We went on a Tuesday evening and bottles of wine were $10 off. They also have trivia on Tuesdays!!! We ordered the brussels sprouts and meatballs to start, along with a delicious New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Shoutout to my kiwi cousins. The brussels sprouts had a distinct pickle flavor to them, and a deliciously spicy aioli situation on top. Great starters. The meatballs were simple, yet scrumptious. Ideally moist, good red sauce, great flavor. I am in no way Italian so my options on red sauce are moot. Seemed good to me, though. We ended off with the pepperoni pizza, which had the CUPPED ronis. If they're not cupping, I'm not calling. Great pizza, crust not too thin or thick, good flavor. Service is a bit slower on the patio than the rest of the restaurant, I'm guessing. I can't justify returning to Freddy's after three consistently bad experiences. The pricing is outrageous! A bottle of wine that costs around $19 at Target runs $60-70 here. Sure, some call it "the experience," but that falls flat when the service is completely lacking. One rainy night, my friends and I walked from farther away in pouring rain, shook off our coats and umbrellas outside, and stepped in dripping, only to be met with stares and zero help. We felt judged from the moment we entered. (WARNING: make sure you dress like you have money or whatever, not that we were in slacks or anything). The waiter that evening was also so snobby, inattentive, and provided terrible customer service. Ambiance is meh. So dark and crowded, no privacy. The food is equally disappointing: wildly overpriced with no real flavor balance. Dishes come out either bland and plain or excessively salty. Not once across three visits did anything impress me, and I've never left having enjoyed myself. So, I'm really not sure what the hype is about this place. Freddys was fun! A good atmosphere. We came to get drinks before our dinner. I got the lavender haze and it was very vodka forward. Not the best drink I've ever had. A friend got the espresso martini and sent it back. There was no kahlua, like the menu stated. Very disappointed in this. This was a Saturday night and they were out of a few drinks we requested. Came to Freddy's before our Bottega dinner reservation. Always a hard time to find a parking spots in this area so we did have to walk a few blocks. We sat ourselves outside per the sign and were quickly greeted by a waiter to get our drink orders. I ordered a Hugo Spritz off their cocktail list and my husband asked if he could order a Ranch Water (tequila, soda, lime) but the staff was told by the owner they could not make off menu drinks anymore. He ended up ordering a scotch neat from the menu. We enjoyed the patio and ambiance, but it got super windy and was about to rain so we snuck inside to finish our drinks. The vibe inside was just kinda of mediocre, the patio is definitely where you want to be! We did not get any food but we will definitely be back to try some soon. I'm not too sure how this place has such high reviews or maybe it was just a bad night for Freddy's but mostly everything I had was not good at all. Maybe I just chose the wrong items?? The one thing that was slightly good was their take on the Caesar salad (which comes with ice burg lettuce and pecans.) Not to insult the chef but I literally could have vomited from the texture and flavor of the meat balls which consisted of veal, pork, and beef. The Gnocchi "Mac and cheese" was strangely seasoned and the truffle roasted tators were not crispy at all and lacked flavor. My fiancé ordered the McRoy chicken sandwich and said it was okay but wasn't pleased. I'm giving three stars for the service, the atmosphere, and the drink "Gin and Berries." Our server could tell we didn't like our dishes and offered to take both the meatballs and the chicken sandwich off. My fiancé decided to then order a burger and once again he said it was pretty decent. I tasted a bit of the goat cheese burger and it was cooked nicely and seasoned fairly well. Freddy's is such a wonderful addition to the Highland Park area.... a bummer since I no longer live there! As others have said, parking can be hit or miss (especially depending on day/time), but when I've been (usually after work), I haven't found a problem finding parking. You would miss Freddy's if you didn't know what you were looking for! It's a great place with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, which is great depending on the weather. I've only had the charcuterie board, but both times it has been excellent and plenty of food to split between 2 people. They do have specials, but you may want to consider getting a carafe of wine - def. more bang for your buck (if that's your aim). I can't wait to bring my husband here one day. Several places have come and gone in this space across the street from Bottega, and one of the big issues has been parking...there is none. Looks like Freddy's may have solved that with having valet...yea!!!! Cool little bar feel when you come in with tables and chairs, high tops, a couch or two, and some good outdoor seating. They have many wines to pick from and some house made "cocktails", which are generally beers, wines, champagnes mixed with aperol or Campari and other aperitifs to create spritzers. I had the blood orange which was filled with ice and so refreshing for this time of year. Wife had the beer based negroni which even I liked and I am not a Campari lover. Freddy's has a small plate kind of menu. We had the dip of the day which was rodele and chorizo with fresh chips and warm little bread bites. Great little snack. We also had the crab cakes which honestly need some work. They were so greasy and bready it was just not worth it. I will say the crowd tended to a younger milleneal crowd, but that's never stopped us..Ha.. But this is a great little place to hang out, have a beer or wine cocktail, and pass the time with your significant other or some friends. And now with the parking issue solved, these place is definitely on our list of returns. read more

