Lunch after Church today. Very nicely decorated, big windows, lots of light. Lots of charm, can tell building has been there a long time. According to Goggle search building originally built in 1930. Waiter was nice and friendly, could have been a little more attentive. Seems to be common thread in reviews that multiple staff pass tables frequently without acknowledgment of your presence. Twice individual whom by dress I believe to have been the chef waked through dinning room without acknowledgment to any table. I had finished glass of tea, and water and had to wait for refill. Was waiting for server to pass by, but never saw him, he finally walked by and ask if I wanted refill. Nice that they do leave bottle of water on table. Seemed to be adequate staffing, place was only maybe 10% full. Felt wait staff could have been a little more connected with dinners due to smaller number of table occupied. Food was a little slow coming out, but worth the wait. Feel like everything must be cooked to order. I had the catfish tacos, wife had the shrimp poboy. Both were fresh, hot and delicious. Finished with piece of key lime pie. We really liked this place even with the slower customer service. We'll be going back. Brunch menu served till 3:00 on Sunday, not sure about other days. Only a couple nights in town but so glad we stopped here! We trudged all over the south and this was a great way to end our trip. My family stopped here before heading to Birmingham airport and it was such a vibe! We ate outdoors and there was a live band playing! The food was really good. The service was AWFUL . First entered the restaurant, stood there for a minute until the bartender welcome us. Now this guy with long Locs was standing there looking at TV and never once acknowledged us. Then he turn and ask if we want a booth or table, never greeted us. I informed him that I had a reservation and was like oh and states my name. Very DRY and UNWELCOME personality. So we get a booth seat and wait and wait and wait for a good 15 minutes. The guy and the server walked by several times without saying a word. And the restaurant wasn't busy or full, only 4 to 5 other guest there. Finally the server came after 20 mins of waiting. Our book club met at Magnolia Point on Saturday to discuss our monthly read, and it was the perfect spot for it. The atmosphere was cozy, welcoming, and great for conversation without feeling too loud or crowded. The staff was friendly and accommodating to our group, and the food and drinks were excellent. Wow! I've known about this spot for a while, but hadn't made it out yet. The Pihakis group does a fantastic job of renovating spaces around town. With Magnolia Point in particular, I love that they stayed true to the outside of this historical building. Inside feels like an upscale, sports-bar-but-make-it-daytime spot. I came for lunch with my mom on a Friday and we were quite hangry. Only 5 or so other tables occupied, but they had the full bar open and TVs on. Although it was a drizzly day, the porch looks awesome. I'd love to sip a brewski out there on a summer night. I had the fried shrimp platter with a side of collard greens and mac and cheese. The mac is seasoned well, almost a little overly seasoned for how I like my mac (more eggy, light). The collard greens and hushpuppies were outstanding. Fried shrimp hit the mark, too. Although this place is in a very central spot of Birmingham, it still is a bit off the beaten path. Very rarely am I driving down this road, although I live so close! Umbrellas and different colored seating, stage with TV and DJ a certain times of the season, with lots of plants to make it feel homey! Great parking lot for being downtown! I finally made it to Magnolia Point! My late afternoon Saturday visit was perfect. It wasn't crowded at all. First off , there's a dedicated patron parking lot in the rear of the restaurant! Now let's get to it ... I sat at the bar and Gabriel took the greatest care of me. I ordered a $5 (happy hour wine) glass off Sauvignon Blanc. It was very refreshing and lovely tasting! Since I wasn't that hungry , I had a cup of gumbo and an order of the jalapeño hush puppies. Both were equally delicious and satisfying! Nice portions. I also got a slice of key lime pie to go. This pie was outstanding and I'm so glad I was talked into getting a slice..... no regrets! The price point was reasonable for what I got. I absolutely love the ambiance here. It has a nice open , modern feel to you.. very comfortable and beautiful inside . Their patio is adorable too & I definitely plan to return to bask in the sun on a day when it's not raining. The vibes are so great at Magnolia Point! There were 6 of us and we were able to get sat immediately. We really wanted to sit on the patio but there was a threat of storms. Outside has a great patio with bistro lighting, beautiful plants, and a big screen tv which makes for a great game day spot! The service started out great as we were one of the only tables inside. Once we got our food and a large table of about 20 was sat behind us, it was harder to get service although I believe it was mainly our two groups. We had asked another team