Our server was super knowledgeable about the menu and answered all of our questions. The sprouts were a hit at the table. The Hamburger steak was a little dry. Same with the chicken... it could have used a gravy to go with. Portions are a little smaller, but I'm guessing that's because they are lunch portions. We were eager to have a treat on our trips, but not be overwhelmed with rich food. At first, I thought this would be too fancy, but the waitstaff was completely welcoming and courteous. We started with martinis and they were well made and not in a small footfy glass. I have the cheese appetizer which featured the best blue cheese, perfect with the beverage. Excellent crackers, and other nice cheeses and spectacular honey. Other half sampled the tomato soup and was pleased. I had the veggie plate which features a wonderful variety of veggie sides. A bit more starchy than I would normally eat, but tasty. I paired it with a perfectly delicious Albariño Other half enjoyed the bolognese with. Red blend. Then I couldn't think of anything else! We were lucky to snag reservations for early dining. When we walked in: WHOA!! A total restaurant makeover! Beautiful drapes which made it quieter. Spectacular lighting which looked like an art piece! And the food was as good as ever! We shared a grilled peach salad. Luscious. Then I got the oyster appetizer which they doubled to make my entree. It's been too long since we've been to Daniel George. Is it still the five star dining experience I remember? It is. They're doing social distancing right. This means we had to wait a bit for our table to be set up, we didn't mind. The food was worth it, and the peace of mind, knowing they were taking Covid precautions seriously, was worth it. I'm often a problem child when I eat out, having several questions about the menu, but each question was answered with good cheer, none of the eye rolling I deserve. Our appetizers were fantabulous. I had the shortrib ravioli, something new for me. Triple the size, or only double it, and this would be fantastic entrée. My dining companions started off with fried oysters and a salad, both of which got rave review. We argued over who had the best tasting appetizer. I don't care what they claim, I won. For our entrees I was torn but finally settled on the beef tenderloin which was twice the size I was expecting. The veal demiglace was out of this world. Do not sneer at the sides of spinach with bacon thingies, carrots and truffled fries (I asked that mine come un-truffled). There was nothing plain about these sides. I am the first to admit that I don't always eat my vegetables but they were gone before the steak was, and the steak was nothing to sneeze at. There was too much for me to finish; the rest came home with me and was a fine lunch the next day. My pals got the vegetable plate, which at Daniel George is as much a feast for the eyes as it is a feast for the belly. She's no fan of beets and asked that if any were included they be left in the kitchen with the truffles for my fries. My other friend selected the pork chop, which was enormous and, according to him, delicious. Unlike me, he had no leftovers to take home. The chop came with apples and brussels sprouts. I was too full for dessert but my friends got the tres leches cake and the frozen berry tart, which were both declared the perfect end to a perfect meal. I was in search of a place to go for a lunch meeting today. The requirements were, in Mountain Brook Village and has good low carb options. Daniel George seemed to fit that bill pretty well. And having never tried it before, it was a good opportunity to scratch that of my list. Their lunch set up is very interesting. While it is an upscale kind of place, they have offerings like a meat and three. With a choice of about 6 different meats, I had a choice to stick super low carb on that and venture a little more with the sides. Or do it the opposite way. If you read my reviews regularly, then you have done two thing: 1). Have the knowledge that I recently had one of the best fried chicken breasts I have had and 2). Confirmed my narcissistic image that people regularly read my reviews. All that being said, I found myself ordering a fried chicken breast again after getting a suggestion from our waiter. As I did the less low carb option meat wise, I had to stick with better options as the sides. So I opted for the collard greens, brussell sprouts, and spinach. Not sure why, but they decided I also needed broccolini. General consensus is that the chicken breast was delicious. But not as good as the one I had recently. The brussells were definitely my best side. I had to go around the pineapple in the collards that left them with a very unique taste. If you like your greens sweeter rather than spicy, these would be for you. But I tend to be a spicy greens kind of person. The spinach was good and flavorful as was the broccolini. All in all, it was really good, but not great. I look forward to trying their dinner at some point after reading a lot of these other reviews. Being able to venture out on the menu will also probably help. read more

