    Braised pork shoulder
    Letitia J.

Be sure to reserve way ahead of time, otherwise you'll either get a much later time, or need to try for another day. So many really cool dishes that I wanted to try them all! We got the Liver and Onions as the starter, and the Braised Pork Shoulder and Surf & Swamp as the two main entrees. The Liver and Onions were really good, but a couple of our livers were pretty undercooked. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be that way, but I liked the ones that were much more cooked, otherwise it just felt a little bit too moist. But it is a unique dish, and I do love liver so I'm glad we got it. The Braised Pork Shoulder was really good, I loved the veggies complimenting the meat. The wilted chard was SOOO good! But very flavorful dish. The Surf & Swamp was really good - I liked it more than the braised pork, actually. The gator balls were super good and delish - so soft! Loved the combo of all of the protein in there. Definitely would get it again. The servers there were so great and nice. The only complaint I have about the place is that it was just super loud. It was difficult to hear the person sitting across from me. It got better when it got less crowded, but I think it was just pretty echoey in there. But definitely cool vibe. I'd like to sit at the bar next time. There is a tiny parking lot by the restaurant, or there is street parking.

Blueprint has been around for a while now, but I only finally checked it out last month. You typically need a reservation to eat here. The inside was beautiful, and they also have plenty of outdoor patio seating. Service was excellent, the waiter made lots of great recommendations from drinks to appetizers. I don't quite remember the drink he recommended to me, but he got me something that was not on the menu. He recommended baked pimento cheese with bacon added to it. It was delicious! I haven't had pimento cheese warmed up before like this. For my entree, I ordered the chicken breast with green beans that were served on top of creamy grits and a wine butter sauce. It was so flavorful! I can't wait to come back here!

Can't remember the name, but it was good.

I enjoyed a fabulous early Birthday dinner with my daughter here recently. The wait staff here is excellent, efficient and friendly. The menu has a great variety of entrees. We enjoyed the melted Pimento Cheese with bacon appetizer. Just typing those words conjures an image of hot golden goo with bacon bits - need I say more? The bar has some delightful craft cocktails and the restaurant has a nice wine selection as well. We dined in the patio and it was a beautiful spring evening, a great atmosphere. I had a really nice steak and my daughter enjoyed the beef stroganoff. There were several fish dishes on the menu as well. Very nice food preparation and presentation.

Literally our favorite restaurant! Enjoy sitting at the bar for a more casual weekday dinner or outside on cool night. Our go to spot for dirty martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives!! Food is always delicious, if there are mushrooms on the menu GET THEM! Service is always top notch

Blueprint on 3rd continues to be one of our local "go to" restaurants and it never disappoints. To start, there is complimentary valet or if you're lucky enough you might find street parking. We were promptly greeted and seated in the back area of the restaurant. Our server recognized that he hadn't seen us in a while and welcomed us back. He noted a few additions to the menu (The menu changes often, while retaining some staples.) and he was able to answer any questions we had about particular ingredients, etc. We started with the goat cheee and pepper jelly "rangoons" - which was a tasty snack, followed by a delicious smoked confit chicken dip. Yum! I hope they keep this one on the menu. For entrees we chose the baked chicken breast with blackeye peas, collards, sweet potato mash and a chicken gravy... A very well thought out dish and a great take on the traditional New Years dinner. Don't underestimate this one... It's a winner even it's not the most visually appealing dish. Kudos to the chef for actually making blackeye peas taste good! We also had the prime beef burger, which I think is one of the best burgers in the city. Served in a small cast iron skillet atop fries. It's a real treat. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert. In sum... great service and an eclectically delicious menu in an appealing relaxed atmosphere... Blueprint is an excellent local choice! A+

This has got to be one of the best restaurants in Birmingham! My boyfriend and I have been twice and both times every single thing we have ordered is absolutely delicious

We have been here a handful of times and every time we have loved it. The service is always fantastic whether you are at a table or seated at the bar. The menu changes frequently which means you always get to try new great things! This time we tried the mushrooms appetizer and it was my favorite thing we have gotten. We have had the oysters rockefeller, the scallop crudo, the porkbelly, the spicy shrimp soup, the burger, and the beef stroganoff. This time we got the chicken dip and that was the only thing we have ever gotten there that was not as good. The stroganoff was the best entree I have had here it is sooo good. The spicy shrimp soup was VERY spicy so if you do not love spicy do not get it. If they have the prosciutto wrapped dates while you are there you must try it they are so innovative and delicious.