*Covid Review* Despite Google telling us that they were closed, as of October 24, they are open! The patio area has a great atmosphere, and tables are really comfortably spaced out. It's covered, so even on a drizzly night it's lovely. Paper menus are single-use, and wait staff was masked. It's definitely a slow-style of dining. No one is in a rush here. We kind of were, but I think this spot is best enjoyed leisurely. If you're not a big wine-lover, beware that the creative cocktails aren't mind-blowingly good. My husband loved his Manhattan, but my friend and I were just okay with ours (the seasonal apple one and the strawberry basil shrub). Loved the food, though! I tried the Caesar salad (loved the nuts on it), the patty melt (very good rye, and amazing mustard), the truffle fries (not my favorite, they're home fry style), and the gnocchi "mac n cheese" (very good, loved the broiled finish to get the cheese golden). I'm thrilled that Freddy's has reopened! There are very few places in Birmingham when you can have appetizers and wine, without feeling pressured to order a full meal or stay a while to have a full meal if you would like. First, their wine section is impressive. Each day of the week they feature a different Country for their happy hour special. I prefer to get the carafe of their house red, since I can be indecisive given their large selection. They also have a ton of awesome cocktails, including my favorite, the Aperol Spritz. I met some friends a few months ago and they had a limited menu, due to COVID. They have recently reopened and have a full menu with both indoor and outdoor seating. They will also seat up to 8 people at a table, if you have a larger party. My favorite menu item is by far the cheese board. It's hands down the best cheese board in Birmingham. There's three size options, so that's nice, depending on the size of your party. My friends and I always love ordering multiple items from their ever-changing menu and sharing them with everyone. A friend recommended we stop by on yesterday since we were in the mood for wine. I was immediately greeted upon walking in,and being that it was my first time the sweet hostess provided me with an overview of the ordering process. It is a bit unconventional than most places due to using a playing card (I was 3 of spades haha) and not providing your credit/debit card to keep track of your tab. I was in the mood for rosè so the bartender and hostess provided me with samples of their selection. I chose the sweeter rosè. After browsing the wine and food menu. Let me add that everything is reasonably priced!! I chose the small charcuterie board. It was pretty good ,but would have been better if it included two different types of cheese verses one type. This place has a lot of potential especially for the spring and summer seasons (they have a huge outdoor seating area) My only recommendation is that they either add an additional register or allow the servers to bring you your check in order to implement a faster way to close your tab. Cool new spot across the street from Bottega! Try them out NOW before they start getting completely slammed! First things first: you have to order everything at the counter throughout your visit, and there's only one register. I could see this being a logistical challenge on busy nights. Luckily, we went last night when there was a nice crowd but not too many people. When we walked in, we were confused because there was a bar with no chairs. And then we realized that was where you ordered everything (huge sign stating this was somehow not immediately obvious to us, lol). Anyway, someone came over to us and explained the ordering and seating process and we were good to go. Again not a huge crowd there last night, so plenty of open seating. The decor is beautiful. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. For water, you simply grab a complimentary liter and glasses for your table from the counter, all other beverages are ordered from the bar. The food is tapas style. We tried the peanut hummus served with sweet potato chips and crudité (yum); garlic shrimp (the actual name of the dish is much fancier, but yum); cremini mushrooms served in a cheese whip (this item is served cold, it was okay); and my friend had the gnocchi which she said was delicious. Although there isn't technically table service other than food drop-off, the staff was very attentive to check-in with us throughout our visit. Again, I'm interested to see how this would go on a busy night when the place is crowded, the tables are full and all of the comfortable spaciousness is filled with standing people...which would be a great problem for a new business to have. So I hope they are planning for it because this place is going to get very popular, very soon! I definitely recommend that you try this place out. I will be back! p.s. We were in the mood for wine and a charcuterie board and were super happy to see that they opened back up. We were greeted by a warm staff and seated. Our server Simone was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. We ordered a Rose tower with a standard charcuterie board. The charcuterie board had mustard, fennel salami, pickles, apricot jelly, honey, prosciutto, grapes, brie, (I forgot the second cheese ‍), bread and crackers. Our friend joined a little later so we grabbed some truffle fries (yummy). These are smothered in duck fat and had a delicious aioli. Closed the night off with a delicious old fashioned. I've been to Freddy's maybe three times. This most recent visit was during Bham Restaurant Week 2019! I mean, guess everyone wanted to take full advantage of the food and wine specials. I ordered the medium charcuterie board which came with 2 glasses of wine (house red , white or rosé). As we all know , house wines can be very unpredictable. The house red wine was satisfying to my palate as was the charcuterie board - $20 bucks! Definitely worth fighting the lively crowd present at the time of my Thursday night visit after work. I've read some complaints on the contents of the charcuterie board but I was pleased for the most part. Now, I will say that there was indeed something missing . Hmmm , maybe some type of candied nut or another sweet tasting option . Of course , all of these boards are unique depending on where you are. There were two different types of cheeses , two different meat selections, wafer looking crackers , bread , as well of nuts , pitted olives/ pickles. I really enjoyed the grainy mustard that accompanied the board. I would certainly order this again- I really liked the presentation as well. There was one drawback with this visit. I was overcharged! Like , overcharged by $8 . I quickly realized the bill of $33 didn't make sense for what I ordered - my bill should have been $20 plus applicable taxes. After mentioning this error with my bill, the staff very willingly got my bill corrected. However, I am very curious of just how many other people were overcharged??????