After several years of working in food service myself, I find myself to be considerate of what time a restaurant closes and try to act accordingly to be considerate to all parties involved. However, we noted that DG closed at 10, and we were able to get a reservation for 8:30 - great. We entered the restaurant and were seated in a corner of the restaurant lit by obnoxiously bright LED/fluorescent lights. Understanding that ambiance is a small thing to care that much about (meaning that had this been the only issue, it would not even be worth mentioning), we took the table with no issues. We were then promptly informed by our waiter, Chris G., that "you're my last table of the night". There was no greeting otherwise. We made a joke about how we weren't a high maintenance table - Chris seemed to take this to heart by stopping by only to get our meal orders and never to check in further. I didn't enjoy my first drink I ordered and ordered a secondary drink; Chris never asked if there was an issue with the beverage - even after it was left on the table to sit and not be consumed in any capacity. Around 8:50, they started putting the chairs on the tables in the portion of the restaurant we were sitting, signaling to us that we were not welcome at our table anymore. I want to make it clear that while this was never said to us, the action itself inspired an environment that led us to watch a group congregate and chat for 10 or so minutes. At 9:05, we asked for our check. We were out the door and on the way to the car by 9:15. I understand trying to get out of the door by closing time - it's a goal for all of us that work in life and keeping to a schedule makes things easier. However, when a meal costs as much as the meal at DG cost us, you would expect to not feel ran out of the restaurant by the employees. Furthermore, you would expect to be treated with some courtesy. Chris G. exhibited little to none until he saw the method in which we paid for the meal. When he saw that the card paying was a harder card to get, his entire demeanor shifted in what seemed to be a last ditch effort to get a tip. Because we understand the concept of tipping in restaurants, we are not the type that would not tip at the end of a meal - however, the way you treat people should not be hinged on your perceived ability of how much a customer is willing and able to pay. By far the best meal we enjoyed during our 6 day trip to the Birmingham area. Opened in 2001, this elegant restaurant (and low-key, sexy bar area) offers fresh Southern Classic re-vamped to suit the modern palate. Goat-cheese stuffed chicken was simply perfection, served over creamy polenta with broccoli and roasted local peaches. My dish was also amazing, a paper-thin pork picatta in a delicate meuniere with capers. Served over sweet roasted broccolini. Best of all? House-made blackberry cobbler. So perfect and reminiscent of "mee-maw's" of years ago. Service by Frank and the lovely young hostess was spot-on. If we lived in this (cute 'n yuppified) suburb, we would definitely be back. DG has been on our Bham foodie list for a while. I had the the scallops and polenta, which were great, but my side brussels were pretty charred. I didn't complain because I actually like mine that way but just disclosing here as most people don't like their veggies with a side of ash. Also, with only 4 scallops on my plate, I felt that 2-3 more would have been a more reasonable serving for the $38/plate pricing. My husband enjoyed his coq au vin chicken and found both it and the side gnocchi very filling. Service was adequate, but not remarkable. A distinctive cocktail menu would be a great improvement to the overall dining experience. While our food was good and we are glad to have visited, we aren't sure that a return trip will be in order. read more

Great New Years Eve Dinner. $80 4 course menu with great options. Ode to southern tradition black eyed peas, greens and goat cheese app started the meal off right. I had the Bacon wrapped quail app which was presented perfectly and was beyond out of bounds good. Others had the tuna app and said it was great. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham. The food is always excellent, and this time was no exception. We ordered appetizers to have as our dinner because the portions are so generous. My husband ordered the oyster duo and was amazed by how many were in the order and enjoyed every bite. I had the beef carpaccio which was delicious. We later ate the mustard caviar and shared the cheese plate of local cheeses. Unfortunately, we did not save room for my favorite chocolate lava cake, maybe next time. The service was a bit slow but our evening was very enjoyable. Went again expecting a great evening. We were very disappointed. Service was very slow and my husbands oysters were not served as cold as they should be. Asked for refills on water and it took over five minutes.
