Pesto
Ranita S.

Pricey but so is everything else these days. Appetizers were great. I was excited about the French onion soup but the bread got too mushy while waiting for it to cool down. Maybe serve the bread on the side or cut it up smaller and toast until crouton consistency It arrived at the end of my meal not sure why. I wasn't told why either Chicken in Alfredo isn't freshly grilled Tasted like older unseasoned bits (they should improve this) especially if they're charging over $20 a dish Alfredo sauce was perfect. Pesto can get bitter if you don't use fresh basil or if you heat it. Adorable restaurant has potential either they should up the quality of meat or come down on the prices Our waitress was sweet and wasn't overwhelmed despite clearly being the only one there. Will try the pizza one day. We probably should have all ordered that. Didn't appreciate being seated so closely to other diners. My friends and I had lots of personal matters to discuss and our conversation got heated It was awkward being an elbow length apart from the only 2 parties there. Remove two tables and space the rest out for a more comfortable experience

Buffalo Chicken Stromboli

My husband and I came here during lunch on a weekday. There was maybe 1 or 2 other tables of customers, so we didn't have to wait to be seated. We chose to sit outside because it was a beautiful day! Our waitress took our drink and food order and we only saw her during our meal when she brought our food out. When we were finished, we had to go in and ask for a check. Now, usually I'd be more lenient here on the criticism if it had been more crowded, but we were one of only two total tables for our waitress. We ordered garlic knots for our appetizer which were great! It took about 30 minutes to get them though. For our entree, my husband ordered the Hawaiian pizza and I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Stromboli. My husband enjoyed his pizza well enough, but I had several issues with my Stromboli. 1st, there was VERY little chicken in it. I had to dig for it. 2nd, as shown in the pic, the cheese inside wasn't even melted. How can you burn the outside and not even melt the cheese inside? This tells me that either the cheese wasn't freshly grated OR that the oven temp is too high (or both). I was pretty disappointed. Not sure that I'll spend my money here again.

Update! In restaurant review! We showed up around 11:30am New Years Eve. They had the doors open on the 64 degree day right in front of the huge fountain with the smell of Italian suco cooking and spices wafting in the air. The music was absolutely perfect. The decor was that of a old time established place done gradually by the diy owner and had some character. It also had the feel of a walk in NYC Italian deli to the right with the gingham red table cloths. We were the only ones there the entire time, which is just wrong because the food was high quality! We ordered the meatballs as appetizer. They were minced and soft but firm also. Flavor was good and had breadcrumbs used in them as well. Overall they were very good. However, the sauce it came with reminded me if our family's homemade suco. So it felt so right. Not sweet and not bitter with not everything cooked down so it had some small chunks of tomato and onion remaining. Well spiced perfectly. Real homemade suco and you can tell! She had the chicken piccata which was spot on. However the meat was not pounded thin and although it was two thicker larger breast, the flavor penetrated well through which was shocking for how thick they were. Very tender and well seasoned. I had the lasagna, as a true staple test of a review. The cheese they use I love but is more on the greasy side. But the flavor and firmness was spot on. The meat was a little over seasoned with oregano but does not bother me. Others may find it too strong. I don't remember seeing or tasting any ricotta cheese as stated on the menu and that was disappointing because I love it in lasagna. It was very different than the lasagna upon my door dash order when I first reviewed it. We had to ask for bread after the meal came as I felt the suco would go to waste from the meatballs and my lasagna which is an Italian mortal sin. I made small suco sandwhichs with the rolls. Spot on! They over cooked the roles but they did not taste burned oddly. Had they been cooked less they would be 5 star with the the olive oil butter and garlic. I would suggest adding salt to them on top. Once settled in, the decor, the music, ah man the music was spot on! The sound of the water fountain with open doors really pulled the ambiance all together. Being the only two there was nice but it would also be different experience had it been more crowded. This place should be very busy based on the homemade food, quality ingredients and tastes of authentic Italian which is hard to find locally. It felt like the food was too good to not be much more crowded. The owner was there and very nice, as was the staff. They make their own bread and suco for sure. Overall, I cannot rate a 5 as I would need to try more menu items. Based on others reviews and our own experience it seems there may be consistency problems which is a telltale sign that much of it is homemade. (Thats a good sign.) But expect hit and miss when most of the items are home made and not premade. Overall this is an easy 4 star + but not a 5 star (yet.) I think if they get and stay busier it would force more consistency and improvement and they could easily become a long term staple in the area being highly sought after and successful. Well worth going if you want to try a new place. I was a little shocked at the $18 Stromboli and other costs on the menu but again, this is authentic homemade food and you can tell. It literally reminds me of my Nonna's as she was just as inconsistent due to item availability or just energy levels. I would assume even on a bad day the food would still be good. Absolutely will be one of my go to Italian places when in the area. Try it and experience a taste of real Italy.

Hubby and I dined here late on a Saturday evening. Served by the owner himself! A delicious appetizer of meatballs in marinara and bread. Then we split the Napoli salad and chicken parmigiana. Salad was a wonderful combination of tastes. Dressing great too. The chicken parm was fabulous....tender, juicy and just enough crispness. You could taste the sauce was homemade. Excellent Italian food and atmosphere. Will return on our next trip to Birmingham. If you live nearby, definitely check them out!!

Bruschetta

Still getting the restaurant up and fully running, but the inside is quaint. Service was a little slow as I believe the owner was doing multiple duties, host, server, busboy. He's really friendly. Food was really good. It's been a while since I've had good Bruschetta and the Shrimp Scampi was amazing. Will definitely be back to try a different dish.

Eggplant Parmigiana is sooo good! Please visit this place because it's amazing! Everything is homemade!!!!!

