I've been coming to Cheryl Ann's for YEARS, and I'm so glad they opened up shop again. Absolutely amazing goods baked with so much love. Stopped by for an errand and found this beautiful place. The people there were so helpful, patient, and passionate about the bread. When I went, the smell of fresh bread filled my nostrils and I was tempted to get their big loaf. I was able to set my eyes on their sweeter breads(bubkie? Forgot the name), but it was the cinnamon lightly sprinkled with sugar. Just wanted to give a shout out to this place because their service was amazing as well as their bread. read more

I remember going to this bakery when I was little and my father would get a few muffins and an onion board. I remember the ladies wrapping up the paper boxes with the blue and white string and their arm flaps going back-and-forth. Years later, I have gotten the onion board, of course, and challah . The last time I was there was before they close so this is going back maybe two years, everything delicious Service great, but I remember the Rugalah being overly expensive. This is a sweet little local bakery with a true family business vibe. The interior is fresh and organized. The service is always orderly and quick - and sometimes they give samples! The baked items are generally good. Challah is pretty reliable, though I've had some from here that was undercooked. The lemon cake was a delicious treat I brought to a kosher friend's birthday. The danishes are decent as well. I haven't had anything that absolutely blew me away - this isn't like a fancy French pastry shop, so adjust your expectations if you're expecting croissants and petit fours. What a great little place. Went with a friend this summer and I had never been to a Jewish bakery before. The smell of the place was mouth-watering and the challah is some of if not best I've had. Just bought their hamantaschen in a number of flavors. All were delicious. My guests raved about them. I buy their chalet from time-to-time, which is always great, a crowd pleaser around the holidays. They closed for almost I believe 2 years after a fire. Unfortunately, I understand they lost their long-time bakers, or some of them. Now the quality of some of their baked goods is erratic, for example my family's long-time Cheryl-Ann favorite frozen dough. Sometimes seems to have little taste, or a month or two ago was very sticky on the bottom. I don't buy dark rye from here anymore, as don't like their new recipe. Doesn't taste like fresh Jewish-style bakery dark rye. Service is always very friendly and patient. read more

Just went in today. Bought some cupcakes and cookies. The staff were very nice, the cookies were delicious but the cupcakes were TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE! Not sure who made these but it could not have been a trained baker! They were too dense, not cake-like at all. (Were they old?) And they were piled with this solid mound of thick, dense frosting. All wrong. Not good. Bought them to celebrate a coworker's birthday and felt completely embarrassed by them. $3.50 a piece? Nearly $30 for the cupcakes alone. Quite disappointing. read more

Used to think Cheryl Ann's made the best rugelach anywhere, but a recent visit left us disappointed. Rather than being flaky and crispy, they were undercooked, flat and a bit greasy. The challah too was disappointing- it was underbaked, dry, had no chew and just fell apart. I do hope that this is just growing pains after being closed for so long. We'll be back and , hopefully, the old quality will have returned. read more

Good news!!! They open now!!! I found out this week they were going to open back again this Friday March 15. I went Saturday and it was good to see it open with fresh goods again! Service was excellent! The place has been restored and looking good! Atmosphere was excellent! read more

I bought a rasberry danish today and it was Horribly salty!! I spent $4 for something that was just not edible and it went into the trash. I forgot the last time I bought a apple danish it went into the trash also, TOO SALTY! Danish should not be salty. So, disappointing! The owner should taste the end result. read more

I've been going to Cheryl Ann's for eons. I remember taking my daughter there when she was a toddler and now, 21 years later, she still goes with me. We both absolutely love their half moons, bubke and challah. I have never had a bad experience here. I will be a customer as long as they're open...which I hope is for a long, long time! read more

I wished I lived closer and could visit more often. Then again, I'd be much bigger if I did. We bought a challah for home and a couple of chocolate chip cookies for the ride back home. The cookies were still warm and oh so delicious. The challah was one of the best we have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. It was fresh, moist and extremely delicious. We finished it and kicked ourselves for only buying one. What were we thinking? There was a bit of a line, in a not so large store, but no worries, as I was still out in minutes. Staff was very friendly. It is cash only, not sure if there was a sign on the door or not, but I'm thankful I had cash with me for a change or I would have been very disappointed. Somehow I managed to forget to order some rugalah. I am already trying to figure out when I can head out to work a bit early and make a side trip for some more fantastically yummy baked goods. read more

The half moon cookies (known as black & whites elsewhere) are good, but getting a little pricey. Purchased poppy hamantaschen, raspberry, blueberry, apple raisin, and apricot rugelach, a small half moon, and a challah. I was worried about the challah not being fresh but she took one off the cooking rack for me and bagged it up. The rugelach, half moon, and challah were all shockingly fresh! Delightful! Ahh Cheryl Ann's. What an institution when it comes to challah. I worked at a synagogue for 2.5 years and we had deliveries every Friday from Cheryl Ann's. So, of course, I would call up a day or 2 before Rosh Hashannah and ask for them to throw 1 or 2 extra in the bag (I paid, of course) and voila! Delivered to my desk. My parents LOVED that I brought home these delectable challahs for the holidays. Once I stopped working there, I had to remember to actually call ahead and order the challah. Then I had to find time to get there and... oh man. That line. Out the door, down to the corner. Once you get in, you better know what you want or what you called in for cause they are QUICK! I did add some last-minute rugelach to my order last year, but be quick. People are patient, but to a point. It's worth it though! They do sell the challahs in some supermarkets, but it's just not the same as fresh from the source. read more

