I got the tuna poke salad for dinner and it was okay... I felt like there was too much Leticia for the amount/ratios of tuna, toppings and dressing. For $22, it initially looks like you're getting a lot but really it's 90% lettuce. I feel like there could have been more lemon/acid to the dressing and more dressing overall the tuna was unseasoned and felt like the salad was lacking. Someone recommended this restaurant to us, and we were excited to try it. Even though the restaurant touts using local ingredients, it didn't seem like it. The only salad dressing they make is Caesar. We wanted to order eight wings with four in one sauce and four in another sauce but were told they couldn't do that. That is odd. And our food came out way too fast... almost like everything was precooked and heated in microwave. My husband ordered a burger, and it was very dry and very bland. The fries were also bland. He said it tasted like hospital food... very bland with no taste. I ordered fish 'n chips and substituted a side as for the fries. I only ate the salad. The fish looked like it was previously frozen... all three pieces were uniform in size and shape. The restaurant is inviting and love the bar area. The bartender was gracious and kind. I asked for a go box for my salad and fish. Hubby only ate half his burger and got a go box. We left there and walked a block away to Davenport's for a pizza. Surf Hound was so fun! I was in town visiting family and we wanted something fun and different than we can get back home. Surf Hound was the cutest place! The staff were all so friendly and helpful! The food was delicious and the cocktails were so good! We started with Brussel Sprouts, Oysters, and chips and salsa/guac/queso and they were all so good! For dinner I had the crab fried rice, and others got the wings, quesadilla, fries, and the gulfstream crunch. Everyone was thrilled with their meals! About two months ago my friend and I were trying to decide on a good Asian restaurant to eat at. So I Googled it and Surfhound and it's sister restaurant, which was walking distance from one another, came up. So we put it in GPS, found the closest parking spot between the two and walked over to Surfhound, but had a hard time pinpointing which door was the entrance. We ended up walking through the patio and bar twice. Finally someone showed up, a waitress, we think. So we explained to her what we were looking for. While she was speaking, a tall, man, appeared and interrupted the conversation. His demeanor and body language was not inviting. Even so we repeated the same to him, including the fact that we had just passed his sister restaurant of which he claimed NO affiliation, and didn't know the name of it. Our intentions were to eat a Surfhound. But based on this experience, we did not. After I responded during the conversation that it weird, I think the man realized that the way he acted was indeed weird, and he finally said in a way that sounded like an ultimatum, "if you would like drinks at the bar..." and rushed us away. read more

It's a Wednesday night and we had both worked late, so yes, we needed dinner. What else would we be there. It's in walking distance from our house. We rushed to order and then watched the bartenders rush to clean, turn chairs up, mopping etc. Every restaurant has a slow night. Either you are open or not. No one wants to spend $100 to be part of the clean up crew. Get a great bartender, advertise, play current music and be consistent. Don't punish customers for coming at 7:48 pm. That's ridiculous. If your hours say you are open then stay open even on a slow night. This restaurant has so much potential and unfortunately it's failing. The writing is on the wall. Very disappointing. It's brand new and had only been opened for a few days when we went, so they offered only limited options from their menu, but, you can see the whole menu which is surprisingly large for a relatively small spot. Once they are up to full speed there really will be something for everyone. We went with our teenage sons and all were satisfied! The highlights were the burger (my son added bacon!) and the chicken fingers (which I never recommend) because the breading/crust is perfect! I also recommend asking for some Ahbi sauce for the chicken fingers - it's the BEST! All in all, if the goal is to create a comfortable neighborhood restaurant you can go with or without kids that has yummy food, they succeeded! Lovely new establishment in our favorite part of town!! I was so happy they had space for us on Friday night as it seemed packed, but we were lucky to get the cozy corner couch seats at the far end interior. We really adored the vibes and how family-friendly Surf Hound was. We were greeted & treated kindly all throughout our visit- our waiter even went back to the kitchen to ask about a dietary accommodation before saying if it was or wasn't possible. The quesadilla was nice, I loved the added peppers and caramelized onions! They weren't anything special, but still good. The fried rice was much better than expected, definitely was a fan of the fried egg on top. I will say, there was a QUITE strong odor that accompanied this dish that made it really hard to enjoy...but we were able to push past it and take the food for what it was. It did take us a minute to dive into the rice as we worried the smell was indicative of something gone off, but we figured in the end a place like this wouldn't serve something low quality, and it was quite tasty. WOW!!!! Abhi has opened the restaurant Surf Hound in Mountain Brook Village. It is located in the former location of Dram & Carrigans. Even though Surf Hound has only been open for a few weeks the 5 of us decided to walk up to the village and try it out. We arrived about 6:30 pm. The place has a fun light vibe and it was packed! Surf Hound has more seating than the previous restaurants. The employees were all VERY friendly and nice. That includes the hostess, the bartender & our waiter. The drink menu is great! We ordered drinks from the bar & only had to wait a short time before a table was available. Our waiter was very friendly & efficient. Brought everyone water w/out even asking. And the menu!!! It is great! Our group got the bison burger, a jasmine rice dish and the TUNA POKE SALAD!! I am still amazed at how much tuna it had and how delicious it was. Our food was delivered promptly and was delicious. I'm so impressed at how great our first time to eat at Surf Hound was. Surf Hound has been open for 8 days and is officially on their game! My boyfriend and I had read some unsavory reviews on Yelp but decided to try it anyway. I'm glad that we called on the way there and put our name in - it was a Friday night and the hostess said the wait would be 45min to an hour. Thankfully, it was more like 25, and we were seated upon arrival. Our waitress, Kathy, was so attentive and answered our many menu-related questions with clarity and confidence. We started with the Frosé and the Bro Punch, which were both delicious. The Brussel sprouts are to die for. For entrees, I had the Gulfstream Crunch and he had the Founder burger. My sandwich was crispy, flavorful, and very balanced. My boyfriend said this was the most flavorful burger he had ever eaten - a huge compliment! Every staff member who tended to us made sure we were enjoying our food and had everything we needed. The arrival of both food and drink were timely, and each course was spaced out perfectly. The barrel fries were also good, if not a little ballpark-esque (instead of surf-y). As for ambiance, it was a little loud, but not crazy enough to detract from the experience. Blue cheese dressing was unpleasant, as was the burger due to the overwelming amount of carmalized onions. Service was ok. Why would you have a restaurant that doesn't serve tea (sweet, or unsweet)? We waited another ten minutes as people all around us were served, and we sat there as if we were invisible. I've never been so offended in my life.
