Tiny bakery in Brookline that sells fresh bread of different varieties and some desserts. I got the salted caramel chocolate chip cookie and it was so good. As soon as I took a bite out of it I was tempted to return and buy another cookie. Next time hope to try some of the other types of breads. I guess you can buy loaves of When Pigs Fly bread in grocery stores across New England, but nothing beats walking into one of their storefronts and purchasing a fresh loaf of one of their signature creations. My current obsession? The wild blueberry granola with 8 grains. It's a sweet and hearty creation which, topped with peanut butter and banana, makes for a delicious, filling and (somewhat) healthy breakfast. I'm also a big fan of their jellies, especially the raspberry jalapeno--it's sweet and spicy, just like me. ;) Pair it with a loaf of bread and some cheese, and you have yourself a match made in heaven. $5-6 may seem a bit steep for bread and jelly, but sometimes the offerings at Trader Joe's just won't cut it. And you know what? With Parks and Recreation ending and unable to remind you, it's even more important that you remember to TREAT YO SELF. I stopped by this awesome bread shop while venturing around Brookline, but this impulse visit made a regular out of me. The staff is so friendly and helpful, offering samples to customers right when they walk in! I've tried a number of breads, but my absolute favorite has got to be the red pepper hummus with sesame seeds and garlic! A loaf only goes for $5-6 and it lasts AGES! When Pigs Fly bakes amazing bread. They sell everything from basic whole wheat to chocolate bread to apricot date bread, as well as a few dessert items (blueberry bread pudding, for example). They literally carry 20 different breads every day. All of the bread is baked at the main When Pigs Fly bakery in Maine and delivered fresh each day. The Maine bakery is certified kosher (KVH), so although the Brookline store is not under kosher supervision, you can call a day ahead and ask them to bag your bread before it leaves the bakery in Maine and it will arrive in a sealed bag certified kosher. This is the greatest bread I've ever had. i got the garlic sourdough. It's great uncooked and plain, it's great for paninis (esp grilled cheese), it toasts well. I love the smell of this bakery when I walk in. It smells like home. Its warm and cozy and the owners are really nice. They provide a wide range of selection for the breads that they make which are fresh. They also provide they're own recipe of spreads that are an amazing companion to the breads. I normally don't like to buy bakery bread as I make my own, but I think I may have found my go to bakery. Its 30-35 minutes away from my home, I stumbled upon this gem when I got lost getting to Boston and now they're never going to get rid of me! My favorite thing which I suggest is the chocolate bread, the maple walnut bread and the potatoe and garlic bread. If you like to eat your breads adventurously, try them with the caramel butter! One of the best breads I have ever tasted. Subtle pecan. We ate it for dinner with beer. Impossibly good.The company is originally from York, Maine. E wants to gift everyone with this bread. Fluffy and light, crispy on the outside, all natural ingredients, made that day. He describes it as "like an Annie's pretzle"; it's so soft. The maple banana walnut bread is delicious. Its $6 for a loaf, but the loaf is very large. It's true that this loaf is a dollar or two more than one at stop and shop or a typical grocery store, but it is 10 times better - hands down. Bread gets no respect. To most people it's a sort of fluffy, tasteless starch meant to be burnt to a crisp before being drenched in butter and jam, a vehicle for getting cheese and olive oil to you mouth, or something that keeps your hands from getting too greasy when you eat fried steak and cheese. The fact that we even allow that "wonder" abomination to carry the title should be enough evidence for anyone that our society has failed to appreciate bread. Thank god When Pigs Fly is here to fix that. Their bread is amazing, perfectly chewy, crusty and flavorful. They offer tons of inventive flavors like orange cranberry walnut, and spinach garlic and goat cheese, not to mention new flavors every couple of months (like the to-die-for pumpkin curry, or the banana praline bacon, which I have never been able to serve to guest because I mainline it on the way home ). But even their more standard breads shine. From the sour dough to the baguettes, the bread isn't just a placeholder until you get to the filling, it has great flavor of its own. The sweets here are fabulous as well. Their cookies are enormous enough to share with a friend and still feel sick. I especially recommend the chocolate toffee cookie, which has a cake-like cookie base covered in melted, delicious toffee. The bread puddings are great as well, and are awesome reheated at home with a scoop of ice cream. The chocolate bread is really tasty, and a slice satisfies as well as a brownie, but you can tell yourself it's healthy! because it's bread! They'll let you try any bread they have in house, as well as the sweets, so it's definitely worth a visit. They'll convert you to the church of awesome bread and that Stop and Shop sandwich loaf will never satisfy you again. read more