member for a couple items we were waiting on and some water, but they just said they would get our waitress although she was busy with the large table. Aside from that, which can happen, we had a great time! I got the burger and it was so delicious and juicy! It came exactly as I asked. The other gals had po boys and seafood platters and everyone really enjoyed what they got. Parking is good as they have a parking lot which is typically uncommon for the 5 points area and it felt clean and safe. The curb appeal was really nice! The inside is nicely decorated with plenty of seating. They also have outside seating. We ordered gumbo, crab claws (fried and sautéed) and blackened bbq chicken. First off the seafood gumbo was non existent of seafood, conecuh sausage and seasoning. This was the most bland tasting gumbo I've ever had, no creole or Cajun seasoning no where. The crab claws were fried and sautéed to perfection; seasoned well. My husband had the blackened chicken. It was too spicy and tasted more like a jerk chicken. They do have a good variety of adult beverages, from wine to beer to cocktails. If we choose to go back it would only be for the crab claws and cocktails. We got all types of Appetizers; crab claws, wings-lemon pepper and hot, smoked tina dip, hush puppies and 2 orders of gumbo! Everything good. On Entrees we got 2 orders of catfish, one with greens and a baked potato and one with greens and Mac and cheese. Since I was forced to eat on dr orders after an ER visit I don't feel it would be fair to put much stock in my only visit. Haven't had an appetite in over weeks. Even sweet tea would not be a fair assessment. The fact I didn't even finish my glass of tea shows how off balance my taste buds were. I will review what wasn't negatively impacted by being ill. We were warmly greeted and immediately seated in a quiet area. The table was extremely clean without a sticky residue sometime left by the bus staff. The parking lot is a perk more businesses on the Southside should invest in to increase loyalty. It's why my driver vetoed the sandwich shop I suggested because I agreed to soup. They didn't want to drop me to walk inside alone. It was the parking space that made their meal selection. Even though after we both tried the Gumbo, they apologized to me. It was suggested to me again to get a commercial kitchen and sell my Gumbo to local restaurants because they have yet to taste a bowl better than mine. Is it fair to call that watery, unseasoned murk gumbo though? I take great care to ensure there's room for a piece of chicken, sausage, shrimp, crab, fish or ham in most spoonful. There should a chunk of protein in each portion without much effort. I gave up seeking seafood or sausage in my bowl. My host knew my dislike of sending food back for refunds because most businesses think it's a ploy just for free food. However, when their fish was so awful they couldn't take it. I concluded they were right. The manager blamed new kitchen personnel and took care of everything. We paid for the gumbo and drinks. I sat there and read the Elite reviews. According to the well person with me the fish wasn't uniquely bad that day. It was as awful as previously reviewed. It seems the reviews are accurate. I expect to get double dipped fish at fast casual chain restaurants. To see catfish and hush puppies cooked as hard as what we noticed next table over is ridiculous. It's an outrage at this prices. The staff is well trained and picked for their sweet, southern and witty personalities. The facilities are outstanding. The food is subpar. I will try them again when I'm well. (We picked up a bowl of Crab Bisque from the sandwich shop and I couldn't help noticing another seafood restaurant parking lot full as usual. I suggest MP get their Tartar sauce recipe and if I decide to market my gumbo, they will be the first establishment I contact. ). This will be next restaurant to close in Bham. Food was good bit the problem is the staff. Bham doesn't have enough upper quality staff and management to run a successful restaurant. Managers need to be on site and crosses trained to help all aspects. I sat at the bar and watched one guy drown and ruin 30-40 peoples experience because he has the only one making drinks and attending to bar diners. He did his best but it was a train wreck. I made a reservation based on other reviews recommendations but we were dining early enough it probably wasn't necessary. Seated immediately, but had a bit of a wait to order. Once we did the food arrived extremely fast. Gumbo was really good! We shared the Captain's Platter of Fried Grouper, Fried Shrimp & Fried Oysters with sides of French Fries and a salad. The platter also came with a couple of hushpuppies. Everything was great! My wife really liked the oysters. The Strawberry Margarita was very good as well. The restaurant definitely looks like it could be right at home looking out of the gulf coast. Tonight you could really picture it because there was some flash flooding in the intersection just outside the windows, although the drainage was good enough that it cleared fairly quickly. Crab Cake was the special of the day and I can't resist