Capella Pizzeria definitely deserves their high ratings…read more I came here with some others to pick up some pizzas for a family gathering. I was pleased that the had a large variety of options but even had gelato and desserts as well. Large pizzas run $21-$27 are thin crust. For pizzas, we got two of their Margheritas, Meat Buster and Palermo. They were all good and a hit at the family party. The meat Buster and Palermo had meat but honestly not a whole lot. They were good though. All the pizzas were lots of flavor and the sauce to cheese ratio was perfect. I loved that they had chili oil, extra dipping sauce, cheese, and peppers on the side for you to grab. While our time there we even had some gelato which was good and got some cheese cake to go. Our pizzas came out quick. The shop is very large with plenty of places to sit, even good for a large party. I loved that they even had plates on the table ready to go. This was a solid pizza spot and worth checking out if you prefer thinner crust.

The restaurant is spacious and clean. The vibes are upscale costco/sams. All the ingredients are fresh from Italy and the Italian wood fire oven cooks them perfectly. The wait is never long and the portion sizes are my favorite. Even after eating their pizza, I have never felt bloated or "bad" afterwards like some of my other experiences with pizza, which has strayed me away from pizza all together. I always get the Palermo and have never strayed. I want to try something new but just can't! Their hot chili oil is chef's kiss on the pizza!

I thought this was a really neat way to celebrate the city's history and highlight local cuisine. I decided to visit this restaurant because what is better than pizza? Something that can be saved and eaten for days. This restaurant definitely delivered wonderful food! I had the Margherita pizza, the appetizer meatball, and the beignets. The restaurant is located in a little shopping center in the heart of Cahaba Heights. It is a cozy bistro-style place. As usual, I got the food to go due to work. Unfortunately, I rarely get a chance to dine in and enjoy food at the establishment. So, I am very picky about to-go quality, and Troup's delivered. I had the margherita pizza, small 12-inch. It was still warm by the time I made it home. The mozzarella was fresh, and the perfect circle was cut and spread over each piece. The sauce was delicate and flavorful, tasting light and homemade as it should. I like a good amount of sauce, and it was very saucy. It was not overcooked in the slightest, with the cheese and basil still fresh and not burnt. The crust was more Neapolitan-style, softer toward the middle (it wasn't a true Neapolitan, though), but I like various styles of pizza, even hybrids, so I was happy. The spices used gave it great flavor. For a margherita pizza, it's definitely a thumbs up, and I would try it again. I also had their appetizer meatball, which was smothered in the same pizza sauce and fresh basil, and it was quite enjoyable. I am actually not a fan of meatballs unless they are cooked a certain way, usually a mix of meats and tender-ish, but I needed protein that day. Their meatball, I would say, qualifies as one I would eat again. It is a mix of ground pork, beef, and lamb. I am not a pork fan, but I could not taste much pork in this. I liked the beef and lamb, which gave it flavor, and it was cooked so that it was tender. Lastly, the meatball was huge in my opinion. I ate off of it for a few days (but probably most would finish it in 2 servings). Finally, I had their beignets. I tried one fresh before getting home, and it was delish! I honestly did not think they would hold well at home, and after I ate. I was pleasantly surprised. They were amazing, slightly warmed back up. Also, there were so many that I shared them with friends, who also very much enjoyed them. All in all, I would eat there again, even though it may be a bit pricey.

We got the regular size and still had leftovers. We did a half order of the Zia fries, which were more than enough for two. The Caesar salad was good, just a little heavy on the dressing. As for service, our server Drummond was nice and took good care of us. However, the hostess tried to seat us right next to a large group, like arm's length close. I asked for a booth and was told no because it was "busy," even though there was no wait. We ended up sitting at the empty bar, and the booth stayed empty the entire time. The staff is always friendly, and the pizzas are made to order in a wood-fired brick oven. They offer amazing salads, pastas, and just about every type of pizza you can imagine. What keeps my brother coming back, though, is the crust. It's not thin and overly crispy like chain spots such as Domino's Pizza or Pizza Hut. Instead, it strikes the perfect balance between soft and firm. The center is tender, while the outer crust has structure without being too crunchy. At one point I'm pretty sure he thought the night was going somewhere... and I had to subtly remind him this was a friendship risotto, not a romance risotto. Aaaaaanyway... the restaurant itself is excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive the whole night. I ordered an old fashioned that came with the proper large scube... always a sign the bar knows what it's doing. For dinner I had the braised short rib risotto and it was a knockout. The short rib was so tender it basically collapsed if you looked at it too hard, and the risotto was creamy and full of flavor. All jokes aside, it's a really solid spot and perfect for a date... or apparently a very emotionally confusing dinner with a friend. That said, pricing has always been outrageous, and it's becoming harder to overlook. For example our most recent trip, we had two mains, and an appetizer, and the bill was $90. Had we gotten drinks, desserts, or any extras, we'd be looking at $150+. I asked for extra tomato sauce to go, and I was given what was literally two tablespoons of sauce, charged at an outrageous $3.50. I get that things are pricier now, but tomato sauce is one of the cheapest ingredients, organic or not and as a chain, I can guarantee you this isn't small batch, nor locally made. The markup here was just shocking. I know things cost more these days, but the price does not match the value. For this price point, you would expect much higher quality dining and you can get that easily in Birmingham. It's still a great dining experience, but we're increasingly cautious because the pricing has been a concern for years. Just something to keep in mind if, like many of us, you're cautious about budget.

It was like when Little Ceasars use to be bad because we all know they have gotten a lot better over the years. The pizza was really doughy. Like right on the verge of being raw dough. They put the toppings under the cheese so it was like I only had cheese pizza on one of them. It was a floppy mess and the sauce overpowered everything. Couldn't taste the Pepperoni or bacon and the cheese was a bit bland. 6/10 The wings were pretty good even though they ignored how I wanted them cooked.
