Wow, after visiting their other locations in town, this place is a total letdown! No kitchen? But you somehow have pastries wtf? Old ratty bathroom stolen from a dive bar. Staff is super friendly. I had the barista explain to me how they make halfcaf lattes - she told me they pull both a shot of caffeinated espresso and a shot of decaf and then put one shot of caffeinated in and one shot of decaf in...but then I watched her make it and she only put the one shot of caffeinated espresso in and didn't pull a decaf shot. Then was condescending when I wanted it remade. Guys - a halfcaf latte is when you pull a shot of caffeinated espresso and put ONE shot in and then pull a shot of DECAF espresso and put ONE shot in. No one wants a cup of milk with just one shot of espresso in it. You're also charging me for a full latte and then only giving me one shot when they come with two. I know it's extra work to pull that decaf shot - and I know when you pull a shot it's for 2 shots so it seem like waste, but that's a halfcaf latte. Don't explain to me what a halfcaf is, then not make it that way and be condescending when I want it remade. I ended up getting a refund and walking out. That's the last time I'll be coming to Ohenrys. read more

Ordered a 2% cafe au lait. Literally the worst cup of coffee I have ever had from a coffee shop. Unfortunately, I didn't take a sip at the counter because I had no reason to expect it wouldn't be at least good as it usually is at O'Henry's. I could taste a hint of cinnamon and there were more than a few grounds at the bottom of the cup. I threw it away when I got home, I didn't even bother to drink the rest of it. Waste of money. Don't tell the other locations...but this one's my favorite! I adore the SOHO area and have frequented it even more these last six months since I box at the studio down the street from O'Henry's. It's a cute spot that I love to study in or just relax at since it's also so close to UAB. The staff are without a doubt my favorite part-not sure the names but there's two in particular that are absolute beams of sunshine. Always joking around and smiling behind the counter no matter the time of day. On my most recent visit, I decided to be *that* patron and ask for what the staff recommended, and was greeted with such happiness! She asked if she could make me something special after figuring out some of my basic preferences and even said she'd make me something else free of charge if I didn't love it- spoiler: loved it! She was also extremely tentative to the fact I can't eat pork just from noticing my hijab. I saw that the egg bites were freshly made and ordered one, and very sweetly & apologetically she responded saying she figured I wouldn't be able to have them due to them containing sausage. The first thing you notice when you step into O'Henry's is the SMELL. It's rich in that beautiful coffee aroma that made me want a cappuccino in my hand that very moment. Okay, that a little intense, but it's true!! They have TONS of options to purchase coffee by the pound - decaf, light, medium, dark, Sumatra, flavors like blueberry and cinnamon streusel, coffee from all over Africa and South America, and more. It was extensive! And while we didn't try any food, they had an extensive menu of snacks, pastries, etc to choose from. And they looked delicious. An interesting story of Dr Henry Bright, a former orthodontist, who learned all aspects of coffee production and opened this landmark location in 1993. Since then, the world has gained Starbucks and nearly every street corner now has a coffee shop. O'Henry's however, is surprisingly as relevant as ever despite the massive evolution of coffee industry that happened since them. The coffee is simply put, spectacular. Honestly, it is a bit hard to pinpoint on what makes it so good. Maybe it's the local roasting facility or the sourcing of the beans. The result however, is unparalleled. The taste is very rich and decadent. Thus, the only regret is discovering O'Henry a bit late, but this coffee shop is an absolutely must for pleasure. read more