One sunny Saturday morning, a slightly hungover girl stumbled into a bakery with a craving for carbs. This poor girl just needed something to fill her growling stomach. Fortunately, she stumbled into When Pigs Fly, and was transported to another land, where carby deliciousness is abundant. Samples, friendly service, and a great variety! What more could a girl want? This place is perfect for a vegan on a quest for tasty bread. The ingredients are listed under the bread name. Easy to see if "eggs" are added (which, luckily, most of them don't have any). Free samples help sway the vote when on the fence about which bread to pick up for toast, or dinner, or snacking. Personal faves: Three Seed with Honey, Mango Pineapple Sesame, and Chocolate. This place, like many local businesses, has started using the LevelUp program (if you have a smart phone, I can't recommend it highly enough) so extra discounts make me more inclined to drop in. The first time I had this was in Maine. I had always seen commercials on Phantom Gourmet and was curious to sample their bread. The Beacon St. location is easy to miss, as the sign isn't too obvious. Parking is metered out front and usually not too crowded. I love being able to sample everything. From the sweet to savory breads, everything is unique. The lemonade bread was pretty special, and of course the famous chocolate bread is a must try. I really liked the orange fennel, as well, and some of the other savory ones. The bread is very fresh, and they'll slice it for you, too. I wouldn't go there for ordinary 7 grain bread or plain loafs - definitely try one of their odd sounding combinations because they usually end up working really well. Beyond bread, I love their bread pudding. I think the dense, moist, chocolate "bread pudding" is the best - it's not pieces of bread per se, but it's more like a pudding cake. It's chocolatey, rich, not too sweet. You can also buy their bread mixes and some jams, but the prices here aren't bad, so I'd rather just buy the bread there. Go hungry so that you can sample everything before you make your purchase! read more

Yes, the bread's not your typical $1.99 Trader Joe's or Shaws brand bread, but I think it's worth every penny. They have seasonal breads, and some of my favorite have been the maple apricot date, the potato and garlic, the orange cranberry, and the plain ol' sour dough. I've yet to try their famous chocolate bread, but I'll get to it soon enough, because another great perk is that they let you sample any of the breads, pretzels, and cookies you wish! The only "downside" to sampling is that you just can't walk out of there without buying SOMETHING... Use LevelUp when paying, and not a credit card. A) WPF is a small business, and every pass on transaction fees that credit cards make vendors pay is always a plus; and B) Level Up tends to give you some perks (ex. I got the sour dough for $2.00 because I had LevelUp credit - and this was my first time using it in store, too!). Another good tip: if you go near closing hours, and you're lucky enough to get a long-time employee helping you, they usually let you leave with some free bread (usually leftovers from sample loaves). The two times I went there before closing time, I finagled an almost-complete loaf of spinach bread the first time, and one-third of a New York rye bread the second time - score! WFP is definitely worth it. Ditch the Shaws brand, take a break from the TJ's brands, and try this place out. read more

I will gladly trade and save a $6 craft beer for a $6 loaf of their banana, pecan, and maple loaf. Their liberal taste-test system works your favor as you are able to get a nice snack as well as find the perfect bread! The texture is thick, richly stocked with dried fruits or vegetables, and much healthier than anything else you'll find (ie. lack of preservatives). Rarely do I find the need to add anything onto to their bread except for the occasional peanut butter or butter. When Pig's Fly sells some pretty interesting loaves of bread, with flavors going from sweet to spicy all in one loaf, but it's a bit expensive at around 6, at least for what it is. The bread is a little dry, or stale, which means it doesn't lose much integrity in a single day, but it's no where near as fluffy or delicious as Clear Flour's are, which is just down a ways on harvard st. The turnover is definitely a crap ton better over there. I tried one of the spicy breads, and the pumpkin cranberry, and neither were exceptionally tasty. The chocolate bread looks pretty good though, and the bread pudding cake is pretty decent. When Clear Flour is this close though, I doubt I'll come here often. read more

When I saw this place under construction, I knew it was going to be a danger to my waistline. But there are few things better than the smell, taste, and overall delight of fresh bread - so I couldn't resist. The staff here is super friendly, and taste-testing is pretty much a requirement! And with their vast assortment of loaves, my palate was definitely entertained. I finally chose the Kalamata Olive & Red Pepper for a slightly steep but relatively reasonable $6. The bread proved to be a good complement to our other picnic goodies. My only complaints: 1. The bread had olive PITS in it - which thankfully, by some grace of God, I did not bite. Watch out for those chompers! 2. Aside from bread, their selection is pretty slim. Maybe they need to catch on in popularity first, but I know I am weak when it comes to freshly baked pastries and treats. Overall, I don't think this place compares to Clear Flour bakery. But it's a welcome addition to Coolidge Corner and I'm sure I'll be back. read more

