One last stop before heading home from Bham! I'd had this spot bookmarked and it was a short drive from where we ate, so we headed on over to get some dessert. This gelateria is tucked away in a cute area. The road is like...cobblestone? Or very uneven and narrow at least. Wasn't super friendly for our car. Probably better to walk from somewhere else nearby. The inside was super weirdly hot, which was unexpected. Fortunately we were getting our goodies to go. There's very limited seating inside but you could maybe grab a spot if you wanted to. I ordered a scoop of hazelnut gelato and husband got chocolate. The flavor selection is somewhat simple and limited but that's not necessarily a bad thing - product seems very high quality. Service was acceptable, quiet and matter of fact. The serving size was generous. Both gelatos were good, but my hazelnut was great! It was so pleasantly nutty and sweet, and the texture was amazing. I'd definitely order this treat again! Give them a try if you're a gelato fan. Yum! read more

Super kind staff. Very patient and let us try multiple flavors. It's always nice when people are willing to engage with you, ask you how your day was and learn more about you. The gelato has the perfect soft texture and isn't too heavy on your stomach. I felt refreshed and energized after eating it. The lemon lavender goat cheese ice cream had a delicious citrusy flavor. The goat cheese was subtle. The lavender flavor shined through. The blood orange is delicious, not too much of a bitterness or a bite to it. Perfectly balanced flavors. Cannella Gelato is such a gem tucked right on historic Morris Ave; the location alone makes it worth stopping by, but the experience sealed the deal for me. I ordered the affogato for the first time, and it was absolutely amazing; creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced. I'm pretty sure I finished it in under five minutes! The person at the counter was super helpful and kind, especially since it was my first time trying an affogato. They walked me through what it was and even suggested the best flavor pairing. You can really tell they care about creating a good experience. The space itself feels cozy and inviting perfect for a quick dessert stop after dinner downtown or a stroll through Morris Ave. I'll definitely be back to try more flavors, but the affogato has officially become my new favorite treat. read more

We came here looking to cool down and after a visit to the Civil Rights Institute. It was nice to get off our feet and enjoy the covered outdoor eating area in the old building nestled between it and another restaurant. It is on a cobblestone road that was nice and bumpy, but we were able to find a great parking spot right in front on this Saturday afternoon. Normally, gelato place have standard flavors, but htis place has come unique ones. They are great with sampling and I tried the mint stracciatella, which was unique and very strong on the mint flavoring, which I love! I got the next size up from the kids size and they let you select up to 2 flavors with this size, so I got that and the espresso chip, which had little chips that were the perfect size for that texture to hit just right in your mouth! read more

Italian gelato in the heart of Birmingham! Based on the natural colors of their flavor selection, I'm assuming it's fairly authentic. I did a split flavor kids scoop and it was a perfect amount for a post-lunch treat. They also let you sample which is a plus! Pricing is pretty standard, nothing baffling. There's plenty of space to sit outside or inside. Birmingham has some pretty great ice cream spots, and I'd this one to the list! read more

Will preface by saying that I've been to Italy and have had authentic gelato: We had just finished dinner and were craving something savory & sweet. We knew of a few different spots that served sweet treats, but wanted something new. After pulling into a handicap parking spot (mistakenly) and searching for something, I found Canella Gelato. When we arrived and walked in, we were warmly greeted by staff and were shown a multitude of options. Everything looked delicious so, of course, the patron had the option (privilege) of sampling the gelato. I decided to get the cookies & cream/strawberry combo. Fiancé decided on coffee alone. Although the strawberry and cookies & cream were very good, I got a taste of her coffee and I was astounded.. I do not like coffee flavored anything outside of the actual stuff, but this was some of the best tasting gelato I've ever had. 5/5 for sure. We've been twice and found that the service, product, and ambience are the same and that's exactly what we desire. read more

I had no idea this little slice of heaven was here. Very clean and quaint shop along the cobblestone roadway. I loved that they let you have samples of the different flavors. I love traveling on the cobblestone road to this gelato shop lol it is so cute inside and the staff was very patient. I ordered two flavors, the lemon, lavender, honey and goat cheese and the mango. The gelato was really good and I can't wait to visit this location again. Inside is small with limited seating. Street parking is available. Definitely recommend this gelato shop. read more

Gelato without the cult indoctrination (if you know, you know) WOW I came in here on a whim after dinner across the hall. I love the concept of the mercantile and the whole aesthetic. Such a cute, clean shop, with FANTASTIC hand made gelato. Customer service was lovely and so patient while my husband and I each tried several flavors before selecting ours. My husband had jasmine and cappuccino, I had stracciatella and chocolate sorbet (WOW for a sorbet, my mind was blown). We already can't wait to come back and try more flavors! Morris Avenue is still a treat to travel down. The environment is priceless. This place is on the far side of it. We had a sweet tooth and decided to satisfy it here. They let you taste the flavors. I decided to go with mango. Next time I will try two flavors. It was really good. Only thing was they didn't have lids to go over the cups so be ready to eat it there if you are driving. read more