Flying to Birmingham for Thanksgiving, not only did my dining partner and I enjoy a delicious traditional turkey dinner with family, but we also had the opportunity to dine at two decidedly diverse ethnic restaurants as well. In between bites, we even managed to squeeze in a visit to the newly released Wicked at a local theater. On Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, our group gathered for dinner at Blueprint on 3rd, a popular brasserie-style eatery majoring in regional cuisines. Just how regional...? Try the Surf & Swamp (pictured) on for size... an intriguing combo of blackened catfish, shrimp, alligator, crawfish and sausage, all tossed together in a mixture of rice & red beans called a pirlou. The dish was nicely seasoned and quite tasty. But the texture - alligator being the chief culprit - left a good deal to be desired. Although mild in flavor, alligator meat is firm of texture and, depending upon the method of preparation, can be offputtingly tough and chewy - and that was the problem here. And, interestingly enough, the sausage suffered from a similar malady. Appetizers, however, were a definite high point. And our party of six chose several with sharing in mind. The Fried Louisiana Oysters swimming in a dill pickle remoulade sauce, for instance, were a definite hit... ditto the Smoked Georgia Quail with Conecuh sausage cornbread stuffing and Alabama white BBQ sauce. And the Air Fried Brussels Sprouts - companioned by toasted almonds, romesco (a tomato-based sauce that originated in Catalonia, Spain), and saffron aioli - while not exactly "southern" in nature, were delicious nonetheless (pictured). Other starter possibilities included such tempting items as Baked Pimento Cheese with charred pumpernickel bread, Pork Belly braised in dark rum & molasses, Cornmeal Breaded Fried Crab Claws with traditional cocktail sauce, and "Liver & Onions": crispy fried free-range chicken livers with onion straws and comeback sauce. With the arrival of the entrées, as you would undoubtedly surmise, choices became a bit more complex. It was my dining partner, for example, who had hemmed and hawed between the above-mentioned Surf & Swamp and the Shrimp & Grits Creole, before finally settling on the former. The Steak of the Day accompanied by roasted potatoes and tiara of creamed spinach received nothing but raves... Ditto the"It's Really Spicy Blackened Redfish. And the B3 Prime Beef Burger - pimento cheese, Worcestershire onions, bacon, pickled green tomato - quickly caught the attention of a younger member of our party (pictured). I must confess that I was torn between several possibilities. The Beef Tenderloin Stroganoff replete with local mushrooms, spinach, porcini cream, and egg noodles sounded mighty good; as did the Rainbow Trout swimming in a creole mustard vinaigrette. On the other hand, I really wanted to sample something that definitely had a local flair about it... and so I opted for the Southern Fried Mississippi Catfish (pictured). I've always enjoyed catfish, and the rendition served here was certainly no exception. The breading was lightly seasoned & splendidly crisp, the texture of the flesh firm yet tender, and the flavor decidedly un-fishy. Accompaniments included a delightfully tart, creamy coleslaw, house-made fries, and a seductive crawfish mayo. Simple yet sublime. Fortunately, we saved room for dessert, as the menu included several downright intriguing prospects. Namely: Ooey Gooey Butter Cake with Apricot Coulis, Sweet Potato Cheesecake with Cinnamon Anglaise, New Orleans Style Bread Pudding with Bourbon Brown Sugar, and Uncle Needmo's Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. Then, of course, there were a number of the usual suspects, such as Vanilla Crème Brûlée, Warm Apple Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream, and Carrot Cake with Pecans, Crème Anglaise. Quite the array... and more difficult choices. We finally settled upon the Bread Pudding and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie (pictured). Both of which received their share of oohs and aahs. Just a few closing notes... Our server was the absolute epitome of southern hospitality. She was young, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and spot on. A complete joy. And the ambiance - a kind of subtle southern take on equally subtle industrial chic décor - was quite nice as well. A most enjoyable evening at table.

I love the cajun twist to fine dining! Blueprint has a really creative menu that has fun entrees that are different from the regular paste, burgers, etc. offered at other upscale restaurants in the area. The waiters are all kind and knowledgable-- listen to their descriptions of the menu, everything is so in depth and layered. I ordered the "Surf and Swamp" and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try a variety of items. My friends also loved the scallops! The menu does rotate almost everyday, but there are a few staples that stay on the menu. Honestly, every drink, appetizer, and entree that we ordered was spectacular.