I was in When Pigs Fly earlier today for the first time and immediately settled on the Banana Cinnamon Walnut Bread. OMG. I had to have my roommate take it away from me- it's SO good. This place is super cute and quiet. It could almost go unnoticed if you weren't looking out for it. They had a wide variety of breads but the banana walnut caught my attention first. For only $6 for a whole loaf of this wonderful desert heaven, I feel happier than ever to help out a great local place. Though this was my first time actually at the store, I have been eating their bread for years and always enjoyed it. This is my new favorite place. I live WAY too close and this is going to be veryy dangerous for me. I went in the other night and left after sampling about 10 different breads. And the staff were still trying to get me to try more. You know when you go some places, they offer you sample but they don't really want to give them? Here, they totally encourage it and LOVE having you sample whatever you want. Oh and also, the bread is really, really good. I've had 3 different loaves since it's opened and have loved them all. This place is dangerous. I am a carboholic and can't have just one slice of anything. Pair the fact that there aren't really any preservatives in the bread, so you have to eat it before it goes bad, and I can put away a half a loaf a night! So I try to avoid coming here too often. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Coolidge Corner in the holidays where people are usually found rushing towards Trader Joe's for their last minute grocery shopping lies a small down-to-earth bakery with a silly name, When Pigs Fly. I've been to Coolidge Corner before but was referred to this bakery from a friend who isn't even from Boston She only told me about it because she wanted me to buy her a loaf. Some friend huh? No, I'm just kidding. But, she did get her Orange, Cranberry, Walnut loaf, as she was picking me up from the airport for when I came home for the holidays. I also now have found an amazing bakery to yelp about my experience. Win win, of course. Anyway, the bread here is a-mazing and scrumptious. There was a lot of people here as it was the holidays and only one guy working the counter. I guess bread here is in high demand and good for holiday gifts. They also sell homemade jam that I think pairs well with their bread. I guess I would have to come back another time to try it. They were also selling out fast. * note* I came later in the afternoon and already found some loaves were sold out. One customer even came back twice in the same day and bought 4 loaves! WPF offers a wide selection of sweet and savory yeast breads that are packed full of apples, cheese, sun dried tomatoes, olives, peaches, nuts, etc. This store is the place to get this amazing bread. Whenever I go in here I get to sample pieces of bread. When Pigs Fly offers the opportunity to sample pieces of bread. I appreciate this since their bread are about $5+ each and I love bread. While $5 for a loaf of fantastic bread is not steep at all, I love that I don't have to risk a Lincoln on something I might not love. They can even slice the bread here for you. Get it sliced. It makes it easier to eat! Here are some suggestions for using their bread 1) Eat it plain 2) Toast and eat with butter or dunk in oil 3) French toast 4) Sandwich You really cant go wrong. read more

There are ALL sorts of innovative bread for sale at When Pigs Fly. Most of the standard bread is perfect and fresh (except the dinner rolls - don't get those - they are not good at all). Whole wheat is great. In terms of the specialty bread, go with apple cinnamon. You will never look back - ever. It's unreal. Free samples are standard. Throw in a cookie at the end for dessert. Only downside here is that you can only buy by the loaf - why can't they do half loaves? Got a great suggestion from the very nice staff to make french toast with their bread. Great idea! read more

The pigs aren't flying here. Sure, the people behind the counter are nice and the bread (and spreads!) are delicious, but the space just isn't doing it for me. I don't feel inspired to buy lots of bread, and it takes a LOT to not inspire me to purchase carbs. The sponge painted floor looks amateur, and the dark depths of the interior just look dusty. A curtain and a baking bread aroma would do a lot for the place. Granted, I did stop by on a Sunday.. but still. Pluses: The bread flavors are varied and deliciously chewy, and there is a variety of them. They're fresher than the WPF loaves I used to get at Market Basket. This is tough review to write, because I've always had a delicious loaf of bread from this place. However, last night the wife and I made a big pot of chili and decided to pick up a loaf for dipping. We opted for the sourdough, which was great. The problem, however, was that we got it sliced there. And while enjoying our slices back at home, we could taste a few other things going on that were on the bread. Our best guess is that the slicer wasn't properly cleaned between loafs, and as a result there was some reside from a prior loaf on the slicer. So, clean up your slicer folks! I had heard about this place from a friend about how good the bread pudding was. Off I went into the wild blue yonder! I ordered two types of bread pudding. One was awesome the other was good. The cookies are fantastic! I ordered the breads sweet ones of course I made french toast with the one with strawberry's and nuts. yummy!
