Wall decor in bathroom. This is French?

This place is way overrated. The interior is known to be quirky, but it appears to me to be tacky and cheap. Half of the food was very good, but some of it was too salty. The server was very difficult, had such a frown on her face, and I also got the feeling I would not be welcome with my group that I reserved for. There's actually another group that I'm in that they don't even let come there because they "only order water." This is literally what I was told.

So we came to Chez Lulu on a last minute whim around 7PM on a Sunday night and got seated immediately. We had an amazing server who made the best recs (especially with the desserts!). We sat outside and the ambiance was definitely lovely with French music playing overhead. I ordered the 1/2 soup and sandwich combo and got the garlic soup and pressed Turkey Panini. If I'm being honest, I thought the food was good but definitely not amazing. For dessert we got the almond bread pudding and the chocolate almond Tortlette. We will definitely be back for desserts next time!

How have I not reviewed this place? It's been here forever and for good reason. Creative, fresh and enticing menu options that in my experience are always good. A cheese plate called cheese lulu, the garlic soup, the fresh bread from Continental Bakery next door, the French inspired deserts, the wine list, the pro-level cocktails, the light sandwiches with creative ingredients to keep you on your toes, the atmosphere, the service, the reasonable prices....what else do you really need? Overall a great spot for a quick lunch, or a slow lingering lunch where you consume several bottles of wine. The menu is thoughtful and loaded with things that should appeal to everyone. The place just doesn't disappoint.

My favorite place for date night! Ambiance is off the charts. Food is delicious, especially the dessert. Service is always good too, especially with allergies.

Was so excited to catch up with friends in such a lovely looking area. There's no other way to say it except that this was the biggest disappointment. We had to ask multiple times to get waited on after sitting as our server disappeared and never took our orders. We then waited a full hour for our sandwiches in the almost empty place; all sandwiches were clearly grilled and made earlier, but just not sent out to our table on time as they were ice cold. The food itself was not worth the money whatsoever, extremely bland and something I'd expect from a hospital café, not a restaurant. The garlic soup I got on the side was room temp at best; I've had better soups at Panera. Our waitress also took my soup before I was even done with it? We later had to once again hail down a waiter to get our check as ours was engrossed in a conversation with the table next to us. My friend was also charged $5 for a single tea bag that you could by a full box of for $2 at Walmart. Waste of time and money!

We ran in at 8:30, right before close, to get coffee and dessert. Even though it was the end of the night, the staff were all so friendly and welcoming. Their dessert menu is so vast, they actually care about giving you options! I had the turtle sundae, it was delicious.

Birmingham has some great restaurants, but Chez Lulu has been my go to date night restaurant for years, and probably my favorite in town, just because of the experience. I love lingering over a bottle of wine in the eclectic, artsy, and intimate atmosphere; it's like stepping out of Birmingham and into a Paris bistro. A few of my all time favorites: the Continental Bakery bread served as an appetizer; The Goat in the Orchard Salad; the North African Pulled Lamb sandwich; the Mediterranean Sampler. Desserts are always good, as is the coffee.

This is a unique restaurant with a French cafe style.

If you are a fan of Continental Bakery and their pastries, desserts, and loaves of bread, you will have to try Chez LuLu which is owned by the same people. This is a French cafe style restaurant located in the English Village area. They have soups, tartes, salads, and sandwiches. They also have a bar, serve a Sunday brunch and offer dinner. On the downside, this is a cozy place with tiny tables and not much room between tables. Definitely don't bring a large group. Also, parking can be a real problem! The day I went, my friend recommended the 3 salad plate. With this option, you get to pick three of your favorite salads from the menu and try each one. Each salad was very good and the plate was definitely enough for a meal. Overall a great experience and a fun place for a girl's lunch. It definitely reminded me of Paris from the food that was served to the music in the background.

For some reason, I tend to end up here after nights of partying to get a hair of the dog in the shape of Kronenberg on draft and their killer North African lamb sandwich. The socca preparation is also just wonderful, those chickpea crepes are simply phenomenal. From the food items, those would be my recommendations without hesitation. Service is always great and the place is one of the coziest establishments I've visited. The industrial inspired furniture with table legs from pipes is not what one would typically associate with cozy, but they manage to pull it off. The design is actually inspired by that of a French brothel, a risqué connotation that permeates into the creative menu. Parking is usually plentiful in this quaint little mountain brook village and clientele consists of local residents. Overall, Carole Griffin, the chef and mastermind here brings some really interesting Mediterranean flavors to an area that is filled with traditional southern food, which I welcome with open arms. A wonderful establishment and a spot I will surely return to.