The coffee is really bad but Gage Tutor, the new shift lead/manager in training, treated us as if we were part of the O'Henry's family! He picked me up out of my wheelchair and carried me to the counter and then to my seat because my chair would not make it past the threshold of the store. He handled me with care and grace all with a smile on his face! He did not curse aloud while guests were present, which is unlike managers of O'Henry's past! Very nasty managers they've had there. My first time here to catch up with a friend ( for dry January). The vibe: great! You could tell this was the local hangout spot. People knew everybody! Decor was super unique, and really gave a lot of character to the place. While I didn't eat anything, the coffee was just meh. Nothing horrendous; nothing great. Pretty average. It was my favorite study spot in college, it was my parent's favorite coffee shop in town, and it's a frequent stop if I travel through Birmingham for work. You can't beat the coffee or ambiance. Their drinks can be decadent and almost dessert-like, but even their classic black coffee is special. Every time I've walked through the door, it's like walking into a Dickens novel. The staff is friendly and efficient, even though they're about to close, they are ready with a smile and kind word. A cute coffee shop to study at, but finding a spot can be pretty difficult since it's such a popular shop! It's also a pretty cute place for dates since there's a lot of small 2-people tables. I love that it's nearby a few spots to grab food at, so if you need a quick lunch break, you have a good number of options. My go-to is the Iced Vanilla Coffee Royale...SO GOOD. Staff is also super friendly. During one of my visits, I accidentally spilled my drink right after getting it, and they super quickly cleaned up the mess I made and gave me another one. This was just Meh for me. I wanted to love it but it was just a-ok. The shop itself is cute and has lots of seating though. I had the turtle coffee with almond milk and it was way too sweet for my liking (I could barely taste the coffee) and the milk was way way way too hot! I was kind of excited though when he asked if it was for here or to go and I said here (hoping for a mug)... unfortunately it was not in a mug! Just a regular to go cup! When I go to a coffee shop and see other people with mugs and I say that it will be for here, I just assume they will give me a mug... so I was disappointed! Maybe you have to ask??? I don't know?? First of all let me say, I am an avid coffee drinker. My day doesn't start without a latte. Ive been all over the US, and with every place I have been, I have visited an independently owned coffee shop. O'Henry's is one of the best coffee places I have ever been to. I usually get their unsweetened iced lattes or coffee. Both are a dream! I bought a bag of hazelnut blend coffee to have at home for the weekends, and I have never had a coffee with so much flavor in my life! I will always be a supporter of O'Henrys! However, sometimes I am not in the Homewood/MountainBrook area. But... There is a coffee shop south of Birmingham in a little town called Chelsea. It is called Ground Up coffee, and it is located in Snider's pharmacy. They have O'Henry's coffee distributed to them, and that is what they use! So if you're south of Birmingham and you love O'Henry's as much as I do, give Ground Up a try! O'Henry's also has some of the best baked goods on the planet. So I grew up with the O'Henrys craze. Some days were good. Some days not so good. I love the cappuccino chocolate muffins and I discovered my favorite drink of all time, a London Fog, here and am eternally grateful. However.... The drinks are way overpriced. I can get my drink and breakfast at another local coffee place for the same price of just the drink. They also no longer carry my favorite drink because they only serve Front Porch Teas (our fav pepper place tea). It does not taste as good and as a non coffee drinker, I'm disappointed in the lack of options. No more earl gray tea hurts my soul. My final complaint is there inconsistencies in prices. Custom made drinks are charged differently and once I asked them about it and didn't really get much of an answer. Overall I'll still treat myself to a muffin but my drink days are gone. read more

O'Henry's for me fell into the range of "I've had better craft coffee, usually from hipster joints, but it's certainly better than Starbucks." This is probably the best coffee house in Homewood, maybe even in the whole Birmingham area. Exactly this one - not the other O'Henry's that is near Brookwood village. They have very good cinnamon rolls, carrot cakes and amazing berry muffins and chocolate biscotti. Their coffee maybe not as good as in some places in Seattle, but it's still good enough to be enjoyed. They make a lot of interesting coffee-based drinks that are a nice change to your regular latte. Cool local coffee shop. This is the only location I've been too. I loved the inside decor. I enjoyed just looking at the different antiques hanging on the walls. The inside feels a little cramped though, the tables are kind of packed together. The coffee is good and came out hot. I tried the snickerdoodle latte. I thought it would be sweeter but it has a nice strong coffee flavor. I also tried the lemon blueberry scone which was awesome. Love coming here when in B'ham. Great coffee, great vibe (always a combo of college students and us older coffee lovers) and a couple of great locations! We prefer the SoHo location to Brookwood Village, though I can't say which, if either, is better run. Downtown just has that "urban village" feel you don't get from the chain cafes. Never been disappointed with their dark roast, apparently roasted on premises. And Kimberly loved that she can get heavy cream (as opposed to half and half) in specialty drinks. One problem with this place: because there's nothing like it back home, it now requires a travel budget line item. I'm writing this from the outside table at the downtown location, sipping Tanzanian Peaberry, fifth visit this weekend. We may need an intervention. read more

That's why I've made O'henry's one of my top meeting places. Indoor and outdoor seating makes it easy to find the right spot to chat with a client or friend. While I'm a black coffee guy, It's hard to miss the creatively named specialty drinks on the menu such as the Snickerdoodle Mocha, Cool Caramello, and the Cinnamon Roll Espresso. O'Henrys is a great coffee place for you to visit if you like the taste of stronger coffee! Their coffee has a very distinct flavor, which I really like. I always order an iced caramel latte w almond milk; you can never go wrong with this order! The staff was very friendly and quick, they make the experience so much better. COVID precautions are followed, the staff wears masks and there are plastic barriers between customers and staff. As for sustainability, I wish they would use the plastic lids you can sip out of rather than using a straw, but they let you pick up however many you need rather than giving you too many, which I appreciate. All in all, I recommend a stop here! read more

My favorite thing about this O'Henry's, is the window seating out front. Honestly, such a lovely spot to enjoy a cup of coffee, get work done and/or people watch. The pastry case is usually always stocked every time I've visited and service has been always consistent and fast. The only negative thing I can say is that seating can be very limiting at times, especially during peak hours. read more
