The matcha was good, the drink wasn't too sweet, and service was quick with a super long line. I personally wouldn't order this flavor again, I'd try the regular or strawberry instead. Heard great things about the place. It appears to have replaced the zero sugar tea place on Newbury. On a Friday afternoon, there was a line inside to order but it went by quickly. My wife and I ordered the strawberry matcha latte and the matcha latte with the cream top. The cream foam reminds me of the cheese foam that other shops have but this one tasted better. My wife enjoyed her strawberry matcha latte and claimed that the strawberry puree was the best she tasted. My matcha latte with a cream top was good. It was a bit sweet though. I wish the matcha to milk ratio was more on the matcha side. The matcha tasted like it was good quality but it was masked behind the milk. Came early on a Thursday morning and there was no line! The employees are all friendly and there's plenty of seating. There's a restroom here as well. I really wanted to love byChae because the branding, presentation, and interior are all beautiful. The shop has a clean minimalist aesthetic, and the drinks look incredible. Unfortunately, the drinks themselves did not live up to the hype for us. We ordered the Mango Sticky Rice Matcha and the Strawberry Matcha. The Strawberry Matcha was definitely the better of the two. The strawberry puree tasted fresh and high quality, and it paired well with the milk. My biggest complaint was that the matcha itself was almost nonexistent. My fiancée and I both felt the same way. Compared to many of the specialty matcha shops that have opened around Boston this summer, the matcha flavor here was much too subtle. The Mango Sticky Rice Matcha was especially disappointing. The mango completely overpowered the drink, and I never got the sticky rice flavor or texture that the name suggests. It tasted much more like a mango latte than a matcha inspired version of mango sticky rice. One thing that also concerned me was watching drinks being prepared without gloves while handling ingredients that appeared to go directly into finished drinks. I understand gloves are not required in every situation if utensils or other food safe practices are being used, but as a customer it did make me question the food handling practices. I might be wrong, maybe that's okay with Boston's department of public health. I expected better for a cafe in Newbury. Overall, I can understand why people visit for the aesthetic and social media appeal, but if you are looking for a strong matcha experience, there are quite a few other specialty matcha shops around Greater Boston that I personally think do it better. Three stars because the presentation and atmosphere were excellent, but the drinks themselves left us wanting more. I think the drinks are priced pretty well and I wouldn't hesitate to order another Strawberry Matcha in the future, maybe just ask them to skip the garnish. The lobby was clean and well-maintained, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the service was a bit lackluster. I'm not expecting anyone to go above and beyond, but a simple acknowledgment or greeting goes a long way. During my visit, the cashier was sitting on top of a refrigerator, using his phone and eating on the floor, which raised some food safety concerns. His clothing also appeared dirty and unkempt, and I did not observe him washing his hands afterward. As for the drinks, they were good! Definitely on the sweeter side, so I'd recommend asking for less sweetness if you don't have a huge sweet tooth. I also noticed the cream top canister sitting out on the counter for quite some time. While that alone wouldn't necessarily concern me, combined with the other food safety observations, I think additional training on proper food handling, hygiene, and ensuring products are held within food safety standards would be beneficial. By Chae is one of those viral social media cafes I discovered while scrolling through Instagram--and I'd also heard about it from my friends who are obsessed with matcha. I went on a weekday, probably before noon, and luckily there were only about three people waiting to order. The space itself is pretty small, with some seating. You can definitely taste that they use quality ceremonial-grade matcha, and the milk foam and homemade strawberry purée made it even better. Would I wait one or two hours just for this drink? I had a really positive experience at chae's matcha truck. I went there right before he was scheduled to close for the day, and he was starting to run out of ingredients. He did a great job compensating for the fact that he was missing ingredients and I was still able to get a pretty good tasting matcha. The matcha was good yes, but this business needs some adult supervision. This is not a place to go if you are looking to grab a quick drink between meetings. The employees seemed to care more about socializing with their friends/people in line rather than taking orders to move the line along. It would be great to add the menu where people can see it while they wait in line. The signage outside also needs to be better. There is a small gold sign outside on the sidewalk and a barely noticeable door sign. If you are looking for this place on Apple Maps, please note it sends you to the oncloud store/Lolita instead. Additionally it would be great to include the store hours, location and menu on your website. As for the store hours currently, they open at 11am. I heard they will be looking to open at 8am. I ordered the cream top matcha with oatmilk. They had new workers so I did have to repeat my order about three times, but no big deal! The drinks were prepared within a reasonable time so I did not have to wait too long. First of all, the color of this matcha is gorgeous. It has been a while since I have been able to obtain a reasonably priced matcha that does not taste disappointing. The oatmilk was not overpowering and paired really well with the matcha. The matcha was smooth but tasted lighter in flavor than I preferred. There is no bitterness or strong vegetable aftertaste which was nice. I enjoyed the cream foam.