When you walk in, you're greeted with a warm welcome and transported into an old, cozy cafe in a small French town. Our waitress, Holly, was delightful and knowledgeable about the menu. I started with a Pimm Rose Spritz and thought it was light and refreshing - I was afraid it'd taste like an Aperol spritz but it didn't - no bitterness at all. Mom got an alpine daiquiri and raved about it. We opted for escargots, a fresh baguette, and marinated olives as apps and couldn't have loved them more. The bread was warm and made a nice vehicle for the garlic sauce leftover from the escargots. I got the trout amandine and it was as divine as I remember. I had this dish back in 2020 (I know that specifically because we had to sit outside in a plastic tent to dine here) and have been thinking about it ever since. Would highly recommend. The trout is buttery and flaky and has a light almond-like sauce with slivered almonds on top. Mom got the roasted chicken and veggies and loved how it was cooked to perfection. Everything is so simple yet exquisite. Parking wasn't a huge issue, especially for it being downtown. There are spots in front of the building that you pay for on an app (it was $2) and they offered valet as well. I would absolutely have a reservation (it may even be required). We went on a Tuesday at 4:45 and it was packed by 5. We will be back time and time again!

The outside patio was nice and covered. Next time I will request to sit outside. We started with the sourdough bread which I highly recommend! There was enough pieces to have one while you waited for your dinner, and to save one to eat with your dinner. My husband ordered the deviled eggs and really enjoyed them. For our entree, we shared the roasted chicken. It was a half chicken with lemon, garlic, shallots and potato gratin. It was plenty for both of us. We even had leftovers. This is probably because of the appetizers and we had stopped for drinks at Cayo Coco before dinner. We usually skip dessert, but my husband really wanted to try the chocolate custard, bittersweet chocolate custard with chantilly cream. The presentation was beautiful. I had a couple of bites and it also tasted amazing. Our waiter recommended a dessert wine that paired with the custard. He let us try a couple of sips, and the sweet fruitiness really made a difference. The service was amazing. We will definitely be back.

Attentive without being obnoxious, in depth explanations of items on the menu with great recommendations! We started with a half dozen raw oysters and the pork belly. The fennel and orange mixture was a unique blend that really complemented the smokiness of the pork belly, Our steaks were melt in your mouth good. Cooked perfectly! I wished I could've just taken a massive bowl of the macaroni and cheese home. The char on the broccolini balanced the richness of the macaroni. They were sadly out of the crème brûlée, so instead I had the vanilla and peach gelato, while my husband had the chocolate l'orange cake. The vanilla gelato had the perfect rich vanilla taste. It's spectacular every time. The rotating menu keeps things fresh and interesting, and every dish we've had has been thoughtfully prepared and consistently excellent. The kitchen is clearly doing something special and it's a big reason we keep coming back. This visit, however, the service was unusually slow. Our dinner lasted about two hours (7:30-9:30) on a night that didn't seem particularly busy. There was a noticeable lull in the dining room with quite a few open tables, yet it still took nearly 40 minutes between finishing our appetizers and receiving our main courses. The pacing just felt off compared to past visits. Valet (which I understand isn't directly run by the restaurant) was also a bit slow -- about a 15 minute wait to get our car at the end of the night. We were there on a weeknight and were one of two tables. If you're big on ambiance, Reve falls a little flat due to its location in the Pizitz, but I wasn't particularly bothered by it. We had the 6-course menu with a cocktail pairing. The food was mostly good, but none of it was great. The dishes looked beautiful, and the flavor combinations were creative, but not always complementary. Of the 6 courses, only 2 were memorable, and it was because they were disappointing. The fish course was not worth finishing, and I wasn't looking for more of any of the other courses. The best thing was the milk bread, but it did not pair well with the condiment it was served with. The cocktails were better than the food. The service was also mid. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, but the pacing of the meal was off. We had long waits between some courses-- not exorbitantly, but we chose the 6-course because we DIDNT want a 3+ hour meal on a weeknight. We also preordered a soufflé when we first arrived, since they take some time to prepare. Despite that, our server waited until we were finished eating to order it. It took FOREVER to get, and wouldn't you know, it was overcooked. All in all, it was an above average meal, but for the price it did not rise to the level of other fine dining experiences. IMO, the Michelin hype is resulting in high expectations for Reve, but the execution isn't quite there.
