I had heard stories of the neverending lines for Kyo Matcha, and hoped that the hype had died down by this weekend. We arrived around 3pm on a Sunday and the line was around 25 people long. We ended up spending around 40 minutes in line, and passed the time by visiting other neighboring businesses (Japonaise and H Mart) and debating on what to order. Ordering is done through a single kiosk, or with an employee (when they're not busy with all the orders!). I originally really wanted to try a milk cap cake, but my stomach just wasn't in the mood for it, so we decided to go for two drinks. We got the matcha latte float with matcha and milk swirl ice cream. I was pretty disappointed by the amount of ice cream in the float -- it was quite a sad, small swirl. Also, as others have pointed out, the drink is at least half ice -- we ended up trying to salvage the drink/ice cream that was stuck on the ice cubes, then collecting the ice on the side so we could actually drink the drink. The ice cream ends up becoming quite icy due to the ice, but from what I've tried, the ice cream was pretty tasty. The matcha latte doesn't seem to be sweetened at all, which I wasn't expecting, so you have to eat the ice cream in order to balance it out. Overall I would much prefer to get this item from Matcha Cafe Maiko -- much more ice cream, tastier/less grainy matcha latte. We also got the grapefruit guava green tea, mostly because I was wary of getting overwhelmed by creamy items. I thought this was quite a nice drink -- refreshing and good flavor. Nothing to complain about here, though I would like to pair it with some lychee jelly. I realized while I was eating that I've actually been to a Kyo Matcha location before -- Kyoto Matcha in Ellicott City, Maryland. I really enjoyed my experiences there -- the matcha crepe cake was excellent, and I enjoyed the ice cream and drinks as well. Based on those experiences, I'm assuming that where Kyo Matcha really shines is in the cake department. I didn't get to sample that this time, but I definitely will next time! Overall, if you're looking for matcha ice cream/drinks, Matcha Cafe Maiko will definitely fit the bill -- you can skip the wait and get a much better matcha latte float. It is a nice matcha soft serve place. It is located in brookline and there is little real estate for seating. Most of the time I go, it is packed with people. There are some bench seating, one small table, and one huge table in the middle for big groups or if you need a place to do work at on your laptop. The matcha soft serve is light, not overly sweet and the right consistency. Only complaint here is that there isnt much of a matcha flavor which is what I look for at an establishment with matcha specialties. However, it is not the worst. I would say it is a little out of the way since parking is not easy during dinner time despite abundant parking spaces on the street and usually when I drive by, there is a line out the door. Despite this everything tasted great! Matcha and hojicha flavors were good in both the lattes and ice cream, I preferred the hojicha over the matcha but couldn't go wrong either way. I went here for the grand opening and the line was insane. The items themselves were great though and the interior was adorable. Newest matcha soft serve and treats is here! I came here twice so far in two different days. Soft serve flavors are sweet but not too sweet, and nice distinct and also balanced flavor. Cakes and other sweets can sell out depending the time and demand. Especially, for the moment while the hype is up for this. Weekday line is obviously shorter but still can be about 20-30 min wait. Weekend line is probably an hour wait or so before you can order. It's about 10-12 min after you order to get your items. Overall, excellent addition to the area and it'll probably be poppin' in this area in the summer as well. PS Anything really isn't worth waiting longer than you're willing to spend in line. My general rule is 30 min. Anything beyond that time, you either cut it short or make the best of it. With that said, if you're not into lines then don't go here any time soon. Since its opening, Kyo Matcha has had lines spanning down the entire block so I was reluctant to visit so soon, but I had dinner plans closeby and coming here after was pretty much inevitable. We got in line around 6:45pm on a Friday night (a week after opening) and finally got our cake around 7:35pm. Unfortunately, what they don't tell you until you get to the ordering kiosk is which items are sold out (almost all of the cakes in our instance), so we ended up with the matcha cheese cake. I don't like cheese, but the matcha flavor, plus chocolate cake bottom layer offset any hint of cheese flavor. I enjoyed the cake overall, but would've preferred their other cake options. The space is tiny and not built for crowds. There's no easy way to maneuver around without asking someone to move out of your way, so forget coming here anytime soon if you have a wheelchair or stroller. We sat at the tables in the middle of the space, but my friend constantly had the people in line hovering over her. Kyo Matcha has potential, but I wouldn't recommend coming here within the next month or so unless you don't mind waiting in a huge line and having people breathe down your neck the whole time. They did so much of an influencer marketing push prior to opening that I'm surprised they don't use their social media savvy to update sold-out items on their Instagram Story or something. My friends and I went Saturday for their grand opening which resulted in a 2.5 hour wait in line. Would maybe recommend a limit per customer on the amount of order to help shorten the wait during grand opening? As for the ice cream and lattes, I would rate them 3/5! The hojicha and matcha was very sweet which slightly overpowers their respective tea flavors. Growing up in the Philippines, I also could tell the ube didn't taste like ube but more like sweet potato, so I don't recommend this flavor if you're looking for ube flavor!
