Half Italian - side Caesar salad
Gabe P.

I enjoyed my first time visit to Bruto. I ordered the half Italian with a side Caesar salad. Chips are the standard side. I really enjoyed the sandwich and its quality ingredients & bread. The salad was just ok.... I wish there had been a little bit more dressing. I guess I could have asked for a little more. The portions were just enough and I left satisfied. The vibe here is comfortable & casual. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. I love the decor and it kind of felt like I was sitting in someone's dining room. Can't wait to return to try some other menu options.... The pizza looked yummy!!! P.S. There's a private parking lot so don't worry , you'll be able to find parking!

Food first, thoughts after... After finding out mom's basement had a coffee shop, I immediately had to go try it. The cafe was spacious and the decor gave the same vibes as mom's but at the same time had its own splash of color. The breakfast and drink I got was delicious. Easily accessible parking and plenty of seating area!

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for lunch during the Mom's Basement vintage market, which was bustling. The set-up of Bruto is purely like a coffee shop. Order at the counter, tables and some comfier seating for people to work longer stretches. The staff was nice, menu design very of-the-neighborhood. This place fits right in with the Avondale crowd. I wasn't very hungry, but had a half caesar salad and a chocolate chip cookie. The salad was very good, and a great deal for it's size. I'd love to have the option to add chicken or steak and make that a full meal. My buddy got the meatball sub. I will totally be back to order this, it looked so good. Next time I'm super hungry, you'll know where to find me. I would definitely do work here, too. It's nice and quiet, easy parking, cool (temperature and vibe) space. I love what they're doing with this strip of Avondale/Crestwood! I'll certainly be back to try out the restaurant that replaced Tropicaelo (I miss you), and on the edge of my seat to see what those renovations in the old Seasick Records space are going to become!

Just had a light, refreshing lunch at this place and am happy to report that it was amazing. To start, everything was super fresh. I had the daily special sandwich. I can't remember everything that was on it but it had burrata, prosciutto and basil on their house-made bread and it was fantastic. So fresh, so crisp, so flavorful. Exactly what you need when you're hungry on a hot day and are looking for something light but full of flavor. Truly legit. After that I had their affogato and it hit the spot. Would definitely order either again. The space is open, inviting and airy with tall ceilings and thoughtful decorations that add character without cluttering the space. There is lots of seating and it appears to be good for individuals or groups. Seems like an excellent place to get some work done if that's your thing. They've got pizza by the slice, (which looked great), scones and other pastries and some vegan options as well. There is a selection of canned sodas and bottled drinks that includes things like Topo Chico and those old school, glass-bottle cokes that you don't always see. There is a full coffee menu as well and the brew I had was delicious. So whether it's coffee and scones, or pizza and a soft drink, or a light sandwich or salad for lunch they've got you covered. Overall they've done really well in creating a nice space and in serving up a solid menu of high quality things. They're baking their own bread and making their own pizza dough, they're brewing up high quality espresso, they're making prosciutto sandwiches with basil so fresh it'll light up your taste buds. Would definitely recommend.

What a very welcomed and unexpected surprise! Some friends and I were looking for a last minute place for lunch. We had all heard good things about this place and decided to see for ourselves. You can smell the fresh baked bread soon as you enter. The food portions are large in comparison to the price you pay. Perfect for sharing or taking some back home. Don't forget to try their cookies and scones. I have to go back and try their weekend french toast options soon.

New business in town. Literally the best scone I've ever had in my life. Most are dry and boring. The rosemary chive scone is so perfectly crumbly and moist. Delicious flavor! They made me a decaf french press, also delightful. There's a large community table in the middle of the room, a couch and comfy chairs in the front corner by the windows. Tons of daylight pours in through the front window walls. All the food looks amazing. I want to go back for the margherita pizza! And if the cookies are as good as the scones, I'm in trouble. The crew taking care of us were pros. I would have never known this was their first day! Excited to support a new, local business! Always!

Il Capitano

I love Bruto! It was suggested to me by a student and I was hesitant. I don't love sandwich places. I've been back half a dozen times. I get the Il Capitano. The crispy prosciutto pairs well with the aioli. The bread is thick and hearty. I'd like the slices to be a touch thinner, but nothing a good smashing doesn't fix. The sandwich is easily in my top 3 in Birmingham. Some weekends I drive 20 minutes from Hoover just to get it, because nothing else will do. The Caesar salad side has bold flavor, but sometimes is dressed a bit too much and makes the lettuce limp and soggy. The seating options are better for multiple people rather than a single diner, but there's a lot of different options -- from comfy couches and chairs to the large communal table in the middle. Thank you to Bruto for making me love sandwiches.

