I don't know where, but at some point someone told me When Pigs Fly is the best bread bakery in town. They have several locations, so when I happened to walk past their flagship store in JP I decided to stop in and see what all the buzz was about. The store itself is quite small but when you first walk in they have a large selection of jelly and jams and olive oils for bread dipping. Then comes the bread - oh so many different flavors! I decided to get a fall-themed loaf and asked the staff member which he preferred. Ended up getting an apple cinnamon loaf based on his recommendation. They slice the loaf into snackable slices for you, which I appreciate. I thought I'd have one slice while walking home but ended up eating 30% of the loaf (oops!), it was just that good! read more

I finally got the chance to try their Saturday donuts! I first tried coming here on a Saturday around 4pm, but by then they were completely sold out. The following week I made sure to get here early at 10am. The donuts are as the other reviewers say: they're huge! They had 12 different flavors when I visited. I ended up getting the cider, pecan french toast, and lemon ricotta cheesecake with blueberry glaze. The total came to $11 for all 3, which is comparable to Union Square Donuts prices but the donuts here are much bigger. The cider donut was probably my least favorite, mainly because it was the most plain. It basically tasted like a plain donut rolled in cinnamon sugar. However, the dough base was incredible! Super fluffy and soft. The pecan french toast was like a maple glazed donut but with pecans on top (it's funny because they also have a maple glazed donut as one of the options). The pecans helped balance out the extreme sweetness of the maple glaze. The lemon ricotta cheesecake with blueberry glaze was incredible! It had the same awesome dough base as the other donuts, but it was also stuffed with a delicious ricotta filling. The texture of the filling reminded me of the traditional ricotta filling in cannolis. The filling was sweet, but also had a strong lemon flavor. The blueberry glaze complemented the lemon filling very well. Kind of messy to eat! read more

When Pigs Fly is my favorite bread bakery in Boston, possibly my favorite of all time! Every time I come to visit I grab several loaves - the bags are even freezer friendly (if you can resist eating them fresh!) and I love how the bakery can also slice the bread for you, which comes out a much better and uniform job than I can do myself. Perfect for sandwiches, paninis, or simply just eating on their own. Recent favorites have been their orange/walnut/cranberry, seasonal pumpkin, and sun dried tomato basil. However, all the breads I've tried here have been very good. You can also ask for small samples if you're unsure before purchasing. Breads are slightly pricey at around $6+, but well worth it for the quality. I'll definitely be back and might even consider their shipping options if I'm really craving! read more

When I tell you that these donuts made me want to cry I ain't lying! The lemon ricotta chesscake donut was worth every penny. These donuts are huge so you could literally split it with someone or eat half and save the rest for later. Can't remember the last time I had a donut so good. Hope you enjoy if you decide to go. Im told they run out sometimes so I'd recommend calling ahead just to see what they have left. I went on a Saturday afternoon and I think they were only out of one kind of donut. One important tip: ORDER THE BREAD! You can purchase an entire loaf. Don't remember the exact name of the bread I ordered but I know that it has apricot in it. I don't have much to add about the breads here that other reviews haven't covered. They're very good and flavorful and if you're looking for an interesting loaf for an occasion, they're all very good. I stopped by this past weekend and got four cookies: salted caramel, campfire, blueberry lemon, and chocolate heath bar. Frankly, all four were dreadful. They were pretty stale, dry, and crumbly, but on top of that you could tell they were never good, even before they had aged. They were too sweet, lacked salt, and seriously lacked flavor! I coudnt taste any caramel at all in the salted caramel cookie. The campfire tasted of neither graham nor marshmallow. The heath bar was the best but once you got past the candy topping it wasn't worth eating either. I was incredibly disappointed. Avoid the cookies! read more