Crab. I've eaten crab from the North to South, East to the West and this one is one of the best (Really). The stewed tomatoes and okra I regularly cook at home, beats mine with a Creole seasoning. Very Good. I liked the Black-eye pea salad but I would expected to have more Black-Eye Peas. The Smoked Salmon Dip with fried saltine crackers was brilliant but fell flat. Husbands Fried Oysters very good, Mac N Cheese ok, Feta Cucumber salad good as were the hush puppies. I tried their Black Eyed Peas hummus, and if you ever get the opportunity, please stop by and try. 10 /10 now, let's get to what we had Friday night. We ordered wine, a starter and entrée, which were brought out at the same time. The crab claws were great but had so much broken shell in the batter. Found Magnolia Point when we searched for "catfish restaurant" in Birmingham. I'm happy to say we were pleasantly pleased! Although we came for the catfish they were out. We started with fried green tomatoes. They came out quickly and were good. They were topped with shrimp, avocado and a salsa type topping. I had the blackened fish sandwich with a side of coleslaw. The fish was grouper and was seasoned well, not at all too heavy. I was told the coleslaw was made with mayo base and vinegar but I didn't get much of either. It did have good flavor but was missing something. My husband had the shrimp po boy and fries. The sandwich was big and had large shrimp. It could definitely be shared with 2 sides! Our waitress, Moe was knowledgeable and nice. She explained that due to restaurant week they had been very busy making them run out of several items including the catfish. We were looking forward to trying this place! And then, a few days before Christmas I get a call that they are closed that day. The tuna dip was extremely salty and a few others at the table agreed. I mentioned it to the waitress and she said that is how it was made (no additional care to ask if I wanted something else). The house margarita was strong but was okay after some of the ice melted. The manager came by to ask how things were and I mentioned the salty tuna dip. She asked if I wanted to try something else like the hummus (black eye pea) and I gladly said i would like to try that. I appreciated her offering another item to try. I was hesitant to order a meal but I decided to try the catfish platter. The fried catfish was good, the baked potato and the mac and cheese were good. I think you have to ask for seafood . Mine had no seafood whatsoever but beef instead. Very flavorful with a slight kick . For the entree I ordered the catfish platter with fries and coleslaw . My husband order the same only with Mac and cheese . Food comes out very quickly , I wasn't even done with my gumbo . With the platter comes one huge filet . I was thinking it wasn't going to be enough but it was . I even had enough to take home . The fish was well seasoned and I really enjoyed the hush puppies. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw. My husband loved the Mac and cheese but wanted it a little more hot . It was warm but if hot would have been divine. One thing I like is the chef made his way around and introduced himself which was very nice. My only downfall about my visit was the waiter didn't have much to offer on recommendations being his first day nor did he offer any dessert. My overall experience was great . Shocked! Upon walking in we noticed that only 4 tables in the whole restaurant were occupied- strange for a Saturday night but we thought it's only 6:15-it's early. Husband and I were seated by a very nice hostess. We sat and sat with multiple servers passing us, the chef even walked by us once. Never once acknowledging us. Never got water, no one else even greeted us, there was nothing. Although we were when in a main walkway it's like we were on a deserted island. We decided there was much more we could do with our Saturday night so we walked out and let them know exactly why we were leaving. The hostess did apologize but in a sincere this happens all the time kind of a way! I cannot recommend Magnolia Point highly enough. I went with a group of 20 friends to watch BAMA football on their beautiful patio. The management was very easy to contact & setup the reservation. Our waitress, Heather provided exceptionally outstanding service. Heather waited on our group of 20 ladies, all with separate checks! She was constantly bringing drinks and food to our group on the patio. She was very friendly and prompt with our orders. Magnolia Point has a delicious menu. We ate hamburgers, hush puppies, gumbo, smoked tuna dip, fish tacos & humus. The patio & TV setup is the best in town. Our entire group had a great time & everyone wants to go back. There was only one thing that I'd like to change. The HUGE outside TV has an issue where it constantly displacing an audio error message on the screen. The staff told us that they'd been having this issue for a while. We certainly hope that it is fixed before we return. The gumbo was delicious We enjoyed the Po'Boy sandwiches... choice of shrimp, catfish or oysters.. or combination. Collard greens, black eyed peas salad were also good choices for sides.