This place is so great! The pizza is already made and then they warm it up, and I went with the margherita pizza. The crust was so crunchy and the dough was light. The topping were great, and I loved the balsamic glaze on it. I also got half of the TMP sandwich, and it was really good. One thing though I didn't realize until halfway through my sandwich- there were supposed to be sun-dried tomatoes on it and there were just regular tomatoes, but no big deal. The pesto tasted fresh and it was such a yummy sandwich. Also, I loved the vibe of the place. The touches of art and local pieces were so cool. This is definitely a place to try!

This was the spot we would all come to to do homework. It's still got that same warmth and charm. I came in on a Wednesday morning to sit and do some work. I ordered a cappuccino, bran muffin, and a breakup cookie to take home. The cappuccino is just as expected. Served at the perfect temp, great flavor. The bran muffin, which was my attempt to be healthy, was really a delicious stand-out. I would definitely get that again. And, of course, the breakup cookies are some of the best cookies in town. They bake all of the baked goods in-house, I believe, which gets a round of applause from me. A lot of the recipes are still the same ones I remember from 7 years ago. One thing I noticed that's even BETTER than I remember was the books and gift selection. A lot of the books caught my eye. It's a great curation of fiction, non, memoirs, birding books, children's, etc. They also carry the Village Apothecary candles, which are made locally and have some packaging I really love. Church Street is one of the Birmingham staples. I hope they're open for a million more years. They do what they do exceptionally well.

There wasn't line when we got there but the crowd usually follows us for some reason so by the time we left there was standing room only and a line out the door. The bakery items were very fresh and tasty. I loved the Swedish gingerbread cookies - light and crisp. The lemon bar was delicious. They also have sandwiches that liked really good. Coffee - I got a vanilla latte extra sweet (no lavender) and my daughter said it was one of the best. I thought it was pretty good. I would go again when back in Birmingham!

The young girl making the coffee was loudly talking about someone who messed up their coffee order this morning and how frustrated she was. Leaving the one guy serving the one customer. It was 11:30 am on a rainy day. Figured I could do without a cream cheese croissant and coffee and left. Had already waited 5 as the only other person in there and did not want to wait another undetermined amount of time. I know one of the bakers. It's a shame the front has been so bad these last two times.

More of a simple southern antique style. Baristas were extremely helpful and patient as I pondered my order! I ended up ordering a delicious warm breakfast sandwich and a cold brew to drink with it! SOO delicious!! I am a sucker for a good breakfast and coffee! The menu was large and well diverse: they even had a cortado on the menu which I cant get at all coffee shops!   I am surprised not more people know about the place. I had never heard of it until I was scrolling through highly rated coffee shops on Yelp! The space inside is large and can seat lots of people! For being in Birmingham this surprised me; I feel like most coffee shops here are fairly small.    I also appreciated how relaxed and welcoming the environment felt. It would be such a great spot for studying, meeting a friend, or even having a casual work meeting. The music wasn't too loud, and everything felt clean and well-kept. Overall, I would definitely come back and recommend The General to anyone looking for a cozy, charming coffee shop with great food and even better service.

It's such a unique place with it being both a restaurant as well as a shop. It's got a very nostalgic feel to it with the decor and items for sale. I saw a couple students but when I visited I mostly saw upper class looking Caucasian ladies. Being very laid back, down to earth and often times socially awkward, I admit that it felt a little hoity toity, while also being a very welcoming spot. It's hard to explain, so you'll have to check it out for yourself. Also worth noting for the plus size community: the chairs are not plus size friendly. (See zoomed in photo) The employees there were on top of their jobs and super helpful. They cleaned up the tables that emptied quickly, as the lunch crowd trickled in. The food was good. I loved the creative presentation of the sampler plate! The pimento cheese was very cold and hard to spread but I still it. The toast triangles were delicious! While they offer a lot of excellent coffee choices. I only got a 1/2 & 1/2 tea. Even the restroom was really neat with the retro decor. I'd definitely go back.