I have had blueprint on 3rd on my list of places to go, and I am so glad I got to try it. Located in downtown Birmingham, this restaurant has a lovely spot near the pepper place area. Street parking is available nearby, and valet is offered. We started off with a few appetizers and the baked pimento cheese was a favorite. It was warm, creamy, and paired so well with the bread. We also tried the fried pickles and another baked cheese dip which didn't blow me away. Tried the lobster bisque which was also warm and filling. For my main course, I ordered the steak medium rare, but it came out quite rare. This was a little disappointing since the rest of the main dish was very tasty. Service was excellent, and our server even offered for my steak to be cooked more. Ended our meal with gooey butter bake which was rich and served with a berry sauce. Hoping to return to try some of their other menu items!

My friend raved about this restaurant and invited me to dinner this past Friday night. My experience was mediocre. I'm water bougie and the water served taste like unfiltered faucet water. Presentation 10/10, taste 2/10. When I asked if they had bottled water, waitress Breanna clearly was offended and became dismissive and short. Ordered coke, it was flat. We ordered 2 orders of the biscuits, both came out burnt and hard. Breanna's reply was "the crunch makes it better" making those 7/10. I'd definitely order those again, I'd just ensure they were not crunchy. The burger was good, as well as the fries. The catfish fish was ordered crispy, it also came out not to my liking. My friends fish was tasty. And her pear cocktail she raved about. Ambiance was nice, we sat on the patio on a cool night.

Great ambiance, great service, and food was . 10/10 will be back. I don't typically choose Cajun on a menu like this but was not disappointed. Flavors combined perfectly.

Ask the Community - Blueprint on 3rd

What is the parking situation? Street parking or do they have a lot?

It's strictly street parking. The earlier you get there, the better your chances of finding a reasonably close spot.

    Is this restaurant kid friendly?

    Yes. Certainly

    Are jeans okay?

Yes. I've always worn scrubs since I go after work. But I've seen a variety of outfits from jeans and a collard shirt to slacks and button downs.

Is there a gluten free menu?

Is this a Jacket required establishment?

At Blueprint on 3rd (we call it B3!) we call it smart casual. We really don't mind as guys get off the golf course in their attire to business men in suits to just a comfortable night out. All we care is that you come relaxed and have fun!

Can you bring your own bottle of wine?

Of course, but there's a corking fee.

Met my wife here for lunch and it was a nice surprise. The inside is a little small, so if they are busy, you may have to sit outside. The inside is decorated... festive? And they have TVs on to catch a game if you're so inclined. I got the philly sandwich for my lunch. It was tasty, though I wish they had some slightly better hot sauce to put on it. I'd definitely come back though and try something else on the menu next time.

A lot of people are able to walk here from their homes, so it is truly a neighborhood bar. I would characterize the beer menu as limited, but they have enough variety for people to find something they would like. They have a great food menu, and everyone liked what they ordered. Personally, I like the buffalo style cauliflower appetizer (don't judge). Nice and spicy. The fried pickles were excellent as well. Note, order the fries, not the tots. You will thank me later. The only problem is that they don't have any wheelchair accessible parking (which is require by law). One person in our party uses a wheelchair full time, and had to park at the gas station next store. The sidewalks are partially blocked with planters, and it was hard for him to enter the premises.

People often host their own little parties and events at the picnic tables here. I came on a Sunday afternoon, and it seemed like a lot of families came for lunch and to hang out after church. The food here is certainly impressive food for a bar to me. I love the wood fired pizzas. I will say, I think the size is a bit awkward. They're a little too big to be a single serving, and a little too small to be for two people. The beer is all good. Service at the bar always friendly. The fries here are some of my favorite in town. Shoestring.

They've got a huge selection of beers and a full dinner menu, so there's something for just about everyone. Whether you're coming for drinks or planning to eat, you won't feel limited. Parking is plentiful, which is always a win in Birmingham, and there's plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. It works well for small groups or larger parties. One thing to know going in: this isn't really a full-service setup. You order and pick up your own food, and aside from someone occasionally clearing empty pint glasses, there's not much table service. We actually didn't receive utensils with our food and had to go back up to the counter to grab some. Not a huge deal, just something to be aware of. I ordered the catfish sandwich with fries. The sandwich itself was delicious -- crispy, flavorful, and satisfying. My only small gripe was that it came in a to-go box. I understand it probably makes cleanup easier for them, but it does take away a bit from the dine-in experience. The fries were shoestring style, which just aren't my personal favorite. They're fine, but I always feel like I need about three handfuls to feel satisfied. We went on a Saturday night and the brewery was packed -- and I mean packed. It was very loud and definitely more of a party atmosphere than a relaxing dinner vibe. If you're looking for a quiet night out, this probably isn't it. But if you want energy, beer, sports on TV, and a fun crowd, this place delivers. Overall, it's a great hangout spot to catch a game, grab a drink, and enjoy good food -- just expect a lively, high-energy scene.
