Albondigas
Jorge F.

Stop what you're doing and get into this downtown staples! I have drove past this place way to many times just thinking it was a quick stop Mexican restaurant, well i couldn't have been more off never judge a book by the cover! Step into a super clean and sophisticated dinning experience. The decor in here is beautiful and you can tell the employees love what they do! I can honestly say i don't know when I'll go visit my mom next because the albondigas here match her flavor and style (i have to say match if she ever reads this she will lose it.) the salsa has the right amount of bite to keep you wanting another bite and the spicey marg... insane! Come visit Maggie at the bar and have some fun!

I was in the mood for enchiladas and search online, decided on, La Pinata. I ordered their spinach enchiladas, I must say I was surprised with the large portions they serve, love that almost every part of the plate was covered in melted cheese. They do give complementary chips and salsa. We sat inside, however they do have outside seating. Our table waitress was fast and checked on us regularly.

Another five star review for La Pinata. We walked in at 8:55 not knowing the kitchen closes at 9. They sat us and happily and efficiently served us! This is the kind of restaurant that takes care of its customers!

Chips & salsa (regular chunky & hot salsa)

Came here for lunch after shopping in the area. Since it was just opening, I was immediately sat and greeted by a gentleman providing chips and salsa. I immediately requested their spicier salsa, which has a nice elevated heat level. My waitress (Marisela) then followed up asking if I wanted anything to drink. I requested iced tea, after she delivered the drink, she was ready to take my lunch order (Taco Salad w/Machaca beef). It was prepared and delivered very quickly. The machaca beef was seasoned well and there was plenty for leftovers to take home for my dinner tonight. This place has been here for years and it appears they have established a steady clientele. The service was really good. The place is a medium to large space with ample seating and offers patio seating.

I think the food is better if you dine in. The chicken stack wasn't as good in the to go container with all the flavors and sauces pushed together. Also way too many beans in this order.

I got food for pick up and I didn't even bring my phone with me! There are so many things that you can take pictures of, like donkey pinatas. This place has been around for a long time, according to my friend that recommended we get our lunch there. The place has got a great vibe to it! The food was delicious and filling. My friend that recommended the place is vegetarian, so they clearly have that option covered. I was not sure what I wanted, first times at places I tend to get something safe. I didn't see anything that was much safer than mini chimichangas with some jalapeno cream cheese and salsa.

Friends, Stopped into La Piñata for a quick lunch!!! I had the taco and enchilada combination. The food was piping hot, and delicious. Super fast service. My server Maggie was amazing, very attentive and provided great food recommendation. The enchilada sauce is like homemade, just perfect. The chips come out hot, with 2 large sides of salsa. Grade: A+

Drinks and service were excellent. The pricing and hooch selection at the bar provided some good value. The bartender was quick and friendly. The food missed no matter what we ordered. The green chile beef tasted good, but the meat in it was overcooked and a bit dry. My wife got a chicken salad because it came with a jalapeño ranch. After it came, they told us they were out of all ranch dressing. Is it not made in-house? Anyway, the chicken was overcooked and dry. She disliked the salad. I ordered steak fajitas, and they came coated in some sort of sweet brown sauce. The meat was overcooked and dry on these, too. The barkeep comped the chicken, but it is unlikely that we will return.

I am hesitant about writing this review as this is an amazing gem I'd like to keep to myself. I was in the area while visiting my son and he suggested this place for lunch. I was hesitant when we arrived as I'm very picky. However, as soon as we walked in I was excited to try the food as the ambiance is amazing and the food looked and smelled equally amazing! We were promptly seated and were provided chips and salsa. This salsa was not like any other I had before but full of flavor. I ordered the Tia Carlotta as our server said it was her favorite when I asked about it. Be warned this plate is huge! The flavor of the tamale with the chicken and cheeses on top were to die for! I'm already looking forward to our next time in the area so I can have this again!

Friendly service. Clean place. I got the beef chimi lunch special and it was a huge plate! They provide you with chips and salsa. I asked for the spicy salsa, which I mixed with the regular salsa and it was delicious. My friend got the salad carbon (lots of steak) and it was huge as well! The steak was perfectly cooked, it melted in your mouth. Definitely a nice place to have lunch.