I'm in town from Atlanta for work & stumbled upon this place close to my Airbnb. As a newbie to Alabama, I had no idea a lot of spots stay closed throughout the week but this gelato spot is open on a Monday which I'm so thankful for. The service here was exquisite and they let me try multiple flavors before deciding. They have a lemon lavender honey goat milk gelato and it is AMAZING!!! It's something I'll probably be dreaming about back in Atlanta so it's a for sure place to stop by if you're ever near this area. Looks like they serve coffee too so if you're looking for just coffee or affogatos as well, I highly recommend. There's plenty do street parking and to the looks of it, no one is actually checking the meters. This area seems to be developing a lot, but it's a true treat that this business is here to serve treats to those nearby. I'll definitely be back when I come back to Alabama! read more

This just opened in the Mercantile on Morris building downtown, and as you can tell from the picture I took, the gelato is so good that they are already selling out daily. I can personally verify that the salted caramel and cappucino flavors are wonderful but am sure the others are great as well. They have coffee & cappucinos etc. but I have not tried yet and will update review when I do. Check the website for hours as they are understandably variable, being a new business. They have indoors seating and the Mercantile building itself has outdoor seating. read more

Even if the economics of its ingredients demanded a premium surcharge, "Magic City" ought to be enshrined as an immovable staple on the menu. Instead, the menu is a restless, ever-shifting carousel. I concede that a relentless churn of novelty is a virtue to a certain type of customer, but the soul of a great neighborhood institution relies on the comforting reliability of a few anchor flavors. At Big Spoon, just as you develop an affection for a flavor, it vanishes into the ether. Then, we must examine the rewards program, an endeavor so poorly conceived it borders on the avant-garde. The mathematics are punishingly flat: one point per order, regardless of whether the patron spends a single dollar or one hundred. The rational response to such a broken incentive structure is, naturally, to weaponize the system. To extract any genuine value, the savvy customer is forced into a theatrical display of micro-transactions, paying for each scoop separately. It is a loophole that needlessly punishes the very staff who make the establishment shine, forcing them to run the register three or four times for a single family's dessert. Finally, there is the creamery's bizarre pricing taxonomy. A close study of the board reveals an accidental arbitrage opportunity: the customer is objectively better off purchasing two distinct pints of ice cream and two empty waffle cones to assemble on their own time, rather than engaging in the straightforward, intended transaction of ordering ice cream scooped directly into a cone. They had samples galore due to the grand opening and I got to try several of their yummy selections, including chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered pineapple, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered rice krispie treats, etc. While they will not have the same variety of samples on the future outside of the grand opening event, I was told that they will always have a plate of samples out close to the register! They have milk chocolate and dark chocolate for sure....and I am sure white chocolate but I didn't pay attention to that since I am not a white chocolate kind of gal. I can honestly say their milk chocolate is quality stuff. You can definitely tell the difference, no cheap imitation here! Also, they have gelato available in the store.....I want to say at least 10 flavors? I forgot to get an exact count, but they look delicious. Also, and this is a big one for me, they have chocolate caramel green apples. Yes, they do! So there is only one other store in Birmingham that I know of with chocolate caramel apples....but it's no good as the chocolate the other store uses is just not up to par and leaves a funny taste. I eat a lot of chocolate caramel apples and currently I mail-order them as I expect them to be of certain quality. However, I am really excited to try Peterbrooke's chocolate caramel apple next time I make my way there as I already know they have quality chocolate from the samples today! After searching through several Chocolatier's in the Birmingham area looking for family a gift card…read moreso they could have fun choosing their own chocolates, I decided to use Peterbrooke as they had an online e-Gift Card option, where the other shops did not offer this. I decided to call the local store to confirm they would accept the GC and the sweetest lady went above & beyond to help me place an order through the store's register. She sent me a screen shot for confirmation and mailed the GC that day, to family. They were so surprised & pleased! Apparently the online e-Gift Cards can only be used for ONLINE purchases. So keep that in mind.

Came back after our Yelp event because hubby wanted it again. Who was I to say no? Lol…read more I got a small grasshopper. So good. Mint, vanilla, and chocolate with cookie crumbles. So delicious. This will probably be my go to in the future. I'm excited for their holiday flavors to come out. Staff are very nice and check on you too make sure you are happy. We'll be back.

I really liked the vibe as I pulled up. The guy working was very friendly and highly recommended the brownie sundaes, which we gladly obliged and ordered. Even though he was the only person working, he worked fairly fast and no one seemed to be in a hurry which made things all the more better. Prices were reasonable and you get to pick your brownie and all the toppings for the sundae. Don't forget the cherries...they are in the fridge. My guy got the butter pecan ice cream on his sundae, while I opted for the cow tipping flavor. The inside is fun and colorful and I vibed with the music playing from the tv. The brownie was very moist without being diabetic coma sweet. I really enjoyed everything about our visit and I can't wait to go again!