TLDR: Wow, this was bad! I tried the raspberry and cinnamon rugelach and a challah. Both typed of rugelach were aggressively salty and my family couldn't finish them. The Challah looked great and had the right texture, but it had a really off-putting rancid flavor, as if they used ingredients that went bad. I felt a bit sick to my stomach after eating it. They had the front door propped open with the temperature outside in the 30s and no apparent oven heat to compensate, so even the shopping experience was disappointing. read more

Perhaps the greatest black and whites of all time are hidden in this treasured Brookline shop. I haven't found any other place that makes them quite like Cheryl Ann's and trust me, I've been looking for a long, long time. Delicious moist cookie topped with a very generous amount of sweet cake frosting. Mon dieu, I would be in a perpetual state of depression should I ever become diabetic. Shoot me. Believe the hype about their Challah. It's heavenly and everything a moist, eggy challah is supposed to be. Their babka is pretty damn good too. And so are their cookies. And their breads. And so on. My only complaint is that their chocolate brownie has a funny aftertaste to it. I'm not sure why, but I'm not a big fan of it. Skip it and go right for their black and whites. Trust me. Ultimate yum! The staff are so nice and give helpful, well appreciated suggestions. I have not met a Cheryl Ann's item I haven't liked. It's a cheerful and inviting space. My favorite items would have to be the apricot rugelach, the poppy seed shortbread cookies, or the luscious marble cake. My only complaint would be that the space is a little cramped- hence the crates perpetually stacked against the wall, but it's really nitpicking at this point. There's no doubt: Cheryl Ann's staff and bakers know what they're doing. Great goods, nice employees, convenient location, it's great. I would recommend this place 101% of the time to any newcomer, and surely to you. PS: I've never tried any, but the house made cakes look scrumptious and are most definitely beautiful. 5 stars for the challah. I'd say I ain't no challah back girl,but it's a lie. As far as best challah in town, I still prefer Diamond Bakery and Wilson's Farms, but Cheryl Ann's is still really good. Very sweet, eggy, and dense if that's your thang. I personally prefer a lighter challah. read more

Very nice people behind the counter, and the foods are great. Their challah is definitely cake-like, and it isn't going to be to everyone's taste. I like it, and I think it's great in french toast, but again, tastes will vary when it comes to Cheryl Ann's challah. They have some great cookies, gingerbread men, etc., and personally, I've always enjoyed their cakes, cupcakes, etc., so, I disagree with Adina Z. They are indeed parev, making this a great bakery for anyone with lactose intolerant family members, friends, or guests. read more

Best challah in Boston. I bought a dozen ruggulah's (sp) this morning for a client meeting and there was not one left. Their russian bread, which is dark rye with raisins, is heavenly. My husband got my birthday cake here a few days ago. From viewing the menu myself, it is a Black Forest Cake. My husband came home telling me it was a raspberry cake since the employee told him "rapberry" was inside. He said her English was not strong and maybe she was Filipina?... Well, it ended up being filled with cherry pie filling and had shriveled up maraschino cherries on top. They really looked like prunes and had no juice at all. There was really no flavor in the cake at all; I couldn't even tell it was chocolate from the taste. The cake itself and whipped cream were dry/crusty. This cake was clearly not fresh -- maybe even older than a day. We were very disappointed and will never be returning. This is a dishonest bakery with a front desk employee who is not qualified to explain the pastries. We totally did not expect this, especially given the location. I think we would have been better off getting a cake from Wegman's. This is what we get for trying out a new place. I would not recommend this bakery to anybody. read more

I went into the Southend this weekend and shot over to brookline for some of Cheryl Ann's Challah. It truly is the best that I have ever had. chewy, buttery, cakey, etc etc do not do it justice. Go get a loaf (I prefer the braided) and try it for yourself, then decide. It is exactly how Challah should taste, to a goy anyway ;) I bought a cinnamon raisin Babka as well. studded with golden raisins it was good but not as good as the old Tula's(not sure if thats the name?) in Newton, that was the best babka ever imo. read more

I ate 7 of their iced cookies in 7 minutes and then fell down and shook for more than 20 minutes on the sidewalk outside. But the cookies were so good. The black and white cookies are excellent and based on the size of the people going into this place, I'm not alone in this assessment. I can't believe no one has reviewed this place! Challah is amazing. The best I have had, ever, hands down. Pretty much everything is delicious, however; I have certainly never been disappointed. I have brought some of their cookies into work and my coworkers were eternally grateful. When my sister-in-law's dad passed untimely we were comforted by a large box of assorted treasures which were appreciated by all - the elderly mourners and an eight-year-old survivor, included. I was unexpectedly delighted by their treats at a local baby shower as well. My point being, clearly their goodies are appealing to a very wide demographic, and I am not alone in being a devoted and faithful customer in this community. To top it off, service is always fast and friendly. I have been here at least 50 times, so, talk about consistency. Don't even wonder - check it out, ASAP! read more