If you need ambiance. If you need an upscale chef. If you need a phony server. It's not here... What you will get is a very charming smile and a genuine greeting from this wonderful elder woman. 55 years in the business and it shows why. It's 1:30 on a weekday steady flow of all walks of life simply enjoying the simple pleasures. I live in Orlando, Fl. grew up in So Cal. traveled extensively. I know Mexican food, it's my favorite! For Tex Mex this was everything one can dream of and leave this place wowed. Again nothing fancy, just simple old school culinary execution from family tradition and it shows. I believe this is why the locals gather. Great portions and on point in itself. Just go and try simple as that.

Lylo Swim Club was always top of mind but I still searched to see if there was an option closer to where I live in North East Phoenix. Ultimately Lylo Swim Club was what I chose and I am very glad that I did. The fan mister gave us great comfort and the pool was the perfect temperature for us all. The popular Dole Whip drink did not disappoint we all three ordered one. Also the food was delicious and our server Miguel provided us with stellar service! I highly recommend that you book a pool side lounge or daybed for your next gathering.

There's a lot of spots for improvement here, but I'd also say that Lylo is one of the few businesses I've ever seen do such a visually-great escape out from their pool area. If you're here for the escape and temper your expectations for food or drink, I think you'd have a good time. There are a TON of mosquitos here, so prepare accordingly. The bar and hotel lobby didn't have bug spray nor any for sale. The nearby liquor store does have some for sale at less than a block's walk. (The pool is hot mid Phoenix summer. The pool itself felt closer to a hot tub than a refreshingly cold pool. I'm told this is normal for pools in Arizona in the summer.) PROS: -All of the drinks are really pretty, visually, and with the pool, you have a great mecca for social media photos. -Despite the ridiculous 110+ Phoenix heat, we were relatively comfortable in the shaded restaurant area with the misters. We could still see the pool, but we weren't baking alive. -Pool bathrooms were clean enough. There were lots of puddles and toilet paper on the ground, but nothing was horrific or moldy like some pool bathrooms can be. Spacious stalls for changing too - though I didn't see any shower or changing areas. -The pool area itself is pretty! It makes for gorgeous Instagram photos, and Lylo knows that. There are lots of little spots (a camp sign, a chair off on its own, all the loungers, etc.) that make cute photo backdrops in addition to the pool itself. -There is a collection of inflatable pool toys in the corner that seem to be open for guest use. CONS: -Water bottles are not allowed at all - not even sealed disposable plastic ones from the grocery store. They'll store them for you, and you can fetch your own water with disposable plastic cups while you're here. -The misters in the pool area were broken. With the heat, we chose not to actually use the pool, and instead stayed in the restaurant, shaded area with misters. -All of the on-menu drinks are pretty sweet and not super boozy (at their price points). It's easy to go through quite a few at their higher price. Make sure that you're spending intentionally. -We weren't in love with the food we ordered. It felt like frozen food reheated and served to us. To be fair, that's about to be expected from a pool bar, but it was still something to note at the prices and with nearby restaurants walkable. -Service is there. I wouldn't say it was friendly or welcoming, but the servers checked in often in-between talking to people in swimsuits or joking with friends. I rarely waited for anything, but I didn't feel like a valued guest. -The fabric of the chaise loungers and lounge beds are stained. I saw some employees hauling off some of them and shoving them into the back of a fabric cleaning van, so I'd assume they rotate in and out and have to deal with a ton of spilled drinks.