I liked this little Brookline bakery. Stopped by on a Saturday morning for a sourdough boule and a donut. The sourdough was reasonably priced but I prefer a tangier flavor. I also didn't like how many large air bubbles were in the boule- it made for some interesting grilled cheese configurations. Overall it was a decent boule but not sure I'd get again. The donut was comically large- definitely enough for 2 or even 3 people to share. I tried the lemon ricotta blueberry which is a blueberry yeasted donut with a generous amount of lemon ricotta filling. Definitely need to eat this fresh. The flavors were spot on but I thought the yeasted bread was a bit dry. Thankfully there was plenty of filling to make up for this. Prices quite reasonable and fast service. This is our go-to place for bread! So many choices and very reasonably priced ($5-$7) for the flavors they offer. If you like plain bread, they have German sourdough, ciabatta, etc. If you want to be somewhat adventurous, try the others such as: 1. The hummus bread 2. Mango-pineapple-ginger 3. Spinach-onion-garlic They also have plenty of sweet breads - chocolate, Maple, etc. and fresh Bavarian pretzels. When you do purchase the bread, you have to buy the whole loaf. I wish you could purchase half or quarter, at least, for the sweet breads. But I've been told by the staff that the breads freeze well (haven't tried it myself). I have easily stored the bread in the refrigerator for a week or more and they've stayed fresh. Once you select your bread, they can slice it for you if needed. I usually get my own bread bag and let the staff know so they place the sliced loaf directly in there. The bakery also has samples of bread and spreads so you can try some before buying. The staff is friendly and nice! Also, they have specials on certain breads one hour before they close, offers vary by day. P.S: Look at the glass case on the side - you'll see the most beautiful (and gigantic) cookies. The Heath chocolate cookie was delicious! Moist yet crumbly, sweet but not too sweet. The donuts are the biggest I have ever seen and seem almost more like cake. They also have a variety of speciality and standard breads. I have tried their red pepper and hummus bread and then also their sour dough. Both really good! They also have a number of pantry items in their store as well as pizza dough and cheeses. They have been doing a great job to limit the number of customers in their store amid the coronavirus pandemic. They are a small shop, and they are letting 3 people in at a time. However, this was the first time I walked by on a SATURDAY. Saturday is the only day they do donuts! We saw the sign outside for donuts. I kind of shrugged it off, but my sister (who is also an equally, if not, bigger donut fan HAHA, runs in the family I guess) looked into the window, and all she said was, "omg. we're going in." So we went in. The first thing we see is the beautiful case of their donuts for the day. They had classic flavors like honey-glazed and chocolate frosted, but they also had unique ones like raspberry hazelnut, pecan french toast, and pumpkin glazed graham cracker (which is the one I got). My sister got the strawberry frosted. BEST.DONUTS.EVER. If you've ever had PVDonuts, I'd say that their dough and size are most like theirs: brioche-y and huge! I don't really think you can go wrong with any breads here and to make your life even harder and your tummies even heavier - there are also 3 different and delicious bread samples to make you even more torn! Been here a handful of times. Seems pretty hit or miss, maybe you need to really know what's good--or maybe it's just not for us. Cookies have been somewhat dry and not too flavorful. I got the chocolate heath today at 2 PM, which I can't imagine is so late that a cookie would dry out. But it was dry/crumbly, and the chocolate flavor seemed very basic. I've had two other similarly disappointing experiences with the cookies here within the past year, and one very good experience more than a year ago (s'mores--maybe because the marshmallow helps it retain moistness). I much much prefer the chocolate cookie nearby at Allium, or my favorite at Marjolaine. Breads are interesting. I've had a couple amazing samples about a year ago, but the one loaf I got (something apricot) and the samples I've tried more recently (including apple cinnamon) were not as magical. Because of the reviews, I kept coming back, optimistic that each last visit was was a fluke. But I've visited enough times that I sadly don't think we'll be back. read more

There are about a dozen different glorious types of bread in loaves as well as yummy cookies, jams and if you have lived your life well you will arrive on a Saturday when they have salad plate size donuts. We are currently working our way through the different varieties of breads (& donuts!) but the olive and cranberry walnut are particular favorites of ours. You can't go wrong with any of the donuts, they are huge and the flavors creative and delicious. The staff is friendly and helpful, if you can't decide just ask them what they think, we haven't been led wrong yet. The girl working the shop was super friendly and helpful. She gave me different samples to try and I finally settled on a loaf of Easter Bread. Being a seasonal bread, the Easter Bread had chocolate chips, pistachios, and cranberries. While I was there, I couldn't resist trying one of the infamous sea salted caramel chocolate chip cookies. The cookie was big and gooey - the hint of sea salt was a nice contrast to the sweetness of the caramel and chocolate chips. Saw the cookies in the Yelp photos and couldn't resist. The shop smells absolutely amazing and they had all kinds of yummy looking loaves of bread. I just got a chocolate Heath bar cookie and the popular salted caramel chocolate chip. The cookies are huge and only $2.50 each which is a steal. They have a lot more butter in it than I thought they would because they crumbled a lot when I was eating them. The Heath bar cookie has a less indulgent taste and tastes "lighter" while the salted cookie was a lot heavier and sweeter. Wish there weren't as many sea salt pieces on the cookie though. I love their bread! A $6 loaf goes a long way (with a student discount, it comes to $5.40 I believe)--most of their bread I tried tended to be very heavy and dense, full of rich flavor! Everything is delicious but my favorites so far are the sundried tomato, chocolate, and blueberry walnut. I'm not a huge fan of their cookies but bread puddings were awesome as well and the Saturday donuts I got for my roommate were a hit. The person working at the shop on Wed afternoons is super friendly and helpful! I found their purple donut with lemon-filling (I think? but the frosting on top was purple for sure and had "lem" on the box) to be doughy/chewy at the center (as of 2/15/2020). It's gigantic and so I think it just didn't cook through because of the size. My first time trying out their donut, I did appreciate the generous filling, size, and moderate pricing but wasn't too impressed with it mainly because it tasted homemade and not very "professional." I love custard in general, but if it was meant to be lemon curd, it definitely lacked that tanginess. read more