We ordered the harissa shrimp and charred cabbage, which were both flavorful and unique. I love ordering things that I wouldn't normally make at home when dining out and both dishes were just that. I arrived a bit before 6 to find it closed, no sign on the door and nothing online stating it had closed. So we headed downtown to the second location. I arrived about 6:10 pm and was asked if I had a reservation. I explained that we went to the other location only to find it closed and when we called the only number on the website to make a reservation (earlier in the day), no one answered the phone. We called multiple times. The guy at the door informed us the other location had closed and he couldn't seat us until 8 pm unless we wanted to sit at the bar. I asked to speak with a manager and was told there was no manager there. A restaurant should always have a manager or someone on site empowered to address customer concerns. We agreed to sit at the bar. First we ordered cocktails for $17 each. While they were tasty and refreshing, they had virtually no alcohol. I ordered the Kra Pow and, on the server's recommendation, chose the pork belly. My friend ordered the Pad Ki-Mao with pork belly. After waiting 30-45 minutes for the food, it finally arrived. Mine was dry pieces of pork belly, dry rice, an egg and three cucumber slices, no sauce whatsoever. When I asked for sauce, I was offered soy sauce and hot chili. My friend's noodles were tasty, but she also thought her pork belly was dry. The server, who was also the host and bartender didn't check in on us a single time during our meal. Between the outdated website, unanswered phone, lack of management and service, long wait and underwhelming food and drinks, the entire experience was extremely disappointing. Located in the Melrose part…read moreof Phoenix, I checked out Bar 1912 after having dinner at Valentine (hint, hint: the speakeasy is located inside the restaurant). They have a small parking lot, but it's free and I was able to find a spot on a Friday evening. Ambiance (2.5/5): Speakeasies are known for their sophistication and for their hidden entry. Bar 1912 isn't much of a mystery. There are two entry points. Either a door in the back of the restaurant or a hallway inside the restaurant that's relatively easy to find as there isn't a door or anything in between the restaurant and the speakeasy. Our waiter took us there after our meal. Bar 1912 is nice, but just about average in terms of ambiance compared to other speakeasies. Part of the reason is that it's very loud (seats 30 people or so) and all of the seating at the bar are back-less bar stools (which I personally hate due to my back). I would have preferred to sit on the various couches/sofas next to the bar. Service (4.5/5): Friendly, attentive service. Exactly what you hope for when you're grabbing a drink (especially when they take a little longer to make due to their sophistication). You're provided with water without asking which is always a nice touch. I had to grab the bartender's attention once or twice, but outside of that, a job well done. Food (N/A); Since I had dinner at Valentine prior, I skipped food here. They have a small menu consisting mostly of appetizers (many, but not all, which are offered at Valentine). One option which isn't at Valentine, but which piqued my interest is the Sonoran hot dog. Had I been hungry, it would've been a no brainer. They have four or so desserts on the menu, and I had room for dessert, but none of them seemed appetizing. Drinks (4/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for creativity and an interesting blend of ingredients. You certainly have that here. There's a focus on Native American and Hispanic influences here, which is pretty cool, and fitting since we're in Phoenix and everything. I tried two cocktails, one was a hit and one was a miss. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to cocktails, and I know what I like, so I rarely miss. Unfortunately, it happened here. With that being said, I tried some liqueurs I had never had before which is awesome. And I enjoyed the cocktail menu. This isn't the type of spot you'll find an Espresso Martini...thankfully. With a couple of tweaks, Bar 1912 could be in line with some of my favorite speakeasies in town.

Located on the roof (of course) of a boutique hotel, I find free parking in the hotel's parking lot. While it was a busy parking lot, I was able to find a spot. Unfortunately, my night consisted of a comedy of errors. Ambiance (3/5): When you think best rooftop in the state, you're thinking scenic and peaceful views. Don Woods' certainly has that, though I've seen better in Phoenix. You can see the mountains in the background, but that's about it. The hotel is located on a busy street, where you'll often hear the noise of cars buzzing by or the train choo-chooing. Did I just make up a word?! I imagine the best time to stop by is during sunset. The outdoor area is relatively narrow with seating for about 20-30 people. It's a mix of comfortable seats and tables/chairs. There's also a charming indoor area, where the bar is located, but I felt like I had to sit outside. The weather was perfect, too. Service (2.5/5): This is where the comedy of errors began. I was given a menu and some water and was left to peruse the menu. Before the waitress had returned, I had picked out an appetizer and a cocktail. I then discovered that their cook had quit the other week and as a result, no food was available. That's fine and all, but you've gotta give me a heads-up when giving me the menu. That way, I wouldn't have spent the time to look over the food menu and get my heart set on a particular dish. On a better note, they have free WiFi. And service was overall friendly and pretty efficient. Food (N/A): While I was unable to order some food, on most nights, they have a small menu of small plates. More of a snack type of spot then a full meal type of establishment. Drinks (3/5): Don Woods is know for its cocktails and they have a list of 10 or so craft cocktails. Plus, beer, wine, and the typical options that you would find when there's a full bar. I feel like the bartender messed up the proportions on my cocktail as it was a bit rough. One drink and I was out. It seems like Don Woods' is experiencing some turnover which is leading to some mishaps. Combine that with some high expectations given the accolades they won, and it was the recipe for a disaster. I love a good rooftop bar, so I was hoping for more at Don Woods' Say When. Even the lobby of the hotel was experiencing issues. They sell popsicles in the lobby but the guy temporarily manning the front desk didn't know how to get their Square device working. Which ended up meaning no appetizers for me at Don Woods and no popsicles from the lobby. Two strikes. We live to fight another day.