I constantly walk by this place whenever I am in Brookline, and I constantly wonder: What does this place sell? When I first heard the name of this place, I thought they would sell pork, ham, veal, and/or bacon. It turns out that their specialty is selling bread and cookies and not meat products made from pigs. I learned that the term "when pigs fly" is actually an "idiom". It means that something is so improbable that it will not happen, because in the current and real world, pigs, unfortunately, cannot fly, unless they somehow were given the ability or if we put the pigs on a flying machine and teach them. From what I heard, "when pigs fly" was supposedly told to the founder of this place as he began to make some good bread for people. I bought at least a couple of sliced loaves of sour dough bread here so I can make my own lunches. I used the bread with some ham, turkey, and fresh cheese that I bought from other markets, put some lettuce and mayonnaise, and I had a very simple and tasty sandwich. I really like the soft texture. It's also a great bread for some toast. I toasted the bread for about a minute, put some butter and strawberry jelly on it, and I had one of the best breakfast toasted bread on a Saturday morning. I also used this toasted bread with some scrambled eggs and cheese, and I thought I had a really good homemade breakfast. The cookies here are great. One cookie here, with some fresh cold milk should be enough for a heavy but really good snack. The texture of all cookies have the right amount of softness and usually had a great flavor. The Salted Caramel Triple Chocolate Chip is probably one of the most unique cookies. It had an interesting blend of saltiness, but the flavor and sweetness of the chocolate and the soft texture of the cookie made it one of the tastiest and memorable cookies I have eaten. Overall, if you are looking for a decently good loaf of bread to make your own sandwich, or a pretty good cookie, this place is a good choice if you are walking around in the streets of Brookline. If I really need a key ingredient for a good homemade sandwich, I would probably come to this place. Let me tell you what When Pigs Fly is not first: This is NOT a french bakery that serves airy, light bread that you can make good sandwiches with. (I find it too dense) What it is then you say? Crack Bread. Dense. Unique, Flavorful, Toastable, French-Toastable. Spreadable, Breakfasty, Sweet Bready (Like my new favorite Berry Lemonade!) and plain old addicting. Every morning I toast up my favorite Six Grain and Pumpkinseed to spread copious amount of Almond Butter on. My roommate named this crack bread because well, it's addicting. And, when we travel, we can't find bread that tastes or toasts like When Pigs Fly. So, here we are, crawling up to Coolidge Corner once a week to make sure we have our favorite breakfast food. Stop in the store where they have delightful employees who will give you a sample of any bread you want! Buy it as a gift for out-of-towners and make french toast when you visit! Local chain bread spot. Good: centrally located right on the C line, freshly baked breads (large variety) and (some) pastries, free samples, and often specific sales/deals. Average: counter service is really random - some great people and some who seem to not care at all, prices are not high but I wouldn't say well-priced either, bread availability is pretty spotty with many things running out. Bad: the hours stink, with the shop closing by 6:30 (or earlier a few times I've stopped by around 6:15 to see them shut down) every night. Better hope you're a 9-5er or only want bread on the weekend! It's basically JUST a bread store, so you really need to go out of your way for a single ingredient/component to a meal. read more

I have to disagree with a poster below. I don't think anything is baked on the premises. It absolutely does not have that smell of yeast or baking bread. The bread is fine , if a bit overpriced. My gripe is the lack of staff at different times. Sat morning, it's busy, line of maybe 6 people on the sidewalk. It's blazing hot. When you get into the store, there's one staff member only. Doing everything. When it's my turn, I commiserate with him about the shitty staffing. He takes it the wrong way and says he actually enjoys working by himself. This is addressed to the owners. My husband and I stop in here pretty much every time we take a walk to Coolidge Corner (which is often). We sample the breads, of course, and recently tried the Balsamic Vinegar - which was AMAZEBALLS. I immediately purchased a bottle (I didn't realize until this past weekend that it's bottled in CT and not made by When Pigs Fly - it's also sold elsewhere in this area. Oh well) and have been thoroughly enjoying it. We brought my parents in this weekend as an early Father's Day gift (we let my dad pick any 3 loaves) and they were like 2 little kids in a candy store. When I was in grad school, I could have sworn my friend was a dealer... A "When Pigs Fly" bread dealer that is! He would bring in 2 or 3 loaves a day and share it with everyone who'd want a piece. The bread is freaking delicious, so naturally I asked where he got it. This place was never in my walking path. Somehow I'd always miss it. Not this last time I was in town. Curious to see the inside of the place I stopped in. The lady behind the counter quickly slid on some gloves and asked me if I wanted to try some samples. Um,... Of course I did! This was my kryptonite of the day. I took one bite of the orange cranberry bread and said, "I'll take this one please!" I would have gotten more and should have, but I only stopped by right before I was scheduled to have lunch with a friend at Rod Dee down the street.
